Abstract:Porous magnetic chitosan microspheres with average diameter about 600 pm were prepared by high voltage electrostatic method through mixing Fe3O4 particles into CS with silicagel as pore-forming agent and then adding them into thermal NaOH solution to get porous structure. This research studied the preparation technology, as well as the structure and morphology of microsphere with SEM, the results of which indicate that holes of po-rous magnetic chitosan microspheres with the size approximately 50 pm were uniformly dispersed in the microsphere when the mass volume fraction of chitosan acetic acid aqueous solution was 5% and m(s):m(cs) was 4: 1. Due to its large amount of hydroxyl groups and amino groups, porous magnetic chitosan microspheres could be widely used to deal with acidic dyestuff to improve environment and separated from dirty water by adding magnetic field.

Abstract:Objective:To characterize magnetic chitosan microspheres newly prepared by using a pH adjustment.Methods:The loading dose of the chitosan microspheres were analyzed using ultraviolet spectrograph;the dissolution was determined using a filter-bag diffusion technique and the magnetic target test was conducted by a vitro-simulation technique.Results:The key parameters of the microspheres were as follows:loading capability of drugs 37%,entrapment efficiency 62%,the release rate 75% within 10 hours and the sustained release for 78 hours.The optimal magnetic condition was 2000～3000Gs fro 2 hours.Conclusion:The optimal magnetic chitosan microspheres were achievable by ad- justing pH value.

Abstract:Pollutants detection and water purification are very important to achieve environmental protection and resource utilization. It has become increasingly important and urgent to fabricate novel environmentally–friendly materials to remove various pollutants. Recently, magnetic chitosan–based materials (M-CSbMs) with abundant reactive –NH 2 and –OH groups have been extensively used as adsorbents and photocatalysts for environmental remediation due to its high activity, green sources, biodegradability, and low cost. In this review, several reliable preparation strategies ( in-situ strategy, two-step strategy, and post-deposition strategy) of M-CSbMs are summarized. In-depth discussions regarding the parameters affecting the practical potential of M-CSbMs are highlighted in detail. Importantly, the review focused on the applications of M-CSbMs in effective removal and magnetic solid-phase extraction for contaminants, such as heavy metal ions, organic dyes, antibiotics, and other pollutants. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of M-CSbMs are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application in water purification and solid-phase extraction of contaminants.

In-Situ Preparation of Magnetic Chitosan Nanoparticles in Microemulsion System and Their Adsorption Properties for Dyes

Abstract:The magnetic chitosan nanoparticles(MCN) were in-situ prepared by adding the NaOH solution precipitant into a W/O microemulsion system containing cyclehexane/n-hexanol,chitosan,Fe2+/Fe3+ salts and Triton X-100.The MCN were then modified with ethylenediamine(EMCN) and used for the adsorption of Acid Orange 12(AO12) and Acid Orange 10(AO10).The adsorbents were characterized by TEM,XRD and FT-IR.The results show that EMCN are monodispersed,and have a particle size of 15 nm～40 nm and a saturation magnetization of 25.6 emu/g.The maximum adsorption occurred at pH 4.0 for AO12 and pH 3.0 for AO10,respectively.The adsorption was very quick with the equilibrium time of 40 min～60 min.The equilibrium data fitted well with Langmuir isotherm,and the saturation adsorption capacity was 2.81 mmol/g for AO12 and 1.82 mmol/g for AO10,respectively.The E values(14.95 kJ/mol～18.54 kJ/mol) calculated form D-R isotherm indicated that the chemisorption was predominant on the adsorption.The EMCN could be regenerated using NH4OH/NH4Cl solution(pH 10.0) as elution.

Abstract:This paper reviews the preparation of magnetic biochar and its application in wastewater treatment, and briefly discusses the adsorption mechanism of biochar to remove pollutants and the modification methods of biochar. Due to the good physical and chemical properties of biochar, including its rough porous structure, it has been widely used to absorb pollutants from water. Magnetic biochar is commonly prepared by combining biochar with magnetic material. The biochar is endowed with the characteristics of the magnetic material, which could effectively solve the problems of difficult recovery and easy loss of adsorbent in water treatment. Magnetic biochar with high carbon content, large specific surface area, magnetic separation, and other excellent properties, has become a hot research topic in recent years. The preparation methods and application properties of magnetic biochar are reviewed. The future research directions of magnetic biochar are put forward to provide directions for further research and application of magnetic biochar materials.

Abstract:The removal of various pollutants from water is necessary due to the increasing requirements for the removal of various pollutants from wastewater and the quality of drinking water. Polymer microspheres are regarded as exemplary adsorbent materials due to their high adsorption efficiency, excellent adsorption performance, and ease of handling. Herein, the advantages and disadvantages of different preparation methods, modifications, applications and the current research status of polymer microspheres are summarized at large. Furthermore, the enhanced performance of modified composite microspheres is emphasized, including adsorption efficiency, thermal stability, and significant improvements in physical and chemical properties. Subsequently, the current applications and potential of polymeric microspheres for wastewater treatment, including the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, and other contaminants are summarized. Finally, future research directions for polymer microspheres are proposed, outlining the challenges and solutions associated with the application of polymer microspheres in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Magnetic chitosan hydrogels are organic-inorganic composite material with the characteristics of both magnetic materials and natural polysaccharides. Due to its biocompatibility, low toxicity and biodegradability, chitosan, a natural polymer has been widely used for preparing magnetic hydrogels. The addition of magnetic nanoparticles to chitosan hydrogels not only improves their mechanical strength, but also endows them with magnetic thermal effects, targeting capabilities, magnetically-sensitive release characteristics, easy separation and recovery, thus enabling them to be used in various applications including drug delivery, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetothermal therapy, and adsorption of heavy metals and dyes. In this review, the physical and chemical crosslinking methods of chitosan hydrogels and the methods for binding magnetic nanoparticles in hydrogel networks are first introduced. Subsequently, the properties of magnetic chitosan hydrogels were summarized including mechanical properties, self-healing, pH responsiveness and properties in magnetic fields. Finally, the potential for further technological and applicative advancements of magnetic chitosan hydrogels is discussed.

Abstract:By dispersing aqueous precipitant in liquid paraffin to prepare a W/O emulsion then adding chitosan (CS) solution, CS microcapsules have been successfully prepared. It is a facile way to prepare polymer microcapsules by using aqueous precipitant or nonsolvent as template, which avoids the removal of template and would free from the necessity to cross-link the microcapsule as usual methods to directly form dense shell. The hollow feature of the obtained materials is revealed. The diameter of the microcapsules ranges from several μ m to over 100 μ m. Magnetic CS microcapsules have been prepared in this way when Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ were mixed with CS to prepare a mixture starting solution. The appearance and microstructure of the composite microcapsules were studied. The results indicate that the formed Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles are embedded in the CS matrix evenly due to strong interaction between the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and the CS molecules. The Fe 3 O 4 content and the magnetic properties of the composite microcapsule were measured. The composite microcapsules were calcined in air at 700°C to prepare pure inorganic hollow microspheres. It is general to prepare hollow polymeric or composite particles by using this method.

Application of chitosan-based materials in wastewater treatment

Abstract:Chitosan, as a natural polysaccharide material, plays a great role in the field of wastewater treatment due to its good biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, and other properties. However, it may have some differences in the processes of adsorption, flocculation, and membrane separation. We comprehensively describe the application effect and mechanism of action of chitosan-based materials on the above three major water treatment processes. In the adsorption process, chitosan-based adsorbents such as hydrogels and chitosan beads are prepared by cross-linking, impregnation, and the introduction of functional groups. These chitosan-based materials exerted efficient removal performance in the adsorption of heavy metals, organic dyes, anionic pollutants, etc., which was attributed to their large specific surface area and abundant functional groups. In the flocculation process, the chitosan-based materials were modified by grafting and modifying their shape, while heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and algae were removed using processes such as chelation and charge neutralization. In the membrane separation process, a number of nanofiltration and microfiltration membranes were created by coating chitosan ions, and physicochemical modification was done for the separation of heavy metal ions and emulsified oil droplets in water to improve the fouling resistance and retention rate of the membrane materials. This paper reviews the application of chitosan-based materials in wastewater treatment and proposes that in-depth studies on their toxicity and reusability should be conducted in the future, with a view to playing a role in areas such as the removal of malodorous water odors.

Abstract:Chitosan nanoparticles with magnetic properties can be potentially used as drug delivery carrier, separation materials. Different from the two-step preparation method of suspension cross-linking, a new method was proposed to in situ prepare magnetic chitosan/Fe3O4 composite nanoparticles with tiny water pools of water-in-oil microemulsion containing chitosan and ferrous salt as microreactors by adding the basic precipitant of NaOH into the microemulsion. The images of transmission electron microscope showed that the cubic-shape magnetic iron oxide particles were encapsulated by the spherical chitosan nanoparticles. The chitosan particle size varied from 10nm to 80nm with different molecular weight of chitosan. The saturated magnetization of pure Fe3O4 nanoparticles was as high as 120emu/g, and the saturated magnetization of composite nanoparticles could reach 11.15emu/g. Meanwhile, the nanoparticles showed the characteristics of superparamagnetism. We may adjust the magnetization of composite particles by changing the weight ratio of chitosan and Fe3O4. After stirring in water for 48h the composite nanoparticles showed the same magnetization as the original ones, indicating high stability of the composite nanoparticles.
Templated Preparation of Porous Magnetic Microspheres and Their Application in Removal of Cationic Dyes from Wastewater.

Abstract:Porous magnetic microspheres with large particle size (350–450μm) were prepared with sulfonated macroporous polydivinylbenzene as a template. The preparation process included ferrous ion exchange and following oxidation by hydrogen peroxide. The results showed that the weight fraction of magnetic nanoparticles exceeded 20wt% in microspheres after the preparation process was repeated three times. X-ray diffraction profiles indicated that the crystalline phase of as-formed magnetic nanoparticles was magnetite (Fe3O4). TEM images revealed rod-like magnetite crystal after the first oxidation cycle, however, the crystal morphologies were transferred into random shape after more oxidation cycles. The applicability of porous magnetic microspheres for removal of cationic dyes from water was also explored. The results exhibited that basic fuchsin and methyl violet could be quickly removed from water with high efficiency. More importantly, the magnetic microspheres could be easily regenerated and repeatedly employed for wastewater treatment. Therefore, a novel methodology was provided for fast removal cationic dyes from wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, novel green in situ quaternary-ammonium-functionalized magnetic chitosan microspheres (IQMCM) were synthesised. The resulting adsorbent was characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, vibrating sample magnetometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The characterization results indicated that the IQMCMs possessed spherical morphology and superior specific thermal stability, magnetic properties, and surface charges. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the adsorption capacities of the IQMCM microspheres to Congo red (CR) was 630.21 mg/g at a dosage of 0.15 g/L, temperature of 333 K, pH of 5.0, and initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and the corresponding removal rate reached 94.53 %. According to the kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamics experiment results, the adsorption of CR dye coincided with a spontaneous endothermic monolayer chemisorption process. After saturated adsorption, this magnetic adsorbent could be rapidly separated from water and reused with little adsorption capacity loss. Overall, these results show that IQMCMs are potentially applicable in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Facile separation from feed liquid is practically important for application of adsorbents, especially for powdery adsorbents. To this challenge, a co-flow microfluidic device was set up in this work to prepare a magnetic chitosan microsphere without using any surfactant or cross-linking agent. In the microfluidic preparation, a chitosan solution containing Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ was cut by the shear force of the flow of the continuous phase of isopentanol to form monodispersed droplets, which were introduced into an ammonia aqueous solution bath to obtain the magnetic microspheres. The microstructure of the magnetic chitosan microsphere was carefully characterized, and was compared with that of the neat chitosan microsphere. Our results indicate that the co-precipitated Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ form in situ magnetite Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles of 4.6 ± 1.7 nm in the matrix of chitosan, endowing the magnetic chitosan microsphere with superparamagnetic property and with 41.3 emu/g saturation magnetization. In addition, the magnetic chitosan microsphere displays only slight decrease in equilibrium adsorption capacity towards Congo red, but reveals much faster adsorption, when compared with the neat chitosan microsphere. We attribute those to the walnut-like wrinkle surface and high zeta potential of the magnetic chitosan microsphere. Therefore, our work provides a method of preparing even-sized magnetic chitosan microsphere, which can adsorb anionic dye quickly and can be facilely removed from liquid phase after adsorption, implying an excellent adsorbent candidate with great potential.

Abstract:Chitosan,in particular with a format of microspheres,has been extensively employed in many applications,that is,treatment of wastewater,chromatographic support,enzyme immobilization,drug delivery,dental application,and hemostasis.In this paper,porous chitosan microspheres were prepared by oil-in-water-in-oil(O/W/O) multiple emulsion crosslinking method.The low toxic and nontoxic solvents,ethyl acetate and castor oil,were applied as a cavity generating agent and a water-insoluble dispersion medium,respectively,to replace the commonly used toxic oil phase such as petroleum ether,toluene and paraffin.The low molecular weight chitosan was obtained by the depolymerization of raw chitosan with hydroperoxide.The viscosity molecular weight(Mw) of the chitosan was investigated by using an Ubbelohde viscosimeter and calculated based on Mark Houwink equation.For preparation of the porous chitosan microspheres,ethyl acetate was first emulsified in chitosan acetic acid solution,and subsequently the emulsion was inversely dispersed in castor oil.The chitosan micro-droplets were solidified and hardened by glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent.All the preparation process was carried out at room temperature.The stirring rate of the emulsion,chitosan concentration,ethyl acetate/chitosan solution ratio,chitosan solution/castor oil ratio,and glutaraldehyde concentration were studied as effective preparation parameters on the size,size distribution and porosity of the chitosan microspheres.The chitosan microspheres were filtrated and rinsed with ethanol and water to remove the organic solvent and the surfactants.Finally,the porous chitosan microspheres were obtained by freeze-drying.The number average diameter of the optimized example of chitosan microspheres was 51.2 μm.The porous structures distributed in the chitosan microspheres were clearly observed by the SEM.

Abstract:Magnetic separation is based on the exertion of a magnetic field to selectively collect the magnetic responsive materials. With the development of nanotechnology, magnetic separations based on nanomaterials have found various applications largely benefited from the size effect and synthetic advancement in their preparation. In this review the synthetic methods for the preparation of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles including co-precipitation, hydrothermal and solvothermal synthesis, microemulsion, and sonochemical hydrolysis are discussed. Problems related to the nanoparticle preparation such as broad size distribution, easy aggregation and difficulties in surface functionalization are summarized and directions for improvement are pointed out. Furthermore, a summary on the application of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment is given including heavy metal ions removal, residue pesticide determination and removal, absorption of toxic water soluble molecules, and oily water treatment, and their new application potential is addressed specifically as a novel draw agent for forward osmosis. Finally, the perspectives and problems related to the application of iron oxide nanoparticles in water treatment are given. Abstract:A modified method to prepare chitosan–poly(acrylic acid)(CS–PAA) polymer magnetic microspheres was reported in this paper. First, via self-assembly of positively charged CS and negatively charged Fe3O4 nanoparticles, magnetic CS cores with a large amount of Fe3O4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared. Subsequently, the AA monomers were polymerized on the magetic CS cores based on the reaction system of water-soluble polymer–monomer pairs. These polymer magnetic microspheres had a high Fe3O4 loading content, and showed unique pH-dependent behaviors on the size and zeta potential. From the magnetometer measurements data, the CS–PAA polymer magnetic microspheres also had superparamagnetic property as well as fast magnetic response. A continuous release of the entrapped ammonium glycyrrhizinate in such polymer magnetic microspheres occurred, which confirmed the potential applications of these microspheres for the targeted delivery of drugs.

Abstract:Efficient adsorption and separation of organic dyes in the wastewater is highly desirable for environmental protection. A facile synthesis of magnetic bio-based chitosan (CS) microspheres grafted with sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPSS) via electron beam radiation is described. The obtained microspheres were characterized by FTIR, SEM, TG and VSM, which demonstrated millimetric magnetic CS-g-SPSS microspheres were obtained with enhanced thermal stability. Experimental parameters such as absorbed dosage, mass ratio, initial pH, initial concentration and contact time for the adsorption were thoroughly investigated. To investigate the adsorption rate and recyclability, evaluation of adsorption kinetic model and adsorption/desorption experiment were conducted.

Abstract:The magnetic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by a simple one-step in situ co-precipitation method and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The sorption performance of the nanoparticles for removing Cu(II) from aqueous solution was investigated. The experimental results showed that the particles were super-paramagnetic, with the saturation magnetization of about 36emu/g and the size was in the range of 8–40nm. The EDS images confirmed the presence of Cu(II) on the surface of magnetic chitosan nanoparticles. The maximum sorption capacity was calculated to be 35.5mg/g using the Langmuir isotherm model. The mechanism of Cu(II) sorption onto the magnetic chitosan nanoparticles was tentatively proposed.
Preparation of Chitosan/Poly(Acrylic Acid) Magnetic Composite Microspheres and Applications in the Removal of Copper(Ii) Ions from Aqueous Solutions

Abstract:In this current work, the magnetic composite microspheres (MCM), consisting of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) blended chitosan (CS), were prepared successfully by a simple method, co-precipitation of the compounds in alkaline solution. SEM, FTIR and TG techniques have been applied to investigate the structures of the MCM materials. The vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM) measurement illustrated a paramagnetic property as well as a fast magnetic response, which indicated the significant separability of the MCM in the aqueous suspensions. Then, the MCM materials were employed as absorbents for removal of copper(II) (Cu(II)) ions from aqueous solutions. The fundamental adsorption behaviors of MCM were studied also. Experimental results revealed that the CS/PAA-MCM had greater adsorption capacity than CS-MCM, and PAA played an important role for the adsorption of Cu(II) ions. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms were all well described by the Langmuir model, while the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order equation. Furthermore, the adsorbent could be easily regenerated at lower pH and reused almost without any loss of adsorption capacity. On the contrary, the Cu(II) ions loaded CS-MCM and CS/PAA-MCM were stable enough at pH higher than 4.0, and both exhibited efficient phosphate removal with maximal uptakes around 63.0 and 108.0mgPg−1, respectively.
