Empirical Research on the Intergenerational Income Mobility and Its Decomposition of Chinese Urban and Rural Residents

Abstract:By using the two-sample two-stage least square estimator,empirical research has been made on the degree of intergenerational income mobility for Chinese urban and rural residents,furthermore this article also analyzes the mechanism of intergenerational income mobility.The results show that: ①There is rather obvious passing domino effect in the intergenerational income of Chinese residents and the mobility is low.The intergenerational income elasticity of urban residents is higher than that of rural residents.②The intergenerational income mobility in the bottom and top quintile is limited.③We find that the intergenerational transmission of education and occupation are the important channels of intergenerational income transmission by decomposing the intergenerational income elasticity.The policy implication of this article is that: in order to prevent intergenerational transmission of poverty,promote social equity and maintain social stability,the government should devote major efforts to developing education,giving more education resources to rural areas,backward areas,poverty group and weak group.At the same time,the government should also devote to setting up the unified labor market between the urban and rural areas, eliminating information asymmetry and segregation in the labor market,and creating equal employment opportunities.
