Bringing Forth the New through the Old: Implications and Significance of Schopenhauer's Philosophy

Abstract:Arthar Schopenhauer's philosophy is both old and new.It is old in form.He inherited the traditional Germen philosophy since Kant and expresses his philosophy in the traditional metaphysical frame.His Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung establishes a metaphysical system based on will that integrates ontology,epistemology,ethics and aesthetics,which seems to be an imitation of Kant's three critiques.In content his philosophy is not always new because he has absorbed some ideas of Plato,Berkeley,Leibniz and Kant.Thus,it is no wonder that some people have criticized his philosophy as some patchwork of out-dated philosophy.However,his philosophy has something new because he has brought forth the new through the old which finds expression in the following: He expands the concept of will and integrates it with life force which he uses as noumenon to establishes a new philosophy.This philosophical approach has directly or indirectly influenced Nietzsche,Bergson,Dilthey and other philosophers,and produced a philosophical movement of voluntarism/life-force that lasted for scores of years.He has also expanded the concept of perceptual intuition which helps explain noumenon(will,life force) through intuition and get rid of the dilemma of Kant's rational thinking of noumenon.
