Abstract:The electrochemistry of films made from cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) containing C-60 or C-70 on a glassy carbon electrode was investigated in an aqueous solution containing 0.5 mol/L KCl, and two couples of reduction/reoxidation peaks for C-60 or C-70 were found in the potential range from 0 to -1.0 V. Electrochemically stable fullerene modified electrodes were produced in an aqueous solution. Furthermore, the fullerenes/DDAB film modified electrodes show electrocatalysis towards reduction of chloroacetic acid and trichloroacetic acid, indicating that fullerenes in the films are excellent electron-transfer mediators.

Abstract:C121 and C121/didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) film modified electrodes have been constructed and their electrochemistry has been studied. In the acetonitrile solution containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, the C121 films show three couples of relatively stable redox peaks corresponding to three two-electron transfer processes involving reduction of two fullerene units in the dimers. In an aqueous solution containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium bromide, the C121 films display an irreversible reduction peak, whereas the C121/DDAB films display two couples of quasi-reversible redox peaks with the splitting first peak, and the C121/DDAB films have good reversibility and stability in the aqueous solution due to existence of DDAB. All of these experimental results indicate that voltammetric behaviors of the C121 films are different from those of C60 films due to different structures though C121 is carbon-bridged C60 dimer, and the common characteristics are that their electrochemical behaviors are dependent on the nature of solvent and cation of supporting electrolyte. Furthermore, electrocatalysis of H2O2 at the C121/DDAB films was explored in the aqueous solution, which indicates that C121 is a good electron-transfer mediator.
Studies on Metallofullerene (dy@c82) Embedded in a DDAB Film in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of metallofullerene (Dy@C-82) in didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) films deposited on glassy carbon, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) gold crystals, and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes in aqueous solution was investigated in detail. Four pairs of reversible redox peaks were observed, and for the first time, these peaks were characterized by vis/NIR spectroscopy. Different from previous fullerene/cationic lipid modified electrodes, one oxidation and three reduction processes were observed. The stability of Dy@C-82 and its ions in the film toward air was detected by measuring its cyclic voltammogram after holding the potentials for 10 s, followed by introducing 10 mu L of air to the solution. Dy@C-82 and its first three anions are stable toward air and water, while some chemical reactions take place when the third anion is further reduced in the film. Dy@C-82(+) is less stable than Dy@C-82(-) toward water and air. The electrochemical processes were measured in different electrolytes, which showed pronounced anionic dependence on either its cation or anions. The electrochemical processes were also monitored using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and from the result a possible electron-transfer mechanism of a Dy@C-82/DDAB electrode in aqueous solution was presented. It showed that the anions of Dy@C-82 were bound to the DDA(+) cation in the film, while the anions of electrolyte diffused into the film to compensate the positive charges when a cation of Dy@C-82 was generated.

Abstract:Two inclusion complexes, i.e. C60-dimethyl-(β-cyclodextrin) and C60-[dimethyl-(β-cyclodextrin)]2, have been prepared by kneading and characterized by UV-vis and IR spectroscopy. Electrochemical behavior of their films has been studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CVs are quite different from those for a pristine C60 film. The CVs of films of both complexes are similar in a mixed solvent solution of water and acetonitrile (3:2, v/v) containing tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate as supporting electrolyte. These CVs are characterized by one two-electron electroreduction peak and two one-electron electro-oxidation peaks when the rate is above 0.1 V s−1. The one electroreduction peak of both films splits into two peaks if the potential scan rate is lower than 0.1 V s−1.

Abstract:The aqueous electrochemistry of Dy@C-82 films and membrane films of didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) encapsulated with DY@C-82 has been studied systematically. The redox responses of the Dy@C-82 films depend strongly on the supporting electrolytes. In the aqueous solution of tetrabutylammonium bromide, we obtained four cathodic waves at 0.040, -0.40, -1.04, and -1.35 V, and one oxidation wave at +0.31 V. For the membrane films of Dy@C-82-DDAB film, however, the well-defined redox responses in water are relatively independent of the supporting electrolytes because of the encapsulation and fine dispersion of Dy@C-82 in the DDAB membrane. Reversible reduction and oxidation waves were obtained even in the pH 7.0 buffer solution containing KCl, which is associated with the charge balance of the DDAB ions with the ions of Dy@C-82. It was found that DY@C-82 in the DDAB membrane promotes the encapsulation of hemoglobin (Hb) and Hb can catalyze the reduction of DY@C-82. Significantly enhanced electrocatalytic reduction of O-2 by Hb in the presence of Dy@C-82 has also been demonstrated. Here Dy@C-82 acts an electron-transfer mediator, which points to the potential application of metallofullerenes in biochemical sensing. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of a C60/MWCNT (multi-walled carbon nanotube) film cast on GC electrode in acetonitrile solution was investigated. Repeated cyclic voltammetric scans transformed the precursor to a C60–MWCNT composite film which exhibited reversible electron-transfer reactions and superpose the redox feature of the bare MWCNTs with monotonic charge injection over the whole potential range. This is in contrast to both C60 film and peapods of C60 inside carbon nanotubes but resembles the behavior of C60 dissolved in organic solutions. The formation and structure of the C60–MWCNT composite films were studied by UV–Vis, FT-IR, and TEM.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of trimetallic nitride clusterfullerene (Sc3N@C78) embedded in films of the cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes in aqueous solution was investigated. Four pairs of reversible redox peaks were observed in the potential range between +0.6 and −0.9 V vs. SCE. Different to the electrochemistry of pristine Sc3N@C78 in organic solution, the first reduction is a one-electron rather than simultaneous two-electron process because of the strong binding between DDA+ and the monoanion of Sc3N@C78. The generated radial monoanion, dianion and trianion of Sc3N@C78 are stable during continuous potential cycling, while some chemical reactions take place when the third anion is further reduced in the films. The cyclic voltammograms of Sc3N@C78/DDAB films checked at different temperatures pointed to strong temperature dependence. The electrochemical processes were also measured in different electrolytes, which showed pronounced anionic dependence and no cathodic dependence on either the cation or anions present. A possible electron-transfer mechanism of a Sc3N@C78/DDAB film was presented.

Abstract:The ability of a C60 derivative (1) to form Langmuir monolayer at air/water interface was investigated by using surface pressure vs. molecular area isotherm and Brewster angle microscopy (BAM). The monolayers were transferred on quartz, mica and ITO substrates with LB technique, respectively, and characterized using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and UV–vis spectra. These LB films were studied employing cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solutions of Fe(CN)63−. The results show that a true monolayer of compound 1 is formed in the spreading process and that no three-dimensional aggregates are formed. The cyclic voltammetric behaviors show that the LB film of the C60 derivative may exhibit some ionic charge-selective electron-transfer phenomena, implying that LB film of C60 derivative bearing appropriate group may be used as electrode modifier.

Abstract:In this paper, the formation in situ of an electrodeposited film of (TBA+)n(Cn−60) (n = 1 to 3) on a microelectrode and its voltammetric behavior have been studied. The method consists of electroreducing C60 in a mixed solvent of acetonitrile and xylene (1:6 v/v) and a supporting electrolyte of 0.08 M TBAPF6 at a potential sufficiently negative to generate C3−60 anion, followed by deposition of (TBA+)3(C3−60) on a microdisk electrode. Deposition conditions of the film and some of its characteristics were investigated. The standard surface electron-transfer rate constants k0 and electron-transfer coefficient α of the two stripping reactions were determined.

Abstract:The films of an amphiphilic C-60-EDTA (C(60)EA) and its tetramethyl ester (C60EM), prepared both by drop-coating and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, were studied by cyclic voltammetry in acetonitrile solutions of tetra-12-butylammonium hexafluorophosphate as the supporting electrolyte. The drop-coated film of C60EM displayed four pairs of redox peaks, which vanished after a few cycles due to the film dissolution. For the LB film of C60EM, three irreversible reduction peaks were observed. Both the drop-coated and the LB film of C(60)EA showed two irreversible reduction peaks.

Abstract:Stable and highly conductive self-n-doped fullerene ammonium halides are promising optoelectronic materials. It is necessary to thoroughly understand their structure-function relationship and to develop their applications. Here, the assembly behaviors of the self-n-doped fullerene ammonium halides, as well as the functional areas in the well-developed 2D-3D lamellar structures in their ordered aggregates are systematically characterized using comprehensive methods. In the self-assembly, the solvation effect of DMSO promotes the flexibility of side-chains and drives the formation of fullerene ammonium halides into ordered bilayer structures. The conductivity-active area, which contains tightly packed halide anions sandwiched between fullerenes, provides good electron transfer property. Remarkably, residual DMSO in the side-chain area can induce aqueous Pd precursor into the highly conductive framework. After reduction, Pd nanoparticles are immobilized in the confined spaces within the conductive support. The resulting electrode can be used to electrooxidize ethanol. This study provides a facile solution strategy for the in situ fabrication of electrocatalysts on working electrodes, which can be applied in direct alcohol fuel cells.

Abstract:The microdisk electrode voltammetric behaviors of C-60 are reported in this communication. This was accomplished by use of a mixed solvent system as Acetonotrile:Xylene=1:4 and a supporting electrolyte as 0.1 mol center dot L-1 Bu4NPF6 center dot Au, Pt and Hg (Pt) were used as working electrode. In this new conditions, the successive six step reduction of C60 were obtained at below 15 degrees C. It was found that the former five steps are all the single electron reversible reduction, but behaviors of the sixth steps are like EC' processes. Several electrochemical data were determined.

Abstract:Elctrochemical behavior of C60-γ-cyclodextrin (1:1)/Nafion and C60-γ-cyclodextrin (1:2)/ Nafion Chemically Modified Electrodes has been studied in an aqueous solution. A couple of reversible surface-confined one-electron-transfer electroreduction waves were detected by cyclic voltammetry. When scanning between -0. 20 and -0. 80 V, experiments indicate that the chemically modifide electrodes have good stability and reproducibility. It is found that the chemically modified electrodes have electrocatalytic activity to some biomolecules such as hemoglobin,cytochrome c,hemin and deoxyribonucleic acid in the medium of 0. 10 mol/L KCl.

Abstract:Solution-cast films of the major isomer of Dy@C-82 (Dy@C-82(I)) have been studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in acetonitrile. The films are found to display pronounced and stable redox responses in solution. The reduction/reoxidation processes exhibit large splittings between the first two reduction and reoxidation waves. However, a pair of reversible oxidation and rereduction waves is observed after the reoxidation of a reduced film. The characteristics and the inter-relationship of these waves are uncovered by the CV technique, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and UV/Vis-NIR spectra. A possible mechanism is proposed for the film electrode processes, which emphasizes the redox-induced structural reorganization of the metallofullerene film by the incorporation and expulsion of electrolyte ions into and out of the film. The influence of the counter ion diffusivity and the ion-pair stability on the electrochemical activity of the metallofullerene film has also been indicated.

Abstract:Coarse grained simulations were adopted to describe the encapsulation and dispersion of fullerene C 60 by hexaoxyethylene dodecyl ether (C 12 E 6 ) surfactants. The self-organised structures of C 12 E 6 molecules in water were captured and the characteristics of micelles composed of different number of C 12 E 6 molecules were analysed. We found that C 60 molecules alone or in clusters can spontaneously translate into the hydrophobic core of micelles. One monomeric C 60 can explore the hydrocarbon-chain region of the micelles with different sizes, and two different preferential locations of C 60 are observed. The small C 60 clusters can disaggregate after entering the micelle. Larger C 60 clusters can penetrate into the micelle as solid-like nanoparticles, although they are partially disaggregated. When investigating the self-assembly of C 12 E 6 surfactants and C 60 molecules, we found that it is very difficult to disperse C 60 in the micelle monomolecularly. At high molar ratio of C 12 E 6 /C 60 , colloidal nanoC 60 aggregates form with C 12 E 6 surfactants adsorbed on the surface. Our simulations provide an explanation for the different observations in fullerene solubilization in micellar solutions and give a guideline for further solubilization of pristine fullerene or small hydrophobic molecules with surfacant micelles, which is helpful for the design of new micelle-based delivery vehicles.

Abstract:Redox processes of C60@SWNT and C70@SWNT modified electrodes corresponding to electron transfer reactions of C60 and C70 inside single-wall carbon nanotubes have been firstly observed. Three pairs of reversible electro-reduction waves have been obtained in acetonitrile containing tetrabutylammonium cation as supporting electrolyte. The influencing factors on electrochemistry of fullerene peapod modified electrodes have been investigated. The results suggest that voltammetric behavior of C60@SWNT or C70@SWNT is dependent on the nature of the supporting electrolyte and the solvent system.
