Review and Thinking of Independence Studies in the West

Abstract:Independence,similar to self-supporting,is an important concept in western culture.The studies on independence in the west were reviewed from the aspects of definition,structure and measure,influence factors,and the reflections on the concept.The similarities and differences were also discussed on the basis of the review.The paper argues that(1)independence and self-supporting are different personality constructs emerging in different cultural,economic,and political situations;(2) self-supporting is a vital personality construct in modern times transcended from the traditional Chinese culture;(3)self-supporting and independence are complex personality constructs involving many psychological factors and various fields.
