Abstract:Taking the Bible as a literary canon as well, there are comparative motives among three child sacrifices at least in the so called Hellenic and Hebrew literature:the Isaac sacrifice of Abraham, the only daughter sacrifice of Jephthah, and the Iphigenia sacrifice of Agamemnon. As Eric Auerbach noted in his The Representation of Reality in Western Literature,in contrast of the simple narrative of the Old Testament which seems out of any sentimentality, the Hellenic literature in the wake of Homer rather incline to relieve the tension with exaggerated rhetoric. However, fiction is not strange to the Bible which instead, prefers to initiate a"historical fiction"in changing rhetoric into realistic narration.Poetic or realistic,it may prove that the Bible is not second to Homeric Epics even on the pure literary evaluations.
