Abstract:Fibrous brucite has very unique structure and physical properties. Brucite fibers were exfoliated into single nanofibers by using dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (AOT) as a dispersant through mechanical agitation and ultrasonic dispersion; and then, the nanofibers were modified by stearic acid and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (γ-APS) compound modification agent. The nanofibers were characterized by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal gravimetric analysis. It is found that AOT has good effect on the dispersion. The single fiber has a consistent morphology, and fibrous brucite is dispersed and modified without destroying the crystal structure. Infrared and thermal analysis shows that the surface modification of fibrous brucite is achieved by forming chemical bonds between the coupling agent and magnesium hydroxide.
Effect of brucite fibers and early strength agent on cement stabilized macadam in Alpine regions

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">This paper aims to study the mechanical performance and durability properties of the brucite fiber reinforced cement stabilized base at the low-temperature condition. Five type samples with different fiber content were prepared, and the related mechanical performance and durability properties were examined. The test results indicated that the added brucite fiber could enhance both the mechanical and durability performance of the cement stabilized base. Specifically, it was found that the unconfined compressive/splitting tensile strength can reach at 3-day age and 7-day age could reach 41%/37% and 67%/67% respectively compared to the results at 28-day age. Furthermore, the added brucite fiber can reduce the drying shrinkage of the cementitious material and also improve its resistance to frost damage. The X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy tests were further conducted to examine the improvement mechanism of the brucite fiber reinforcement. It is found that the hydration degree of cement paste was enhanced with the added brucite fiber. The designed brucite fiber cement stabilized sample in this study is suitable for pavement construction in alpine regions.</p>
Brucite Modified Epoxy Mortar Binders: Flame Retardancy, Thermal and Mechanical Characterization

Abstract:Polymer mortar with excellent mechanical strength and durability has been widely used in road pavement and other construction industry. In this study, two kinds of brucites, synthetic and natural brucites were incorporated in the epoxy mortar binders as flame retardants. The components and morphology of the two kinds of brucites were investigated. The flame retardancy of brucite-modified epoxy mortar binders was evaluated by the horizontal burning and limiting oxygen index tests. The influence of flame retardants on the rotational viscosity, the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy mortar binders was determined by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and universal test machine. Furthermore, the morphology of flame retarded-epoxy mortar binders was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The addition of brucites significantly improved the flame retardancy, thermal stability and tensile strength of epoxy mortar binders. Especially in the case of the addition of 20 wt% synthetic brucites in epoxy mortar binders, from FH-3 to FH-1 reduction in the horizontal burning classification, 5.5% improvement in limiting oxygen index, 15% increment in tensile strength were obtained. Abstract:Design and fabrication of high-strength and low-thermal-conducting cement-based materials are urgently needed for developing low-energy-consuming buildings. Here glass bead (GB) and ground expanded perlite (EP) particles were respectively used as the macro and micro insulating fillers to synthesize thermally insulating cement-based composites (C-GB-EP). The material structures, mechanical and thermal properties of the C-GB-EP composites were investigated by comprehensive experimental tests. Results indicate that both fillers have no obvious influences on cement hydration, but accelerate the carbonation of calcium hydroxide due to the loosely compacted microstructures. The C-GB-EP composites show complex and multi-scaled material structures dominated by the interactions between the fillers and matrices in different scales. The C-GB-EP composites retain their mechanical properties in the limited EP contents. The C-GB-EP composites show relatively low thermal conductivities and very high thermal-resistant abilities with respect to compressive strength and density. A multi-scale micromechanical model was proposed to predict the effective thermal conductivity of the composites. Inclusion shapes play an important role on depressing the thermal conductivity of composites. Incorporation of penny-shaped insulating inclusions in cement matrix may be an appropriate and effective way to design new types of thermally insulating cement-based composites.

Abstract:Steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cement-based composites (SBFRCC) have excellent mechanical properties at ambient temperature. Conducting research on the behavior of SBFRCC at high temperatures is beneficial for applications in structures which may be exposed to fires. In this study, the physical properties of fibers and mechanical properties of SBFRCC exposed to high temperatures were assessed through appearance, mass loss, and compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength tests. The deterioration mechanism was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous thermal analysis (STA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that the color and mass of steel and basalt fiber change significantly with temperature. The addition of steel fiber and basalt fiber can improve residual flexural strength and splitting tensile strength. High basalt fiber content is harmful for compressive strength. The compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength of SBFRCC essentially decreases with temperature. Models were established to describe the quantitative relationship be-tween relative strength and fiber content, temperature. The addition of steel fiber and basalt fiber can effectively inhibit cracks generation and propagation by multi-stage cracking resistance. High temperature deterioration of hybrid fibers can only reduce the reinforcement, but steel fiber and basalt fiber can still play a role in bridging cracks at 900C.

Abstract:The excellent performance of steel and basalt fiber at room and high temperatures makes steel-basalt hybrid fibers reinforced cementitious composites (SBFRCC) a promising solution for engineering structures with fire risk. In this study, the morphology, explosive spalling behavior, flexural, compressive and splitting tensile strength, and uniaxial tensile properties of SBFRCC with different substitution rates of fly ash after exposure to high temperatures were studied. In addition, the effects of high temperature on the microstructures of SBFRCC were investigated by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray computed tomography (XCT) tests. The results show that the incorporation of steel fiber and basalt fiber can significantly improve the explosive spalling behavior, flexural and splitting tensile strength. After exposure to high temperatures, increasing the substitution rate of fly ash properly can reduce the rate of strength degradation to some extent, but will reduce the compressive strength and increase the explosive spalling rates. The microstructures of SBFRCC become loose and the porosities of SBFRCC increase under the combined effect of the decomposition of hydration products, the melting of fly ash, and the deterioration of steel fiber and basalt fiber.

Abstract:Basalt fiber, as a natural silicate fiber, has excellent engineering performance in high and low temperature resistance, high fracture strength, toughness, shear and elastic modulus in nature. Shotcrete was widely used in tunnel lining, slope support, coal mine roadway and other projects. With the continuous development of shotcrete technology, scholars found that adding fiber to shotcrete would greatly improve the performance of shotcrete. Compared with traditional plain shotcrete and steel fiber shotcrete, shotcrete incorporated with basalt fiber can dramatically improve the bending resistance, toughness and durability, therefore effectively improving the engineering performance of concrete structure, such as lining support. This paper summarized and discussed the mechanical properties, early age performance, durability and practical applications of basalt fiber reinforced concrete with a focus on basalt fiber shotcrete (BFSC). Meanwhile, it focused on the engineering performance improvement and enhancement mechanisms of basalt fiber as a mineral admixture into shotcrete, and assessed the deficiencies existing in the current research. Eventually, the suggestions and prospects for future BFSC related research were proposed.

Abstract:Basalt fibers (BFs) with different lengths were mixed into a new phosphogypsum-based composite (PGC) with different proportions to prepare the BF-reinforced phosphogypsum-based composites (BFRPGCs). In this study, the single factor test and two-factor three-factorial response surface methodology (RSM) test were designed. Experimental tests were conducted to determine the mechanical properties, porosity and water resistance of BFRPGCs and the failure mode and micro-morphology of the composites. The influence mechanisms of BFs’ length, dosage and their interaction on various properties of PGCs were discussed. The results revealed that BFs with optimal dosage and length significantly enhanced the strength and toughness of the mixtures, and reduced the porosity and water absorption. The fiber dosage exhibited more significant effect on these performances of PGCs than fiber length, and the significance of their interaction varied with the tested properties. Additionally, RSM models were utilized to predict the optimal parameters to realize the multi-objective optimization of BFRPGCs and the results of this multi-objective optimization were well accordant with values from the validation experiments. The research results can provide a new idea to investigate of fiber modified gypsum-based composites for the wide applications of the new PGCs.

Abstract:Abstract Basalt fiber (BF) is a kind of high-performance fiber rising rapidly in recent years. BF is typically used in the field of structure engineering because of its high strength and high modulus. The preparation of BF-based composites first requires surface modification of BF to improve the interfacial bonding between BF and the resin matrix. With the continuous deepening of the research on BF surface modification, researchers have found that special surface modification can obtain BF-based functionalized composites, and this field has received extensive attention in recent years. In this article, research work on BF-based functional composites in recent years are summarized and reviewed from the aspects of electromagnetic shielding, water treatment, catalytic function and fire insulation. Finally, this article summarizes the BF surface modification methods, and proposes the development trends and direction of BF-based functional composites.

Abstract:Research on three-dimensional, randomly distributed BFRC in China is analyzed and summarized in relative depth in this study. The results indicate that the effect of the fiber component and alkali corrosion temperature on the alkali resistance of BF is significant; the BF has little effect on the compressive strength of the concrete; the tensile and flexural strengths of the composites significantly increase compared with plain concrete, and the fiber content has a significant effect on the strength. In light of some problems in the current research, six possible research topics are suggested: (1) investigating the alkali resistance of the BF under dynamic temperatures, lower alkali concentrations, and longer alkali corrosion times; (2) improving the alkali resistance of the BF by increasing its hydrophobicity; (3) determining the optimal fiber distribution orientation of the BF with various characteristic parameters; (4) establishing the calculation formulas for the critical content and critical aspect ratio of various types of BF; (5) determining the optimal mixture ratio of two or more fibers in the FRC while studying the complementary mechanisms between each other; and (6) improving the dispersion of the BF and the BF/matrix interfacial properties.

Abstract:A low-carbon composite termed basalt fiber (BF)-biobased-basic magnesium sulfate cement (BMSC) is proposed. It utilizes recycled wood fiber (RWF) and BF as lightweight fillers and reinforcements. The microscopic mechanism of the effect of RWF and BF on the fluidity of BMSC paste and the mechanical properties of the hardened samples is discussed. The microstructure, physical phase analysis and image identification semi-quantification demonstrated that RWF enhances the development of the 5·1·7 phase. After further incorporation of BF, the fluidity and dispersion of the paste then decrease. However, the magnesium cement matrix–RWF–BF system form in the BMSC turns the single-fiber reinforcement into a composite reinforcement. It improves the mechanical properties of the composite, especially the flexural strength, even though the addition of RWF made the BMSC composite less dense. In addition, the biobased-BMSC is influenced by the coupling-competition mechanism, which is reflected by the pore structure and mechanical properties. It indicates that the low-carbon composite has the potential for carbon sequestration and the development of environmentally friendly additives for improving the performance of BMSC.

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the macro-micro-meso-mechanical properties of basalt fiber (BF)-reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (BFRAC). Firstly, the effects of BF with different contents and lengths on the mechanical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) at different ages were analyzed. In addition, the distribution of BF, bond between BF and matrix, failure form of BF, and element composition of the fiber interface transition zone were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Finally, the numerical simulation of cubic compression and splitting tensile tests of RAC specimens were carried out, and the stress–strain curve and failure morphology of RAC under static loading was studied. The results show that BF content is the main factor affecting the mechanical properties of concrete within the range of test fiber content (0.1%–0.3%), and the optimal content of BF is 0.2%. The length of BF has little effect on the compressive properties of RAC, but the increase of BF length can improve the splitting tensile and flexural properties of RAC. Through SEM-EDS, the toughening and cracking resistance mechanisms of the BF are obtained. In the meso-simulation, the numerical simulation results are in high agreement with the experimental phenomenon, and this method provides an effective technical method for the prediction and establishment of RAC failure model. In summary, the research results can be used as reference for the establishment of the RAC mechanical model, performance research, and practical engineering application in the future.

Research Status and Outlook on High Temperature Performance of Fiber Concrete

Abstract:Fiber concrete is a novel composite material that has widespread use in the construction industry. However, high-temperature environments can cause severe damage to concrete structures. Therefore, it is essential to study the refractory properties and microscopic changes of fiber concrete under such conditions. This paper reviews the current research status of steel fiber concrete, polypropylene fiber concrete, and hybrid fiber concrete, which are commonly used in practical engineering, and summarizes their respective roles in concrete by combining theory and practice. The review also looks forward to future research directions and development trends to provide a reference for related research. Studies have demonstrated that adding a suitable amount of fibers can significantly enhance the high-temperature performance of concrete. However, different fiber types have varying effects on concrete. The high-temperature performance of fiber concrete is also influenced by various factors, including concrete mix ratio, fiber type, and admixture. Future research should focus on investigating the mechanism and microscopic changes in the high-temperature performance of fiber concrete, developing new fiber materials, optimizing concrete mixing ratios, and exploring the application of fiber concrete in practical engineering.
Effect of oleic acid on improving flame retardancy of brucite in low‐density polyethylene composite

Abstract:Abstract Brucite was modified with oleic acid (OA) and the effect of OA on flame retardancy of brucite in low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) composites was investigated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and particle size analysis were used to examine the structural changes of the OA modified brucite. Flammability of the LDPE/brucite composites with different OA content was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 test, and microscale combustion calorimetry. The results showed that when brucite was modified with OA, magnesium oleate was formed on the brucite surface. The brucite particle size and the relative intensity of the (101) diffraction peak of brucite decreased. When the content of OA and brucite in the composite were 6 and 40 phr respectively, the prepared LDPE composite displayed better flame retardancy than the corresponding OA free LDPE composite: the LOI value increased from 22.2% to 24.9%, and the peak heat release rate decreased from 678 to 546 kW/m 2 . The influence of OA on the improvement of flame retardancy of brucite in LDPE/brucite composite was due to the efficient dispersion of brucite in LDPE matrix and the structural changes of brucite, caused by the reaction of OA with brucite.

Abstract:High performance lightweight aggregate concrete has become a popular topic for the development of green concrete due to the incorporation of industrial waste, e.g., fly ash and boiler slag for aggregate production. However, its brittleness has gradually emerged as an issue with the increasing of strength. To address this concern, the authors in this paper investigated the influence of bamboo fiber on the compressive and splitting tensile strengths of high performance lightweight aggregate concrete at different fiber volume contents and lengths. Moreover, three-point bending test equipped with acoustic emission and digital image correlation on notched beams was also carried out, to evaluate the fracture toughness of bamboo fiber reinforced high performance lightweight aggregate concrete. Finally, the softening constitutive models at different fiber volume contents and lengths were obtained in the present study.

Abstract:Natural fiber-reinforced geopolymer (GP) is gaining popularity in the construction and building materials industries due to its natural renewability, accessibility, low cost, and excellent mechanical properties. In light of this, an investigation was conducted on the effect of bamboo fiber (BF) loading and fiber pretreatment methods on final composites. Mechanical tests showed that compared to pure GP, the compressive strength and flexural strength of GP composites were slightly negatively affected by the addition of either untreated or alkali-treated BFs. However, the loading of KH550 significantly improved the mechanical properties of GP with the addition of alkali-treated BFs more than untreated BFs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis illustrated that the employment of KH550 effectively improved the interfacial performance between the BF and GP matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests demonstrated the successful synthesis of GP and that the addition of KH550 had little effect on the main crystal structure and chemical composition of GP. This study provides a new method of bamboo fiber preparation and the feasibility of applying it to reinforce GP.

Mechanical Properties under Compression and Microscopy Analysis of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete

Abstract:In this study, the basalt fiber content (0%, 0.075%, and 0.15%) and replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate (0%, 50%, and 100%) were used as parameters, and the compressive strength of 15 cubes and 15 prisms was analyzed. The failure morphology of the specimens was characterized, and the cubic compressive strength, axial compressive strength, elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, and other mechanical property indices of the specimens were measured. Upon increasing the replacement ratio, the degree of damage of the specimens gradually increased, whereas the cubic compressive strength, axial compressive strength, and elastic modulus gradually decreased. As the replacement ratio was increased from 50% to 100%, the cubic compressive strength and elastic modulus were noted to decrease the most by about 9.07% and 9.87%, respectively. On the other hand, the Poisson's ratio first decreased, followed by an increase. Upon increasing the fiber content, the degree of damage of the specimens was gradually reduced, whereas the cubic compressive strength, axial compressive strength, and elastic modulus gradually increased. As the fiber content increased from 0.075% to 0.15%, the axial compressive strength and elastic modulus increased the most by about 6.65% and 10.19%, respectively. On the other hand, the Poisson's ratio gradually decreased. Based on the test data, the functional relationships between the strength indices and different variables, as well as the conversion value of each strength index and different variables were established; after comparison and verification, the formula calculation results were found to be in good agreement with the test results. The microstructural changes in the basalt fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the changes in the mechanical properties of the basalt fiber reinforced recycled aggregate concrete as well as the mechanism of fiber modification and reinforcement were explained from a micro perspective.

Abstract:Abstract A new-type composite wall panel was designed using the high-performance fiber reinforced cement-based composite and foam concrete, and then their mechanical properties, phase composition and microstructure were investigated. The results show that the composite wall panel is of superior overall mechanical properties, which are ascribed to the high-performance fiber reinforced cement-based composite, where the longitudinal compressive strength, the main phase compositions of the high-performance fiber reinforced cement-based composite are CaCO3, Ca (OH)2, ettringite and C-S-H.
Influence of Basalt Fiber on the Physical and Mechanical Properties of Aerated Ceramsite Concrete

Abstract:In order to improve the technical performance of Aerated Ceramsite Concrete (ACC) so that it could better meet the requirements of lightweight wallboards for prefabricated buildings, this study mixed 0%, 0.05%, 0.10%, 0.15% and 0.20% of the Basalt Fiber (BF) by volume ratio into the ACC of 100mm-thickness LC15 lightweight wallboards, and conducted experiments to test the apparent density, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength on the 7d, 14d, and 28d of the experiment; then, the microstructure and failure forms of the BF-improved ACC material were observed and analyzed, and the results showed that adding BF can effectively improve the physical and mechanical properties of ACC, and the optimal BF content in the ACC of lightweight wallboards is 0.10%-0.15%.

Abstract:Numerous scientists have studied basalt fiber (BF) reinforced concrete and found encouraging results. However, information is scattered, and compressive assessment is yet necessary to collect the data from prior research on BF, present research advancement, and future research guidelines of BF reinforced concrete. Furthermore, mostly research focus to review on strength and durability aspects of BF reinforced concrete while no researched focus on thermal properties, microstructure analysis and environmental benefits of BF reinforced concrete. Therefore, the primary focuses of this paper are BF treatment, BF reinforced concrete performance at high temperatures, microstructure analysis, environmental advantages, and application in civil engineering. Results show that BF-reinforced concrete performs much better than traditional concrete at high temperatures. Additionally, the use of BF enhanced the heat conductivity of concrete. BF addition to concrete seems to have reduced interfacial transition zone (ITZ) fractures, according to a microstructure study. When opposed to traditional steel fibers, BFs may be thought as reinforcements that are less harmful to the environment. The study also highlights the significance of BFs in the building industry. The assessment also identified research gap research for further studies.
