Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:where V and k are, respectively, the normal velocity and curvature of the interface. Equation (1) is sometimes called the “curve shortening problem” because it is the negative L2-gradient flow of the length of the interface. By drawing pictures, one can be easily convinced that a simple closed curve stays simple and smooth along (1) and shrinks to a point in finite time, with the limiting shape of a circle. However, a mathematical treatment of (1) turned out to be rather delicate. In fact, a rigorous study did not exist until the early 1980s, when differential geometers considered (1) as a tool in the search for simple closed geodesics on surfaces. It was also regarded as a model case for more general curvature flows, which are believed to be important in the topological classification of low-dimensional manifolds. As a first attempt, Gage [10] proved that the isoperimetric ratio decreases along convex curves. Then in Gage and Hamilton [12], it was shown that a convex curve stays convex and shrinks to a point in finite time. Moreover, if one normalizes the flow by dilating it so that the enclosing area is constant, the normalized flow converges smoothly to a circle. Finally, Grayson [14] completed this line of investigation by showing that a simple curve evolves into a convex one before shrinks to a point. For an alternative approach to this result, one may consult Hamilton [18]. Recently Mullins’s theory was generalized by Gurtin [15], [16] and by Angenent and Gurtin [4], [5] (see also the monograph of Gurtin [17]) to include anisotropy and the possibility of a difference in bulk energies between phases. Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.
Curve shortening flows on surfaces that are not convex at infinity

Abstract:The behavior of the curve shortening flow has been extensively studied. Gage, Hamilton, and Grayson proved that, under the curve shortening flow, an embedded closed curve in the Euclidean plane becomes convex after a finite time and then shrinks to a point while remaining convex. Moreover, Grayson extended these results to surfaces that are convex at infinity and proved results similar to those for plane curves. In this paper, we study the curve shortening flow on surfaces that are not convex at infinity. Specifically, we consider a warped product of a unit circle and an open interval with a strictly increasing warping function. In this setting, we can define a graph property for curves within these warped products. It is known that this graph property is preserved along the curve shortening flow. Similarly to the behavior of the curve shortening flow in the plane, we prove that the curve becomes a graph after a finite time under the curve shortening flow.

Abstract:We consider an anisotropic area-preserving nonlocal flow for closed convex plane curves, which is a generalization of the model introduced by Pan and Yang (J. Differential Equations 266 (2019), 3764–3786) when τ = 1. Under this flow, the evolving curve maintains its convexity and converges to a homothety of a smooth symmetric strictly convex plane curve in the C ∞ sense. The analysis of the asymptotic behavior of this flow implies the possibility of deforming one curve into another within the framework of Minkowski geometry.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a number of interesting properties and extensions of the convex flow problem from the perspective of convex geometry. We show that the sets of allowable flows always can be imbued with a downward closure property, which leads to a useful `calculus' of flows, allowing easy combination and splitting of edges. We then derive a conic form for the convex flow problem, which we show is equivalent to the original problem and almost self-dual. Using this conic form, we consider the nonconvex flow problem with fixed costs on the edges, i.e., where there is some fixed cost to send any nonzero flow over an edge. We show that this problem has almost integral solutions by a Shapley--Folkman argument, and we describe a rounding scheme that works well in practice. Additionally, we provide a heuristic for this nonconvex problem which is a simple modification of our original algorithm. We conclude by discussing a number of interesting avenues for future work.

Abstract:We show that under Space Curve Shortening flow any closed immersed curve in $\mathbb R^n$ whose projection onto $\mathbb{R}^2\times\{\vec{0}\}$ is convex remains smooth until it shrinks to a point. Throughout its evolution, the projection of the curve onto $\mathbb{R}^2\times\{\vec{0}\}$ remains convex. As an application, we show that any closed immersed curve in $\mathbb R^n$ can be perturbed to an immersed curve in $\mathbb R^{n+2}$ whose evolution by Space Curve Shortening shrinks to a point.

For embedded convex closed initial curves, both of the area-preserving flow and the length-preserving flow are shown to exist globally and converge smoothly to the boundary of the homothety of Wulff shape, which is determined by corresponding anisotropic function.

Abstract:We construct a translating solution to anisotropic curve shortening flow and show that for a given anisotropic factor $g:S^1\to\mathbb{R}_+$, and a given direction and speed, this translator is unique. We then construct an ancient compact solution to anisotropic curve shortening flow, and show that this solution, along with the appropriate translating solution, are the unique solutions to anisotropic curve shortening flow that lie in a slab of a given width and no smaller.

Abstract:In the last 15 years, White and Huisken-Sinestrari developed a far-reaching structure theory for the mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces. Their papers provide a package of estimates and structural results that yield a precise description of singularities and of high curvature regions in a mean convex flow. In the present paper, we give a new treatment of the theory of mean convex (and k-convex) flows. This includes: (1) an estimate for derivatives of curvatures, (2) a convexity estimate, (3) a cylindrical estimate, (4) a global convergence theorem, (5) a structure theorem for ancient solutions, and (6) a partial regularity theorem. Our new proofs are both more elementary and substantially shorter than the original arguments. Our estimates are local and universal. A key ingredient in our new approach is the new non- collapsing result of Andrews. Some parts are also inspired by the work of Perelman. In a forthcoming paper, we will give a new construction of mean curvature flow with surgery based on the theorems established in the present paper.

Abstract:We analyze a gradient flow of closed planar curves minimizing the anisoperimetric ratio. For such a flow the normal velocity is a function of the anisotropic curvature and it also depends on the total interfacial energy and enclosed area of the curve. In contrast to the gradient flow for the isoperimetric ratio, we show there exist initial curves for which the enclosed area is decreasing with respect to time. We also derive a mixed anisoperimetric inequality for the product of total interfacial energies corresponding to different anisotropy functions. Finally, we present several computational examples illustrating theoretical results.

Abstract:We revisit the well-known Curve Shortening Flow for immersed curves in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. We exploit a fundamental structure of the problem to derive a new global construction of a solution, that is, a construction that is valid for all times and is insensitive to singularities. The construction is characterized by discretization in time and the approximant, while still exhibiting the possibile formation of finitely many singularities at a finite set of singular times, exists globally and is well behaved and simpler to analyze than a solution of the CSF. A solution of the latter is obtained in the limit. Estimates for a natural (geometric) norm involving length and total absolute curvature allow passage to the limit. Many classical qualitative results about the flow can be recovered by exploiting the simplicity of the approximant and new ones can be proved. The construction also suggests a numerical procedure for the computation of the flow which proves very effective as demonstrated by a series of numerical experiments scattered throughout the paper.

Abstract:We show that every convex ancient solution of mean curvature flow with Type I curvature growth is either spherical, cylindrical, or planar. We then prove the corresponding statement for flows by a natural class of curvature functions which are convex or concave in the second fundamental form. Neither of these results assumes interior noncollapsing.

Abstract:We consider an expanding flow of smooth, closed, uniformly convex hypersurfaces in (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space with speed fu^{alpha}{sigma}_k^{beta}, where u is the support function of the hypersurface, alpha, beta are two constants, and beta>0, sigma_k is the k-th symmetric polynomial of the principle curvature radii of the hypersurface, k is an integer and 1<= k<= n. We prove that the flow has a unique smooth and uniformly convex solution for all time, and converges smoothly after normalisation, to a soliton which is a solution of a elliptic equation, when the constants alpha, beta belong to a suitable range, and the function f satisfies a strictly spherical convexity condition. When beta=1, the soliton equation is just the equation of Lp Christoffel-Minkowski problem. Thus our argument provides a proof to the well-known L_p Christoffel-Minkowski problem for the case p>= k+1 where p=2-alpha, which is identify with Ivaki's recent result.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the anisotropic curve shortening flow in the plane in the presence of an ambient force. We consider force fields in which all their derivatives are bounded in the $L^{\infty}$ sense. We prove that closed embedded curves that have a minimum of curvature sufficiently large shrink to round points. The method of proof follows along the same lines of Gage and Hamilton, in that we study a rescaling to prove curvature bounds. We additionally show that the influence of an ambient force field may make such a result untrue, by giving sufficient conditions on the ambient field that ensures eventual non-convexity of an initially convex curve evolving under the flow.
