Abstract:We developed a mathematical maneuvering model that considers finite water depth as a critical parameter to predict ship maneuvers in deep and shallow waters. Our model comprises an Abkowitz-type maneuvering model for deep water, referred to as the basic model, and depth-dependent correction functions for shallow waters. The hydrodynamic derivatives of the basic model were obtained by numerical captive model tests. The coefficients used in the correction functions were defined as hydrodynamic shallow water coefficients and were derived by conducting regression analyses, correlating maneuvering forces and moments with water depth. These maneuvering forces and moments at varying water depths were computed using the Abkowitz-type model with hydrodynamic derivatives obtained for the corresponding water depth. To investigate the maneuvering of inland waterway vessels in shallow waters, we applied the proposed model on a typical single-screw twin-rudders inland waterway bulk carrier operating on the Rhine River. To verify our developed water depth-dependent model, we conducted simulations of standard turning circle, zigzag, evasive action, and direct spiral maneuvers at the same water depth as the Abkowitz-type model. These simulated maneuvers yielded highly consistent results between both models. Subsequently, we validated the proposed model by comparing with the full-scale trials conducted at a deep-water testing site. Moreover, to enhance the validation of our model in shallow waters, we compared the predicted maneuvering forces and moments with the forces measured in experimental captive model tests. Ultimately, we employed our model to predict ship maneuvers at three newly considered water depths, ranging from deep to very shallow water, and assessed the maneuverability of inland waterway vessels in deep and shallow waters.
