Abstract:Cicero represents the efforts by the Roman philosophers who tried to create their own philosophy by means of re-reading Greek philosophy. The new Roman philosophy exhibits its own originality which differs from the Greek one and is more akin to modern philosophical thinking. Thus more attention should be directed to this much-neglected style of wisdom.In Hellenistic-Roman philosophies, one interesting phenomenon can be observed: many have passed over Plato and Aristotle and traced back to Socrates in order to re-find the ″orthodoxy″ of philosophy. Stoics did that, and so did the Academics. Cicero played his role in this line of Socratic-orthodoxy discovery. When Cicero claimed that Socrates was the first man who turned philosophy from heaven to the city, he was not just describing some ordinary ″philosophical turn″, rather, he was pointing out the real nature of philosophy: to be the reflection on politics and the moral good.The philosophy school that followed this orthodoxy, as Cicero believed, was the Academic philosophers who pursued ″probable truth″ rather than absolute truth.The former was attained through dialectic examination of opinions and thus belonged eventually in the domain of opinion, sufficient, however, to guide life, while the latter was not attainable and useless to life.Probable truth is the truth that has reasonable apology or justification. This wording reminds people of a forensic rhetoric. Actually, rhetoric politics is another part of the new feature of Roman philosophy founded by Cicero. Rhetoric aims at persuasion.Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato criticized rhetoric art fiercely because it did not resort to truth. Plato did have his own art of speaking, namely dialectics. But Cicero emphasized more on the public speech in the court and the senate, for it brought benefits for the commonwealth. Roman republican philosophers believed that philosophy must serve the real reforms in political life, rather than the mere theoretical perfection.The change of focus on probable truth and public rhetoric entails other profound changes in the philosophical thinking. For instance, Cicero re-ordered the Telos in favor of the life-form of practical statesmen, rather than that of speculative philosophers. Meanwhile, he stressed more on the internal relation between natural law and custom, avoiding the idealistic orientation in the justification of moral norms.Cicero’s contribution is significant, for since then both Greek idealistic philosophy and Roman rhetoric philosophy have constituted distinct and coexistent sub-traditions within the Western tradition of political philosophy.
