A Blended Learning Model Based on Smart Learning Environment to Improve College Students’ Information Literacy

Abstract:Under the epidemic situation, it is more and more important to improve college students’ information literacy.In this paper, we are the first to propose an information literacy improvement model for college students based on smart learning environment. On the basis of previous studies and literature analysis, we describe the elements of the smart learning environment for the cultivation of college students’ information literacy.These elements, which we summarize as CIAP, consist of four aspects: conceptual level, intelligent level, action level and process level.Based on CIAP,we propose a new blended learning model to improve college students’ information literacy sustainably. The first is to expand learning resources by special topics; The second is to create a learning environment intelligently; The third is to clarify the interactive learning activities; The fourth is the innovative mutual learning process; The fifth is the timely verification of learning feedback; The sixth is the multiple optimization of learning evaluation.We have carried out targeted experiments to test the validity of the blended mode.Through the concrete empirical study of college students majoring in engineering technology in Chinese university, it is concluded that there is a statistically significant difference between the post-test data of the experimental class and the control class.The results prove that the blended learning based on smart learning environment proposed in this paper has a significant effect on the cultivation of information literacy of college students.This paper discusses the spiral development of information literacy enabled by the smart learning environment. Our work involving studies of the thinking and direction of the sustainable development of information literacy training proved to be encouraging.

Abstract:Information literacy has became a central issue of modern society. The rapid growth of information technology (IL) and the emergence of new digital devices not only require changes in the concept of IL itself, but also in practice. This paper discusses findings of study of design and development research with the goal of study was to develop the development of blended model of information literacy instruction (ILI) for higher education library instruction. Data were collected through a checklist, pretest, posttest, and attitude questionnaire throughout a series of formative evaluation stages. The data obtained were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result showed that the A6S (analyze, select, search, sort, synthesize, share, and self-evaluation) information model effective to enhance students’ IL. offered recommendation regarding implementation in library instructions
“Information Talent” Sharing Program: Discussion on an Assistant Form of Interdisciplinary Information Literacy Education

Abstract:Information literacy is a growing requirement for all majors, while engineering students have a stronger interest in developing this skill. Lead Users, who are proficient in information and digital literacy, are particularly adept at their profession. To address this, our university's subject librarian explored the expertise of Lead Users and developed an “Information Talent” program to facilitate interdisciplinary academic sharing. The program covers a wide range of topics and provides students with advanced information literacy skills and knowledge that cannot be acquired through traditional lectures. By using Lead Users as resources and supplementing original information literacy education, the program aims to improve students' information literacy. We have implemented a series of flexible, interactive, innovative activities that have enriched our university's information literacy education system and enhanced subject services on the new academic platform. These activities have been integrated into the university's academic ecology and received widespread recognition for supporting student personnel training. To ensure the sustainability of the program, we have incorporated the database system of “Information Talent”, which can sort out activity details by topic, talent, type, scope, and other keywords. Through analysis of the database system, we can effectively grasp the key details of activities and accumulate sufficient resources to guide future activities, ensuring the sustainable development of the program. This paper analyzes the practice of the “Information Talent” sharing program in detail, including key points and difficulties in the process, as well as solutions and ideas. Additionally, it proposes some ideas for future activities and sustainable development.

Abstract:Information literacy (IL) research tends to fall into one of two spaces. In the conceptual space the research concern rests with understanding the experience and core elements of the practice and how it emerges. In the practical space the execution and outcome of the practice as markers of successful teaching and learning are the focus. The division between these spaces and the lack of researcher/practitioner convergence create a conundrum that limits our ability to theorise IL, to adequately situate IL in library and information science research, to champion its benefits outside the library and information science field, or to promote to funding bodies the impact of IL. To address this conundrum a theory and foundational model of IL is described which attempts to reconstruct the IL space and its enactments without privileging research or practice.

Abstract:The fusion of learning, information, and technology presents dynamic challenges for all librarians, educators and students in 21st century libraries and schools. At the heart of this fusion is the growth of a pervasive, integrated information environment characterized by vast quantities of digital content, open choice, collaborative and participatory digital spaces, and the transition of the web environments from consumption of information to creation of information. This environment heralds important opportunities for librarians and teachers to rethink, re-imagine and recreate a dynamic approaches to information literacy instruction. Drawing on an extensive body of research undertaken through the Center for International Scholarship in School Libraries (CISSL), and published research on both information literacy and constructivist learning, this paper provides a critical examination of the current status of information literacy: its multiple conceptualizations, competing models, viewpoints, and its operationalizations in educational and library environments. The paper will challenge information literacy practices which center on simplistic, reductionist approaches to information literacy development, and the separation of information process and knowledge content. In particular it will address apparent contradictions in espoused conceptions of information literacy which revolve around "knowledge": knowledge construction, critical thinking, problem solving and the development of knowledgeable people; and information literacy practices which revolve around "information": a predominant focus on skills of access and evaluation of resources and with less attention given to engaging with found information to develop deep knowledge and understanding. The paper will present a series of challenges for moving forward with information literacy agendas in libraries and schools.

Abstract:As information becomes more abundant and accessible, today’s workers will find it critical to develop the soft skills of information literacy. Prior to graduation, students need regular practice evaluating the credibility of common business information sources. To support these goals, we propose and describe a teaching methodology that borrows from the field of librarianship and uses concepts, mindsets, and practices from the study of information literacy. In addition to providing an information literacy-based framework for use when developing course assignments, we offer an extended example that makes use of this approach.

New Review of Children's Literature and Librarianship

Abstract:Although models are often assumed to constitute the end product of a research project, it is not unusual for them to be refined after subsequent study or thought. Having presented a model of young people's information behavior in a previous paper elsewhere, the authors here offer a more compact version and explore the possibilities for its application in a teaching context with pupils. Use of models in this way can play an important part in reducing the longstanding gap between information-seeking research and information literacy instruction. Drawing inspiration from earlier work undertaken by Shenton with Masters students at Northumbria University, the authors demonstrate how it is possible to evolve from such models pro formas that can be completed by pupils to help them in relation to their own information-seeking activity. Shenton and Hay-Gibson feature here one such pro forma, intended for use by secondary schoolers. They discuss its value in promoting metacognition and indicate how this type of tool may be introduced at one of various points in an assignment task: in advance (as a pupil planning aid), while the activity is taking place (so as to guide information-seeking as it happens) or at the end (to aid summative reflection).

Abstract:This paper focuses on how one university library embarked on a journey to provide information literacy instruction when a change in curriculum altered the library's role in a first-term research methods course. Enter the Scholarly Skills Community: a virtual learning landscape, consisting of more than 20 modules designed to fill gaps in information literacy and research skills. Embedded into the university's learning management system, the Scholarly Skills Community is an interactive, asynchronous destination for users to cultivate new knowledge and earn micro-credentials on topics related to information literacy and scholarly writing.

Abstract:Five academic librarians at the University of Calgary were invited to collaborate on an inquiry-based learning course. Each librarian represented different liaison responsibilities and expertise and was paired with a course section of primarily first-year students, an instructor, and a teaching assistant. The range of experiences among the librarians provided insights into issues of library partnerships, embedded librarianship, and information literacy instruction. Benefits of the collaboration included opportunities for instruction, positive student perceptions, skill building, and teaching innovations, while areas for further development included sustainability and role definition. Proposed areas of future growth include quantitative exploration of librarian involvement in inquiry- based learning.

Abstract:In this article the authors argue that progress in the development of information literacy (IL) has been hindered by tendencies such as: denying that information literacy is even a subject, paying exclusive attention to forces outside the discipline and forming information literacy silos. The authors start by reflecting on formative developments in information literacy outside North America in the late 1990s-early 2000s, and noting that IL has not evolved from that period as much as one might expect. They identify hindrances to information literacy’s formation as a discipline, and relate their discussion to changing notions of disciplinarity. The authors present ‘Information Literacy in the lifecourse’ as an example focus which could stimulate engagement from researchers and practitioners who are currently situated in different information literacy silos. They conclude that taking a disciplinary and lifecourse approach to information literacy would open up opportunities for working in a collegiate way, both within the information literacy community and with those outside it, and provide a more robust foundation for influencing policy.

Abstract:In 2017, 120 University West nursing students wrote a scientific report as an examination. Merely 30 students passed on their first attempt and one of the identified shortcomings concerned information literacy. In collaboration with the course coordinators, the liaison librarian modified the course design adding new contents as well as new assignments to create a kickstart for the students who lack the information literacy required in higher education. The module in information literacy training was extended to provide the students with the skills needed for successful results and thus making them better equipped for the rest of their studies, as well as for lifelong learning. This best practice article accounts for the course development, focusing on library instruction. Furthermore, it posits that the principles of andragogy, student activating methods and the united effort to meet the students where they are, have enhanced their learning process and consequently their information literacy. In 2020 and 2021, the students who passed the scientific report examination on their first attempt more than doubled. Due to librarian involvement, new pedagogical approaches, and a fruitful collaboration with course coordinators, these students’ information literacy skills seem to have improved.

Abstract:Pupils need to develop information literacy (IL) skills in schools in order to be active members of a skilled workforce, for lifelong learning and digital citizenship. However, there has been little focus on the extent to which this happens in a classroom setting and on information competencies of teachers. As part of a broader study of teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of IL, librarians in schools in Northern Ireland were interviewed. Findings reveal low levels of collaboration with teachers. Recommendations are made regarding how to overcome challenges involved in developing teachers’ IL so that they can better support learners.
