Abstract:Objective The purpose of this study is to reveal the characteristics of treadmill exercise test induced arrhythmia and the effects of exercise on previous arrhythmia. Methods All cases comprised 4643 consecutive cases referred for treadmill exercise test with standard Bruce protocol (Marqutte CASE 15). The target heart rate is 85% maximal exercise heart rate, while blood pressure and 12 leads electrocardiogram were monitored and recorded before, during exercise and recovery period. Results Totally 680 cases had arrhythmia, including 176 cases previously and 504 cases induced during exercise test or recovery period. There was no gender difference in exercise-induced arrhythmias (P=0.318). The incidence of arrhythmia in positive treadmill exercise test patients (20.8%) was greater than that of negative patients (13.8%), P<0.001. In patients with previous arrhythmia, the proportion of ventricular arrhythmias disappeared during exercise (66.7%) was greater than that of supraventricular arrhythmias (34.0%), P=0.002. Arrhythmia occurred during exercise were frequent than those occurred during recovery period (36.6% vs 41.2%), but there was no significant statistical difference (P>0.05). Conclusion Most of exercise-induced arrhythmias disappeared during recovery period. The electrocardiogram monitoring during recovery period should be emphasized and prolonged to at least 10 minutes.
