Abstract:We discuss the Padé approximation to the ππ scattering amplitudes in one-loop chiral perturbation theory.The approximation restores unitarity and can reproduce the correct resonance poles, but the approximation violates crossing symmetry and produces spurious poles on the complex s plane and therefore plagues its predictions in some cases.However we find that one virtual state in the IJ=20 channel may have physical relevance.

Abstract:The background magnetic-field formalism of lattice QCD has been used recently to calculate the magnetic polarizability of the charged pion. These nf=2+1 numerical simulations are electroquenched, such that the virtual sea-quarks of the QCD vacuum do not interact with the background field. To understand the impact of this, we draw on partially quenched chiral perturbation theory. In this case, the leading term proportional to 1/Mπ arises at tree level from L4. To describe the results from lattice QCD, while maintaining the exact leading terms of chiral perturbation theory, we introduce a Padé approximant designed to reproduce the slow variation observed in the lattice QCD results. Two-loop contributions are introduced to assess the systematic uncertainty associated with higher-order terms of the expansion. Upon extrapolation, the magnetic polarizability of the charged pion at the physical pion mass is found to be βπ±=-1.70(14)stat(25)syst×10-4 fm3, in good agreement with the recent experimental measurement.

Abstract:The naive use of higher-order perturbation theory leads to the left-hand cut integrals in ππ dispersion relations [Phys. Lett. B 536 (2002) 59; B 549 (2002) 362; Nucl. Phys. A 695 (2001) 273] to be divergent. This problem is discussed and solved. We point out that the Adler zero condition imposes three constraints on the dispersion relations. The σ pole position is determined using the improved method, Mσ = 483±13 MeV, Γσ = 705±50 MeV. The scattering length parameter is found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental result.

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.

Abstract:Positivity constraints are derived on pion–nucleon scattering amplitudes and their even-order derivatives inside the Mandelstam triangle with the help of dispersion relations. Fairly interesting constraints are obtained on some of the low-energy constants, by a combination of the chiral perturbation theory for heavy baryons and existing fitting results from available pion–nucleon phase shifts at intermediate energies.

Abstract:Abstract We establish a systematic construction of the on-shell amplitude/operator basis for Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in D = 4 spacetime dimensions and with an arbitrary number of flavors N f . For kinematic factors, we employ spinor-helicity variables to construct the soft blocks, which are local amplitudes satisfying the Adler’s zero condition, as well as to take into account the reduction in the kinematic basis due to the Gram determinant, which arises at O(p 10) when the number of multiplicity N in an amplitude becomes large: N > D. For flavor factors, we include group-theoretic relations at small N f , N f ≤ N, which decreases the flavor basis. The result is obtained by adapting the Young tensor method of constructing the operator basis for generic effective field theories to the case of non-linearly realized symmetries. Working in the massless quark limit, we present purely mesonic operators for both even- and odd-parity at O(p 6) and O(p 8) for N = 6 and arbitrary N f , and establish a direct correspondence between the amplitude basis and the operator basis. Furthermore, the redundancy due to the Gram determinant is studied at O(p 10) for N = 6, 8 and 10.

Abstract:In this work, we give a detailed discussion for QCD factorization involved in the complete chirally enhanced power corrections in the heavy quark limit for B decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons. and present some detailed calculations of radiative corrections at the order of alpha (s). We point out that the infrared finiteness of the vertex corrections in the chirally enhanced power corrections requires twist-3 light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of the light pseudoscalar symmetric. However, even in the symmetric condition. there is also a logarithmic divergence from the end points of the twist-3 LCDAs in the hard spectator scattering. We point out that the decay amplitudes of B --> PP predicted by QCD factorization are really free of the renormalization scale dependence, at least at the order of alpha (s). At last, we briefly compare the QCD factorization with the generalized factorization and PQCD method.

Abstract:In this paper, we study nonleptonic charmless B decays to two light pseudoscalar mesons within the frame of QCD factorization, including the contributions from the chirally enhanced power corrections and weak annihilation. Predictions for the CP-averaged branching ratios and CP-violating asymmetries are given. Within the reasonable range of the parameters, we find that our predictions for the branching ratios of B-->PP are consistent with the present experimental data. But because of the logarithmic divergences at the end points in the hard spectator scatterings and weak annihilation, there are still large uncertainties in these predictions.

Abstract:We sketch here an approach to the computation of genaralised parton distributions (GPDs), based upon a rainbow-ladder (RL) truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations and exemplified via the pion's valence dressed-quark GPD, H-pi(v)(x,xi,t). Our analysis focuses on the case of zero skewness, xi = 0, and underlines that the impulse-approximation used hitherto to define the pion's valence dressed-quark GPD is generally invalid owing to omission of contributions from the gluons which bind dressed-qtrirks into the pion. A simple correction enables us to identify a practicable improvement to the approximation for H-pi(v) (x, 0, t), expressed as the Radon transform of a single amplitude. Therewith we obtain results for H-pi(v) (x, 0, t) and the associated impact-parameter dependent distribution, q(pi)(v)(x,vertical bar(B) over right arrow (perpendicular to)vertical bar) which provide a qualitatively sound picture of the pion's dressed-quark structure at an hadronic scale.

Abstract:A bstract Recently, a new set of positivity bounds with t derivatives have been discovered. We explore the generic features of these generalized positivity bounds with loop amplitudes and apply these bounds to constrain the parameters in chiral perturbation theory up to the next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that the generalized positivity bounds give rise to stronger constraints on the $$ {\overline{l}}_i $$ l ̄ i constants, compared to the existing axiomatic bounds. The parameter space of the b i constants is constrained by the generalized positivity bounds to be a convex region that is enclosed for many sections of the total space. We also show that the improved version of these positivity bounds can further enhance the constraints on the parameters. The often used Padé unitarization method however does not improve the analyticity of the amplitudes in the chiral perturbation theory at low energies.

Abstract:For the first time, elastic pion-nucleon scattering is analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order with explicit $\Delta$ degrees of freedom. The analysis is performed within the heavy-baryon expansion as well as in a covariant approach based on an extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. The renormalization of low-energy constants in both chiral approaches is discussed in detail and the explicit expressions to cancel both power-counting breaking as well as decoupling breaking terms are given. The low-energy constants from the $2\pi \bar{N}N$ interaction as well as additional constants from the $\Delta$ sector are reliably constrained by fits to experimental data. The traditional $K$-matrix unitarization is employed in the near threshold region, whereas a complex mass approach is used to extend the applicability of the theory up to the $\Delta$ pole region. Additionally, we estimate a theoretical error based on the truncation of the chiral series as employed in recent analyses of nuclear forces as well as pion-nucleon scattering. The obtained results provide a clear evidence that the explicit inclusion of $\Delta$ degrees of freedom is fundamental to describe pion-nucleon physics at threshold. The resulting predictions for the subthreshold and threshold parameters as well as phase shifts are in excellent agreement with the ones determined by the recent Roy-Steiner analysis of pion-nucleon scattering.

Abstract:We complete the analysis of twist-two generalized parton distributions of the nucleon in one-loop order of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Extending our previous study of the chiral-even isosinglet sector, we give results for chiral-even isotriplet distributions and for the chiral-odd sector. We also calculate the one-loop corrections for the chiral-odd generalized parton distributions of the pion.

Abstract:ππ scattering length in the I=2 channel is calculated within quenched approximation using improved gauge and improved Wilson fermion actions on anisotropic lattices. The results are extrapolated towards the chiral, infinite volume and continuum limit. This result improves our previous result on the scattering length. In the chiral, infinite volume and continuum limit, we obtain a^(2)_0m_π=-0.0467(45), which is consistent with the result from Chiral Perturbation Theory, the experiment and results from other lattice calculations.

Abstract:In an exploratory study, using the tadpole improved clover Wilson quark action on small, coarse and anisotropic lattices, the ππ scattering length in the I=2 channel is calculated within quenched approximation. A new method is proposed which enables us to make chiral extrapolation of our lattice results without calculating the decay constant on the lattice. Finite volume and finite lattice spacing errors are analyzed and the results are extrapolated towards the infinite volume and continuum limit. Comparisons of our lattice results with the new experiment and the results from Chiral Perturbation Theory are made. Good agreements are found.

Abstract:We have systematically calculated the pseudoscalar Goldstone boson and charmed baryon scattering lengths to the third order with heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The scattering lengths can reveal the interaction of KΛc, KΣc, πΩc, etc. For each channel, we take into account of the interaction between the external particle and every possible charmed baryon in the triplet, sextet, and excited sextet. We use dimensional regularization and modified minimal subtraction to get rid of the divergences in the loop-diagram corrections. We notice that the convergence of chiral expansion for most of the channels becomes better after we let the low energy constants absorb the analytic contributions of the loop-diagram corrections and keep the non-analytic terms only.

Abstract:We introduce the Padé-Z2 (PZ) stochastic estimator for calculating determinants and determinant ratios. The estimator is applied to the calculation of fermion determinants from the two ends of the hybrid Monte Carlo trajectories with pseudofermions. Our results on the 83 × 12 lattice with Wilson action show that the statistical errors from the stochastic estimator can be reduced by more than an order of magnitude by employing an unbiased variational subtraction scheme which utilizes the off-diagonal matrices from the hopping expansion. Having been able to reduce the error of the determinant ratios to about 20% with a relatively small number of noise vectors, this may become a feasible algorithm for simulating dynamical fermions in full QCD. We also discuss the application to the density of states in Hamiltonian systems.
