Comparison of DHS and Gamma3 Nail in the Treatment of Intertrochanteric Fractures of Femur

Abstract:Objective To discuss a reasonable treatment for intertrochanteric fractures of femur by comparing of effects between Gamma3 nail and DHS fixation.Methods Totally 89 intertrochanteric fractures patients in our department with complete clinical data were retrospectively analyzed.All the patients were treated with Gamma3 nail or DHS fixation from January 2006 to September 2011.38 cases were fixed with Gamma3 nail and 51 cases with DHS.The pathological fractures and severe multiple trauma were excluded.The clinical results of the two groups were documented and compared in terms of the operation time,the blood lost,lose of reduction and fracture healing time.Functional recovery was evaluated according to the Harris hip score after surgery.Results The average follow-up period was 10.4 months(range,6~12).All the fractures healed.There were no significant differences between Gamma3 nail group and DHS group for the average operating time and the average blood loss during surgery(P>0.05).Compared with the group of DHS,the group of Gamma3 nail had obvious advantages in terms of lose of reduction,fracture healing time and recovery of hip function(P<0.05).Conclusion Both of the two methods are reasonable treatment for stable intertrochanteric fractures of femur.For unstable intertrochanteric fractures of femur,Gamma3 nail could reduced lose of reduction to avoid coax vara more effectively comparing with DHS.
