Abstract:With the fast development of China, today's medical students in China are very diverse in education backgrounds, experiences, culture, and learning styles. There are four major sensory modes of learning: visual (V), auditory (A), reading-writing (R), or kinesthetic (K). To determine whether a particular teaching method might satisfy the requirement of students, a learning preference survey with the VARK questionnaire was given to our second-year medical students of Zhejiang University City College School of Medicine. As a result, 98 of 133 students (74 %) returned the completed questionnaire. Only 14.3 % of the students preferred a single mode of information presentation. In contrast, most students (85.7 %) preferred multiple modes of information presentation. The current result suggests that medical instructors in China should be aware of the student's individual preferences in order to make the educational experience more productive and enjoyable. ? Abstract:Students learning may be classified according to the sensory modalities using VARK instrument, which categorizes learning modes as visual (V), auditory (A), reading-writing (R), or kinesthetic (K). We administered the VARK questionnaire to our second-year medical students, and 98 of 133 students (74%) returned the completed questionnaire. Only 14.3% of the students preferred a single mode of information presentation. In contrast, most students (85.7%) preferred multiple modes of information presentation. Knowing the students preferred modes and using web-based learning system may help the instructors to tailor to the student's individual preference in the teaching of medical science.

Abstract:Oversea students with rare languages are characterized by severe language barrier,difficulty in study,difficulty in administration,weakness of basic medicine teaching,and lack of standardized clinical manipulation.Based on these characters,reform of clinical teaching was undertaken during the teaching process.Definite teaching principles were made,teaching methods were innovated,and teaching materials of various media were carefully chosen according to the teaching situation,and were renewed continuously.Good teaching effect was achieved,and all the oversea students with rare languages were satisfied with our teaching.

Abstract:Objective To explore the application effect of multidimensional Chinese orthopedics teaching practice teaching method.Methods The choice of traditional Chinese medicine, Changchun level 2011 Department of traditional Chinese medicine four class 192 students as the object of study, from March 2015 to June 2016 as study time points, to the class as a unit grouping, before two classes as the control group, application routine teaching method for practical teaching, two classes as the experimental group, using multi-dimensional teaching method teaching, through tests and teachers' questionnaire form contrast two teaching methods of teaching effect and clinical practical effect at the end of the semester.Results In the control group, the average score of the ifnal examination (81.37±1.60), 80.04% of the teachers' satisfaction during the internship period. In the experimental group, the average score of the ifnal examination (92.52±2.27), and the patients' satisfaction degree was 91.71%. Compared with the two groups of students learning achievement and practice, the results have significant statistical differences (P<0.05).Conclusion Multidimensional practice teaching in traditional Chinese orthopedics is very positive and positive inlfuence, which not only can signiifcantly improve the speed and quality of teaching, better able to from many aspects, improve the quality of orthopedics and traumatology, and can be applied in the teaching work.

Abstract:BackgroundStudents commencing their medical training arrive with different educational backgrounds and a diverse range of learning experiences. Consequently, students would have developed preferred approaches to acquiring and processing information or learning style preferences. Understanding first-year students’ learning style preferences is important to success in learning. However, little is understood about how learning styles impact learning and performance across different subjects within the medical curriculum. Greater understanding of the relationship between students’ learning style preferences and academic performance in specific medical subjects would be valuable.MethodsThis cross-sectional study examined the learning style preferences of first-year medical students and how they differ across gender. This research also analyzed the effect of learning styles on academic performance across different subjects within a medical education program in a Central Asian university. A total of 52 students (57.7% females) from two batches of first-year medical school completed the Index of Learning Styles Questionnaire, which measures four dimensions of learning styles: sensing-intuitive; visual-verbal; active-reflective; sequential-global.ResultsFirst-year medical students reported preferences for visual (80.8%) and sequential (60.5%) learning styles, suggesting that these students preferred to learn through demonstrations and diagrams and in a linear and sequential way. Our results indicate that male medical students have higher preference for visual learning style over verbal, while females seemed to have a higher preference for sequential learning style over global. Significant associations were found between sensing-intuitive learning styles and performance in Genetics [β = −0.46, B = −0.44, p < 0.01] and Anatomy [β = −0.41, B = −0.61, p < 0.05] and between sequential-global styles and performance in Genetics [β = 0.36, B = 0.43, p < 0.05]. More specifically, sensing learners were more likely to perform better than intuitive learners in the two subjects and global learners were more likely to perform better than sequential learners in Genetics.ConclusionThis knowledge will be helpful to individual students to improve their performance in these subjects by adopting new sensing learning techniques. Instructors can also benefit by modifying and adapting more appropriate teaching approaches in these subjects. Future studies to validate this observation will be valuable.

Abstract:In order to help students correct learning attitude,and develop learning habits independently,thereby further enhancing learning effect,a questionnaire survey in a longitudinal direction,including the reasons for choice of special field,learning purpose and motivation,classroom and after-school performance,examination preparation situation and attitude for examination marks,was conducted on 386 students majoring in laboratory medicine and a series of analyses were made correspondingly.The data indicates that the students hold different views and attitudes on these aspects mentioned above and their self-study habits and effects are influenced by many factors,such as learning responsibility,interest in special fields,goals in life etc.

Abstract:Background: The concept of learning style is quite important for teachers to teach, organize students' learning experiences, and accomplish educational goals. Motivation is one of the most important psychological concepts in education. Motivation is multidimensional and ranges from amotivation to extrinsic motivation and intrinsic motivation. When students are motivated extrinsically, they enjoy striving toward rewards and goals which may differ from individual goals. Intrinsically motivated students enjoy exploring, learning, and curiosity-oriented academic efforts. Understanding learning styles can make it easier to create, modify, and develop more efficient curriculum and educational programs. It can also encourage students' participation in these programs and motivate them to gain professional knowledge This study aims to determine the learning styles of medical school students and to evaluate whether there is a relationship between their learning styles and academic motivation and the sociodemographic variables. Methods: In this study a questionnaire containing socio-demographic factors, Grasha-Reichmann Learning Styles Scale, Academic Motivation Scale was filled out by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th -year medical students of the 2019-2020 academic year. Frequency, percentage, mean, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and independent group t-test (for analyzing data with normal distribution) were applied. Mann Whitney U test, Kruskal Wallis test, and Spearman correlation analysis were used for analyzing data without normal distribution. Results: We found that the mean of independent learning was the highest among the learning style dimensions, and the mean of the intrinsic motivation to know (IMKN) was the highest among the academic motivation dimensions. We found that there were significant relationships between independent learning and intrinsic motivation (IM), between avoidant learning and extrinsic motivation (EM) and between collaborative learning and IMKN, IM to accomplish things (IMAT) and IM to experience stimulation (IMES). Conclusion: We think that different teaching methods can be applied to strengthen collaborative learning, participant learning, and intrinsic motivation. We hope that this research will contribute to medical education on the subject of establishing appropriate teaching methods. Teachers have to plan and implement activities based on students' learning styles and academic motivation to encourage students to effectively participate in the classroom.

Abstract:In a scenario of ongoing changes in the theory and methodology of teaching, student-centered practices are crucial in improving teaching and learning outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate whether the learning styles and attitudes (connected and separate knowing) associated with the curriculum differ among medical students. The research subjects consisted of 43 first- and second-year medical students attending a post-baccalaureate medical education program exclusively for foreign students at a comprehensive university in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. A self-administered Attitudes Toward Thinking and Learning Survey (ATTLS) was used to assess the differences in learning styles and attitudes among grades, gender, and nationality of these post-baccalaureate medical students. The reliability value of Cronbach Alpha coefficients for all items of ATTLS was 0.93. These medical students reported significantly higher connected knowing styles than separate knowing. The average score of the connected knowing for first-year students taking the "International Health" course is significantly higher than that of second-year students taking the "Population Health and Sustainable Development" course. There is no difference in the separate knowing between these two curricula. The learning styles and attitudes of students participating in the teaching process showed no difference in grade, gender, and nationality. The evidence that there is a significant interaction effect of grade, gender, and nationality examined with the separate knowing, rather than the connected knowing, suggests that this heterogenicity of learning methodology needs to be considered and integrated into future teaching methods.

Evaluation of Effect of the Mobile Teaching Mode of General Practice

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the effect of mobile teaching mode of general practice.Methods The mobile teaching mode has been applied to general practice teaching in Zhejiang University since 2014.The participants enrolled in this study were 411 students majoring in clinical medicine in Zhejiang University.Of them,261 took general practice course in 2016 and 150 took that in 2013 were selected as the mobile teaching mode group and the general teaching mode group,respectively.We used a questionnaire survey to obtain the baseline data of the students,and their assessment of the course,teaching effect,and mobile teaching mode.Results There were no significant differences in gender,age and educational attainment between the two groups (P ＞0.05).Two groups differed significantly in evaluating the necessity of setting up the course,and in assessing the values of teaching the course bilingually and its exercises including the questions from the National Medical Licensing Examination (NMLE) and the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE),and the satisfaction with the teaching mode of the course (P ＜ 0.05).Education attainment was closely associated with the difference in evaluating the necessity of setting up the course,values of teaching the course bilingually and its exercises including the questions from the NMLE and USMLE,and the satisfaction with the mobile teaching mode between the students in the mobile teaching mode group (P ＜ 0.05).The value scores of the course assessed by the mobile teaching mode group were higher than those assessed by the general teaching mode group (P ＜0.01).Significant differences existed between the groups in the aspects of the frequency of attendance in the course,examination results of the course,and assessment of the teaching effect (P ＜0.05).Of the 261 students in the mobile teaching mode group,110 (42.1％) thought that learning the general practice course was contribute to the study of medical knowledge,215 (82.4％) considered that learning the course was beneficial to improving the medial English,152 (58.2％) hold that learning the course could help them understand the medical development in foreign countries,and 7 (2.7％) did not clearly express their ideas about this course;109 (41.8％) thought that the online exercises could improve their interest in attending the course,121 (46.4％) believed that the online exercises were helpful to enhance their interest in the NMLE,162 (62.1％)made a point that the exercises were contribute to the understanding of the questions of USMLE,but 35 (13.4％) thought that the exercises had little benefits.Conclusion The mobile teaching mode of general practice has better teaching effect.It is in line with the requirements of modern teaching and the needs of students' development,so it is worthy of promotion.

Learning style preference and the academic achievements of medical students in an integrated curriculum

Abstract:Understanding how individuals learn best, known as learning style, is integral to optimizing educational outcomes. This analytical study was conducted among students in their fourth year who finalized their problem-based activities at the College of Medicine, University of Bisha, Saudi Arabia. The visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic (VARK) model was adopted to assess individual differences in learning preferences and their correlation with academic achievement in the problem-based learning (PBL)-dependent curriculum. The online self-administered survey was completed by 64 students with a response rate of 79%. Of these, 63.5% were men and 36.5% were women, with a mean age of 21.9 years and a grade point average (GPA) of 3.83. Analysis of learning style distribution revealed that 34.9% preferred visual, 54% preferred auditory, 17.5% preferred read/write, and 90.5% preferred kinesthetic styles. Also, combined learning modalities revealed that 14.3% preferred unimodal, 74.6% bimodal, and 11.1% trimodal approaches. The most frequent unimodal approach was kinesthetic, while auditory/kinesthetic and visual/auditory/kinesthetic were the predominant bimodal and trimodal preferences. No significant differences in GPA were found among students with different selective learning styles or combined learning modalities, as determined by one-way ANOVA and chi-square tests. Spearman's rho correlation revealed a positive correlation between the learning modality and the auditory style (P < 0.001). Also, a negative correlation was identified between reading/writing versus kinesthetic and auditory versus visual learning styles (P = 0.001). However, no significant correlations were identified between grades or GPA and specific learning styles. It can be concluded that the integrated PBL-dependent curriculum adopted at the College of Medicine, University of Bisha, is a suitable teaching modality satisfying different learning styles, but continuous monitoring is crucial.

Abstract:Objective The different performance between 8-year program medical students with different learning styles in the case-based learning (CBL) sessions were investigated.Methods 48 medical students under 8-year program medical sutdents were divided into separate groups by Felder's learning style inventory questionnaire.The performance in internal medicine clinical practice was evaluated by present system.Results There were more students identified as reflective,sensual,visualand global learning styles.There were no significant gender differences in quizzes' scores and CBL performance.However,the CBL performance was higher in distinct active students than in distinct reflective students.Conclusions Learning styles questionnaire provides an optimal option to identify the different learning style in medical students and improve the effect of CBL.

Abstract:Introduction Generally, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) courses are now given to modern medicine students without proper course scheduling, resulting in poor teaching results. Methods To analyze the main factors affecting TCM learning, we surveyed the medical students and TCM teachers from Xiangya School of Medicine of Central South University via online questionnaires. The questionnaire comprised two parts, the students' part included the basic information, the subjective cognition in TCM, the attitude toward TCM course arrangements, and the attitude toward curriculum content and the design of TCM. The teachers' part included the basic information, the attitudes and opinions on TCM course arrangements, and suggestions and views on TCM teaching reform. The related data were collected from 187 medical students divided into two groups, namely, clinical medical students and non-clinical medical students. Results We found a more positive attitude toward TCM [including “Scientific nature of TCM” ( P = 0.03) and “Necessity for modern medicine students to learn TCM” ( P = 0.037)] in clinical medical students compared with non-clinical medical students, clinical and non-clinical medical students tended to find TCM courses difficult, and the students prefer clinical training to be better than theoretical teaching, while the teachers believe that lecture-based education should have a more significant proportion. Discussion Hence, to optimize the current TCM teaching, we conducted education reform, including differentiated teaching, hybrid teaching, and selective teaching.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Learning medical English is particularly challenging for non-native English-speaking medical students. The Smart Class teaching module is a new online teaching module for rehabilitation-related medical English, the efficacy of which has yet to be established in the literature. Gender differences should also not be ignored in our study, taking into account the proven performance differences between males and females in language learning. MATERIAL AND METHODS First-year physiotherapy students in Grade 2018 and Grade 2019 at Guangzhou Medical University were recruited to participate in this study. Grade 2019, as the experimental group, completed the Smart Class teaching module, while Grade 2018, as the control group, completed the Traditional Class teaching module. The efficacy of both modules was assessed objectively using the students' medical English exam scores and subjectively using the students' responses to a questionnaire. RESULTS In total, 242 questionnaires were distributed, and 210 valid questionnaires were returned, of which 119 were from the Smart Class teaching module group and 91 were from the Traditional Class teaching module group. There was no statistically significant difference between the medical English exam scores of the 2 groups (P=0.324). However, the subjective assessment revealed that the students experienced a significantly greater burden from the workload in the Smart Class teaching module group (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We found both the Smart Class teaching module and the Traditional Class teaching module achieved similar teaching outcomes. Therefore, the former represents a viable alternative teaching option for situations where traditional class teaching is not possible.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Identifying and employing appropriate learning styles could play an important role in selecting teaching styles in order to improve education.OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the relationship between learning styles preferences and gender, educational major and status in first year students at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences.PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study employing the visual-aural-read/write-kinesthetic (VARK) learning style's questionnaire was done on 184 first year students of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing and health services management at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2012. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed through experts' views and reliability was calculated using Cronbach's alpha coefficients (α = 0.86). Data were analyzed using the SPSS ver.18 software and x(2) test.RESULTS: Out of 184 participants who responded to and returned the questionnaire, 122 (66.3%) were female; more than two-thirds (68.5%) of the enrolled students were at the professional doctorate level (medicine, pharmacy, dentistry) and 31.5% at the undergraduate level (nursing and health services management). Eighty-nine (48.4%) students preferred a single-modal learning style. In contrast, the remaining 95 students (51.6%) preferred multi-modal learning styles. A significant relationship between gender and single modal learning styles (P = 0.009) and between status and learning styles (P = 0.04) was observed.CONCLUSIONS: According to the results, male students preferred to use the kinesthetic learning style more than females, while, female students preferred the aural learning style. Knowledge about the learning styles of students at educational institutes is valuable and helps solve learning problems among students, and allows students to become better learners.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the correlation between the self-directed learning ability of medical students and the effect of flipped classroom teaching.Methods:The questionnaire survey was used. From November to December 2020, 123 students of 5-year program enrolled in 2019 in Peking University Health Science Center were chosen as the study objects and Neurobiology is a required course for them. The Medical Students' Autonomous Learning Ability Assessment Scale (MSALAAS) was used to assess the students' self-directed learning ability. The final examination score and a questionnaire survey were used to assess the teaching effect of the course. Descriptive analysis and Mann-Whitney analysis were used to analyze the change of self-directed learning ability of students after the course. One-dimensional linear regression was used to analyze the influence of self-directed learning ability on the final examination score, course experience and course assessment. Results:The total score of MSALAAS was increased from [(109.84 ± 14.12) points] to [(113.65±15.88) points] ( P<0.05) after the course. If the total score of the MSALAAS was referred to as an independent variant, and the final examination score, the course experience and course assessment was referred to as a dependent variable, respectively. The one-dimensional linear regression analysis showed that the total score of the MSALAAS was correlated with the final examination score ( B=0.248, t=3.59, P<0.001), the course experience ( B=0.049, t=3.15, P=0.002) and course assessment ( B=0.048, t=3.18, P=0.002). Conclusion:Flipped classroom teaching can promote the improvement of the self-directed learning ability of medical students. In converse, the students with higher self-directed learning ability might achieve higher examination score and get the better course experience and assessment.
