Abstract:Putting up in backtracked secondary planet and using space environment to carry out mutation breeding has become a new way for modern plant breeding and a new area for plant mutation breeding.Space mutation breeding in China has gained notable achievements,and bred many new varieties(lines).But at the same time,there still exist many problems to be solved,especially some theoretical research activities having a lot of contradictory results,which hindered the further development of space breeding.This paper reviews the mechanism of mutation breeding in space,mutagenic characteristics,its effect on plants,and carries out analysis and prospect on the existing problems.

Abstract:It is a new breeding method to bring seeds to space by recoverable satellite.In recent years,we have brought more than 70 plants and 500 cultivars to space,obtained great achievements and developed many new cultivars through the special environment of outer space.More and more methods of studying the mechanism for the space mutation have appeared,developing from observation to cell and molecular techniques,and some great progresses have been made.In addition,the problems and tendency in space mutation breeding as well as the major research aspects for the space mutation breeding in the future were discussed in this paper.
Applications and Perspectives of Radiation Mutagenesis in Woody Plant Breeding

Abstract:Radiation mutagenesis plays an important role in the selection and genetic improvement of new plant varieties. In order to provide breeders with a rapid and accurate picture of the research and application of radiation mutagenesis on woody plants. Based on the CNKI database and the official website of the International Atomic Energy Agency, a statistical analysis of the published literature related to radiation mutagenesis in woody plants after 2000 and the released radiation mutant species were carried out. A comprehensive review was sorted out from the aspects of radiation mutagenesis mechanism, factors affecting radiation efficiency, mutant identification and isolation, radiation breeding achievements in this field. The result shows that the mechanism of radiation mutagenesis is still unclear, the key factor affecting radiation efficiency is the appropriate irradiation dose, followed by attention to the sensitive variability of the irradiated material, and mutant identification methods are phenotypic, physiological-biochemical, cytological and molecular markers, which are used in combination for more accurate results.Overall, the number of radiation-breeding woody plant varieties is small and tends to decline gradually. The progress of radiation breeding research in woody plants is reviewed, and solutions to the problems of radiation mutagenesis, such as low mutagenesis efficiency, poor control of mutation direction and imperfect mutant identification methods, are given, and the future directions of radiation breeding research are also prospected, aiming to provide reference and new ideas for plant radiation breeding research and application.

Abstract:Mutation induction technique has played an important role in wheat improvement.In this paper,the current status of new techniques for mutation induction and breeding in wheat was briefly reviewed.The new induction methods and their experimental advances of ion beam implantation,aerospace induction and biological factors were analyzed at different aspects of mutagenesis mechanism,induced biological effect,mutant germplasm creation and mutant variety development.The perspective of new techniques for mutation induction in wheat was also discussed.

Abstract:Heavy ion biotechnology has received much attention since the mid-1980s,when the first mutagenic effect of heavy ion beams was found in rice.Since then,plant breeding is one of the focuses in heavy ion biotechnology.In this paper we outlined the recent developments in plant breeding by heavy ion beams.We introduced briefly the essential characteristics and superiority of heavy ion beams applied in plant breeding,and reviewed further the mutagenic research in three levels(e.g.,molecular,cell and individual) of plants.At last,we summarized artificial mutants obtained in plants irradiated by heavy ion beams.

Abstract:Plant senescence is a progress between mature and death,it is a necessary phase in plant lifecycle.Plant senescence characterized as degradation of biomacromolecule,dissociate of cell structures,reusability of nutrients and etc.Senescence is regulated by various factors.In this review,we focused on the description of rice senescence mutants based on brief summarization of the physiochemical properties during senescence and the factors influencing senescence in plant.Which may improve the understanding of the genetic regulation on rice senescence provide some references for studies on rice development and breeding new with delay senestence.

Abstract:Space breeding in medicinal plants is special characteristics in China. Compared with other plants, in spite of a relatively small number, Medicinal plants have more obvious characteristics and advantages. Research on medicinal plants has also been carried into all aspects, such as biological traits, physiology and biochemistry, genomics, as well as differences in chemical composition, and chemical composition analysis is also involved. However, compared with other plants, especially crops and vegetables, biological research is an obvious deficiency, that is mainly reflected in the insufficient genetics and breeding researches, the stability of genetic traits from generation to generation were not followed up and in-depth study in breeding areas was not carried out. If medicinal plants resources from space with the genetic stability good quality were selected, it would address the problem of lack of resources and ease the pressure on wild resources of medicinal plants. It would at the same time play an important role in promoting the development of medicinal botany space breeding and the implementation of modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.

Abstract:Special legume crops varieties were needed for the rapid development of bean sprouts modern industry.However,the traditional legume crop varieties have some defects in the yield and agronomic traits and the studies of breeding new legume crop varieties should be strengthened.Mutation breeding is an effective method in selecting and breeding legume crop varieties.This paper stated the mutagenic effects on agronomic traits,the characteristics of growth,physiological,physiological-biochemical,cells and genetic materials that induced by physical mutagen(γ-radiation,ion beam,mixed high energy particle field and so on),chemical mutagen(EMS,NaN3,NQO and so on)and space mutation in legume crops such as soybean,mungbean,pea,broad bean,cowpea,adzuki bean and so on.Moreover,this study also discussed the prospects of the new technology of mutagenesis,the basic theory of mutation technique and effective screening techniques mutagenesis offspring of sprout legumes crop in order to provide theoretical references for the breeding in sprout legume varieties.

Abstract:Radiation mutation breeding has been used for nearly 100 years and has successfully improved crops by increasing genetic variation. Global food production is facing a series of challenges, such as rapid population growth, environmental pollution and climate change. How to feed the world's enormous human population poses great challenges to breeders. Although advanced technologies, such as gene editing, have provided effective ways to breed varieties, by editing a single or multiple specific target genes, enhancing germplasm diversity through mutation is still indispensable in modern and classical radiation breeding because it is more likely to produce random mutations in the whole genome. In this short review, the current status of classical radiation, accelerated particle and space radiation mutation breeding is discussed, and the molecular mechanisms of radiation-induced mutation are demonstrated. This review also looks into the future development of radiation mutation breeding, hoping to deepen our understanding and provide new vitality for the further development of radiation mutation breeding.
