Examining the validity of the Fudan English Test (FET): Test data analysis

Abstract:Fudan English Test (FET) is a criterion-referenced EAP (English for Academic Purposes) test, targeted at the undergraduate students studying at Fudan University. This paper first and foremost gives an introduction to the FET, in terms of its test content and format. It then proceeds to reporting the results of the data analysis of the first FET administration in December, 2011. The data analysis indicates that the FET internal consistent reliability is quite satisfactory, and so are the inter-component Pearson's correlations. The ANOVA results indicate that though there is statistically significant difference between the scores of different groups of test takers, the effect size is small. Exploratory factor analysis indicates that there are two factors ("productive English ability" and "receptive English ability") with Eigen value over 1. The data analyses lend some support to the validity of the FET. In the future, we will continue to improve the quality control procedures in test development, administration, and scoring, etc. Meanwhile, we will also continue to conduct relevant research of the FET.
