Abstract:Objective:To assess the use of the Chinese version of the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation(BSI-CV)in China.Method:Using Tianjin City as the urban location and Laicheng District of Laiwu City of Shandong Province as the rural location,participants aged 18 or older were identified at each site using a multi-stage random sampling method.Trained interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews in respondents' homes using a questionnaire battery that included the BSI-CV which assesses both the ideation in the last week and when the subject feeling the worst(most depressed or most suicidal).The internal reliability and validity of the scale were assessed using the results of 569 urban and 603 rural subjects who completed the first interview.The test-retest reliability was assessed with the results of 256 urban and 504 rural subjects who completed the first interview and a repeat interview 5~8 days later.Results:(1)The scale' s internal consistency was good.Using data from the first interview,the Cronbach α of the scale of "the last week" and "feeling the worst" were 0.68 and 0.87 in all subjects,0.72 and 0.84 in urban respondents,and 0.57 and 0.88 in rural respondents,respectively.(2)The scale' s test-retest reliability was good.The ICC of the scale of "the last week" and "feeling the worst" were 0.64 and 0.76 in all subjects,were 0.84 and 0.76 in urban residents,and were 0.39 and 0.76 in rural residents,respectively.(3)The scale' s validity was also good.At the first interview,the score of the scale of "feeling the worst" was significantly higher in those with a prior attempt [(9.75±9.79)vs.(0.86±3.17);P<0.001] than in those without a prior attempt.But there was no significant difference in the total score of the scale of "the last week" [(0.42±0.79)vs.(0.14±0.78);P=0.057].Conclusion:The BSI-CV is valid and reliable when employed with adult community members in China,especially for the assessment of ideation when the subject was feeling the worst.
