Abstract:It has become the aims of some top Chinese universities to train high-quality people and innovators with an international vision and to build themselves into world-class institutions.This paper analyzes the necessity to develop students’ ability of using professional English in top Chinese universities at present.This paper discusses about the necessity and significance to teach disciplinary courses in English considering the current problems of teaching General English in Chinese higher education context.The discussion also bases itself on the requirements for undergraduate students of Zhejiang University in order to build itself into a top-notch international university with world-leading disciplines.The requirements include visiting overseas countries or regions for academic purposes during their full-time study,joining Student Research Training Program,attending international academic conferences,reading technical literature in English for research,going abroad for further studies after graduation,etc.This paper also discusses the positive effect of teaching disciplinary courses in English to facilitate the going-abroad of students in China and the coming-in of overseas students,and to drive the materials science discipline of Zhejiang University to a higher level.
