Abstract:According to the international trade theory of heterogeneous firms, exporting is the self-selection of more productive firms. This point depends on the assumption of the entry cost differential between the domestic market and the foreign market,i.e.the entry cost of the foreign market is higher than the domestic market. The entry cost differential is not exogenous;it depends on the firm’s characteristics, especially the ownership and trade pattern. As to firms with foreign capital or firms that can export under the processing trade pattern, because they have ex ante experience in the foreign market or can distribute goods through existing distribution channels in the foreign country, the entry cost they have to pay in the foreign market is lower than the domestic market.Under this condition, exporting will be the self-selection of less productive firms, which is contrast to the international trade theory of heterogeneous firms.
