Abstract A series of red light emissive phosphors Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10) and Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , M 0.08 + (M = Li, Na, K) were prepared through solid-state reactions, and their luminescent properties were studied. The influences of contents of Eu 3+ and charge compensators on the luminescent properties were discussed. Both the fluorescent intensities and quantum yields are greatly improved through adding charge compensators. The phosphors can be effectively excited by the light of 394 and 465 nm, and show bright red emissions. The decay curves are well fitted with single exponential decay models. Furthermore, the temperature-dependent luminescence indicates the phosphors exhibit small thermal-quenching properties. So the phosphors are able to be applied to white light-emitting diodes. Keywords SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ Phosphor LED Charge compensation Thermal stability 1 Introduction White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) provide great superiorities such as low electric consumption, environment-friendly, high brightness, long lifetime, good reliability, fast response [1,2] , and extensively applied in solid-state lightings [3] . A white-light LED with a blue InGaN chip in combination with a yellow phosphor (YAG:Ce 3+ ) has been commercially available [4] . However, such a combination exhibits a poor color rendering index (<80) due to the lack of a red light component (above 600 nm) [5] . So, some red phosphors are needed to introduce in this combination [6] . One approach to producing white light is the combination of blue LED with green- and red-emitting phosphor materials [7] , the other combination is blue LED with green-, yellow- and red-emitting phosphor materials [8] . Another method to assemble white LEDs is to use red, green and blue light-emitting phosphors coated on a near ultraviolet LED chip to generate white light that will yield high quality LED [9,10] . All these applications require red-emitting phosphors; however, commercially red phosphor for white LEDs used Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ shows lower efficiency under near-UV or blue light excitations and instability [11] . Therefore, it is important to research red phosphors can applied to white LEDs. Eu 3+ has been extensively studied as an activator ion because of its particular spectral characters and has been used in most commercial red phosphors [12] . Eu 3+ ions activated tungstates have received considerable attention due to the special properties of WO 4 2 - group [13–21] . These phosphors show excellent thermal and hydrolytic stability, and have strong absorption in the near ultraviolet region. Therefore, tungstates are good choice as host materials for white LEDs. For all that, little attention has been paid to the luminescent properties of Eu 3+ -doped SrWO 4 . So we prepared SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ and studied the luminescent properties. Very recently, we reported a novel phosphor SrWO 4 :Sm 3+ [22] . The phosphor SrWO 4 :Sm 3+ was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction in air atmosphere, with same prepared method of SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ . In the emission spectrum of SrWO 4 :Sm 3+ , three peaks locate at 562 nm, 596 nm and 642 nm, corresponding to CIE chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.54 and y = 0.46, which indicates the orange light emitting; for SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ , the emission spectrum is consist of strong peaks around 612 and 615 nm and weak peaks around 590, 654 and 700 nm, it has CIE chromaticity coordinates of ( x = 0.65, y = 0.35), and shows red light emission. The phosphor SrWO 4 :Sm 3+ can be efficiently excited by ultraviolet; while the excitation bands of SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ are matched well with the characteristic emission from near-UV and blue LED. The temperature-dependent luminescence indicate both the phosphors SrWO 4 :Sm 3+ and SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ exhibit small thermal-quenching properties. In this paper, the luminescent properties Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10) and Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , M 0.08 + (M = Li, Na, K) were investigated. The chromaticity coordinates were compared with that of commercial red phosphor Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ , and the results show that the chromaticity coordinates of our phosphors closer to the standard of NTSC ( x = 0.67, y = 0.33) than the commercial red phosphor Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ . Since the ability to withstand high temperature is a basic requirement for phosphor applied in LEDs, the thermally stable properties of the phosphor were investigated, and it turned out to be excellent. So the phosphor is a potential red component for white light-emitting diodes. 2 Experimental A series of Eu 3+ doped and Eu 3+ , M + co-doped SrWO 4 phosphors were prepared by solid-state reaction method from SrCO 3 (A.R.), WO 3 (A.R.) and Eu 2 O 3 (99.99%) as the starting materials [22] using Li 2 CO 3 (A.R.), Na 2 CO 3 (A.R.) and K 2 CO 3 (A.R.) as the other materials. The molar concentration of the activator Eu 3+ ions varied from 2% to 10%. The synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) using a RigakuD/MAX-2400 X-ray diffractometer. The chromaticity coordinates calculated by the CIE system. Temperature-dependent luminescence of phosphor was measured on a Hitachi F-4500 fluorescence spectrophotometer. More details see reference [22] . Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) data were collected on a Nicolet 5700 infrared spectrotometer in the range of 400–1500 cm −1 using KBr pellets. The photoluminescent (PL) spectra, fluorescent quantum yield and fluorescent lifetime measurements were carried out on an Edinburgh FLS 920 combined fluorescence lifetime and steady state spectrometer. The FLS 920 spectrometer is equipped with a 450 W xenon lamp for photoluminescent (PL) spectra and an optical parametric oscillator for lifetime measurements. The excitation spectra were obtained scanning from 240 to 480 nm monitored at 615 nm. The emission spectra were scanned from 580 to 710 nm while excited at 394 and 465 nm, respectively. The fluorescent quantum yields were measured using an integrating sphere. Excitaition light source: 450 W xenon lamp; surface coating of the intergating sphere: barium sulfate; data acquiring technology: single photo counting mode; excitation wavelength: 394 and 465 nm, respectively. All measurements were carried out at room temperature except for the temperature-dependent luminescence. 3 Results and discussion Fig. 1 shows the X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of the standard pattern JCPDS No. 08-0490 and sample Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10). All the strong peaks of the samples can be assigned to the tetragonal phase SrWO 4 ( a = 5.416 Å and c = 11.95 Å) reported in the literature (JCPDS 08-0490). It can be considered that the as-obtained samples have good crystallinities and no other impurities were observed in the products. The crystal structure of strontium tungstate (SrWO 4 ) is shown in Fig. 2 . The strontium tungstate (SrWO 4 ) belongs to sheelite structure [23] , and W 6+ occupies the tetrahedral sites constructed by O 2− in this structure; composing WO 4 2 - anion complex. Sr 2+ is eight-coordinated by O 2− , thus formed a distorted cube. The radius of Sr 2+ is 1.16 Å (when coordination number CN = 8) and Eu 3+ is 1.07 Å (when coordination number CN = 8), it is presumed that Sr 2+ can be occupied by the Eu 3+ ions. The FT-IR spectra of the samples provide an accessorial explanation to the products’ structures. The FT-IR spectra of Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + with different contents of Eu 3+ are shown in Fig. 3 . Vibration wave numbers (cm −1 ) and assignments for Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10) are listed in Table 1 . It can be seen from Fig. 3 that a strong absorption band at 815 cm −1 which related to O–W–O stretches of the WO 4 tetrahedron. Because the AWO 4 -type sheelite oxides having S 4 site symmetry for WO 4 2 - groups, which show the main absorption bands in the region 400–1000 cm −1 centered around 911, 833 and 405 cm −1 corresponding to the ν 1 , ν 3 and ν 2 modes of WO 4 2 - groups, respectively [18] . For the same reason, around 411 cm −1 band is attributed to the ν 2 stretching vibration of W–O. The absorption peaks appearing in the range of 400–1000 cm −1 are the typical FT-IR absorption peaks of WO 4 2 - with scheelite tetragonal structure. The FT-IR peaks of all products are approximately identical; that is to say, although the contents of Eu 3+ are different, the structure of the crystals belongs to the same type. The results are in agreement with the analysis of XRD. The typical excitation and emission spectra of SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ are shown in Fig. 4 , respectively. From the excitation spectrum it can be seen that a broad band in the range of 240–330 nm, which is assigned to the combination of the charge-transfer transition of O 2− → W 6+ and O 2− → Eu 3+ . The strong excitation band around 394, 465 nm corresponding to 7 F 0 → 5 L 6 , 7 F 0 → 5 D 2 transitions of Eu 3+ ions, respectively. These excitation bands are attributed to Eu 3+ 4f levels and listed in Table 2 . The bands located at 394 and 465 nm are well matched with the characteristic emission from near-UV and blue LED. The emission spectum shows sharp lines which corresponding to typical 4f characteristics emission of Eu 3+ . The highest emission peaks around 612 and 615 nm are assigned to the Eu 3+ electric dipole transition of 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 . The weak emission peaks around 590, 654 and 700 nm come of the transitions of Eu 3+ ion from 5 D 0 to 7 F 1 , 7 F 3 and 7 F 4 levels, respectively. The result is benefit to obtain phosphor with good color purity. When Eu 3+ ion is local in a low symmetry site, it displays 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 electric dipole transition, which appears dominantly and highly sensitive to its local environment. In SrWO 4 :Eu, because there is lack of inversion symmetry and break of parity selection rules, it makes the 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 electric dipole transition strongest among all these transition [24] . From the recorded emission spectra of phosphors SrWO 4 :Eu, the emission spectra of Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10) excited by 465 nm show identical features with that excited by 394 nm, the fluorescent intensity depends on the concentrations of Eu 3+ . The emission intensity of Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( λ ex = 394 nm or 465 nm) with different concentrations of Eu 3+ is shown in Fig. 5 . The fluorescent intensity increase with the increasing concentration of Eu 3+ ion up to x = 0.08, then decreased above the concentration due to concentration quenching. This quenching process is usually attributed to energy migration among Eu 3+ ions, which bring the excitation energy to killer sites such as surface defects in powders [25] . In general, luminous color is represented by color coordinates and color ratios. The values of chromaticity coordinates of the phosphor Sr 0.92 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + have been calculated from the spectra using the CIE (Commission International de l’Eclairage, France) system. It has been found that the sample have chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.65 and y = 0.35 ( λ ex = 394 nm or 465 nm), which shows red light emission. The emission intensity of Eu 3+ activated SrWO 4 ( λ ex = 394 nm or 465 nm) doped with different charge compensators is shown in Fig. 6 . It is obvious that the emission intensities are significantly increased by the efficient charge compensation. Among them, the phosphor Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + has the best charge compensation effect. In the next place is phosphor Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , K 0.08 + , Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Na 0.08 + phosphor shows the lowest fluorescent intensity. The change of fluorescent intensity is due to differences of the ionic radii of alkali metal ions. In general, the doped Eu 3+ and alkaline ions are randomly distributed in the sites cation of the host. The cations with different radii in the host compound can result in some distortions of the sub-lattice structure around the luminescent center ions and produce different photoluminescent properties [26] . The ionic radius of Sr 2+ is 1.16 Å, while the ionic radius of Li + , Na + , K + for charge compensation are 0.70 Å, 0.98 Å and 1.37 Å, respectively. When alkali metal ions are co-doped into SrWO 4 , the distortion grade is different, which impact on the luminous properties and crystal structure. In addition, the ionic radius of Li + is the smallest, it easiest doped into the crystal, and exhibit the best charge compensate effect. The fluorescent intensity is enhanced greatly by adding charge compensators. It is necessary to keep charge balance when a trivalent metallic ion is incorporated into a host lattice and substitutes for a divalent metallic ion. In phosphor Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + , one Eu 3+ is expected to replace one Sr 2+ ion. If so, to keep charge balance in the phosphor would be a difficulty, therefore, the host has to capture O 2 in the air to solve the problem. Another way to keep charge balance is provided by a strontium vacancy ( V Sr ″ ), 3Sr Sr → 2 Eu Sr + V Sr ″ , thus, only parts of Eu 3+ go into the lattice and occupy Sr sites, in the phosphor may exist impurity phases Eu 2 O 3 or SrO which could restrain the growth of SrWO 4 grains during the sintering process, and results in the decrease of fluorescent intensity. When M + (M = Li, Na, K) codoped in the phosphor, M + play a role of charge compensation. Two Sr 2+ ions are replaced by one Eu 3+ and one M + , as express: 2 Sr Sr × → Eu Sr + M Sr ′ , Eu 3+ ions are able to be fully introduced into Sr sites, lead to Eu 2 O 3 and SrO are reacted with WO 3 to a large extent and enhanced the fluorescent intensities. The sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + has chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.66 and y = 0.34 ( λ ex = 394 nm or 465 nm), which closer to the standard of NTSC ( x = 0.67, y = 0.33) than the commercial red phosphor Y 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ (0.622, 0.351) [27] . The results indicating that the phosphor can be used for white LEDs. At room temperature, for phosphor Sr 0.92 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + and Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , M 0.08 + (M = Li, Na, K), the fluorescent decay curves corresponding to the emissional line at 615 nm of the Eu 3+ ion with identical features. As an instance, the fluorescent decay curves of Sr 0.92 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + for 615 nm emissions and fitting curves are shown in Fig. 7 . The decay behavior can be expressed as follows: I = I 0 + A 1 exp - t τ 1 where I and I 0 are phosphorescence intensity, A 1 is constant and t is time, τ 1 is decay time for exponential component. They are well fitted with single-exponential function, under excited 410 nm, the fluorescent lifetime of the sample Sr 0.92 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + is measured to be τ 1 = 0.66 ms; under excited 465 nm, that is 0.62 ms. For Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , M 0.08 + (M = Li, Na, K), under excited 465 nm, the fluorescent lifetimes as follow: sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + , τ 1 = 0.80 ms; sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , K 0.08 + , τ 1 = 0.72 ms; Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Na 0.08 + , τ 1 = 0.68 ms. The results shows that the lifetimes are short enough for potential applications in white LEDs. The fluorescent quantum yield of Sr 0.92 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + is 33% when the phosphor under excitation of 394 nm, and that is 58% when it under excitation of 465 nm. Under excited 394 nm, the fluorescent quantum yields as follow: sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + , it is 61%; for sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , K 0.08 + , that is 70%; Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Na 0.08 + , it is 79%. Under excited 465 nm, they are: sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + , 96%; sample Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , K 0.08 + , 81%; Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Na 0.08 + , 98%. The thermal quenching property is an important technological parameter for phosphors applied in white LEDs [28] . The thermal-quenching properties of the phosphor Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + ( λ ex = 394 nm or 465 nm) were investigated in the temperature range from 20 to 180 °C. The obtained results were presented in Fig. 8 . By exciting of 394 nm light, the fluorescent intensity first decrease to 94% of its initial value at 20 °C and then decrease slightly during the temperature-increasing course to 100 °C, with increasing temperature up to 180 °C, it gradually decreased to 57% of that measured at the temperature of 20 °C. Under excited 465 nm, the fluorescent intensity first decrease to 93% of that measured at the temperature of 20 °C, and then decrease slightly in the range of 40–120 °C, it decrease to 64% of its initial value at 20 °C when the temperature was elevated to 180 °C. The results indicating that the phosphors SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ and SrWO 4 :Eu 3+ , M + (M = Li, Na, K) have small thermal-quenching properties and good suitability for applied in white LEDs. 4 Conclusions In summary, a series of red-emitting phosphors Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10) and Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , M 0.08 + (M = Li, Na, K) were prepared by solid state method. For phosphors Sr 1− x WO 4 : Eu x 3 + ( x = 0.02–0.10), the fluorescent intensity of the phosphors excited by 394 and 465 nm reach a maximum at x = 0.08. The bright red emission locate at about 615 nm originating from the electric dipole transition 5 D 0 → 7 F 2 excited by the light of 394 and 465 nm. Enhanced emission intensities are observed in the phosphors co-doped with efficient charge compensators. Sr 0.84 WO 4 : Eu 0.08 3 + , Li 0.08 + has the best charge compensation effect. The results of fitting the experimental data of fluorescent decay curves revealed that Eu 3+ -doped SrWO 4 phosphor in terms of a single exponential decay model. The fluorescent lifetimes of the phosphor are short enough for applications in white LEDs. In addition, the phosphors show small thermal quenching. Given good overall luminescent performances, this phosphor is a potential candidate as red-emitting component for white LED. Processing and Application of Ceramics
Abstract:Novel tungstate SrLa6-xW10O40: xEu3+ (x = 0, 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, 0.15, 0.18, 0.21) red phosphors were prepared by solid state method at 1150 ?C by using SrCO3, La2O3, WO3 and Eu2O3 as raw materials. The powders were agglomerated with particles having mostly spheroidal morphology, mean particle size D50 = 12.8 ?m and narrow particle size distribution. With the increase of doping amount x, there is no significant difference in the diffraction peak position of the phosphor, but the cell volume of SrLa6W10O40 slowly decreases. The relative strength of diffraction peaks decreases gradually and the half-peak width widens gradually, indicating that the inclusion of Eu3+ ions affects the crystallization of the SrLa6W10O40 matrix. Excitation and emission spectra of the prepared samples were obtained. The optimal doping content has the SrLa5.85W10O4: 0.15Eu3+ phosphor and is characterised with the colour coordinate of (0.652, 0.348), which is closer to the red standard colour (0.67, 0.33) than the near-ultraviolet red phosphor Y2O2S: Eu3+ (0.622, 0.351) used for commercial LED.

Abstract:Eu3+-doped strontium molybdate red phosphors (Sr1−xMoO4:Eux (x=0.01–0.2)) for white light-emitting diodes (LED) were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The fluorescent intensities of the as-prepared phosphors were remarkably improved. The excitation and emission spectra demonstrate that these phosphors can be effectively excited by the near-UV light (395nm) and blue light (466nm). Their emitted red light peaks are located at 613nm, and the highest quantum yield value (η) of the as-grown red phosphor, which is 95.85%, is much higher than that of commercial red phosphor (77.53%). These red phosphors plus commercial yellow powers (1:10) were successfully packaged with the GaN-based blue chips on a piranha frame by epoxy resins. The encapsulated white LED lamps show high performance of the CIE chromaticity coordinates and color temperatures. Moreover, to explain the fluorescent spectra of these phosphors, a complete 3003×3003 energy matrix was successfully built by an effective operator Hamiltonian including free ion and crystal field interactions. For the first time, the fluorescent spectra for Eu3+ ion at the tetragonal (S4) Sr2+ site of SrMoO4 crystal were calculated from a complete diagonalization (of energy matrix) method. The fitting values are close to the experimental results.

Abstract:The high-temperature solid-phase approach was used to synthesize Eu3+-doped SrMo0.5W0.5O4 phosphors, whose morphological structure and luminescence properties were then characterized by XRD, SEM, FT-IR, excitation spectra, emission spectra, and fluorescence decay curves. The results reveal that the best phosphor synthesis temperature was 900 °C and that the doping of Eu3+ and charge compensators (K+, Li+, Na+, NH4+) had no effect on the crystal phase change. SrMo0.5W0.5O4:Eu3+ has major excitation peaks at 273 nm, 397 nm, and 464 nm, and a main emission peak at 615 nm, making it a potential red fluorescent material to be used as a down converter in UV LEDs (273 nm and 397 nm) and blue light LEDs (464 nm) to achieve Red emission. The emission spectra of Sr1−yMo0.5W0.5O4:yEu3+(y = 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, 0.07) excited at 273 were depicted, with the Eu3+ concentration increasing the luminescence intensity first increases and then decreases, the emission peak intensity of SrMo0.5W0.5O4:Eu3+ achieves its maximum when the doping concentration of Eu3+ is 1%, and the critical transfer distance is calculated as 25.57 Å. When various charge compensators such as K+, Li+, Na+, and NH4+ are added to SrMo0.5W0.5O4:Eu3+, the NH4+ shows the best effect with the optimal doping concentration of 3wt%. The SrMo0.5W0.5O4:Eu3+,NH4+ color coordinate is (0.656,0.343), which is close to that of the ideal red light (0.670,0.333).

Abstract:A series of Sr3In2WO9: xEu(3+) red phosphors were prepared using a solid-state reaction. The strongest excitation peak of Sr3In2WO9: xEu(3+) appeared at 394 nm, and the strongest emission peak appeared at 612 nm. The concentration-dependent emission spectra show that the optimal doping concentration of Eu3+ ions is x = 0.30 for all Sr3In2WO9: xEu(3+) samples and Eu3+ occupies the non-inverted centrosymmetric site. Analysis of the causes of concentration quenching, the dipole-quadrupole interaction in Sr3In2WO9: xEu(3+) was determined to be the main cause. The thermal stability of the Sr3In2WO9: 0.30Eu(3+) sample was analyzed, and it was found that the luminescence intensity of the Sr3In2WO9: 0.30Eu(3+) was retained by 55.1 % at 423 K. The thermal quenching activation energy Delta E = 0.291 eV was calculated after the thermal quenching analysis. The calculated CIE chromaticity coordinate of Sr3In2WO9: 0.30Eu(3+) is (0.6450, 0.3544), which are very close to the standard red light (0.667, 0.333) given by the National Television Standards Committee system. The color purity of all samples is above 95 %, and the associated color temperature is below 2400 K. The chromaticity coordinates of the encapsulated WLED point of (0.329, 0.388) with a lower correlation color temperature of 5841 K and excellent color rendering index of 88, which indicated the near-UV excited SIWO: Eu3+ red phosphor has great potential for application in the field of WLEDs devices.

Abstract:A novel red SrMoO4:Sm3+,R+ (R+ = Li+, Na+, K+) phosphor was prepared by solid state reaction method. XRD results showed that 950 degrees C was a suitable sintered temperature for preparation of SrMoO4:Sm3+ phosphors. The emission spectra of the SrMoO4:Sm3+ phosphors consisted of some sharp emission peaks of Sm3+ ions centred at 562 nm, 601 nm, 646 nm, 703 nm, generating bright orange-red light. Luminescence concentration quenching could be observed when the doping concentration of Sm3+ ions was more than 2 mol%. The introduction of charge compensator R+ (R+ = Li+, Na+, K+) into the host efficiently enhanced the luminescence intensity of the SrMoO4:Sm3+ phosphors. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of the Sr0.96MoO4:0.02Sm(3+),0.02Na(+) phosphors was quite close to that of commercial red Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphors. These SrMoO4:Sm3+,R+ (R+ = Li+, Na+, K+) phosphors may be potentially used as red phosphors for white light-emitting diodes. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Sm3+/Eu3+ co-doped Sr9Y2W4O24 phosphors were prepared using the solid-state reaction process. The structure and micro-morphological analysis of the as-prepared phosphors were explored via x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Optical & spectroscopic characteristics were investigated by the mean of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) techniques. The Sr9Y2W4O24 phosphor is tetragonal in structure and belongs to the I41/a space group. The excitation spectra recorded demonstrates that near-ultraviolet and blue LED chips can effectively excite the titled Sm3+-Eu3+ co-doped phosphors. The emission intensity pertaining to Eu3+ ions increases at the expense of decrease in intensity of Sm3+ ions with increase in the concentration of Eu3+ ion in titled Sm-Eu co-doped Sr9Y2W4O24 phosphors. The Reisfeld's approximation applied to the emission spectra of the titled Sm3+-Eu3+ co-doped Sr9Y2W4O24 phosphor reveal quadrupole-quadrupole as the mechanism responsible for energy transfer (ET) from Sm3+ to Eu3+ ions. The PL decay lifetimes values recorded for 603 nm emission of Sm3+ ions under 407 nm excitation wavelength were found to be decreasing with increase in Eu3+ ions concentration. This clearly reveal the ET from Sm3+ to Eu3+ ions in the titled phosphors. With increase in Eu3+ ion concentration the calculated CIE parameters are gradually shifting towards the deep red region of the visible spectrum under UV excitation. The temperature dependent PL (TD-PL) spectra demonstrate that the Sr9Y2W4O24: Sm3+/Eu3+ phosphor has relatively better thermally stablity with its thermal activation energy at around 0.256 eV. The results obtained in the present investigation allows us to explore the utility of Sm3+/Eu3+ co-doped Sr9Y2W4O24 phosphors as an effective deep red emitter needed to fabricate white LEDs.

Abstract:The development of suitable red phosphors to obtain improved white color stands a good chance to serve in the new generation of white light-emitting diodes. Owing to multi-elements via doping and oxidation of reduced valence state of lanthanide or transition metal ions, most of the reported phosphors usually suffer from complex synthetic processes and unstable color of the lighting industry cycle. In this work, we present a new red emitting and stable Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor with regard to its special structure. It crystallizes as an orthorhombic cell, with Sr and Eu atoms co-occupying three different lattice sites in the space group of Pnma (no. 62). It is proposed that the long bond distance between activators minimizes the content quenching, while the high disorder of location restricts the thermal quenching. This phosphor emits bright red light with good color purity under UV excitation, with the luminescence intensity and quantum yield tunable via the fabrication temperature. Through a preliminary optimization of the synthesis process, the Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor prepared at 1250 °C has high quantum yields of about 94.7% and excellent thermal stability of 85.6% intensity retention at 150 °C relative to the initial value at room temperature. The calculated Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters (Ω2, Ω4) further clarified that the Eu3+ site in Sr3Eu2B4O12 had lower symmetry without an inversion center, and more distorted local environment and structural rigidity of the host, predicting excellent thermal stability. Finally, a warm pc-WLED device has been produced by mixing as-prepared Sr3Eu2B4O12 powders and commercial BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ and (Sr, Ba)2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphors, which exhibits a high color rendering index (Ra = 83.4) along with a color temperature at around 4102 K. The present work indicates that the Sr3Eu2B4O12 phosphor is an efficient red component with excellent thermal stability for white-light production of near-UV-excited w-LEDs.

Abstract:In this work, trivalent europium (Eu 3+ ) ion activated K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 red phosphors have been synthesized through high-temperature solid-state reaction method at 750 °C. Detailed analysis was conducted on the phase purity, morphology, and luminescence properties of the synthesized phosphors. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the successful formation of K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :Eu 3+ phosphors with pure phase with space group С 2/c . The photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was used to record the excitation and emission spectrum of Eu 3+ activated K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 phosphor. Under the excitation of 280 nm, the resultant samples exhibited the characteristic emissions of Eu 3+ ions corresponding to the 5 D 0 → 7 F J transitions. The optimal doping concentration of Eu 3+ ions was determined to be 35 mol%. Concentration quenching mechanism was identified as the interaction of near-neighbor ions. The chromaticity coordinates of K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :35 mol%Eu 3+ were (0.659, 0.340) with a corresponding high color purity of 99.8%. The prepared K 2 Sr(MoO 4 ) 2 :35 mol%Eu 3+ phosphor had good thermal stability with temperature quenching temperature ( T 0.5 > 420 K) and high activation energy ( E a = 0.267 eV). The exhaustive findings from this study form the basis for advocating the application of these phosphors in light-emitting devices.

Abstract:Intense red-emitting phosphors Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 were synthesized via high-temperature solid-state reactions. The crystal structure, luminescent properties, and quantum efficiencies of the as-prepared phosphors, as well as their luminescent thermal quenching capabilities and CIE coordinates were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors could be efficiently excited by the near-ultraviolet light (394 nm) to realize a novel red luminescence corresponding to the electric dipole transition D-5(0)-F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions. Based on the theoretical calculation, the dipole-dipole interaction was dominantly involved in the mechanism of concentration quenching of Eu3+ in the phosphors, and the activation energy for thermal quenching (Delta E) was determined to be 0.214 eV. The effects of charge compensation on the luminescence behaviors of Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8, where M+ represented a monovalent cation like Li+, Na+, or K+ acting as a charge compensator, were also investigated. The composition-optimized Sr2.80Eu0.10Na0.10B2SiO8 exhibited the preferable CIE coordinates of (0.644, 0.350), whose integrated intensity was calculated to be 1.7 times of that of the commercial red phosphor Y1.90Eu0.10O2S. These results suggest that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors are competitive as the promising red-emitting phosphor-converted materials for white light-emitting diodes. Abstract:A series of Eu 3 -doped strontium pyrophosphate (Sr 2 P 2 O 7 ) samples was developed by a combustion synthesis process to investigate their photoluminescence (PL) properties. X-ray diffraction analysis was conducted to identify the creation of an alpha phase with an orthorhombic crystal structure. Bond formation of a pyrophosphate group in the structure of phosphor was recognized through FTIR spectra. The surface morphology of the particles was studied through SEM. The energy band gap of the undoped phosphor was calculated to be 5.04 eV through analysis of diffusion reflectance spectra (DRS), and it gradually changed with doping concentration. The phosphors were excited under NUV–blue light i.e. , 396 nm and 466 nm, and displayed prominent red emission at a wavelength of 618 nm. The PL spectra of Eu 3+ doped Sr 2 P 2 O 7 were examined for the dependency of PL intensity on doping ion concentration and excitation energy. The optimum PL intensity was obtained at 0.3% concentration of Eu 3+ , and intensity quenching was observed with a further increase in concentration. This occurred due to multipolar interaction, which was confirmed through the critical distance R c value of 12.6 Å. Temperature-dependent PL was recorded under 396 nm excitation for an optimized phosphor (0.3% Eu 3+ ). Reduction in PL intensity was observed at higher temperature, but 82% intensity persisted at 540 K with respect to the intensity attained at room temperature i.e. , 300 K. The phosphor has high thermal stability, which is confirmed by the activation energy value of 0.206 eV. The PL emission decay lifetime was determined to be of the order of milliseconds for different concentrations of Eu 3+ . CIE chromaticity coordinates values were assessed from the PL spectra recorded at 396 nm excitation and the color purity was also determined for all the doped phosphors. The quantum efficiency of the 5 D 0 level transition was calculated to be 95.5% to 85.5% for all doped samples. The experimental results were further compared with determined Judd–Ofelt parameters. CIE and CCT values for 0.3% Eu 3+ -doped phosphor were evaluated to be (0.638, 0.364) with color purity of 91.5%. The results obtained for the as-prepared Eu 3+ -doped Sr 2 P 2 O 7 phosphor are quite significant for application of the phosphor as a red-emitting phosphor in pc-WLEDs.

Abstract:The white light-emitting diode has recently attracted great attention as a promising candidate for next generation lighting. The solid solution of Sr1.80Eu0.10Li0.10MgMoxW1−xO6 was synthesized via high-temperature solid-state reaction and this solid solution is treated as a promising red emitting phosphor for white light-emitting diodes. In our cases, the X-ray diffraction, excitation spectra, emission spectra and decay curves of these solid solutions were measured as a function of the Mo/W ratio to characterize the structural and luminescent properties. The excitation bands of the series of phosphors are consistent well with the region of near ultraviolet light, and the phosphors present better color purity than the commercial phosphor Y2O2S:Eu3+ in current use. Taking these properties into consideration, this kind of material may find a great potential application as a red phosphor for near-ultraviolet excited white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Charge compensated Sr3WO6:K+, Eu3+ was reported as an efficient red phosphor for white light emitting diodes (LEDs). It exhibited a strong red emission centered at 618 nm. The main excitations are from f-f transitions of Eu3+ ions (360-550 nm), which matched the near ultraviolet and blue LEDs. The effects of charge compensation (Li+, Na+, and K+) on the photoluminescence properties were investigated and K+ was the best one among Li+, Na+, and K+. The reason for the enhancement of the red emission was discussed in detail. K+ played a different role for different doping concentration. Comparing with Y2O2S:Eu3+ red phosphor, Sr3WO6: K+, Eu3+ is much more stable, efficient and suitable for phosphor conversion LEDs. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Red-emitting La1-xSr2AlO5:xEu3+ (x = 0.01–0.06) phosphors have been synthesized via gel combustion (GC) approach and their structure and luminescent characteristics were analyzed in detail. The tetragonal crystal structure (I4/mcm space group) of all generated La1-xSr2AlO5:xEu3+ (x = 0.01–0.06) phosphors have been established by X-ray diffraction and rietveld analysis. The shape and size of the phosphor has been examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the estimated crystallite size was found to be 32–65 nm. Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis confirmed the chemical composition of the synthesized materials. The diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) were used to compute the band gap energies (Eg) of the samples which emerged to be in region of 5.373–6.009 eV. The Eu3+ activated LaSr2AlO5 phosphors produce red emissions at 579, 592, 614, 656 and 708 nm, when excited at 395 nm. These emission bands are caused by 5D0→7FJ (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) electronic transitions of Eu3+ ion. The Judd-Ofelt theory further supports the performance of LaSr2AlO5:Eu3+ phosphors as a red emitting substance with high branching ratio corresponding to 5D0→7F2 transition from Eu3+ center present in the low symmetry site. Computed chromaticity coordinates (x, y) indicate a high degree of color purity in the phosphors, providing additional evidence for the presence of red emission. Temperature dependent emission (PL) spectra revealed good thermal stability of the synthesized nanophosphors with activation energy (Ea) of 0.1384 eV.

Abstract:Sr2NaMg2V3O12:xEu phosphors with uniform particle size/morphology and good dispersion can be synthesized via solid state reaction. Under the optimum excitation wavelength of ∼340 nm, the Sr2NaMg2V3O12:xEu phosphor displays the broad emission band at ∼500 nm (blue-green emission, 3T1,2→1A1 transition of [VO4]3– and sharp emission peak at ∼610 nm (red emission, 5D0→7F2 transition of Eu3+), respectively. With the Eu3+ content increasing, the emission intensity of [VO4]3– decreases gradually while the emission intensity of Eu3+ increases, which is ascribed to the energy transfer from [VO4]3– to Eu3+ ions. The decay time of [VO4]3– (∼500 nm) increases gradually with the Eu3+ content increasing. The energy transfer efficiency and mechanism of [VO4]3–→Eu3+ ions were analyzed, respectively. The emission color of Sr2NaMg2V3O12:xEu phosphor was regulated from green to red via altering the Eu3+ ions concentration. It is delightful for us that the white color emission can be just achieved when the Eu3+ content is 5 at% (x = 0.05), and the w-LED can be assembled. By studying the luminescence temperature dependence and activation energy of Sr2NaMg2V3O12:xEu phosphor, it is shown that the phosphor has good thermal stability. The Sr2NaMg2V3O12:xEu powder is expected to be a new type of phosphor widely used in light and display areas.

Abstract:Concentration quenching, which generally originates from serious energy migrations among the uniformly distributed luminescent centers in the host matrix, is a key factor to influence the luminescence properties of materials. Different from previous reports, we demonstrate a novel fluorescence-quenching mechanism attributable to the second-phase Eu 2 W 2 O 9 in non-equivalent substituted SrWO 4 : x Eu 3+ phosphors. The crystal structure, elemental distribution, and luminescence properties of the as-prepared SrWO 4 : x Eu 3+ phosphors are systematically investigated. A second-phase Eu 2 W 2 O 9 is confirmed when the Eu 3+ -doping concentration exceeds 20%, which produces the new structure defects and energy-transfer paths, resulting in fluorescence quenching in this material. This finding gives a new perspective to analyze the concentration-quenching mechanism of the non-equivalent substituted phosphors and can help in the design of new, efficient luminescence materials. In addition, the as-prepared SrWO 4 : x Eu 3+ phosphors exhibit a strong intrinsic excitation in the range of 355–425 nm, which is accompanied by the Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates at (0.653, 0.347) and stable color purity of up to 94.52%. A packaged white light-emitting diode with CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.398, 0.335), correlated color temperature of 3132 K, and color rendering index of 84.3 is fabricated by SrWO 4 :20%Eu 3+ phosphors with blue BAM:Eu 2+ and green YAGB:Tb 3+ phosphors in a near-ultraviolet chip.

Abstract:White LED applications are still constrained by the extremely efficient narrow band red emitting phosphors. Meanwhile, the concentration quenching induced by energy migration is the main reason to limit the emission intensity in a red emitting phosphor. Therefore, developing a novel red emitting material with energy migration limitation seems necessary. Here, we proposed and realized the non-concentration quenching doping of Eu3+ ions in Sr9Y2-2xW4O24: xEu3+ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) phosphor for the first time by means of the host preferential selection. By clearly investigating the crystal structure and luminescence kinetics, the long-distance between the nearby Eu3+ ions and the low phonon energy is the main reason that suppresses the energy migration and the cross-relaxation among Eu3+ ions. These advantages result in a high internal (90.47%) and external quantum efficiency (42.1%) of Sr9Eu2W4O24. With the help of the Judd-Oflet theory and the large value of oscillator strength Ω2, Eu3+ ions are verified to occupy the non-symmetric lattice site with high color purity (94.4%). In addition, only 5.2% emission intensity loss at 140 °C can guarantee its application in LED devices, and SYWO: Eu3+ phosphor has high thermal tolerance, high color stability, excellent moisture resistance and superior physical/chemical stability, which has broad practical spectral application prospects. The prepared WLED shows superior performance, and the calculated NTSC values are as high as 101.8% and 104.7%, respectively. For comparison, the optical performances of the Sr9Y2W4O24: Eu3+ phosphor outperform the standard commercial red phosphors, Y2O3: Eu3+, Y2O2S: Eu3+, and almost equals K2MnF6. These results may pave the way for fresh approaches to the study of high-performance Eu3+-activated phosphors.

The phase, photoluminescence and energy transfer of the phosphors were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), photoluminescence (PL) and luminescence decay respectively. It is found that the emission of the Eu{sup 3+} substituted double perovskites depends on both the site symmetry of the activators and the excitation wavelengths. Based on the decay analysis of Sr{sub 2}CaW{sub x}Mo{sub 1−x}O{sub 6} matrix and Eu{sup 3+} doped samples, the energy transfer efficiencies between the host and activators Eu{sup 3+} were investigated. The results of the emission tunable phosphors indicate their potential applications in LEDs.

We study the crystal structure and luminescence properties (e.g. the excitation and emission spectra, the concentration dependent spectra, and fluorescent lifetimes) of the samples. SMLWO:Eu3+ phosphor with excitation at 324, 396, and 466 nm emits red light due to the 5 D 0 → 7 F 0, 7 F 1, 7 F 2, 7 F 3, 7 F 4, and 7 F 5 transitions of Eu3+ ion. We investigate the influence of excitation wavelength and Eu3+ concentration on the luminescence properties of the samples. We confirm the optimal Eu3+ concentration (∼8 mol%) in SMLWO:Eu3+ phosphor via the concentration dependent emission spectra of samples, and explain the luminous mechanism of SMLWO:Eu3+ phosphor by using the energy level diagram and energy transfer of Eu3+ ion.

Abstract:Red-emitting Li3Ba2Gd3(WO4)8: x at.% Eu3+ (0.5 ≤ x ≤ 10) phosphors were effectively produced using a conventional solid-state reaction method at high temperature in air atmosphere. The phosphors exhibited monoclinic crystalline structure with the C2/c space group and 2/m point group. The unit cell parameters determined from the Rietveld refinement for 3 at.% doped sample are a = 5.2149(4) Å, b = 12.7447(1) Å, c = 19.2058(3) Å, α = γ = 90°, β = a^c = 91.9315(1)° and Vcalc = 1275.748(2) Å3. Photoluminescence spectra, lifetimes, colour coordinates and purity, and temperature-dependent emission spectra have been systematically studied. Upon excitation at 395 nm, the phosphors displayed red emission with a peak centered at 614 nm, which was associated with the 5D0→7F2 electrical dipolar transition of Eu3+. At the same time, the influence of different Eu3+ ion concentration on the photoluminescence intensity is also discussed. The optimal concentration of Eu3+ ions in Li3Ba2Gd3(WO4)8 was found to be 3 at.%. The mechanism behind concentration quenching was ascribed to dipole–dipole interactions, and the critical distance for energy transfer among Eu3+ ions was determined to be 7.409 Å. The Judd–Ofelt theory was utilized to assess the intensity parameters and radiative properties. The fluorescence decay times were also determined for the different concentration levels of Eu3+ cations. The chromatic coordinates of Li3Ba2Gd3(WO4)8: Eu3+ were found to be (0.653, 0.345), closely resembling the standard red light (0.670, 0.330) and demonstrated high colour purity (98.42 %) under excitation at 395 nm. Moreover, the phosphors Li3Ba2Gd3(WO4)8: Eu3+ exhibited favorable thermal stability, characterized by an activation energy of 0.219 eV. The aforementioned findings indicate that the phosphors Li3Ba2Gd3(WO4)8 doped with Eu3+ have the potential to function as a red-emitting phosphor in near-ultraviolet-driven white light-emitting diodes.
