Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:Some geometric behaviours of complete solutions to mean curvature flow before the singularities occur are studied. The author obtains the estimates of the rate of the distance between two fixed points and the derivatives of the second fundamental form. By use of a new maximum principle, some geometric properties at infinity are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity and singularity of the mean curvature flow of closed, smooth, embedded hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with positive mean curvature, with an attempt to understand the geometry of first time singularities. First we consider the mean curvature flow of graphs and convex hypersurfaces. Then we consider the special blow-up solutions at the maximal mean curvature points and obtain self-similar solutions at type I singularities and translating solutions at type II singularities. Finally we show that a general blow-up sequence converges along a subsequence to a convex limit flow, and give a classification of ancient convex solutions. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 53C44, 53A10, 35J60.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:We consider the problem of deforming a one-parameter family of hypersurfaces immersed into closed Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature operator. The hypersurface in this family satisfies mean curvature flow while the ambient metric satisfying the normalized Ricci flow. We prove that if the initial background manifold is an approximation of a spherical space form and the initial hypersurface also satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then either the hypersurfaces shrink to a round point in finite time or converge to a totally geodesic sphere as the time tends to infinity.

Abstract:We prove the short-time existence of the hyperbolic inverse (mean) curvature flow (with or without the specified forcing term) under the assumption that the initial compact smooth hypersurface of ℝ n +1 ( n ⩾ 2) is mean convex and star-shaped. Several interesting examples and some hyperbolic evolution equations for geometric quantities of the evolving hypersurfaces are shown. Besides, under different assumptions for the initial velocity, we can get the expansion and the convergence results of a hyperbolic inverse mean curvature flow in the plane ℝ 2 , whose evolving curves move normally.

Abstract:In this paper, the motion of strictly convex closed plane curves under dissipative hyperbolic mean curvature flow is studied. The hyperbolic Monge–Amp è re equation is derived by using the support function. The short‐time existence of the flow is proved, and some evolution equations are derived. Furthermore, according to different initial velocities, we discuss the expansion and contraction of the dissipative hyperbolic curvature flow; that is, if the initial velocity v ̃00 , the flow will expand to a limit curve as t→∞ .

Abstract:We consider an anisotropic area-preserving nonlocal flow for closed convex plane curves, which is a generalization of the model introduced by Pan and Yang (J. Differential Equations 266 (2019), 3764–3786) when τ = 1. Under this flow, the evolving curve maintains its convexity and converges to a homothety of a smooth symmetric strictly convex plane curve in the C ∞ sense. The analysis of the asymptotic behavior of this flow implies the possibility of deforming one curve into another within the framework of Minkowski geometry.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the steepest descent $H^{-1}$-gradient flow of the length functional for immersed plane curves, known as the curve diffusion flow. It is known that under this flow there exist both initially immersed curves which develop at least one singularity in finite time and initially embedded curves which self-intersect in finite time. We prove that under the flow closed curves with initial data close to a round circle in the sense of normalised $L^2$ oscillation of curvature exist for all time and converge exponentially fast to a round circle. This implies that for a sufficiently large `waiting time' the evolving curves are strictly convex. We provide an optimal estimate for this waiting time, which gives a quantified feeling for the magnitude to which the maximum principle fails. We are also able to control the maximum of the multiplicity of the curve along the evolution. A corollary of this estimate is that initially embedded curves satisfying the hypotheses of the global existence theorem remain embedded. Finally, as an application we obtain a rigidity statement for closed planar curves with winding number one.

Abstract:This paper concerns the hyperbolic mean curvature flow (HMCF) for plane curves. A quasilinear wave equation is derived and studied for the motion of plane curves under the HMCF. Based on this, we investigate the formation of singularities in the motion of these curves. In particular, we prove that the motion under the HMCF of periodic plane curves with small variation on one period and small initial velocity in general blows up and singularities develop in finite time. Some blowup results have been obtained and the estimates on the life-span of the solutions are given.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new geometric flow — the hyperbolic gradientflow for graphs in the (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ^n+1.This kind of flow is new and very natural to understand the geometry ofmanifolds. We particularly investigate the global existence of the evolution ofconvex hypersurfaces in ℝ^n+1 and the evolution of plane curves,and prove that, under the hyperbolic gradient flow, they converge to thehyperplane and the straight line, respectively, when t goes to the infinity.Our results show that the theory of shock waves of hyperbolic conservation lawscan be naturally applied to do surgery on manifolds. Some fundamental but openproblems are also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we first consider the curve case of Hu-Li-Wei's flow for shifted principal curvatures of h-convex hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ proposed in [10]. We prove that if the initial closed curve is smooth and strictly h-convex, then the solution exists for all time and preserves strict h-convexity along the flow. Moreover, the evolving curve converges smoothly and exponentially to a geodesic circle centered at the origin. The key ingredient in our proof is the Heintze-Karcher type inequality for h-convex curves proved recently in [14].

Abstract:In this paper, we study fully nonlinear curvature flows of noncompact spacelike hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. We prove that if the initial hypersurface satisfies certain conditions, then the flow exists for all time. Moreover, we show that after rescaling the flow converges to the future timelike hyperboloid, which is a self-expander.

Abstract:We consider a motion of non-closed planar curves with infinite length. The motion is governed by a steepest descent flow for the geometric functional which consists of the sum of the length functional and the total squared curvature. We call the flow shortening-straightening flow. In this paper, first we prove a long time existence result for the shortening-straightening flow for non-closed planar curves with infinite length. Then we show that the solution converges to a stationary solution as time goes to infinity. Moreover we give a classification of the stationary solution.

Curve shortening flows on surfaces that are not convex at infinity

Abstract:The behavior of the curve shortening flow has been extensively studied. Gage, Hamilton, and Grayson proved that, under the curve shortening flow, an embedded closed curve in the Euclidean plane becomes convex after a finite time and then shrinks to a point while remaining convex. Moreover, Grayson extended these results to surfaces that are convex at infinity and proved results similar to those for plane curves. In this paper, we study the curve shortening flow on surfaces that are not convex at infinity. Specifically, we consider a warped product of a unit circle and an open interval with a strictly increasing warping function. In this setting, we can define a graph property for curves within these warped products. It is known that this graph property is preserved along the curve shortening flow. Similarly to the behavior of the curve shortening flow in the plane, we prove that the curve becomes a graph after a finite time under the curve shortening flow.

Abstract:We consider the volume preserving flow of smooth, closed and convex hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+1}$ with speed given by a general nonhomogeneous function of the Gauss curvature. For a large class of speed functions, we prove that the solution of the flow remains convex, exists for all positive time $t\in [0,\infty)$ and converges to a geodesic sphere exponentially as $t\to\infty$ in the smooth topology. A key step is to show the $L^1$ oscillation decay of the Gauss curvature to its average along a subsequence of times going to the infinity, which combined with an argument using the hyperbolic curvature measure theory implies the Hausdorff convergence.
