Abstract:We study the hierarchical wave functions on a sphere and on a torus. We simplify some wave functions on a sphere or a torus using the analytic properties of wave functions. The open question, the construction of the wave function for quasielectron excitations on a torus, is also solved in this paper.

Abstract:We present a framework for analytic calculations of the hierarchical wave functions and the composite fermion wave functions in the fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere by using projective coordinates. Then we calculate the overlaps between these two wave functions at various fillings and small numbers of electrons. We find that the overlaps are almost equal to 1. This gives further evidence that two theories of the fractional quantum Hall effect, the hierarchical theory and the composite fermion theory, are physically equivalent.

Abstract:Starting from the hyperoctahedral multivariate hypergeometric function of Heckman and Opdam (associated with the $BC_n$ root system), we arrive -- via partial confluent limits in the sense of Oshima and Shimeno -- at solutions of the eigenvalue equations for the Toda chain with one-sided boundary perturbations of Pöschl-Teller type and for the hyperbolic Calogero-Sutherland system in a Morse potential. With the aid of corresponding degenerations of the (bispectral dual) difference equations for the Heckman-Opdam hyperoctahedral hypergeometric function, it is deduced that the eigensolutions in question are holomorphic in the spectral variable.

Abstract:We construct the hierarchical wave function of the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect, which turns out to satisfy Fock cyclic condition. The spin-statistics relation of the quasi-particles in the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect is also discussed. Then we use particle-hole conjugation to check the wave function.

Abstract:We investigate in the equal-time formalism the derivation and truncation of infinite hierarchies of equations of motion for the energy moments of the covariant Wigner function. From these hierarchies we then extract kinetic equations for the physical distribution functions which are related to low-order energy moments, and show how to determine the higher order moments in terms of these lowest order ones. We apply the general formalism to scalar and spinor QED with classical background fields and compare with the results derived from the three-dimensional Wigner transformation method.
From topological recursion to wave functions and PDEs quantizing hyperelliptic curves

Abstract:Starting from loop equations, we prove that the wave functions constructed from topological recursion on families of degree $2$ spectral curves with a global involution satisfy a system of partial differential equations, whose equations can be seen as quantizations of the original spectral curves. The families of spectral curves can be parametrized with the so-called times, defined as periods on second type cycles, and with the poles. These equations can be used to prove that the WKB solution of many isomonodromic systems coincides with the topological recursion wave function, which proves that the topological recursion wave function is annihilated by a quantum curve. This recovers many known quantum curves for genus zero spectral curves and generalizes this construction to hyperelliptic curves.

Abstract:The field-theoretic wavefunction has received renewed attention with the goal of better understanding observables at the boundary of de Sitter spacetime and studying the interior of Minkowski or general FLRW spacetime. Understanding the analytic structure of the wavefunction potentially allows us to establish bounds on physical observables. In this paper we develop an "amplitude representation" for the flat space wavefunction, which allow us to write the flat space wavefunction as an amplitude-like Feynman integral integrated over an energy-fixing kernel. With this representation it is possible to separate the wavefunction into an amplitude part and a subleading part which is less divergent as the total energy goes to zero. In turn the singularities of the wavefunction can be classified into two sets: amplitude-type singularities, which can be mapped to singularities found in amplitudes (including anomalous thresholds), and wavefunction-type singularities, which are unique to the wavefunction. As an example we study several tree level and one loop diagrams for scalars, and explore their singularities in detail.

Abstract:We give a description of the Hallnäs--Ruijsenaars eigenfunctions of the 2-particle hyperbolic Ruijsenaars system as matrix coefficients for the order 4 element $S\in SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ acting on the Hilbert space of $GL(2)$ quantum Teichmüller theory on the punctured torus. The $GL(2)$ Macdonald polynomials are then obtained as special values of the analytic continuation of these matrix coefficients. The main tool used in the proof is the cluster structure on the moduli space of framed $GL(2)$-local systems on the punctured torus, and an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariant embedding of the $GL(2)$ spherical DAHA into the quantized coordinate ring of the corresponding cluster Poisson variety.

The concentrated toroidal wave

Abstract:The classical solution to the Helmholtz wave equation in spherical coordinates is well known and has found many important applications in wave propagation, scattering, and imaging in optics and acoustics. The separable solution is comprised of spherical Bessel functions in the radial direction and spherical harmonics in the angular directions. The nature of the spherical Bessel functions includes a long asymptotic oscillatory tail at large radii, not conducive to applications where a tight concentration of wave amplitude around a ring is desired, for example in toroidal configurations. However, we have found that certain practical bandpass spectral shapes, centered around a peak frequency, can create a superposition of spherical Bessel functions that effectively concentrate the wave amplitude around a defined ring at the time instant of coherent addition, avoiding the long tail asymptotic oscillations of the single frequency solution. Theoretical solutions are shown for different bandpass spectra applied to the spherical Bessel functions, along with numerical solutions of transient wave propagation using practical hemispherical source shapes. These findings introduce a framework by which ring or toroidal concentrated waves can be produced with a simple bandpass superposition applied to hemispherical source shapes and with reference to the classical solutions in spherical coordinates.

Anyons and quantum Hall effect on the sphere

Abstract:We analyze anyons and the fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere by using the stereographic projective coordinate. We construct the hamiltonian, the angular momentum and obtain the ground states of anyons in some cases. The anyon gauge, the spin of the anyon and the spin-statistics relation are then discussed. We also construct the hierarchical wave function of spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall effect on the sphere and describe some relevant problems in the spin-singlet fractional quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:A theoretical framework is developed to describe the Topological Langmuir-Cyclotron Wave (TLCW), a recently identified topological surface excitation in magnetized plasmas. As a topological wave, the TLCW propagates unidirectionally without scattering in complex boundaries. The TLCW is studied theoretically as a spectral flow of the Hamiltonian Pseudo-Differential-Operator (PDO) $\hat{H}$ for waves in an inhomogeneous plasma. The semi-classical parameter of the Weyl quantization for plasma waves is identified to be the ratio between electron gyro-radius and the inhomogeneity scale length of the system. Hermitian eigenmode bundles of the bulk Hamiltonian symbol H for plasma waves are formally defined. Because momentum space in classical continuous media is contractible in general, the topology of the eigenmode bundles over momentum space is trivial. This is in stark contrast to condensed matters. Nontrivial topology of the eigenmode bundles in classical continuous media only exists over phase space. A boundary isomorphism theorem is established to facilitate the calculation of Chern numbers of eigenmode bundles over non-contractible manifolds in phase space. It also defines a topological charge of an isolated Weyl point in phase space without adopting any connection. Using these algebraic topological techniques and an index theorem formulated by Faure, it is rigorously proven that the nontrivial topology at the Weyl point of the Langmuir wave-cyclotron wave resonance generates the TLCW as a spectral flow. It is shown that the TLCW can be faithfully modeled by a tilted Dirac cone in phase space. An analytical solution of the entire spectrum of the PDO of a generic tilted phase space Dirac cone, including its spectral flow, is given. The spectral flow index of a tilted Dirac cone is one, and its mode structure is a shifted Gaussian function.
Higher Berry Curvature from the Wave function II: Locally Parameterized States Beyond One Dimension

Abstract:We propose a systematic wave function based approach to construct topological invariants for families of lattice systems that are short-range entangled using local parameter spaces. This construction is particularly suitable when given a family of tensor networks that can be viewed as the ground states of $d$ dimensional lattice systems, for which we construct the closed $(d+2)$-form higher Berry curvature, which is a generalization of the well known 2-form Berry curvature. Such $(d+2)$-form higher Berry curvature characterizes a flow of $(d+1)$-form higher Berry curvature in the system. Our construction is equally suitable for constructing other higher pumps, such as the (higher) Thouless pump in the presence of a global on-site $U(1)$ symmetry, which corresponds to a closed $d$-form. The cohomology classes of such higher differential forms are topological invariants and are expected to be quantized for short-range entangled states. We illustrate our construction with exactly solvable lattice models that are in nontrivial higher Berry classes in $d=2$.

Harmonic and monogenic functions on toroidal domains

Abstract:A standard technique for producing monogenic functions is to apply the adjoint quaternionic Fueter operator to harmonic functions. We will show that this technique does not give a complete system in L2 of a solid torus, where toroidal harmonics appear in a natural way. One reason is that this index-increasing operator fails to produce monogenic functions with zero index. Another reason is that the non-trivial topology of the torus requires taking into account a cohomology coefficient associated with monogenic functions, apparently not previously identified because it vanishes for simply connected domains. In this paper, we build a reverse-Appell basis of harmonic functions on the torus expressed in terms of classical toroidal harmonics. This means that the partial derivative of any element of the basis with respect to the axial variable is a constant multiple of another basis element with subscript increased by one. This special basis is used to construct respective bases in the real L2-Hilbert spaces of reduced quaternion and quaternion-valued monogenic functions on toroidal domains.

Nonrelativistic Dirac fermions on the torus

Abstract:Two dimensional conformal feld theories have been extensively studied in the past. When considered on the torus, they are strongly constrained by modular invariance. However, introducing relevant deformations or chemical potentials pushes these theories away from criticality, where many of their aspects are still poorly understood. In this note we make a step towards filling this gap, by analyzing the theory of a Dirac fermion on the torus, deformed by a mass term and a chemical potential for the particle number symmetry. The theory breaks conformal and Lorentz invariance, and we study its spectrum and partition function. We also focus on two limits that are interesting on their own right: a massless relativistic fermion with nonzero chemical potential (a simple model for CFTs at finite density), and nonrelativistic Schrodinger fermions (of relevance in condensed matter systems). Taking inspiration from recent developments in massive modular forms, we obtain a representation of the torus free energy based on Fourier-transforming over a twisted boundary condition. This dual representation fullfills many properties analogous to modular invariance in CFTs. In particular, we use this result to derive Cardy-like formulas for the high energy density of states of these theories.

Abstract:Hierarchical structures are structures that themselves contain structural elements. Hierarchical lattice structures are counterparts of the traditional lattice structures, whose walls are replaced by some kind of structure. In this paper, wave propagation in two-dimensional hierarchical hexagonal lattice structures is calculated by the finite element method with the Bloch theory. Attention is devoted to the comparison of the band gap, wave mode, dispersion surface, and phase and group velocities between the second-order hierarchical hexagonal lattice structures and their first-order traditional counterpart. The results show that the former structures have more band gaps and similar isotropic wave behavior in the low frequency compared to the latter structure. The structure hierarchy is favorable for the periodic lattice structure to filtering or guiding wave at some circumstances to meet the demands of engineering.
Topology of shallow-water waves on the rotating sphere

Abstract:Topological properties of the spectrum of shallow-water waves on a rotating spherical body are established. Particular attention is paid to its spectral flow, i.e. the modes whose frequencies transit between the Rossby and inertia-gravity wavebands as the zonal wave number is varied. Organising the modes according to the number of zeros of their meridional velocity, we conclude that the net number of modes transiting between the shallow-water wavebands on the sphere is null, in contrast with the Matsuno spectrum. This difference can be explained by a miscount of zeros under the $\beta$-plane approximation. We corroborate this result with the analysis of Delplace et al (2017) by showing that the curved metric discloses a pair of degeneracy points in the Weyl symbol of the wave operator, non-existent under the $\beta$-plane approximation, each of them bearing a Chern number $-1$.

Boundary conditions and the two-point function plateau for the hierarchical $|φ|^4$ model in dimensions 4 and higher

Abstract:We obtain precise plateau estimates for the two-point function of the finite-volume weakly-coupled hierarchical $|\varphi|^4$ model in dimensions $d \ge 4$, for both free and periodic boundary conditions, and for any number $n \ge 1$ of components of the field $\varphi$. We prove that, within a critical window around their respective effective critical points, the two-point functions for both free and periodic boundary conditions have a plateau, in the sense that they decay as $|x|^{-(d-2)}$ until reaching a constant plateau value of order $V^{-1/2}$ (with a logarithmic correction for $d=4$), where $V$ is size of the finite volume. The two critical windows for free and periodic boundary conditions do not overlap. The dependence of the plateau height on the location within the critical window is governed by an explicit $n$-dependent universal profile which is independent of the dimension. The proof is based on a rigorous renormalisation group method and extends the method used by Michta, Park and Slade (arXiv:2306.00896) to study the finite-volume susceptibility and related quantities. Our results lead to precise conjectures concerning Euclidean (non-hierarchical) models of spin systems and self-avoiding walk in dimensions $d \ge 4$.

Revisiting the hierarchical construction of higher-order exceptional points

Abstract:Higher-order exceptional points in the spectrum of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians describing open quantum or wave systems have a variety of potential applications in particular in optics and photonics. However, the experimental realization is notoriously difficult. Recently, Q. Zhong et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 203602 (2020)] have introduced a robust construction where a unidirectional coupling of two subsystems having exceptional points of the same order leads generically to a single exceptional point of twice the order. Here, we investigate this scheme in a different manner by exploiting the nilpotency of the traceless part of the involved Hamiltonians. We generalize the scheme and derive a simple formula for the spectral response strength of the composite system hosting a higher-order exceptional point. Its relation to the spectral response strengths of the subsystems is discussed. Moreover, we investigate nongeneric perturbations. The results are illustrated with an example.
