Abstract:Studies of modern Chinese liberalism and liberal intellectuals in recent years have a common shortcoming:they confuse historical ideas with contemporary ideas. On the one hand,these studies forcefully bring into the liberal framework individuals or groups whose words and actions differed sharply from those of "liberals" and who did not regard themselves as such. On the other hand,they leave out individuals and groups who praised liberty and liberalism. Taking the media as an example,while we cannot assert that all newspapers and magazines with the word "liberty" in their titles must pursue liberalism,some newspapers and magazines that did not use the word "liberty" advocated liberalism nonetheless. Obviously they should be important examples for us to explore the historical locus of modern Chinese liberalism. Liberal ideas gradually spread in the late Qing period,and gradually more people began to style themselves as "liberal." Starting with the column "Discussing Liberty" in Shen Bao,at least nine newspapers and magazines appeared with the name "liberty" in their titles. These mainly fell into two types:first,Liberal Party organs in various cities; second,newspapers and magazines that printed playful articles in pursuit of the three great freedoms of thought,speech and publication. Both types of publication staunchly defended their freedom of speech against disapproval and pressure from the local powers,but politically they did not wave the flag of liberalism,and they were somewhat disreputable as well. It was only with the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War—when the number of publications with the word "liberty" in their titles again increased dramatically—that liberalism became the ideological banner and political goal of some newspapers and magazines.
