Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:A wavelength Converter is presented that is made out of a semiconductor optical amplifier and an optical bandpass filter. Error-free inverted wavelength conversion is demonstrated at a bitrate of 80 Gbit/s. This approach can be exploited at higher bitrates. A clear open eye indicating error-free wavelength conversion at 160 Gbit/s is also presented. This wavelength converter has a simple configuration and allows photonic integration.

Abstract:We demonstrate an error-free 160 Gb/s SOA-based optical wavelength converter. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to switch 80 Gb/s data-packets all- optically. The optical wavelength converter consists of an SOA and an optical filter. Assisting by an optical bandpass filter, an effectively recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in an SOA, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. The integrated optical flip-flop based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We show that the integrated flip-flop is capable to control an optical wavelength conversion up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:We present a monolithically integrated all-optical wavelength converter. The converter consists of four semiconductor optical amplifiers for four separate inputs and an arrayed-waveguide grating. Error-free wavelength conversion with reasonable penalties for a 27 -1 pseudorandom binary sequence was shown for a single input 80-Gb/s signal. The device exploits cross-gain/phase modulation in a single amplifier and selects with a filter the blue-chirped spectrum of the new wavelength signal in order to speed up the device response. This device has a dimension of 1.7times3.5 mm2 and it can be operated to convert simultaneously four 80-Gb/s wavelength channels

Abstract:We present a high-speed optical wavelength converter that is capable of converting the data to the same wavelength using a single semiconductor optical amplifier. Error-free wavelength conversion is demonstrated at a bit-rate of 40 Gb/s. The wave length converter utilizes a counterpropagation scheme assisted by blue-detuned optical filtering technology. The blue-detuned optical filter shortens the recovery time of the wavelength converter, from initial 100 ps down to less than 6 ps, ensuring 40-Gb/s operation. The counterpropagation scheme shows a slow gain saturation time, which becomes a determinant factor for the operating speed of the proposed system. This wavelength converter is constructed by using commercially available fiber pigtailed components. It has a simple configuration and allows photonic integration.

Abstract:All-optical wavelength conversion for 2×11.64 GBaud adaptively-modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (AM-OFDM) signals with QPSK/16QAM formats is experimentally demonstrated in a silicon waveguide. The AM-OFDM signal with partly higher- (and lower-) order formats on lower- (and higher-) frequency subcarriers has better overall conversion performance in receiving optical signal-to-noise ratio and power penalty. In comparison with the OFDM-QPSK signal, at the BER of 3.8×10-3, the bit rate increases 11.64 Gbit/s per channel almost without conversion power penalty increased by replacing the QPSK sequence with the 16QAM sequence on half subcarriers.

Abstract:On-the-fly all-optical header processing and control signal generation were simultaneously realized using a dual-wavelength injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode. The special two-level input control signal was generated by direct modulation of a distributed feedback laser. The header processing rate is 2.5 Gb/s, the payload data rate is 10 Gb/s, and the packet length is 25.6 ns. The switching ratio for the switched control signals measured spectrally was improved from 3 dB to over 20 dB by using a polarizer. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a simple, efficient, and cost-effective all-optical wavelength converter using injection-induced wavelength switching in widely tunable V-cavity laser. When an external signal beam is injected at a wavelength corresponding to one of the sidemodes with a small detuning of about 0.1 nm, the lasing wavelength is switched from the original main mode to the side mode. By filtering out the main mode of the V-cavity laser, a data-inverted wavelength conversion is achieved. This wavelength converter can offer a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) channel-to-channel conversion with converted signal approximately at 200 GHz away from the input signal. A 2.5 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) conversion is experimentally demonstrated with an extinction ratio over 4 dB and SMSR of 36 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength routing of 80 Gb/s data packets without using electronic control. The system consists of an optical wavelength converter and a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two coupled lasers, exhibiting single-mode operation, having a 35 dB contrast ratio between the states, and switching its state in about 2 us. The wavelength converter is optically controlled by the optical flip-flop. We show that the optical set and reset pulses can force the optical flip-flop to switch its continuous-wave output light between two specific wavelength positions. The output light feeds the wavelength converter, which, in turn, converts the data packet into the flip-flop's output wavelength, causing the data packet to be routed into a specific port.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion for an optical packet with an optically multiplexed 40-Gbit/s payload and a 2.5-Gbit/s label has been demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge in an optical-label-switched network. The power penalties caused by wavelength conversion for the 40-Gbit/s payload and the 2.5-Gbit/s label are 1.1 and 2.3 dB, respectively. We have also demonstrated that the optical packet is successfully transmitted over two hops with a record transmission distance of 200 km.

Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The counter-propagation configuration eliminates the pump data light, enable the wavelength converter to have the capability of converting the same wavelength. The blue-detuned optical filter shortens the recovery time of the wavelength converter, from initial 100 ps down to less than 6 ps, ensuring 40 Gb/s operation. In contrast to the ultra-fast gain saturation time in the co-propagation scheme, the counter-propagation scheme shows a slow gain saturation time, which becomes a determinant factor for the operating speed of the proposed system. The experimental results show that the slow gain saturation time can be cancelled by using the delayed-interferometer. Our results can also be applied to the other counter-propagation SOA-based optical switches. This wavelength converter is constructed by using commercially available fiber pigtailed components. It has a simple configuration and allows photonic integration.
