Abstract:BACKGROUND:Trust is important for health at both the individual and societal level. Previous research using Western concepts of trust has shown that a high level of trust in society can positively affect individuals' health; however, it has been found that the concepts and culture of trust in China are different from those in Western countries and research on the relationship between trust and health in China is scarce.METHOD:The analyses use data from the national scale China General Social Survey (CGSS) on adults aged above 18 in 2005 and 2010. Two concepts of trust ("out-group" and "in-group" trust) are used to examine the relationship between trust and self-rated health in China. Multilevel logistical models are applied, examining the trust at the individual and societal level on individuals' self-rated health.RESULTS:In terms of interpersonal trust, both "out-group" and "in-group" trust are positively associated with good health in 2005 and 2010. At the societal level, the relationships between the two concepts of trust and health are different. In 2005, higher "out-group" social trust (derived from trust in strangers) is positively associated with better health; however, higher "in-group" social trust (derived from trust in most people) is negatively associated with good health in 2010. The cross-level interactions show that lower educated individuals (no education or only primary level), rural residents and those on lower incomes are the most affected groups in societies with higher "out-group" social trust; whereas people with lower levels of educational attainment, a lower income, and those who think that most people can be trusted are the most affected groups in societies with higher "in-group" social trust.CONCLUSION:High levels of interpersonal trust are of benefit to health. Higher "out-group" social trust is positively associated with better health; while higher "in-group" social trust is negatively associated with good health. Individuals with different levels of educational attainment are affected by trust differently.
Transport Connectivity and Regional Development in China

Abstract:This paper examines the relationship between transport connectivity and regional economic development in China. It develops measurements appropriate for transport connectivity based on a set of evaluation models. This model is used to analyze the logistic connectivity of China’s 31 provinces by focusing on 11 variables, including some new factors (Density of road network, Density of railway network, Number of Internet Users) not used in previous studies, over the 13-year period from 2002 to 2014. Using panel data regression analysis, the empirical results show a statistically significant and positive impact of transport connectivity (factors like Density of road network, Density of railway network and Number of Internet Users) on economic development in China. In particular, the Number of internet users is a key factor reflecting information connectivity in all the variables. Comparative analysis regarding economic development is conducted to benchmark between coastal provinces and interior provinces. Like most previous research, this study yields the same finding of higher impact of transport connectivity on economic development in eastern provinces than in western provinces. This study suggests that decentralized decision-making will be significantly more efficient for analyzing regional infrastructure development. It also shows that the influence of transport connectivity on economic development is dependent on a certain developmental stage. This suggests that an economic region should adopt different development strategies for transport connectivity during different stages of development.
Perceived Social Mobility and Political Trust in China

Abstract:Existing studies have traced China's high political trust to three sources: traditional culture, the state's success in fostering economic growth, and ideological propaganda. We identify a fourth source: perceived social mobility We argue that when people perceive a reasonable chance for upward mobility based on personal initiatives and efforts, the status quo becomes more justifiable because individuals are responsible for their own successes and failures. Perceived social mobility thus instills a sense of optimism and fairness and exonerates the regime from many blames, thereby enhancing political trust. Regression analysis of the China portion of the 2007 World Values Survey data shows that respondents who saw themselves as having choices and control in life were indeed more likely to trust the ruling communist party. The respondents' overall level of perceived social mobility is also high, which is consistent with the massive shake-up of the preexisting social order in China's reform era.
Regional Differences in the Effect of Interpersonal Relationship on Trust and Trustworthiness in China

Abstract:Guanxi, which literally means interpersonal relationship or social connections, plays an important role in achieving business success in China. This study investigates the effect of interpersonal relationship on trust and trustworthiness in four regions in China. Eighty pairs of close friends participated in the experiment: 20 pairs from Beijing, 20 pairs from Guangdong, 20 pairs from Shanghai, and 20 pairs from Chongqing. A cooperation experiment based on a two-tier simulated supply chain was conducted, in which the participant who played as a supplier solicited demand forecast information from the participant who played as a retailer to plan production. Participants were instructed to perform two tasks: one with a "friend" counterpart and one with a "stranger" counterpart. The results demonstrated regional differences in the effects of interpersonal relationship on trust and trustworthiness: the effect of interpersonal relationship was greater in Guangdong than in the other regions. Additionally, a quantified classification of trustworthiness-trust was proposed by clustering analysis. The type of self-protective trustworthiness and altruistic trust occupied an overwhelming majority in each region, followed by the type of altruistic trustworthiness and self-protective trust, the type of altruistic trustworthiness and altruistic trust, and the type of self-protective trustworthiness and self-protective trust. Regional differences in the distribution proportions in the four types were discovered.

Abstract:This article explores the effect of trust on financial market participation in China using the China Family Panel Studies, a comprehensive national survey dataset. We find that trust is a crucial factor of financial market participation. Using regional average trust scores as an instrument, we find that investors with higher level of trust are more likely to invest in financial markets, and to allocate a higher percentage of wealth to financial products such as stocks and bonds. Moreover, the impact of trust on financial market participation is cross-sectionally different. While trust significantly promotes financial market participation for wealthier households, its effect is not significant for less wealthy households. And trust has a larger effect on participation for those with less financial knowledge in general. For the above-median-wealth households in particular, trust encourages financial market participation only for those with financial knowledge below the average.
Social trust in subnational regions and foreign subsidiary performance: Evidence from foreign investments in China

Abstract:Recent research suggests that subnational regions can explain the variation in foreign subsidiary performance. However, most studies either treat subnational regions as a whole or focus on formal institutions at the subnational level. This study examines how general social trust, an important dimension of informal institutions at the subnational level, affects foreign subsidiary performance. In a sample of 17,886 foreign investments in China in 2012, we find that the level of social trust in subnational regions has a positive effect on the performance of foreign subsidiaries, reducing the liability of outsidership faced by foreign subsidiaries. Our results also show that this positive effect is contingent on local embeddedness of the foreign subsidiaries. Our findings highlight the importance of incorporating informal institutions at the subnational level in examining strategies and strategy outcomes.
Trust and inter-regional M&As: Evidence from China

Abstract:This paper investigates the economic impact of trust on inter-region mergers and acquisitions (M&As) using a large sample of M&As in China. We find that trust distance among regions negatively predicts frequency of inter-region mergers, merger volume and synergy gains. Economic mechanism analysis shows that trust distance lowers merger gains through imposing transaction cost on the deal. The negative effects of trust distance on inter-region M&As activities and synergy gains are less pronounced when legal institution level distance between regions are smaller, consistent with trust being a substitute for formal institutions; it is less prominent when corporate governance and information disclosure level distance between regions are smaller, suggesting that trust is more important in transactions with higher information asymmetry; it is less salient when financial market development level distances between regions are smaller, consistent with trust is less important with repeated interactions between economic parties. Overall, our results highlight the role trust plays in shaping corporate decisions and economic outcomes.

Understanding the Determinants of Public Trust in the Health Care System in China: an Analysis of a Cross-Sectional Survey.

Abstract:Objectives Despite increasing research attention on public trust in health care systems, empirical evidence on this topic in the developing world is limited and inconclusive. This paper examines the level and determinants of public trust in the health care system in China. Methods We used data from a survey conducted with a sample of 5347 adults in all Chinese provincial areas between January and February 2016. Trust in the health care system was assessed with a question used by the 2011-2013 International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) to assess public trust in the health care systems of 29 industrialized countries and regions ('In general, how much confidence do you have in the health care system in your country?'). Results Only 28% of respondents reported that they had a great deal or complete trust in China's health care system. Respondents who reported to have more trust in other people in society, more trust in the local government and who were more satisfied with their most recent health care system experience and their health insurance were significantly more likely to trust the country's health care system. Furthermore, respondents who reported a higher level of happiness, better health status and positive attitudes towards social equity were more likely to trust the health care system in China. Conclusions Our findings suggest that low public trust in China's health care system is a potential problem. Improving health care experiences may be the most practical and effective way of improving trust in the health care system in China.

Abstract:The market system and the state redistribution system,the two fundamental institutional environments in current China,are the focal theme in the academic research on the Chinese society in transition,both at home and abroad.Based on previous discussions on these two types of institutional environments,this study shifted attention from life opportunities to individuals' generalized trust as a function of different institutional contexts.Using propensity score matching to deal with potential selection biases,this study analyzed the data from Chinese General Social Survey 2010,which revealed significant effects of institutional contexts on individuals' generalized trust.In particular,employees in the public sector,as compared with those in the private sector(foreign-invested and privately owned enterprises),had higher levels of generalized trust,which reflected the nonmaterial consequences of different institutional arrangements in China.Further mediation tests indicated that political participation and relative deprivation significantly mediated between employment sectors and generalized trust.Those who worked in the public sector possessed a higher level of internal political efficacy and were more likely to get involved in community voting.Such an attitude and behavioral participation promoted their propensity of trusting generalized others.The lower level of their relative deprivation in regards to social and economic status also helped with building their higher generalized trust.

Abstract:As cross-cultural studies become crucial to business enterprises and other societal organizations that compete internationally, this article assesses managerial outlook toward trust in China and Pakistan. Questionnaire data were collected from two separate groups, different in term of anthropogeogr aphy, culture and economy, so it was not surprising to find that these prospective managers also differ in their outlook toward trust. Also noted are, however, multiple significant similarities. The present study offers a refreshing approach to cross-cultural comparisons pertaining to trust. Based on the findings, the study also provides suggestions for management and practitioners and recommends new directions for future research.

Abstract:Social trust helps to reduce information asymmetry and agency conflicts between insiders and investors, and thus alleviates the pressure on firms to pay cash dividends. Consistent with this view, we find that Chinese firms in low-trust regions make higher dividend payouts than those in high-trust regions. The negative effect of trust is more pronounced in firms with lower information transparency and weaker corporate governance. We additionally find a lower market reaction to dividend announcements for firms in high-trust areas, and moreover that the role of social trust is more important for firms that are lacking in political connections and located in areas with weak institutions. Our results are robust to alternative measures of social trust and dividends and the use of the instrumental variable approach to alleviate endogeneity concerns. Overall, the findings highlight the important role of social trust in corporate governance and corporate dividend policy, along with its ability to substitute for formal institutions.
The Dual Effect of Economic Development on Trust in the Central Government: Evidence from Two Waves of a National Survey in China*

Abstract:Abstract:Using individual-level survey data while incorporating county/district-level information on per capita gross domestic product, this study finds that economic development in China has a dual effect on popular trust in the central government. First, positive individual-level perception of family economic conditions (compared to the past) increases trust in central government. Second, county/district-level per capita GDP is negatively correlated with individual-level trust in the central government. Methodologically, the article suggests that researchers may conduct contextualized thought experiment to establish logical priority of one event over another, particularly when it is impractical to empirically determine the temporal sequence of phenomena that are observed simultaneously in cross-sectional surveys. The article also suggests that China scholars may employ cross-region comparison as a substitute for longitudinal research when it comes to projecting long-term effects of quantitatively traceable changes such as economic development.

Abstract:The institutional environment has a significant impact on the location of overseas investments by multinational enterprises (MNEs). However, there remain two research gaps. First, fewer studies focused on the impact of subnational regional institutions on the location choices of MNEs. Second, study on informal institutions has been more limited. This study investigates the effect of the informal institution (social trust) in the Chinese subnational region on the location choices of foreign firms and the mechanism of its role. Using the sample of foreign firms’ location choices in China from 2008 to 2020 in Orbis Global Enterprise Database, this study finds that social trust positively related to the location choices of foreign firms in subnational regions. Our results also show that this positive effect is contingent on the formal institution and the cultural distance between home and host country. When the formal institution is strong and the cultural distance between home and host country is high, social trust has a more significant positive impact on the location choices of foreign firms in subnational regions. Besides, the results show that cost advantage, information advantage and innovation advantage are important mechanisms for social trust to influence foreign firms’ location choices in subnational regions. This study is important for understanding the role of subnational regional informal institutions in influencing strategic decisions of MNEs. At the same time, it has certain guiding significance for governments in attracting foreign direct investment and for multinational enterprises in selecting suitable overseas investment locations.

Using panel data from China, we find that the stock market wealth effect is more prevalent in regions with more stockholders, regions in which households have higher levels of stock ownership and regions in which households have lower incomes.

Abstract:Two studies investigated the cross‐temporal and cross‐sectional associations between income inequality and interpersonal trust in China. In Study 1, a cross‐temporal meta‐analysis involving 141 studies (N = 64,853) found that Chinese college students' scores on the Interpersonal Trust Scale (Rotter, 1967) decreased 0.54 SD from 1998 to 2016, and that the decline in interpersonal trust across birth cohorts was explained by earlier income inequality index in China. In Study 2, a cross‐regional analysis showed that Chinese citizens in provinces with more income inequality (vs. less inequality) perceived the local government to be less trustworthy and, in turn, reported lower levels of interpersonal trust. These findings contribute to the understanding of the rising income inequality as an explanation for the waning interpersonal trust in China, and point to a crucial channel connecting income inequality with interpersonal trust.

The Radius of Generalized Trust in Contemporary China

Abstract:Drawing on survey data collected in 2011, this study investigates the radius of generalized trust in contemporary China. Based on the results of the ordinary least squares and finite mixture models, we find the average radius of generalized trust in the urban population is wider than that of the rural population. In addition, on average, married people show a narrower circle of generalized trust in both urban and rural areas. Minorities, better educated individuals in rural China and individuals holding a rural household registration status in urban China have a wider radius. There is a trade-off relationship between the level and the radius of generalized trust, and cross-cohort analysis provides preliminary evidence of a longitudinal extension in the radius of generalized trust over the past decades, especially after the launch of the reform and opening-up policy. Finally, identity-based social participation significantly curtails people's radius of generalized trust in urban areas.

Abstract:The observation that in China people generally do not trust strangers motivated us to study this phenomenon. We used the literature of guanxi to define strangers, and we drew on intergroup contact theory to hypothesize that positive experiences with outgroup, but not with ingroup members will increase trust in strangers. In three experiments we found that perceiving support from (Study 1), receiving help from (Study 2), and being trusted by (Study 3) outgroup members led to higher trust in strangers. Indirect reciprocity mediated this relationship, suggesting that people generalize experiences with one outgroup member to other social actors, and in turn, increase their trust in strangers. Study 4 showed that intrapersonal trust increased after a positive outgroup experience. Study 5 replicated this finding using secondary field data. This research contributes to the trust literature by showing how specific and eventful experiences increase trust in strangers. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Government Governance And Political Trust In Transition China: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract:Recently, building a service-oriented government and pursuing good governance have become indispensable choices for Chinese government to promote socio-economic development. As the tie between individual citizen and various government institutions, political trust is not only regarded as an important indicator of political legitimacy embodying citizens' support for government, but also treated as scarce resource which is helpful to enhance governance performance. Based on 2008 Chinese Public Attitudes towards Citizenship National Survey and relevant macro data, this paper tries to explore quantitatively the complex relationship between government governance and political trust in transition China, especially the effect of economic development, social welfare and pure public goods supply on political trust. OLS model shows that there is a significant relationship between the positive retrospective and prospective assessment of economic development, social welfare and public goods supply and high level of political trust, and yet retrospective assessments have more explanatory power than prospective ones. Besides, subjective assessment of pure public goods supply, but not subjective assessment of economic development, has the strongest influence on political trust. HLM model suggests that objective county governance performance has a significant effect on average political trust at county level: the higher the per capita welfare fiscal expenditure and the lower the Gini coefficient and unemployment rate at county level, the higher the average political trust at county level; however, high per capita GDP doesn't foster political trust, but reduce political trust weakly. We conclude that though economic development is still one of the roots for political trust, social welfare and pure public goods supply are coming to replace economic development as new important sources for political trust.

Abstract:Using panel data from three rounds of the China Family Panel Studies and employing the panel Tobit random-effects model, our study firstly examines the impact of trust on e-commerce consumption amount. We find that trust has a significantly positive effect on e-commerce consumption. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the causal effect is particularly pronounced among younger families and in urban areas. Our paper enriches the studies on the impact of trust on consumption and platform economy.
