Abstract:Since Tang’s [1] and Burroughes’s [2] pioneering work, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on either small molecules or polymers have attracted intensive research interest because of their potential application in flat-panel displays (FPDs). For full-color applications, efficient emitting materials of all three primary colors (red, green, and blue) are required. Recently, red-emitting non-doped electroluminescent (EL) materials have been developed because they can be vac-uum-deposited as pure films in non-doped OLEDs, [3] thus simplifying the fabrication process and decreasing the cost for the mass production of OLEDs. However, non-doped red EL materials are rare. Conventional red-emitting materials are molecules either bearing strong donor–acceptor (D–A) polar substituents, such as pyran-containing dyes, [4] or with an extended p -conjugation, such as porphyrin-type macrocyclic compounds. [5] These materials tend to aggregate in highly concentrated solutions and solid states because of either dipole–dipole interactions or effective inter-molecular p – p stacking, and hence they have a strong concentration quenching [6] and are not suitable for non-doped systems. Ben-zo[1,2,5]thiadiazole(BTD)-based small molecules and polymers have been shown to have a good performance in red OLEDs, [7] especially in non-doped devices.
