Abstract:In this study,an opensourced CFD software OpenFOAM is used to simulate boundary layer in wind tunnel.The simulation revealed that it is suitable to use an opensourced software like OpenFOAM to conduct a CWE(Computational Wind Engineering) research.Also,this study gave some discussions about the boundary layer characteristics revealed by the simulation results.

Abstract:This study proposes an CIP (Constraint Interpolation Profile) viscous flow model that couples the Finite Element Method for structural deformation, to investigate the wave interaction with a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. A modified ghost-cell immersed boundary method is adopted to achieve an accurate simulation of the fluid-structure interaction. After validation by published experimental data, the model is used to study the interaction between regular waves and a fluid-filled membrane submerged breakwater. The excess internal pressure, vorticity field, elastic modulus and structural responses are analyzed. The results show that, in lower excess internal pressure, the wave reflection, vortex shedding and energy dissipation are more significant. Be-sides, through the analysis of displacement and velocity distribution, three different vibration modes of the membrane structure are identified at different wave frequencies.

Abstract:In this study,computational fluid dynamics(CFD) simulation is compared with results from the wind tunnel test.The good agreement of wind profile between simulation and wind tunnel test confirms the validation and precision of the CFD simulation.A comparative study is made of the impact of Y+ on the simulation results between CFD simulation and wind tunnel test.The study reveals that validation of CFD simulation relies on fine grid system near the wall.A numerical experiment which modeled an infinitely long wind tunnel is conducted using CFD and the profile of a self-sustaining equilibrium atmosphere boundary layer is obtained.The result shows the simulated wind profile differs from those commonly used in computational wind engineering.Thus,a further study is necessary to analyze the nature of the difference.

Abstract:The reproduced planetary boundary layer (PBL) wind is commonly applied in downscaled simulations using commercial CFD codes with Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence modeling. When using the turbulent inlets calculated by numerical weather prediction models (NWP), adjustments of the turbulence eddy viscosity closures and wall function formulations are concerned with maintaining the fully developed wind profiles specified at the inlet of CFD domains. The impact of these related configurations is worth discussing in engineering applications, especially when commercial codes restrict the internal modifications. This study evaluates the numerical performances of open-source OpenFOAM 2.3.0 and commercial Fluent 17.2 codes as supplementary scientific comparisons. This contribution focuses on the modified turbulence closures to incorporate turbulent profiles produced from mesoscale PBL parameterizations and the modified wall treatments relating to the roughness length. The near-ground flow features are evaluated by selecting the flat terrains and the classical Askervein benchmark case. The improvement in near-ground wind flow under the downscaled framework shows satisfactory performance in the open-source CFD platform. This contributes to engineers realizing the micro-siting of wind turbines and quantifying terrain-induced speed-up phenomena under the scope of wind-resistant design.

Abstract:In the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation for building structures, it is important to generate a stable atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow field that meets the standards. In this paper, the wind profile, turbulence intensity, and wind velocity power spectrum in the target region of a numerical wind tunnel were accurately simulated by a hybrid method. With the numerical simulation software FLUENT, the hybrid simulation method was implemented. In the hybrid simulation method, the wind field was simulated by setting the roughness element in the upstream of the model, adding random disturbance, and setting the circulation surface. The influences of simulation parameters (such as roughness element and random number parameters) and FLUENT solution methods on the flow field results were studied. The results show that the influence range of the roughness element on turbulence intensity is approximately 6 times its physical height. The turbulence intensity is positively correlated with the standard deviation of random numbers and negatively correlated with the assignment height. Finally, the wind fields for different terrains satisfying the standards were obtained in numerical wind tunnels. A simulation of the wind pressure on an inflatable membrane structure was illustrated. The comparison between numerical and experimental results shows a good accordance, which indicates a desirable potential in practical application.

Analysis on Capabilities of Density-Based Solvers Within Openfoam to Distinguish Aerothermal Variables in Diffusion Boundary Layer

Abstract:Open source field operation and manipulation (OpenFOAM) is one of the most prevalent open source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. It is very convenient for researchers to develop their own codes based on the class library toolbox within OpenFOAM. In recent years, several density-based solvers within OpenFOAM for supersonic/hypersonic compressible flow are coming up. Although the capabilities of these solvers to capture shock wave have already been verified by some researchers, these solvers still need to be validated comprehensively as commercial CFD software. In boundary layer where diffusion is the dominant transportation manner, the convective discrete schemes’ capability to capture aerothermal variables, such as temperature and heat flux, is different from each other due to their own numerical dissipative characteristics and from viewpoint of this capability, these compressible solvers within OpenFOAM can be validated further. In this paper, firstly, the organizational architecture of density-based solvers within OpenFOAM is analyzed. Then, from the viewpoint of the capability to capture aerothermal variables, the numerical results of several typical geometrical fields predicted by these solvers are compared with both the outcome obtained from the commercial software Fastran and the experimental data. During the computing process, the Roe, AUSM+(Advection Upstream Splitting Method), and HLLC(Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact) convective discrete schemes of which the spatial accuracy is 1st and 2nd order are utilized, respectively. The compared results show that the aerothermal variables are in agreement with results generated by Fastran and the experimental data even if the 1st order spatial precision is implemented. Overall, the accuracy of these density-based solvers can meet the requirement of engineering and scientific problems to capture aerothermal variables in diffusion boundary layer.

Abstract:The traditional atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel model test practice employs wind fields, the flow characteristics of which are in accordance with the empirical formulae of the atmospheric turbulence presented in Codes of Practice and monographs. However, the empirical formulae presented in Codes of Practice and monographs cannot truthfully reflect the high variations of the realistic atmospheric turbulence which sometimes aggravates wind effects on structures. Based on model tests conducted in a multiple-fan actively controlled wind tunnel, it is found that most wind effects on large cooling towers change monotonically with the increase in free-stream turbulence, and the model test results are more unfavorable for a flow field of low turbulence intensity than for a flow field of high turbulence intensity with respect to the measured coherences. Thus, a new atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel simulation methodology for wind effects on circular cylindrical structures is proposed to overcome the deficiency of the traditional atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel model tests. The new simulation methodology includes the simulation of two realistic atmospheric boundary layer flow fields with the highest and the lowest turbulence intensities in the wind tunnel and the envelopment of model test results obtained in the two flow fields (e.g. the mean and fluctuating wind pressure distributions, the power spectral density, the coherence function, and the correlation coefficient). The superiority of the new atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel simulation methodology over the traditional model test practice is demonstrated by comparing the model test results with the full-scale measurement data.

Abstract:Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulation is the workhorse for engineering problems owing to affordable computational cost. Although wall functions/models are commonly used in RANS simulation to model the boundary-layer flows, their limitation and validity range have been inadequately addressed in the literature, and we demonstrate that an oversight of which may significantly affect the simulated results. Therefore, this study re-examines the limitation and validity range of three specific wall models (i.e. logarithmic law of wall, Spalding's law of wall and an omega-based wall roughness model) based on a systematic RANS study of turbulent unidirectional and oscillatory boundary-layer flows. We discover several limitations of the latter two wall models, including singularity problem, inaccurate fitting to Nikuradse's data and unexpected validity range of the wall distance and wall roughness. We then propose a modified omega-based wall model, which gives rise to more accurate prediction and is suitable for a much wider range of wall roughness than the original model. The conclusions drawn on the plane-wall boundary-layer flows are transferrable to the RANS simulation of other flows (e.g. bluff-body flows). Finally, we provide a flow chart to guide selection of appropriate wall boundary conditions for RANS simulation of unidirectional and oscillatory boundary-layer flows.

Abstract:To investigate the impacts of cylinder extended length, rotation angle and wave incidence angle on hydrodynamic characteristics, the numerical simulation of an internal solitary wave (ISW) interaction with a submerged extended cylinder is conducted by using OpenFOAM. The accordance between the experimental data and numerical simulation forces on the isolated cylinder shows that the OpenFOAM-based numerical model can deal with the ISW-submerged cylinder interaction. The distributions of forces, maximum dynamic pressure forces and flow field around the submerged extended cylinder are discussed to reveal the hydrodynamic characteristics of submerged cylinder under the ISW action. The horizontal forces on an extended cylinder are found to change from increasing to decreasing with the increase in extended length when the extended length is 2.5 times the cylinder diameter. The forces on the cylinder are sensitive to the change in the rotation angle. Both the horizontal loads and the evolution of the wave profile are easily affected by the change in incidence angle. The vortices shedding around the cylinder varies with the change of wave incidence angle. Investigation of the ISW and a submerged cylinder interactions can help to understand the mechanism of structural damage in internal wave ocean environment.

Abstract:The Beddoes-Leishman model (B-L model) was widely applied in the airfoil's dynamic loads prediction. But the need for numerous experimental parameters greatly limits its application range. In this study, numerical simulation was used to simulate the wind tunnel experiments of airfoils to obtain the required parameters. Take the S809 and NACA0012 airfoils as examples, Fluent software was used to calculate the static parameters, and dynamic mesh technology was used to simulate the sinusoidal oscillation wind tunnel experiments of airfoils to obtain the dynamic parameters. Use the modified B-L model with the obtained parameters to predict the dynamic stall characteristics of the airfoils. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental data of the wind tunnel, which means that it is promising to use numerical simulation to calculate the parameters required by the B-L model to predict the dynamic stall characteristics of an airfoil. It provides a simpler and more feasible method for predicting the dynamic loads of the blade of wind turbines and tidal current turbines.

Abstract:The 3-dimensional flow field of an oscillatory flow reactor(OFR)with orifice ring baffles,which had a complete structure consisting of five channels including inlet and outlet structure, was simulated with computational fluid dynamics(CFD)employing the unstructured mesh elements such as tetrahedrons,prisms and pyramids.The computation was implemented by using the commercial CFD package CFX 10.0.The information about the structures of flow fields in the standard cells,the top cell and the bottom cell was obtained under a series of oscillatory Reynolds numbers(Re_0)with and without net flow.A comparison of the flow fields between the conic ring baffle OFR and the orifice baffle OFR was carried out.

Abstract:A numerical simulation model based on an open source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) package-Open Field Operation and Manipulation (OpenFOAM) has been developed to study highly nonlinear steady and unsteady free surface flows. A two-fluid formulation is used in this model and the free surface is captured using the classical Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The incompressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method on unstructured polyhedral cells. Both steady and unsteady free surface flows are simulated, which include: (1) a submerged NACA0012 2-D hydrofoil moving at a constant speed, (2) the Wigley hull moving at a constant speed, (3) numerical wave tank, (4) green water overtopping a fixed 2-D deck, (5) green water impact on a fixed 3-D body without or with a vertical wall on the deck. The numerical results obtained have been compared with the experimental measurements and other CFD results, and the agreements are satisfactory. The present numerical model can thus be used to simulate highly nonlinear steady and unsteady free surface flows.

Abstract:In this research, a CFD solver is developed for solving the 2D/3D compressible flow problem: the finite volume method based on multi-block structural grids is used to solve the compressible Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS). Included in the methodology are multiple high-order reconstruction schemes, such as the 3rd-order MUSCL (Monotone Upstreamcentered Schemes for Conservation Laws), 5th-order WENO (Weight Essentially Non-Oscillatory), and 5th-order MP (Monotonicity-Preserving) schemes. Of the variety of turbulence models that are embedded, this solver is mainly based on the shear stress transport model (SST), which is compatible with OpenMP/MPI parallel algorithms. This research uses the CFD solver to conduct steady-state flow simulation for a two-dimensional supersonic inlet/isolator, incorporating these high-precision reconstruction schemes to accurately capture the shock wave/expansion wave interaction and shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction (SWTBLI), among other effects. By comparing the 2D/3D computation results of the same inlet configuration, it is found that the 3D effects of the side wall cannot be ignored due to the existing strong lateral flow near the corner. To obtain a more refined turbulence simulation, the commercial software ANSYS Fluent 18.0 is used to carry out the detached eddy simulation (DES) and the large eddy simulation (LES) of the same supersonic inlet, so as to reveal the flow details near the separation area and boundary layers.
Wind Tunnel Modelling of Atmospheric Bondary Layer

Abstract:The scale effects in wind tunnel modelling tests are studied. It is shown that the scales of roughness and that of boundary layer thickness in a wind tunnel modelling test should be the same, and be carefully selected because it is the most sensitive scale. It is also shown that the velocity distribution can be best simulated if the scale of the boundary layer thickness is between 200 and 400. The scale effects for the pressure distribution on a bluff body are also examined.

Abstract:This work deals with solving tasks of Computational Fluid Dynamics through the use of open source software OpenFOAM and comparing results from inhouse software and commercial software Ansys Fluent. The task involves steady, compressible, inviscid, non-heat conducting flow through convergent-divergent nozzle. Different boundary conditions are applied, causing subsonic or supersonic outflow. The compared data consists of Mach numbers distributions along the centerline of the nozzle. The verification is done by comparing simulations for quasi-one-dimensional, two-dimensional and three-dimensional solutions.

Abstract:Free surface flow interaction with an elastic plate is simulated by a Constraint Interpolation Profile-based Model. A finite difference method (FDM) based on the CIP method is used for solving the flow field in a fixed staggered Cartesian grid and a finite element method (FEM) is used for dealing with the structural deformation. Beside, a volume of fluid type method, the THINC/SW (Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing with Slope Weighting) method is used to capture the free surface and a Ghost-Cell Immersed Boundary Method is adopted to couple the fluid and structure interaction. To verify the model, a rolling tank sloshing with a thin elastic plate is computed. Predicted results are found to be more agreement with the experimental results than reference data. Furthermore, two other benchmark experiments are tested, including an elastic gate deformation in dam break and a hanging elastic beam in a shallow oil sloshing. The computed results agree well with published literatures. It validates the reliability of the present solver to deal with nonlinear fluid-structure interactions.

Abstract:Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique has been widely used in simulating dynamic responses of offshore floating wind turbines under excitations of prescribed wave and wind loads. In the simulation, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is generally employed to capture the free surface of the liquid, which illustratively shows the evolution of waves. The stresses at the free surface are not explicitly modeled in the VOF method, which challenge the establishment of the equilibrium marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) throughout the computational domain. Given the importance of the generation of the MABL in a CFD simulation of offshore wind turbines, methods for establishing sustainable wind profiles in a simulation based on the VOF method should be systematically investigated. In the present study, a virtual body force method is developed to maintain the horizontally homogeneous MABL in the VOF-based CFD simulation. The proposed method is quantitatively verified through a simulation of the equilibrium MABL with the sheared wind profile.

Abstract:Wavelet analysis is used to study the boundary layer turbulence simulated in the environmental wind tunnel, including the flow on flat and urban surface boundary layer. The intermittent structure and cascade dissipation of turbulence are explored. The experimental results indicate that the turbulence behavior of the surface boundary layer possesses strongly intermittent characteristic. Therefore in numerical and physical simulation of surface layer, this intermittent time scale and relevant geometrical scale must be considered.

Abstract:It can be deduced from the governing equations of fluid flow that shallow-water wave in the open channel and air disturbance wave follow the same pattern of propagation.Thus complicated aerodynamic phenomenon could be simulated directly by the water flow in an open channel.The experimental results of water flow in the convergent-divergent open channel used in the experiment agree with the numerical simulation results of air flow field well,which validates aerodynamic phenomenon can be simulated in the open channel.The same variation of M and Fr number along the flow direction could be concluded in a Laval nozzle and in the open channel with the same shape and sizes separately.Supercritical water flow passing obstacles with the shape of wedge and cylinder can be taken as the expansion-like wave and shock-like wave in its supersonic air-flow counterpart.By changing the outside water level behind the exit of the open channel,the hydraulic jump waves are produced in the open channel to well simulate shock waves occurred inside Laval nozzle under corresponding condition.

Abstract:This article researches CFD simulations of the subsonic wind tunnel at Xi'an Jiaotong University's Laboratory of Thermal Turbo-machines. The wind tunnel cross section measures 8008600 mm(2), and the simulations are conducted on a wind tunnel with a 375 mm chord S809 airfoil at the Reynolds number of one million The angles of attack for the 2D airfoil range from 0 to 22 degrees. In another set of 2D simulations, a 750 mm chord airfoil is calculated in open-air with no walls restricting airflow. The pressure fields, flow patterns and lift and drag coefficients are compared with each other to show the blockage effects in the wind tunnel. As the results show, the wind tunnel walls directly cause the flow to stream faster and increase the lift and drag values. Another consequence of this channeled flow is that the separated area expands. Moreover, the commencement of the separation also occurs at a smaller angle of attack.
