Abstract:Seminar classes are problem-oriented and student-centered,which lay emphasis not only on learning outcomes but also learning process. The class usually starts with a problem description given by the teacher, followed by collaborative exploration of the problem by both the teacher and students, and ends with a discussion of the research report written by students to tackle the problem.Employing the methodology of action research and content analysis, the present study found that student engagement rates in seminar classes are noticeably higher than in traditional classes. What’s more, student engagement in seminar classes tends to be more indepth, usually taking the form of an analytical or evaluative comment. The present study also designs two scales to assess student engagement rates, and put forward several suggestions about how to further improve student engagement in seminar classes.
