Abstract:Fractional quantum Hall systems are often described by model wave functions,which are the ground states of pure systems with short-range interaction.A primary example is the Laughlin wave function,which supports Abelian quasiparticles with fractionalized charge.In the presence of disorder,the wave function of the ground state is expected to deviate from the Laughlin form.We study the disorder-driven colla.pse of the quantum Hall state by analyzing the evolution of the ground state and the single-quasihole state.In particular,we demonstrate that the quasihole tunneling amplitude can signal the fractional quantum Hall phase to insulator transition.

Abstract:We construct the hierarchical wave function of the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect, which turns out to satisfy Fock cyclic condition. The spin-statistics relation of the quasi-particles in the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect is also discussed. Then we use particle-hole conjugation to check the wave function.

Abstract:We investigate the W infinite symmetries in the theory of general fractional quantum Hall effects by using the lowest Landau level constraint approach. We find that there does exist a W infinite symmetric algebra for the fractional quantum Hall system with all the quasiparticles being restricted to the lowest Landau level. The corresponding generators can be used to generate the new degenerate wavefunctions of the lowest Landau level states by means of Laughlin and Halperin wavefunctions. Meanwhile, we find there still exists another W infinite symmetric algebra in the system, whose generators are used to generate the degenerate wavefunctions of the lowest Landau level for the anti-quasiparticles. We conclude that the FQH system can effectively be described by quasiparticle features or anti-quasiparticle features. We also show that the local part of the W infinite symmetric algebras is the magnetic translation operator of the general fractional quantum Hall system. We finally construct the operators of the single mode wave density excitations in the system and discuss their operator product relations.

Abstract:We present a framework for analytic calculations of the hierarchical wave functions and the composite fermion wave functions in the fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere by using projective coordinates. Then we calculate the overlaps between these two wave functions at various fillings and small numbers of electrons. We find that the overlaps are almost equal to 1. This gives further evidence that two theories of the fractional quantum Hall effect, the hierarchical theory and the composite fermion theory, are physically equivalent.

Abstract:We provide a detailed study of the Abelian quasiholes of nu = 1/2 bosonic fractional quantum Hall states on the torus geometry and in fractional Chern insulators. We find that the density distribution of a quasihole in a fractional Chern insulator can be related to that of the corresponding fractional quantum Hall state by choosing an appropriate length unit on the lattice. This length unit only depends on the lattice model that hosts the fractional Chern insulator. Therefore, the quasihole size in a fractional Chern insulator can be predicted for any lattice model once the quasihole size of the corresponding fractional quantum Hall state is known. We discuss the effect of the lattice embedding on the quasihole size. We also perform the braiding of quasiholes for fractional Chern insulator models to probe the fractional statistics of these excitations. The numerical values of the braiding phases accurately match the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 116801 (2011)].

Abstract:I demonstrate that the wavefunction for a nu = n+ tilde{nu} quantum Hall state with Landau levels 0,1,...,n-1 filled and a filling fraction tilde{nu} quantum Hall state with 0 < tilde{nu} \leq 1 in the nth Landau level can be obtained hierarchically from the nu = n state by introducing quasielectrons which are then projected into the (conjugate of the) tilde{nu} state. In particular, the tilde{nu}=1 case produces the filled Landau level wavefunctions hierarchically, thus establishing the hierarchical nature of the integer quantum Hall states. It follows that the composite fermion description of fractional quantum Hall states fits within the hierarchy theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect. I also demonstrate this directly by generating the composite fermion ground-state wavefunctions via application of the hierarchy construction to fractional quantum Hall states, starting from the nu=1/m Laughlin states.

Abstract:Recently, fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), also called fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, have been theoretically established in lattice systems with topological flat bands. These systems exhibit similar fractionalization phenomena to the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems. Using the mapping relationship between the FQH states and the FCI/FQAH states, we construct the many-body wave functions of the fermionic FCI/FQAH states in disk geometry with the aid of the generalized Pauli principle (GPP) and Jack polynomials. Compared with the ground state by the exact diagonalization method, the wave-function overlap is higher than 0.97, even when the Hilbert space dimension is as large as 3 x 10(6). We also use the GPP and the Jack polynomials to construct edge excitations for the fermionic FCI/FQAHstates. The quasi-degeneracy sequences of fermionic FCI/FQAH systems reproduce the prediction of the chiral Luttinger liquid theory, complementing the exact diagonalization results with larger lattice sizes and more particles.

Abstract:The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjugate transformation for coupled-wire models is also given as a special case of the hierarchy construction. We also propose coupled-wire models for the composite Fermi liquid, which turn out to be compatible with a sort of the particle-hole symmetry implemented in a nonlocal way at $\nu=1/2$. Furthermore, our approach shows explicitly the connection between the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and a chiral $p$-wave pairing of the composite fermions. This composite fermion picture is also generalized to a family of the Pfaffian state, including the anti-Pfaffian state and Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy states.

Fractional Quantum Hall Bilayers at Half-Filling: Tunneling-driven Non-Abelian Phase

Abstract:Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here, we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil ``fingerprint'' evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian (331) Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a ``proof-of-principle'' demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\text{wave}$ pairing states.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in Topological Flat Bands with Chern Number Two

Abstract:Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C = 1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C = 2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the nu = 1/3 filling characterized by threefold quasidegeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap in quasihole excitation spectrum. We also observe numerical evidence of a robust fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect for spinless fermions at the nu = 1/5 filling with short-range interactions.
Fractional Quantum Hall Effect Based on Weyl Orbits

Abstract:The fractional quantum Hall effect is a well-known demonstration of strongly correlated topological phases in two dimensions. However, the extension of this phenomenon into a three-dimensional context has yet to be achieved. Recently, the three-dimensional integer quantum Hall effect based on Weyl orbits has been experimentally observed in a topological semimetallic material under a magnetic field. This motivates us to ask whether the Weyl orbits can give rise to the fractional quantum Hall effect when their Landau level is partially filled in the presence of interactions. Here we theoretically demonstrate that the fractional quantum Hall states based on Weyl orbits can emerge in a Weyl semimetal when a Landau level is one-third filled. Using concrete models for Weyl semimetals in magnetic fields, we project the Coulomb interaction onto a single Landau level from the Weyl orbit and find that the ground state of the many-body Hamiltoian is triply degenerate. We further show that the ground states exhibit the many-body Chern number of $1/3$ and the uniform occupation of electrons in both momentum and real space, implying that they are the fractional quantum Hall states. In contrast to the two-dimensional case, the states are spatially localized on two surfaces hosting Fermi arcs. Additionally, our findings suggest that the excitation properties of these states resemble those of the Laughlin state in two dimensions, as inferred from the particle entanglement spectrum of the ground states.

Abstract:Recent theoretical insights into the possibility of non-Abelian phases in nu = 2/3 fractional quantum Hall states revived the interest in the numerical phase diagram of the problem. We investigate the effect of various kinds of two-body interlayer couplings on the (330) bilayer state and exactly solve the Hamiltonian for up to 14 electrons on sphere and torus geometries. We consider interlayer tunneling, short-ranged repulsive/attractive pseudopotential interactions, and Coulomb repulsion. We find a 6-fold ground-state degeneracy on the torus when the interlayer hollow-core interaction is dominant. To identify the topological nature of this phase we measure the orbital-cut entanglement spectrum, quasihole counting, topological entanglement entropy, and wave-function overlap. Comparing the numerical results to the theoretical predictions, we interpret this 6-fold ground-state degeneracy phase to be the non-Abelian bilayer Fibonacci state.
Exotic Non-Abelian Topological Defects in Lattice Fractional Quantum Hall States.

Abstract:We investigate extrinsic wormholelike twist defects that effectively increase the genus of space in lattice versions of multicomponent fractional quantum Hall systems. Although the original band structure is distorted by these defects, leading to localized midgap states, we find that a new lowest flat band representing a higher genus system can be engineered by tuning local single-particle potentials. Remarkably, once local many-body interactions in this new band are switched on, we identify various Abelian and non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states, whose ground-state degeneracy increases with the number of defects, i.e, with the genus of space. This sensitivity of topological degeneracy to defects provides a "proof of concept" demonstration that genons, predicted by topological field theory as exotic non-Abelian defects tied to a varying topology of space, do exist in realistic microscopic models. Specifically, our results indicate that genons could be created in the laboratory by combining the physics of artificial gauge fields in cold atom systems with already existing holographic beam shaping methods for creating twist defects.

Abstract:We perform an exact-diagonalization study of quasihole excitations for the two-component Halperin (221) state in the lowest Landau level and for several v = 1/3 bosonic fractional Chern insulators in topological flat bands with Chern number vertical bar C vertical bar=2. Properties including the quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics are evaluated. For the Halperin (221) model state, we observe isotropic quasiholes with a clear internal structure, and obtain the quasihole charge and statistics matching the theoretical values. Interestingly, we also extract the same quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics for the continuum model states of vertical bar C vertical bar=2 fractional Chern insulators, although the latter possess a "color-entangled" nature that does not exist in ordinary two-component Halperin states. We also consider two real lattice models with a band having vertical bar C vertical bar=2. There we find that a quasihole can exhibit much stronger oscillations of the density profile, while having the same charge and statistics as those in the continuum models.

Abstract:Calculations on finite-size systems are carried out to examine the hierarchy theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect. The concept of quasiparticle and quasihole is justified to remain valid at high densities. Numerical results reveal a hard-core boundary constraint on the anyonic quasiparticles so that their wave function must vanish as two of them get close in space. The dynamics of this constraint originates from a strong short-range repulsion between the quasiparticles. The observed quasiparticle-quasihole asymmetry in the hierarchy is understood through the hard-core anyon theory.

Abstract:We study the scaling behavior in the tunneling amplitude when quasiparticles tunnel along a straight path between the two edges of a fractional quantum Hall annulus. Such scaling behavior originates from the propagation and tunneling of charged quasielectrons and quasiholes in an effective field analysis. In the limit when the annulus deforms continuously into a quasi-one-dimensional (1D) ring, we conjecture the exact functional form of the tunneling amplitude for several cases, which reproduces the numerical results in finite systems exactly. The results for Abelian quasiparticle tunneling is consistent with the scaling analysis; this allows for the extraction of the conformal dimensions of the quasiparticles. We analyze the scaling behavior of both Abelian and non-Abelian quasiparticles in the Read-Rezayi Z(k)-parafermion states. Interestingly, the non-Abelian quasiparticle tunneling amplitudes exhibit non-trivial k-dependent corrections to the scaling exponent.

Abstract:The possibility of realizing lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, so-called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), in nearly flat topological (Chern) bands has attracted a lot of recent interest. Here, we make the connection between Abelian as well as non-Abelian FQH states and FCIs more precise. Using a gauge-fixed version of Qi's Wannier basis representation of a Chern band, we demonstrate that the interpolation between several FCI states, obtained by short-range lattice interactions in a spin-orbit-coupled kagome lattice model, and the corresponding continuum FQH states is smooth: the gap remains approximately constant and extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, while the low-lying part of the orbital entanglement spectrum remains qualitatively unaltered. The orbital entanglement spectra also provide a first glimpse of the edge physics of FCIs via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Corroborating these results, we find that the squared overlaps between the FCI and FQH ground states are as large as 98.7% for the 8-electron Laughlin state at v = 1/3 (consistent with an earlier study) and 97.8% for the 10-electron Moore-Read state at v = 1/2. For the bosonic analogs of these states, the adiabatic continuity is also shown to hold, albeit with somewhat smaller associated overlaps, etc. Although going between the Chern bands to the Landau-level problem is often smooth, we show that this is not always the case by considering fermions at filling fraction v = 4/5, where the interpolation between Hamiltonians describing the two systems results in a phase transition.
