Abstract:A facile solvothermal hydrazine reduction route was designed for the synthesis of shape-controlled one-dimensional (ID) nickel wires in the presence of magnetic fields. The reaction conditions involved were studied systematically to select the optimal reaction parameters to reveal the effects of weak magnetic fields on the formation and properties of nickel nanostructures. The magnetic-field-dependent formation of 11) nickel wires indicated that the reduction of nickel ions with concentration less than 0.21 m preferentially occurs along the magnetic line of force, leading to the formation of uniform 1D wires, whereas higher concentrations could lead to quick reaction in the whole system and formation of isolated particles coexisting with wires composed of microspheres formed along the magnetic line of force. The improved magnetic proper-ties of the sample formed in a magnetic field relative to those of samples formed without an applied field may be due to variation of the magnetic domain structure in the 11) nickel wires. Moreover, it was found that microwave absorption of a ID nickel wire/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) composite at 8.5-12.5 GHz was evidently enhanced relative to that of a nickel microsphere/PMMA composite, which indicates that the anisotropic wires are not simply an assembly of particles, but that the magnetic domain structures in wires has been changed by the applied field. Synthesis and One-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Acicular Nickel Nanocrystallites under Magnetic Fields

Abstract:Polycrystalline nickel wires with an average length of 10 mum and diameter of about 200 nm were prepared at 70 degreesC by a hydrothermal process with a 0.25 T magnetic field applied. Studies show that the magnetic field induced one-dimensional assembly of acicular Ni nanocrystallites with dimensions of 200 nm in length and 10-30 nm in diameter, leading to the formation of the polycrystalline nickel wires. Magnetic measurements show saturation magnetization (Ms) of the sample prepared in a 0.25 T external magnetic field is higher than that of the sample synthesized without an external magnetic field applied. It is suggested that the one-dimensional self-assembly of acicular nickel nanocrystallites with their magnetic easy axes [111] aligned along the magnetic line of force results in the improvement of the magnetic properties.

Abstract:Nickel nanowires with large aspect ratio of up to 300 have been prepared by a hydrazine hydrate reduction method under applied magnetic field. The diameter of nickel nanowires is about 200 nm and length up to 60 μm. The role of magnetic field on the growth of magnetic nanowires is discussed and a magnetic nanowire growth mechanism has been proposed. Nickel ions are firstly reduced to nickel atoms by hydrazine hydrates in a strong alkaline solution and grow into tiny spherical nanoparticles. Then, these magnetic particles will align under a magnetic force and form linear chains. Furthermore, the as-formed chains can enhance the local magnetic field and attract other magnetic particles nearby, resulting finally as linear nanowires. The formation and the size of nanowires depend strongly on the magnitude of applied magnetic field.

Abstract:An experimental study of the magnetic domains of nickel wires prepared under magnetic fields was carried out by using magnetic force microscopy. Nickel wires with a diameter of approximately 250 nm had a single-domain structure, while unique core-shell cylindrical domain was found in 2-mu m-diameter wires. It is suggested that this novel domain structure was formed because of the presence of a magnetic field during the formation of wires and strongly depended on the diameter of the wires.

Abstract:Small size Ni–Mn–Ga microwires have numerous potential applications in micro-sensors and actuators. In this paper, polycrystalline Ni–Mn–Ga microwires with a diameter of 35–80 μm and length of 3–20 cm were fabricated using a melt-extraction technique. The microstructural evolution of the microwires during the process was evaluated in detail. Such melt-extracted microwires have a semicircular cross-section with a flattened side giving an arc-chord length ratio varying from 1.8 to 3.6. Nucleation occurred on the flattened side that was in contact with the copper wheel, with columnar grains growing towards the semicircular surface. Fine equiaxed grains (0.4–2 μm) were observed at the nucleation sites. With an increase in the copper wheel temperature, two symmetric nucleation sites may appear on the flattened surface, accompanied by a decrease in the arc-chord length ratio. Unique grain growth behavior was observed along the radial direction with columnar grains initially growing along the crystal <001> direction with a fan-like texture and then gradually evolving into <001> direction in perpendicular to the flattened surface in the late stage of crystallization. Such grain structure and texture may favor the magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) in Ni–Mn–Ga microwires.

Abstract:One-dimensional Ni nanostructures were synthesized via a hydrazine reduction route under external magnetic fields. The mixture of de-ionized water and ethanol was used as the reaction solvent and hydrazine hydrate as reducing agents. The morphology and properties of Ni nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). It was found that the magnetic field strength, concentration of Ni ions, reaction time and temperature as well as pH values played key roles on formation, microstructures and magnetic properties of Ni nanowires. The optimal wires have diameter of ∼200 nm and length up to ∼200 μm. And their coercivity is ∼260 Oe, which is much larger than the commercial Ni powders of 31 Oe. This work presents a simple, low-cost, environment-friendly and large-scale production approach to fabricate one-dimensional magnetic materials. The resulting materials may have potential applications in conductive filters, magnetic sensors and catalytic agents.

Abstract:In single-crystalline Ni-Mn-Ga alloys, high reversible strain (∼10%) induced by an external magnetic field due to twin variants reorientation can be achieved. However, twin boundary motion is hindered by grain boundaries in polycrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga alloys, resulting in a low strain output. In this work, oligocrystalline Ni-Mn-Ga microwires with near bamboo-like grain structure (1-3 grains across the wire diameter of 30-80μm) were prepared by melt-extraction technique and subsequent annealing treatment. Single twin variant, with twin lamella thickness up to 6μm, spans across the entire diameter of the microwire. The oligocrystalline microwires are of ferromagnetic nature at ambient temperature. Twining boundary motion was demonstrated by tensile test performed on a Q800 DMA where different twining stresses corresponding to various grain orientations in a single microwire were detected. A maximum strain of ∼1.57% was obtained and related to the orientation of a subset grains. The martensite twin variant orientations after tensile test were observed using a SEM.

Abstract:Nanoscale magnetic materials have been receiving increasing interest for their potential applications. One-dimensional magnetic particles chain of polycrystalline nickel was prepared by a simple template-free method under magnetic field. Based on solution reduction reaction of Ni2+, metallic nickel was deposited and synchronously self-assembled into chains under magnetic field. The results show that the chain of polycrystalline nickel was several micrometer in length and several hundreds nanometer in diameter. VSM measurements indicate the magnetic properties of chains formed can be modulated by the reaction time and the solution concentration. It is suggested that the magnetic field be an effective and tunable way to the fabrication one-dimensional chains of magnetic materials.

Abstract:Nickel nanowires were prepared by a template free method combined with chemical reduction and magnetic field. The application of an external magnetic Held resulted in the formation of self-aligned metallic nickel nanowires of about 50 nm in diameter. Nickel particles were prepared in the absence of a magnetic field to better illustrate the structure directing role of the magnetic field. Physical properties of the nickel nanochains were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) methods. Formation of Crystalline Nickel Fibers by Chemical Reduction in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

Abstract:It was demonstrated that crystalline nickel fibers could be synthesized by a chemical method under the influence of magnetic field. The fibers would grow from a few nucleation points in the direction of magnetic field. We believed that ultra-fine nickel powders were first produced by chemical reduction. Kinetic measurements indicated that there was an induction period prior to the precipitation process. These ultra-fine powders were then magnetized and grew into fibers along the direction of magnetic field. The diameters of these fibers were strongly affected by the starting pH of the precursor solution, varying from 50 μm to around 1μm when pH was changed from 11.5 to 14.5. On the other hand, when the magnetic field was above 50 Oe (Oersted), we could always obtain fiber with lengths over 5 cm. Both electrical and magnetic properties were also reported for these Ni fibers.

Abstract:NixZn1-x alloy nanowires were successfully prepared by the templated electrodeposition technique. The morphology and the microstructures of as-deposited nanowires were examined by scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscope and electron diffraction. It is demonstrated that the content of magnetic element Ni in the nanowires can be easily adjusted by changing the ingredients of the electrolyte, the deposited current density and the deposited voltage, which is critical to tune the magnetic property of the nanowires. X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction analysis indicate that the NixZn1-x nanowires exhibit different structures with the variation in the quantity of nickel in the nanowires. It is expected that these heterogeneous alloy nanowires will have a potential application in nanoscale giant-magnetoresistance devices.

Abstract:Nickel three-dimensional (3D) urchin-like particles and one-dimensional (1D) chainlike nanowires are selectively synthesized by an in situ magnetic-field-directed solution-phase method at ambient conditions. The results indicate that the morphology of the products strongly depends on the external magnetic-field distribution. The urchin-like particle is composed of a spheric core connected by spear-shaped branches under the nonuniform magnetic field, while the chainlike nanowire is formed through 1D alignment of spheres with the aid of parallel magnetic-field distribution during the reaction. The branch lengths and the whole size of the urchin-like particles can be tailored by adjusting the pH value and reaction temperature, respectively. The magnetic properties of the urchin-like particles are studied in detail as well and the results reveal that the saturated magnetization and coercivity are strongly related to the corresponding microstructure. This work provides a simple and effective strategy to modulate the morphology of the magnetic materials through the external magnetic-field force.
Ni/Ni3C Core-Shell Nanochains and Its Magnetic Properties: One-Step Synthesis at low temperature

Abstract:One-dimensional Ni/Ni3C core-shell nanoball chains with an average diameter by around 30 nm were synthesized by means of a mild chemical solution method using a soft template of trioctylphosphineoxide (TOPO). It was revealed that the uniform Ni nanochains were capped with Ni3C thin shells by about 1 to 4 nm in thickness and each Ni core consists of polygrains. The coercivity of the core-shell nanochains is much enhanced (600 Oe at 5 K) and comparable with single Ni nanowires due to the one-dimensional shape anisotropy. Deriving from the distinctive structure of Ni core and Ni3C shell, this architecture may possess a possible bi-functionality. This unique architecture is also useful for the study on the magnetization reversal mechanism of one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure.

Abstract:A series of highly uniform one-dimensional Ni nanochains, with diameters ranging from 20 to 200 nm, have been synthesized by a facile, template-free, wet chemical method at diverse temperature and magnetic field. Our results indicate that the crystallite size, diameter and length of the prepared nanochains depend critically on the reaction temperature. The characteristic thermodynamic cohesive energies, Delta E-D and Delta E-L, are obtained for the formation of the Ni nanochains. In addition, the chain length also depends on the applied field because of the Zeeman energy of the magnetic Ni nanoparticles. For the morphology control, an external field is required in order to obtain axially aligned rather than dendritic nanochains. The size-dependent magnetic properties are studied systematically. The saturation magnetization is shown to reduce inversely with the chain diameter, attributable to a core-shell structure. The thickness of the shell which encloses the ferromagnetic Ni core is determined to be about 2.3-3.4 nm.

Abstract:Magnetic nanowires (NWs) are ideal materials for the fabrication of various multifunctional nanostructures which can be manipulated by an external magnetic field. Highly crystalline and textured nanowires of nickel (Ni NWs) and cobalt (Co NWs) with high aspect ratio (∼330) and high coercivity have been synthesized by electrodeposition using nickel sulphate hexahydrate (NiSO4·6H2O) and cobalt sulphate heptahydrate (CoSO4·7H2O) respectively on nanoporous alumina membranes. They exhibit a preferential growth along 〈110〉. A general mobility assisted growth mechanism for the formation of Ni and Co NWs is proposed. The role of the hydration layer on the resulting one-dimensional geometry in the case of potentiostatic electrodeposition is verified. A very high interwire interaction resulting from magnetostatic dipolar interactions between the nanowires is observed. An unusual low-temperature magnetisation switching for field parallel to the wire axis is evident from the peculiar high field M(T) curve.

Abstract:One-dimensional magnetic Ni-Co alloy microwires with different microstructures and differently shaped building blocks including spherical particles, multilayer stacked alloy plates, and alloy flowers, have been synthesized by an external magnetic field-assisted solvothermal reaction of mixtures of cobalt(II) chloride and nickel(II) chloride in 1, 2-propanediol with different NaOH concentrations. By adjusting the experimental parameters, such as precursor concentration and Ni/Co ratio, Ni-Co alloy chains with uniform diameters in the range 500 nm to 1.3 μm and lengths ranging from several micrometers to hundreds of micrometers can be obtained. A mechanism of formation of the one-dimensional assemblies of magnetic Ni-Co microparticles in a weak external magnetic field is proposed.

Abstract:Polycrystalline spiky Ni nanowires (Ni NWs) with high yield and high aspect ratio have been synthesized using a controlled one-step hydrothermal method in the presence of an external magnetic field. The morphological investigations reveal the spiky growth of the Ni NWs with thorns of 500 nm to 800 nm in length on the surface. This hierarchical structure growth pattern observed on the surface involved plane orientation growth during the nucleation in the presence of an external magnetic field. The best aspect of this methodology is the control of the morphological and growth orientation by tuning the process parameters such as magnetic field, temperature and concentration of reducing agent. The magnetic measurement shows the highest saturation magnetisation value of 61.3 emu g(-1) at room temperature that makes its potential for micro/nano magnetic devices.

Abstract:The present work reports a facile and rapid microwave-assisted route to synthesize nickel nanowires with a necklace-like morphology and lengths up to several hundreds of microns. The wires consist of many crystallites with an average size of 25 ± 2 nm. The synthesis does not use templates or magnetic fields and needs only 6 min, which is more than 480 times faster than that needed for Ni wires prepared at 180 °C using conventional heating. Nickel nanostructures with various morphologies including spheres, chains and irregular particles with porous surfaces can also be obtained by adjusting reaction parameters. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is found to be vital for the formation of the one-dimensional chains and a high concentration of PVP smoothes their surfaces to result in the appearance of wires. This rapid one-pot procedure combines the formation of nanoparticles, their oriented assembly into chains, and the subsequent shaping of wires. The Ni nanostructures show variable magnetic properties. The prepared nickel wires have a high mechanical stability and exhibit much higher coercivity than bulk nickel, Ni nanoparticles and their aggregations, which promise potential applications in micromechanical sensors, memory devices and other fields.
