Immigrants came as either outlaws, soldiers, or as appointed government officials. There were a lot of residential areas within the territory of Gansu. The immigrant movement had a great impact on Gansu in Qin Dynasty.

Abstract:This paper sets up 5 Census database in 1953,1964,1983,1990,2000 based on GIS. The population gravity centers of main nationalities were calculated using gravity model in 1953, 1964,1983,1990,2000. Then, the characteristics and the influence factors of the moving of the minority population are analyzed. Study results show that population gravity center move to capitals are obvious. The move velocities of minorities' population gravity centers are slowdown, while the move velocities of HAN is Accelerated. Movement distances of east-west direction are generally greater than that of the north-south direction. The population gravity center are continued moving to southeast all the while. Finally, the factors of Natural conditions, Economic development, Policies as the mainly reasons were discussed.

Abstract:In Sixteen Countries and Northern Dynasty particularly the latter,the high frequent and large scope inner floating population was implemented by dominators of non-Chinese nationalities charactered in forced migration with the goal of resorting to arms and cultivating.Such emigrating status plus with other complex factors,eventuated in the long-term,all-pervading and far-ranging Qiao Zhou Jun Xian(侨州郡县)set during Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasty.As in the frontier of Sixteen Countries and Northern Dynasty,the setting was not in such long-term,all-pervading and far-ranging.In the most Qiao Zhou Jun Xian in Sixteen Countries and Northern Dynasty particularly the latter,there was neither land nor people.For instance,the setting of emigrant in Sixteen Countries was nearly nominal.As for the setting in Northern Dynasty,the situation was like no more than the followings:the setting for attracting and installing vagrants,the setting for special emigrants,the setting for expanding land and coveting the nominations,and the non-abolishment of the setting of emigrant in Sixteen Countries.The textual research and study on Qiao Zhou Jun Xian and population of emigrant in Sixteen Countries and Northern Dynasty should include the viewpoints in comparison with the study on Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasty.And the difficulties of the study are much greater than the study on Eastern Jin and Southern Dynasty.

Abstract:The paper uses the data obtained from 10 villages in Gansu province to compare the characteristics and the tendency between two generations of migrant laborers.The result indicates that the mobility of rural labor in China has entered into a new stage,and the second generation who are born in the reform and opening time is becoming the major component.Their opinions,reasons,behavior for migration,and expectation for life have changed greatly.These changes will have profound influences on China's socio-economic development.

Abstract:During the period of the Eastern Jin, the Sixteen States, the Southern dynasties, and the Northern dynasties, population movement caused the conflicts both between the Han and minorities in the north and immigrants and natives in the south. The traditional method of estimating the immigrants was based on the households of migration prefectures, subprefectures and counties recorded in local gazetteers, which is actually different between the actual distribution of immigrants and those registered in local gazetteers. Thus, the migration population and their descendents need to be recalculated. In fact, migrations in the Sixteen States were largely for military and agriculture purposes, while in the Northern dynasties, particularly the Northern Wei, population movements were mostly to fill the capitals, the boundary and inland areas, both were enforced by the governments. Population migration often determined government policies, enriched cultural contents, promoted economic developments, and changed the intellectual trends and social structure in certain dynasties, especially in the Eastern Jin and the Southern dynasties.

Abstract:Immigrants are the most active of the media in cultural transmission.The history of China is factually a history of immigrants,i.e.there are tendencies where people constantly move from developed areas to the relatively backward,under-developed ones,promoting the development of those areas through cultural exchange,in which those immigrants with a higher cultural quality and having an advantage in both economy and politics play a key role.In the history of Shaoxing,the development of Yue culture bears a close relationship to several large-scale immigrant movements.The first surge at which Northern people migrated down to Shaoxing arrived soon after the Yongjia Rebellion.The then two established families,the Wang family and Xie family,positively influenced Shaoxing culture.After the Jingkang Rebellion at the end of the Sothern Song Dynasty came the second surge of Northern immigrants.With the heart of politics,economy and culture moving southwards,there appeared many celebrities,some of whom were locals,some of whom were descendants of the immigrants,and still others were offspring of the immigrants and aborigines.Cultural transmission in history is bi-directional,with both input and output.Wise Shaoxing people invented a way to make a living,namely,being a "Shiye" (a kind of counselor for ancient officials),a great number of whom went to all corners of China,forming a particular political culture in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.The bi-directional feature of cultural transmission has been proven by such personages as Cai Yuanpei,Lu Xun,Ma Yinchu and Zhu Kezhen in contemporary Chinese history,and by "Didu Troupe" (the predecessor of Yue Drama) which swept China only after it was spread to Shanghai.In order to keep its leading position,any culture has to facilitate the flow of talent without any exception.In both cases of mere input or mere output of the talents,the repertoire of talents will be either exhausted,thus sluggish,or superfluous,thus wasting.The exploration of how immigrants were related to cultural transmission in history remains practical and important to the sustainable development of Shaoxing today.

Abstract:Immigrants to Lin'an, the capital city of the Southern Song Dynasty, may be classified into three groups: those from the North at the turn of the Northern and the Southern Song Dynasty, new comers from the North and the Northeast in the Southern Song, and those from the South. Influenced by the native cultures of these immigrants, a merging of cultures occurred in Lin'an. The indigenous southern culture experienced a shift to a culture based on northern characteristics with northern nomadic influences. However, the local culture of Lin'an finally evolved into one that was based mainly on southern characteristics yet bore some influences from northern traditions of the remote past.

Abstract:Exploration and summarization of the laws of migration is one of the important topics in the historical migration study. Long history and complexity of migrating movements which happened in ancient China provides abundant sources for our research. Chinese scholars paid more attention to case studies of migration and have published a lot of papers and works (e.g. Chinese History of Migration, 1997), but little progress has been made on presentation of migration theories. As an tentative work, using the foreign scholars' successful experience (e. g. Ravenstein's laws of migration) for reference, basing on many other Chinese scholars' achievement in this field, the author of this paper deduces five categories of migration laws from Chinese history: 1. Political dominance . Political factors usually play the most important role in many mass migrations. It is easily found that in many dynasties forced migration and free migration made the capital the most populous region. Chaos in transition of dynasties produced a large numbers of refugees and forced them leave their homeland to find shelters. Forced current inevitably produced a compensating countercurrent. 2. Density of population and carrying capacity . Carrying capacity is the key factor for the quantity of population who lived in a certain place. People tend to move to those regions of low population density. On the other hand, overcrowding would force some inhabitants to move to other places. 3. Impelling of disaster and famine .Chinese people were subject to repeated natural disasters in long history. Fierce disaster would damage agriculture badly and lack of food often threatened peoples' lives. Fleeing to other places to seek food gave people a way of saving their lives. The more fierce famine emerged, the more residents left their hometown. 4. Migration of ethnic groups . The basic distribution pattern of ethnic groups in ancient China was formed from pre-Qin period. The Han people gathered in the Central Plain and other ethnic groups scattered the frontiers and border regions. As a moving trend, people of other ethnic groups tried to move into the Central Plain, while the Han people escaped to border regions to avoid heavy taxation and corvee. 5. Migrant and regional characteristics of culture . Migrants are the most important carrier of culture and customs. The cultural characteristics of migrant region were determined by the selection of migrants. Most migrants liked to accept the elegant culture achievement of the Han people while they kept their original customs and dialects.

Abstract:Since "Belt and Road Initiative" (BRI) of 2014, the number of foreigners in China has increased rapidly and China has become an importing country for immigrants, a change ongoing since the beginning of the 21st century. To respond to the rapidly increasing number of foreigners in China, the government frequently revised the immigration policies and issued new regulations for foreigners. However, scholars understand very little about how the foreigners perceive their integration into Chinese society or decide to pursue long-term residency or lawful permanent resident status. While some pioneering studies touch on this, with samples from the coastal megacities, no empirical evidence has been collected from smaller, inner cities. Three new findings about the foreigners in Xi'an, a major city in western China, fill this literature gap. First, the level of subjective social integration is largely influenced by the local networks. Second, the level of objective social integration depends largely on local and hometown networks. Third, the intention to obtain long-term and permanent residency in China is more evident in those foreigners who come from countries covered by the BRI and who consider China to be a better place to live than their home country.

Abstract:Lanzhou and Xi'ning,which account for the most population and economy of Gansu and Qinghai Province,are the nearest provincial capitalsin the west region,and the "X-model" hub region at the cross of the west Longhai-lanxin economy belt and Hubao-baolan-lanxin-qingzang economy belt converge.To some extent, they have the qualification and potential to become city region.The qualification and potential were analyzed in detail,and some researches on the optimum and recombination of the spatial structure of Lanzhou-Xi'ning City region were made.
The Geopolitical and Social Situations of Yunnan and Guizhou Regions in the Early Qing Dynasty

Abstract:In the first half period of the Qing Dynasty, it is very effectively political performance of the central authorities that the reorganization of fu and zhou, the consolidation of wei and suo, and the reform of the local administrative systems (gai tu gui liu) were carried out in Yunnan and Guizhou regions. Through the reform, central administration and social control system were established there, which provided important conditions for the later immigrants and full development, leaving profound impact on the local history. This paper, from the perspectives of historical geography and social history, carefully examines and restores the progresses of these political activities in various areas. It finds that these activities had not fully played out during the reconstruction in certain regional societies. And their performances were not as ideally carried out as that was hold in academia. Yet with such deficiencies in administrative system, a general in-depth development was still promoted because of the favorable environment brought from the immigrant economy, which finally resulted in the integration of political system. The new break-through not only promotes the research of historical relation of the central and region, but also sheds light on the study of the social and historical processes of Yunnan and Guizhou regions.
Farmers' Rural-To-Urban Migration, Influencing Factors and Development Framework: A Case Study of Sihe Village of Gansu, China

Abstract:Farmers are the major participants in rural development process and their willingness to settle in urban areas directly affects the implementation of rural revitalization strategy. Based on Ostrom's institutional analysis and development (IAD) framework, we analyzed farmers' willingness to settle in urban areas and its influencing factors by binary Logistic regression and cluster analysis of survey data of 190 rural households in Sihe village of Gansu Province of China. The results show that: (1) In Sihe village, farmers' willingness to settle in urban areas was low in general and influenced by their neighbors' decisions or behaviors. Households willing and unwilling to migrate to urban areas both presented significant spatial agglomeration. (2) The factors influencing farmers' willingness to settle in urban areas were analyzed from six aspects: individual characteristics, family characteristics, residence characteristics, cognitive characteristics, institutions, and constraints. The main influencing factors were found to be age, occupation, number of non-agricultural workers in the family, household cultivated land area, annual household income, house building materials, degree of satisfaction with social pension, homestead and contracted land subsidies, income constraints, and other constraints. (3) Individual heterogeneity and difference in economic basis determined the difference in farmers' willingness to settle in urban areas. Abstract:Due to a lack of statistical documentation about city population in the traditional literature. The methods of most previous studies in the past were focused on the personal experience and individual case. It is impossible for us to meet the needs of research and get reliable conclusions without new literature and new methods. The study of the Xuantong-Geographic-Questionnaire shows that the model of urban population hierarchy is not consistent with the city administrative level. It is impracticable to establish a complete sequence of historical city population by using traditional historical data. Trying to build the model of urban population hierarchy on the basis of the city administrative levels must be logically wrong.

Abstract:In recent years,continuous challenges on the reliability of the records which contained the information of the clan's origin in the genealogy books have been made by scholars.In this paper,I compare two items of historical resources coming from Hunan and Jiangxi province in theVeritable Records of the Ming Dynasty with the historical resources kept in the genealogy books which also come from the same regions.And I find that the records in genealogy books and theVeritable Records of the Ming Dynasty coincide basically and it also proves that the records of the clan's origin in the genealogy book are creditable.Moreover,this paper also proves that the emigration appearing in the south of China was organized and planed elaborately by the central government in the early periods of Ming Dynasty.The emigration in "Wa Xie Ba" really happened in the history and it is not a legend,not to mention a fiction.

Abstract:Literature on immigrants in Qing Dynasty Sichuan usually sees the objects of Huiguan worship as symbols of their identity with their ancestral home. This collective psychological presentation suggests that immigrants' identification with their old home was established to a large extent in the cultural diversity of their place of resettlement. Group identification with the ancestral home was intertwined with rather than opposed to identification with the new home. Immigrants usually saw their native gods as symbols of their ancestral home, while at the same time they attached to these gods new identities going beyond geographic boundaries. In this regard, it may be concluded that while on the one hand worship of "native gods" as a symbol of immigrants' local identity was constructed, on the other hand, it was deconstructed and reconstructed by a new narrative.

Abstract:In the process of “developing the West of China”,the implementation of many projects and rising of the service sector in western cities attracted many temporary laborers from the east and central parts of China.They have positive impact on the local economic development while causing competition with native laborers in job market.Since the majority of these temporary migrants have different ethnic and cultural background,the interaction between migrants and natives has involved with ethnic and religious factors.Lhasa as the capital city of Tibet Autonomous Region also attracted many temporary migrants.This paper is the reports based on the 2005 temporary migration questionnaire survey.The paper provides a systematic analysis of demographic,social and economic characteristics of temporary migrants in Lhasa,and discusses their impact on the local society.

Abstract:Shanxi experienced a severe population shortage after the late Qing Dingwu famine. The frequent disasters and warfare of the Republican era further increased population movements in north China, and in addition to northeast China, Shanxi became a major destination for migrants. In this period over two million migrants settled in Shanxi. Those that settled in the countryside formed a unique social group of immigrant households. The kinship and territorial bonds of north Chinese villages are well known, and such villages are often considered to have been very insular and xenophobic communities. Migrant households found it difficult to join the village community, and often had no choice but to live precarious lives on the outskirts of villages. Migrant households had to acquire “settlement rights” in the village in order to have any chance of survival and development. But settlement rights could not be achieved overnight; they were not only a matter of time, but also involved certain requirements and favorable circumstances. Through a close examination of “class background registers” compiled during the Four Cleanups movement (1963–1966), this article shows how migrant households in late Qing and Republican China used famine as an opportunity to gradually acquire settlement rights. On the one hand, migrants used wage labor, tenancy, and credit to form dependent relations through land with resident households. On the other hand, they used social relations, adoption, and uxorilocal marriage to form kinship relations with resident households. Compared to south China, where village settlement rights emphasized recognition of common ancestry, settlement rights in north China villages emphasized common lived experience. This difference is an important factor in explaining rural social formation and development in north China.
Evolving population distribution in China's border regions: Spatial differences, driving forces and policy implications

Abstract:The security and socioeconomic development of China's border areas are of great significance to the nation and the wider world. Using census, statistical, digital elevation model (DEM) and network data, this paper employs visual analysis to capture population distribution patterns in China's 131 border counties from 1982 to 2010. Multiple stepwise regression is carried out to identify the influencing factors of population dynamics in border regions. The main findings include: China's most heavily populated border areas are primarily in the northeast, northwest, and the Guangxi-Yunnan region, while rapid growth of population is found in western Inner Mongolia, southwest Xinjiang, northwest Tibet, and southern Yunnan. Given the increasingly market-oriented migration mechanism, the national reclamation policy has been no longer effective in population attraction in the new century. Education has significantly lowered and will continuously lower the fertility rate in remote border areas. The factors influencing population growth show a remarkable regional heterogeneity along China's long border.
Migration and Distribution of Chinese Korean Nationality Since the Beginning of the 19th Century

Abstract:As an ethnic minority,the migration of Chinese Korean nationality has been for a long period.The formation and characteristics of Chinese Korean migration were analyzed based on Chinese Korean population data using GIS from the mid-19th century to the year 2000.The early migration from their native land to the Northeast China through Tumen River and Yalu River with a large-scale started at the late of the 19th century.Before the People's Republic of China was founded,Chinese Korean nationality mainly distributed in the Northeast China.Just after liberation,population of them changed little,but increased after the Korean War broke out.Since China's reform and openning-up,another large-scale Chinese Korean migration moved to South China and distributed all over the China,whose population in the early settlements decreased gradually.The migration of Chinese Korean nationality inevitably led to the population redistribution and the changes of settlements' scale.Five main settlements formed before 1949,referred to as settlements of Nanman,Beiman,Dongman,Dongbiandao and Guannei.Almost half of the Korean Chinese lived in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture since it was founded and the settlements kept stable there.After China's reform and openning-up,some new Chinese Korean nationality settlements were formed with Beijing,Qingdao,Shanghai,Shenzhen as their centers.Migration of the Chinese Korean nationality and the distribution pattern promoted the coordinated development of population and society of minority migration among cities in China.
