Abstract:This paper is engaged in a study of the double-phase flow and separator features in a double-phase cyclone separator in hope to increase the separation efficiency of small density particles below 30 μm.For this purpose,we have done numerical analyses of the threedimensional flow and separation activities of the dust and air in the modified two-phase cyclone by using the κ-e/RNG and DPM model. Due to the difficult separation of minute particles,the numerical simulation method can be used to simulate the particle motion in a cy- clone separator.The particle phase can be actually taken as a discrete phase.However,since the gas phase is seen as a continuous one,the κ-e turbulence model can be used for the intended flow simulation so as to gain the velocity distribution,pressure distribution and the separation efficiency.The result of simulation indicate that it appears upper and lower diversion into the inner cylinder of twophased separator,which is different from the conventional one.In the process we found that the swirling turbulence emerged near the wall of the outer cylinder and conic zone,though there were no stagnation and reflow detected on the central axis.Whereas the axial velocity distribution is non-axial symmetric,the axial symmetry was found to the tangential velocity distribution at the same height.In addition, the axial velocity distribution tended to be different with more consistent tangential velocity distribution at the different heights.We have also discovered that with the increase of particle size,the escaping efficiency tends to decrease.Moreover,with the separation efficiency rising,the catch efficiency first increased but then decreased.The separation efficiency of 5 μm particles can be made to reach over 60%,which is indeed a great improvement in comparison with the conventional separator.Thus,it can be concluded that the key factors leading to the improvement of separation efficiency are the increase of movement path and the separation time,as well as the tangential speed difference inside and outside of the cylinder.
