Abstract:In the processes that are used to produce single-walled nanotubes (electric arc, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition), the typical lengths of tangled nanotube bundles reach several tens of micrometers. We report that long nanotube strands, up to several centimeters in length, consisting of aligned single-walled nanotubes can be synthesized by the catalytic pyrolysis of n-hexane with an enhanced vertical floating technique. The long strands of nanotubes assemble continuously from arrays of nanotubes, which are intrinsically long.

Abstract:Centimeter long single-walled carbon nanotube strands synthesized using chemical vapor deposition method were characterized using microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and small-angle X-ray diffraction techniques. The strands are large collections of well-aligned nanotube bundles, which consist of well-arranged single-walled nanotubes in a two-dimensional triangular lattice. The diameter of the single-walled nanotubes varies from 1.1 to 1.7 nm, with domination of the 1.1 nm tubes and the corresponding lattice constant of 1.42 nm.

Abstract:Atomic force microscopy (AFM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy were used to study the assembling structure of thin bundles containing only a few single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The normal close-packed bundles as well as two novel kinds of bundles including spiral bundles and the ribbon-like bundles were observed for both free-standing SWCNTs and SWCNTs on substrates. Molecular mechanics calculation was employed to study the energetic competition between these three types of bundles. It was found that the free-standing spiral bundles and ribbon-like bundles are metastable compared with the close-packed bundles. However, ribbon-like bundles are more likely to be formed on substrates. This indicates that it is not reliable to assess whether the tested nanotube is individual through the height profile of the AFM image.

Abstract:Close-packed bundles of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized in two-stage horizontal floating catalyst system. The MWNTs were assembled into bundles by controlling appropriate parameters in floating catalyst system. Common amorphous carbon layers, which resulted from the pyro-carbon deposition on small diameter carbon nanotubes, were found to be the key reason for the formation of close-packed MWNT bundles after small-diameter MWNTs were attracted together by weak van der Waals attraction.

Abstract:The scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements of individual singole-walled single carbon nanotube (SWNT) have revealed the nature of trigonal warping of SWNTs in the solid-state, The SWNTs are prepared as isolated SWNTs both oxidized followed by amidation in N,N-dimethylformaide (DMF) and in amine surfactant in tetrahydrofuran(THF). The possibility of debundling SWNTs through their interaction with the amide functional group and amine molecules using steric hindrance has been experimentally explored. The measured topological structures of SWNTs in th solid-state differ from simple theoretical predictions and some possible mechanisms of bundling and debundling of SWNTs are discussed. We show that solid-state based characteristics are different from the solution-based characteristics.

Abstract:Pure sp-hybridized linear carbon chains possess unique physical properties of one-dimensional (1D) system. However, linear carbon chains are highly unstable and require to be stabilized within a matrix for direct experimental studies. Here we report a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method to encapsulate and stabilize linear carbon chains (Cn) within vertically aligned SWNTs to form a sp-sp2 hybrid system (Cn@SWNT). Intense Raman signals at ∼1760–1860 cm−1 (L bands) indicate the presence of linear carbon chains within SWNTs. Electron transport of Cn@SWNT bundle exhibits Luttinger-liquid behavior.

Abstract:The production of carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns possessing high strength and toughness remains a major challenge due to the intrinsically weak interactions between bare CNTs. To this end, nanomechanical shear experiments between functionalized bundles of CNTs are combined with multiscale simulations to reveal the mechanistic and quantitative role of nanotube surface functionalization on CNT-CNT interactions. Notably, the in situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) functionalization of CNT bundles by poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-like oligomers is found to enhance the shear strength of bundle junctions by about an order of magnitude compared with bare van der Waals interactions between pristine CNTs. Through multiscale simulations, the enhancement of the shear strength can be attributed to an interlocking mechanism of polymer chains in the bundles, dominated by van der Waals interactions, and stretching and alignment of chains during shearing. Unlike covalent bonds, such synergistic weak interactions can re-form upon failure, resulting in strong, yet robust fibers. This work establishes the significance of engineered weak interactions with appropriate structural distribution to design CNT yarns with high strength and toughness, similar to the design paradigm found in many biological materials.

Abstract:Self-organized long carbon nanotube ribbons consisting of aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes is fabricated using a simple solvent evaporation technique. The geometry of the ribbons is extraordinarily regular with rectangular cross sections, with dimensions of about 50−100-μm wide, 4−12-μm thick, and 100-mm long. The ribbons could find use as electronic cables or in composite materials.

Abstract:Ultra-small single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are successfully fabricated in the channels of zeolite AlPO4-5 (AFI) single crystals by pyrolysis of tripropylamine molecules in the channels. These nanotubes have been observed directly by transmission electron microscopy, as well as by diffuse X-ray scattering and micro-Raman measurements of the nanotube breathing mode. The data consistently indicate a nanotube diameter of as small as 0.4nm, probably at or close to the theoretical limit. These mono-sized small nanotubes perhaps constitute the best example of one-dimensional (1-D) quantum wires. They show novel electronic properties. Investigation of the magnetic and transport properties of single-walled small diameter carbon nanotubes embedded in a zeolite matrix revealed that at temperatures below 20K, 0.4nm tubes exhibit superconducting behavior manifest as an anisotropic Meissner effect, with a superconducting gap and fluctuation super-current. The measured superconducting characteristics display smooth temperature variations owing to 1-D fluctuations, with a mean field superconducting transition temperature of 15K.
Polygonal Spiral of Coil-Shaped Carbon Nanotubules.

Abstract:Coil-shaped coaxial carbon nanotubules are imaged along the coil-axis direction. It has been demonstrated that one pitch of the coil contains 12 straight segments with a joint angle of 30 degrees between each. Each straight segment is composed of coaxial graphitic multilayer tubules with turbostratic stackings between neighboring layers as confirmed by electron diffraction (ED). These experimental results strongly support the models for tubule joints in the presence of pentagon-heptagon pairs. The comparison of ED patterns obtained from adjacent straight segments allows us to study in detail the joint between neighboring tubules. Primary evidence for a toroidal form of a carbon cage is also presented.

Abstract:Bundles of single walled 0.4 nm carbon nanotubes were prepared by chemical vapor deposition using n-hexane as carbon source catalyzed by ferrocene with additives of thiophene at 1373 K. 8 cm long rope of single walled carbon nanotubes with diameters of 0.8-1.18 nm was also synthesized. The products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Abstract:Electron nanodiffraction patterns and high-resolution images from bundles of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained to determine the helicity and the packing of tubes. It is found that there is no predominating helicity, only a weak tendency of being of 'armchair' structure; the inter-tube spacing is close to 0.34 nm and several packing orientations may coexist in a single bundle. Electron energy loss spectra from the bundles of SWNTs and multi-walled carbon nanotubes are used to study electronic structure. The pi-bonding is proposed as inter-tube bonding in the bundles. The plasmon energy E-p depends on the diameter and inter-tube (or inter-walled) spacing. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of well-aligned double-walled carbon nanotube (DWNT) strands with diameters of 3–20μm and lengths of ∼10mm were measured using a stress–strain puller. The average tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the tested strands are 1.2GPa and 16GPa, respectively. Deformation and fracture processes of these samples are discussed. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of an individual DWNT bundle were estimated, with values comparable to those of SWNT bundles. The superior mechanical strengths of our as-prepared DWNT strands are expected to give them potential as a high-strength material and a reinforcement in composites.

Abstract:100 mm long semiconducting triple-walled carbon nanotubes (TWNTs) with uniform sections of up to 35 mm having the same chirality index, can be obtained by a gas-flow-directed growth method, as reported by Weizhong Qian and co-workers on p. 1867. The chiral angle distributions of the TWNTs were dominantly between 20° and 30°. The maximum current density sustained by each shell could reach up to 3.7 ×108 A/cm2.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are ideal template for constructing one-dimensional (1D) heterojunctions with intriguing optical and electrical properties, yet it remains challenging to wrap foreign materials around SWNTs due to their very small diameter and large curvature. Here, we present a space-confined method to synthesize SWNT bundles wrapped by MoS2 crystalline layers (SWNT@MoS2) film by embedding a pristine SWNT film within a porous multi-walled nanotube sponge, which acts as a liquid precursor container for hydrothermal reaction. We find that crystalline MoS2 sheets could be formed around the outer surface of SWNT bundles uniformly and continuously, with tailored number of multi-layers (3-17 layers), for bundle sizes ranging from several to hundreds of nanometers. The resulting SWNT@MoS2 network shows much enhanced light response and gas sensitivity, presenting promising applications as flexible photo-detectors and toxic gas sensors. Our scalable synthesis method and SWNT-based coaxial-cables will be useful in future developing innovated 1D van der Waals heterojunctions and flexible nanoelectronic systems.

Abstract:A novel approach based on Coulomb explosion has been developed to separate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) from their bundle. With this technique, we can readily separate a bundle of SWNTs into smaller bundles with uniform diameter as well as some individual SWNTs. The separated SWNTs have a typical length of several microns and form a nanotree at one end of the original bundle. More importantly, this separating procedure involves no surfactant and includes only one-step physical process. The separation method offers great conveniences for the subsequent individual SWNT or multiterminal SWNTs device fabrication and their physical properties studies.

Abstract:Eight fascinating sp(2)- and sp(3)-hybridized carbon allotropes have been uncovered using a newly developed ab initio particle-swarm optimization methodology for crystal structure prediction. These crystalline allotropes can be viewed respectively as three-dimensional (3D) polymers of (4,0), (5,0), (7,0), (8,0), (9,0), (3,3), (4,4), and (6,6) carbon nanotubes, termed 3D-(n, 0) or 3D-(n, n) carbons. The ground-state energy calculations show that the carbons all have lower energies than C-60 fullerene, and some are energetically more stable than the van der Waals packing configurations of their nanotube parents. Owing to their unique configurations, they have distinctive electronic properties, high Young's moduli, high tensile strength, ultrahigh hardness, good ductility, and low density, and may be potentially applied to a variety of needs.

Abstract:We report an air-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method for the synthesis of super-long carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles. By mixing a small amount of air in the vapor phase catalyst CVD process, the catalyst lifetime can be dramatically increased, and extremely long dense and aligned CNT bundles up to 1.5 cm can be achieved. Electron microscopy characterization shows that the injection of air does not damage the CNT structures. Further, we have estimated that individual ultra-long CNTs can carry moderate current densities similar to 10(5) A cm(-2), indicating their possible use in nanoelectronic devices.
