Abstract:In China, the R&D of high peak power klystron has been made much progress in recent years. In 2010, the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) has successfully developed S-band 100MW klystron, and, currently, are developing an S-band 150MW klystron. The Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP) cooperated with the Hang Guang Electrical Factory has developed S-band 65MW klystron. In this paper, the specifications of our typical high peak power klystrons are presented and the key technical problems for developing this kind of klystron will be discussed in this conference.

Abstract:High peak power klystron has broad application prospects in large scientific and engineering fields such as microwave weapon system and high-energy electron positron collider. The conventional methods to improve the efficiency of high peak power klystron mainly include second harmonic cavities, long drift tube technology and extended interaction circuits. In this paper, the design method of reducing microwave leakage is adopted to improve the efficiency of 100MW klystron working in S-band instantaneous power by more than 5%.

Abstract:The ghigh peak power klystron works as a high power microwave source and is receiving much recognition. The single beam high power klystron has experienced many drawbacks that are unable to overcome, such as the high operating voltage, the low output efficiency, and the bulky system volume etc. In this paper, the high peak power Multi-Beam Klystron(MBK) was preliminarily researched and the electron optics system and RF interaction system of an S-band 50 MW MBK were studied. The results show that the MBK has many advantages compared with the single beam klystron. Under the same power level, the MBK reduces the operating voltage and improves the efficiency greatly.

Abstract:An L-band 10 MW peak power, 150 kW average power multi-beam klystron (MBK) is studied. High quality multiple paracial electron optics system axis are achieved in a uniform, multi-lens magnetic field focusing system. The non-linear calculation of beam-wave interaction is carried for the L-band MBK with six electron beams and six coaxial cavities including a second harmonic cavity. The results show that the multi-beam klystron can produce an output peak power of more than 10 MW, an efficiency of more than 65% and a gain of more than 45 dB with a beam voltage of 115 kV and a beam current of 132 A.

Abstract:From 1960s the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) began to study the broadband klystron. Many methods to extend bandwidth of klystron have been adopted and more than ten types of broadband klystron have been developed. Recently we have successfully broken through the bandwidth of 12% in S-band on the peak power level of 800 kW. This paper introduces the state-of-art of our S-band broadband klystron.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and measurement results of an X-band broadband klystron with a peak power of 1MW developed at Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Science (AIRCAS). In the development of this klystron, the single electron beam with an electromagnetic focusing system was adopted to achieve a high beam transmission rate. Meanwhile, a filter-loaded over-lapping mode double gap coupling cavities output circuit (OMDGOC) and a pill-box output window were used to ensure the klystron has an operating bandwidth of 650MHz. The 1# klystron was tested under a 1 % duty ratio at 27 operating frequency points. The technical specifications of this klystron are as follows: peak power: over 1MW, efficiency: over 24.3 %, gain: over 37.1dB, beam transmission rate: over 96%, which meet the design requirements.

Abstract:The design of a C-band klystron with high power and high efficiency (HE) is reported in this paper, involving beam-wave interaction, electron optics system (EOS) and RF window. The simulation result of the beam-wave interaction is presented, in which the klystron could deliver up to 48% electronic efficiency and 47% RF efficiency. The pulsed output power is 5.29 MW at the bandwidth of 16 MHz with the gain over 46 dB. The simulation results show that the gun of electron optics system can generate a pencil beam with radius of 4.5 mm, voltage of 130 kV, current of 85 A. Permanent magnet (PM) focusing is adopted in this Klystron, providing a peak magnetic field of 0.26 T in the interaction region. A compact two-stage depressed collector was designed for collecting particles at the end of interaction with thermal dissipation density less than 0.01 kw/cm2. RF window design is also conducted to compete the physical design study of this C-band HE Klystron.

Abstract:This paper introduces a high-power broadband X-band klystron amplifier that achieves an output power of 157 MW and a 3 dB operating bandwidth of 6.7%. The amplifier employs an explosive emission diode with high impedance, which balances the requirements of high power and broadband. The multi-gap input and output cavities are designed to operate at two different longitudinal modes within the operating frequency band, resulting in a flat absorption rate and output efficiency. Moreover, an eight-stage stagger-tuned bunching section is implemented to achieve a uniform fundamental harmonic current modulation depth across the frequency band. Simulation results indicate that when the diode voltage is 550 kV and the beam current is 550 A, the amplifier can achieve a maximum power of 157 MW with an efficiency of 51.9% at the central frequency of 9.8 GHz. Furthermore, within the 3 dB operating bandwidth of 6.7% (670 MHz), the power output remains higher than 80 MW. This novel klystron amplifier structure exhibits exceptional performance in terms of bandwidth, power, and efficiency, thus validating the effectiveness of the design in enhancing bandwidth and providing a solid foundation for the broadband design of high-power microwave sources.

Abstract:The Development of the 10MW L-band multibeam klystron was started in the Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IECAS) three years ago. The electrical and structural designs for this klystron have been accomplished , in which many technical problems have been resolved. In the design of electron optical system, the uniform field multiple-lens focusing scheme was adopted, by which the paraxial multi-beams with good laminarity and fluctuation were obtained. In the design of beam-wave interaction system, the second harmonic cavity was used to enhance the beam-wave interaction efficiency and reduce the volume and weight of the klystron. Nowadays, the prototype is being fabricated and will be finished in one or two months. This paper presents the research progress on the 10MW L-band multi-beam klystron and the key technical issues resolved in detail.

Researches on pulsed-power-driven high energy density physics have been conducted more the three decades in China. In the paper a brief review of these researches will be presented. Main content will be emphasized on recent progress conducted on PTS. Future plan on new pulsed power driver for higher energy density physics will be also proposed.

Abstract:In the paper, we present the development of the powerful multiple-beam klystron amplifier with the peak output power of 3.2 MW and operating frequency of 5712 MHz. We show the capability of suppressing the high-voltage breakdowns in the collector area and increasing the efficiency of the multiple-beam klystron owing to alignment of the electric fields in the output cascade.

Abstract:Compared with other types of lasers,high-power fiber laser has a compact structure,high conversion efficiency,convenient thermal management,and good beam quality,which has a broad application prospect in industry,national defense and other fields.However,the high-gain fiber materials,the optical components,the high-quality laser pumps,and the high-performance laser seed became the key factors restricting the development of 10-kW-level fiber laser.The development status of the high-power fiber laser materials and the optical components are introduced in this paper.The key technologies of the Yb3+-doped double clad fiber,the optical components (e.g.,fiber Bragg grating,cladding power stripper,and combiner),laser pumps,and single-frequency laser seed are analyzed and discussed.Moreover,the new development trends of the fiber laser technology about domestic 10-kW-level even more higher output power is prospected.

Abstract:To reduce the energy demand and operation cost for circular electron positron collider (CEPC), the high efficiency klystrons are being developed at Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A 800-kW continuous wave (CW) klystron operating at frequency of 650-MHz has been designed. The results of beam–wave interaction simulation with several different codes are presented. The efficiency is optimized to be 65% with a second harmonic cavity in three-dimensional (3D) particle-in-cell code CST. The effect of cavity frequency error and mismatch load on efficiency of klystron have been investigated. The design and cold test of reentrant cavities are described, which meet the requirements of RF section design. So far, the manufacturing and high-power test of the first klystron prototype have been completed. When the gun operated at DC voltage of 80 kV and current of 15.4 A, the klystron peak power reached 804 kW with output efficiency of about 65.3% at 40% duty cycle. The 1-dB bandwidth is ±0.8 MHZ. Due to the crack of ceramic window, the CW power achieved about 700 kW. The high-power test results are in good agreement with 3D simulation.

Abstract:A CW S-band broadband klystron for communication system has been developed at Institute of Electronics,Academy of Sciences.The design and calculation of the klystron are presented in this paper.Two types of broadband output circuits,filter loaded double-gap coupling cavity output circuit with mode coalescence and three-pole filter-loaded single cavity output circuit,are used in the klystron.The design,calculation and test results for these two types of output circuits are given in this paper.The klystron with three-pole filter loaded single cavity output circuit has CW output power of 17 kW and instantaneous bandwidth of 4.6%.

Abstract:Multi-beam klystron(MBK) is a new type of high power microwave amplifier. IEAS began the research work on MBK in 1992. Some research progress on the S-band 200kW MBK will be described in this paper. It includes the design and calculation of the MBK, the design and manufacture of multi-beam electron gun and its focusing system, the design and cold measurement of the filter-load it-mode double gap coupling cavity. The hot test results of S-band 200kW MBK are also given in this paper.

Abstract:1.5-D Large signal Klystron simulation code KlyC was initially developed for high efficiency (HE) Klystron projects since 2017, which could handle the design and optimization of mainstream pencil-beam (including multi-beam) Klystron projects. In recent 2 years, some new features to expand the functionality of KlyC has been implemented, to facilitate the analysis and development of novel category of Klystrons. In the up-to-date version of KlyC, traveling wave module is integrated to fulfill the SW/TW hybrid device development; Sheet electron beam (SEB) space charge model is supplemented to realize the SEB Klystron/TWT simulations. Small signal theory fully considering relativistic effects, cavity coupling, reflected electrons not only speed up the preliminary design of generic Klystrons (including broadband Klystrons), but also could be used to predict some sophisticated instabilities in high-gain Klystrons, such as those in Kladistron development. All these progress have been confirmed as both effective and accurate with rigorous benchmark with 3D particle-in-cell simulations.
