Abstract:Life cycle assessment is a technique to assess potential environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a product, process or service. This paper introduces life cycle assessment into the full process of agricultural circular economy. There are increasing environmental risks associated with agricultural circular economy; however, no appropriate assessment and analysis techniques on environmental impact are available. Due to the lack of special life cycle assessment database and available methodology in agricultural circular economy, we proposed a life cycle assessment technical framework with emphasis on problems associated with traditional agricultural circular economy life cycle assessment. This paper is aimed to produce reliable information on the environmental impact assessment for agriculture policy-makers, producers and consumers to help them choose sustainable development agricultural products and processes.

Abstract:Agricultural Life Cycle Assessment (ALCA) is an important tool able to inform environmental improvement in agricultural ecosystems. However, many studies address only one or a few environmental aspects, and where several indicators are used, the optional steps of normalization and weighting are rarely used to support interpretation. In this study, the winter wheat-summer maize rotation, widely practiced on the North China Plain, was evaluated using a variety of indicators addressing natural resource use, human and ecosystem health. The results after normalization and weighting highlight the need to address eutrophication potential and aquatic ecotoxicity potential as significant environmental aspects, especially in the higher input winter wheat part of the rotation. Different results were obtained using Chinese normalization factors compared to global factors, highlighting the need to use local factors when local environmental challenges are the priority. With the scarcity of arable land in China, there have been concerted and successful attempts to raise yields. However, there is now a need to improve nutrient management and pest control as strategic priorities. The life cycle perspective is important because opportunities also exist to achieve environmental improvement in the local manufacturing systems for farming inputs.

Abstract:According the results of domestic and foreign research,this article attempted to construct the framework of agricultural life cycle assessment(ALCA) in China.The ALCA was also divided into four steps,which were goal and scope definition,inventory analysis,impact assessment and result interpretation,whereas the scopes should include not only the traditional domains(agriculture,industry,service sectors),but also the emerging field of waste disposal and inventory analysis involved 13 embodied indexes which belonged to three aspects of nonrenewable resource,renewable resource and environmental burden;simultaneouly,the impact assessment can be developed according to characterization,normalization and weighting values.We conducted a case study in Luancheng,Hebei Province to introduce the basal methods and procedure of the ALCA,and in contrast to wheat production in Denmark,We analyzed the all kinds of potential risks of winter wheat of ALCA in North China.The results showed that,in wheat production system,the energy depletion was larger,and water and soil resources were under great stress,and the potential aquatic eutrophication,fresh water ecotoxicity,acidification and terrestrial ecotoxicity were 338.83%,166.05%,42.90% and 25.70%,respectively.We received a higher grain-yielding at the cost of relatively larger potential environmental risk.
[Integrated Evaluation of Circular Agriculture System: a Life Cycle Perspective].

Abstract:For the point of view that recycling economy system is one of ways to achieve the low-carbon economy, we have made an evaluation on a typical circular agriculture duck industry in Hunan Province, China, through improving the framework of life cycle assessment (LCA). The analysis indicated that the consumption of non-renewable resources, land and water were 48.629 MJ, 2.36 m2 and 1 321.41 kg, while the potential greenhouse gas (GHGs), acidification, eutrophication, human toxicity, freshwater ecotoxicity and terrestrial ecotoxicity were 11 543.26 g (CO2 eq), 52.36g (SO2eq), 25.83g (PO4eq), 1.26, 60.74 and 24.65 g (1,4-DCBeq), respectively. The potential damage of aquatic eutrophication, freshwater ecotoxicity and terrestrial ecotoxicity was more serious than that of GHGs. Main results were following: i. the circular agricultural chain promoted the principle of "moderate circulation", which based on the traditional production methods; ii. circular agriculture could not blindly pursue low carbon development. Instead, soil and biological carbon sequestration should be considered, in addition to reducing carbon emissions; iii. circular economy and circular agriculture should take other potential environmental impacts into account such as acidification, eutrophication and ecotoxicity,with the exception to carbon emissions,to developed integrated system assessment; iv. LCA could provide a comprehensive assessment of circular agriculture, and it was worth of further study.

Abstract:Resources, energy consumptions and the environmental performance throughout the entire food life cycle were discussed. Life cycle assessment was introduced to food processing field, and food LCA system was established with four parts: goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and improvement assessment. The problems of developing food LCA in China were analyzed. A case of beer brewing process was studied, the results show that the main potential environmental factor influence orders are eutrophication, dust and solid wastes, and the corresponding evaluation values are 0.061, 0.015, 0.003, respectively. Based on it, the environmental impacts can be reduced by conducting effective wastewater treatment, improving material comminution technique and reutilizing the waste diatomite, respectively. The study shows that developing food LCA can provide basic data support for improving the environmental performance of food products, and can be of benefit to food industry sustainable development in China.

Abstract:Abstract: The agricultural revolution was the key development in the rise of human civilization. It’s a varied field that produces a wide array of products which are important to us. As our global populations are growing faster the competition for natural resources will increase resulting in pressure on agricultural production of food, fiber, energy, various high-value by-products, etc. With upgraded concerns related to environmental impacts associated with the needs of a growing population, a life cycle assessment (LCA) framework will help to determine areas of greatest impact. The LCA methodology was mainly developed for industrial operations but we are using them in a wider range of fields which includes agriculture. Many factors increase the complexity of determining impacts associated with agricultural production The lack of consistent methodology of some impacts that are of major concern to agriculture (e.g., land and water usage) increases the difficulty or complications of this analysis. This paper attempts to review some of these issues and give perspective to the LCA expert in the field of agriculture. Abstract:Life cycle assessment (LCA) method has been widely used in many fields since its birth, but the most prominent contribution is its application to environmental management. The technical framework of LCA can be divided into four parts: target and scope, list analysis, impact assessment (LCIA) and result interpretation. The methods of LCIA can be summed up as midpoint method and end point method. LCA has limitations in such as data acquisition, inventory allocation, boundary selection, evaluation models, temporal and spatial constraints, and uncertainty of results. In order to adapt to the requirements of environmental management and evaluation technology, LCA evaluation technology is being developed towards a systematic direction. LCA has so far expanded its application field and avoided its limitation in evaluation, which makes it become an indispensable tool for environmental management.

Abstract:This paper utilizes the statistical data from the Chinese Energy Statistical Yearbook and the Input-output Table of Zhejiang Province and the experimental data of IPCC,adopts the Tiered Input-Output Life Cycle Assessment(TIO-LCA) method to build five tires to measure the agricultural carbon footprint to analyze the quantitative and the structure characteristics of the carbon emission.It is shown that the agricultural carbon emission calculated by IPCC is 43.55% of the carbon footprint,and the carbon emission embodied in the agricultural energy and the agrochemical inputs such as fertilizers,pesticides,insecticides in the agriculture is neglected or be underestimated,which seriously affects the agricultural system reduction greenhouse gases and the low-carbon development strategy.In the meantime,the embodied carbon in different energy and the carbon emission of the agrochemical inputs in the whole life cycle and the emission in waste deposal are the main three sources of the greenhouse gas emission in the agricultural industry.The percentage of the carbon emission in the production,selling and the usage of the nitrogenous fertilizer is the biggest one in the whole system of the agricultural industry.The agricultural technology,the farming practices and the management measure has the huge potential in the emission reduction and the environment improvement in the agriculture industry.

Abstract:Agriculture LCA is a means of making a comprehensive and quantitative evaluation and analysis of agricultural production, the utilization of resource in its life cycle, environmental burden and environmental impact. Its establishment and application are a complicated systematic engineering and need positive supports from government, farmers, agricultural research organization and all stratus of society. From the viewpoint of agricultural sustainable development, this paper presents the definition,procedure and technical system of agricultural LCA by combining with the current status on agricultural LCA researches in foreign countries. The paper expounds the significance and countermeasures on agricultural LCA researches in China from some aspects such as its necessity, possible problems and strategies.

Abstract:A life cycle assessment (LCA) method was used to examine the environmental impact of the winter wheat-summer maize production system on the North China Plain. The LCA considered the entire system required to produce 1 ton each of winter wheat and summer maize. The analysis included raw material extraction and transportation, agrochemical production and transportation, and arable farming in the field. First, all emissions and resource consumption connected to the different processes were listed in a life cycle inventory (LCI) and related to a common unit (1 ton of grain). Subsequently, a life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was conducted, in which the inventory data were aggregated into indicators for environmental effects, including energy depletion, climate change, acidification, aquatic eutrophication, human toxicity, aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicity. For winter wheat systems, energy depletion and acidification were the most relevant environmental impacts, and energy depletion and aquatic eutrophication were the primary concerns for summer maize systems. The results revealed that the most important source of environmental impact in the winter wheat-summer maize production system in Huantai County was the production and application of nitrogen fertilisers. The environmental impacts of winter wheat were much stronger than those of summer maize due to higher inputs and lower use efficiency of agrochemicals.
Analysis of carbon emission efficiency and optimization of low carbon for agricultural land intensive use

Abstract:There is a dilemma between raising the intensive use level of agricultural land and controlling carbon emissions from agricultural land use. Carbon emissions from agricultural land use can be considered as a cost, and the suitable intensive use level of agricultural land should acquire a good efficiency of carbon emissions from agricultural land use. First, an assessment model for evaluating agricultural land use intensity was established in this article, and the input-output indices of agricultural land intensive use were selected. The input-output indices of agricultural land intensive use were composed of labor input per unit of agricultural land, capital input per unit of agricultural land, technique input per unit of agricultural land, value-added of agriculture per unit of agricultural land, grain products per unit of agricultural land, income from household business per unit of agricultural land, and ammonia-nitrogen emission from agriculture per unit of agricultural land. Secondly, the intensity values of agricultural land intensive use in 31 provinces were computed. Thirdly, based on a slacks-based measure model, the input-output indices were established. The input-output indices applied in the slacks-based measure model were composed of labor input per unit of agricultural land, capital input per unit of agricultural land, technique input per unit of agricultural land, value-added of agriculture per ton of carbon emission, grain products per ton of carbon emission, income from household business per ton of carbon emission, and ammonia-nitrogen emission from agriculture per ton of carbon emission. Fourthly, this article calculated the total efficiency values, technical efficiency values, and scale efficiency values of carbon emission from agricultural land intensive use in 31 provinces and designed an input-output optimization of agricultural land intensive use. Lastly, low-carbon optimization strategies for agricultural land use in provinces whose total efficiencies of carbon emission were inefficient were put forward. The results showed that: 1) Consistency between agricultural land use intensity and its efficiency of carbon emissions does not exist widely in China, and the provinces whose intensity values of agricultural land use are large are mainly located in eastern China and the traditional farming zone. 2) The provinces whose total efficiencies of carbon emission from agricultural land intensive use are DEA efficient were mainly distributed in western China, and the total efficiencies of provinces in the Yangtze Delta, the Zhujiang Delta and Jing-Jin-Ji Megalopolis which are in an economically developed area are widely low. 3) The main reason for the low total efficiency was the imperfect technical efficiency of carbon emissions from agricultural land intensive use, and the imperfect scale efficiency had little effect on the low total efficiency. 4) In order to improve the total efficiency of carbon emissions from agricultural land intensive use, some measures should be adopted according to the local features of agricultural land use and the economy. These measures mainly consist of transferring agricultural labor, controlling carbon sources input, developing low-carbon and high-output agriculture, etc. Effective measures can be applied to control the carbon emissions from agricultural land use, and also can be added to the good outputs which contain added value of agriculture, grain output, and income from increased household business. of course, the emissions of ammonia nitrogen discharged from agriculture can also be reduced by improving agricultural land use.

Agricultural Subsidies Assessment of Cropping System from Environmental and Economic Perspectives in North China Based on LCA

Abstract:In China, government subsidies in the agricultural sector have played an important role in increasing grain production and supporting farming incomes. However, agricultural intensification has also led to concerns about environmental harm, especially on the North China Plain. In this study, life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to assess environmental impacts relating to the winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the high-yielding and intensively cultivated Huantai County. Over the period 1996-2012, energy depletion potential, global warming potential, acidification potential and eutrophication potential all decreased both per t grain produced and per ha production area. However, water resource consumption, human toxicity potential, aquatic ecotoxicity potential and terrestrial ecotoxicity potential increased. The weighted environmental index, integrating all eight indicators into a single score, suggested that overall environmental impact had decreased by 15.2% pert of grain produced and 11% per ha cropped, largely as a result of improved management of N fertilizers as EP was identified as the most important environmental impact category. When human health impacts of emissions (assessed in DALYs) were monetarized, the life cycle environmental costs of both winter wheat and summer maize were also found to have decreased over time. Taking both the increased grain production and the reduction in life cycle impacts, the total life cycle environmental costs of grain production in Huantai County were found to have fallen from 16.6 million RMB.yr(-1) to 12.8 million RMB.yr(-1), a decrease of 23.2%. These results suggest that production and welfare-oriented subsidies in the agricultural sector in China have generally brought about environmental co-benefits. Nevertheless, there is scope for ongoing environmental improvement, particularly in relation to pesticide use. With agricultural subsidies increasingly viewed as a means of achieving environmental goals, there is an ongoing role for LCA to evaluate the different types of environmental impacts. The coupling of LCA with monetarization tools also has potential for use in informing the design of environmental policy instruments in the agricultural sector.
Optimization of coupling crop and livestock production system's eco-efficiency in northern China based on a life cycle assessment and data envelopment analysis method

Abstract:Under the twin pressures of global food security and dual‑carbon strategies, improving farm eco-efficiency is critical for achieving China's goal of a 50 Pg increase in grain production, meeting the ambitious climate mitigation targets set by the Paris Agreement, and meeting seven of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. However, there is limited research on eco-efficiency measures supported by localised fine-scale data and coupling mechanisms for the structure, production process, efficiency improvement, and carbon reduction synergies of integrated farming systems in China. This study used the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methods to assess eco-efficiency at the farm level in northern China, included in the National Coupling Crop and Livestock Production Pilot Programs, to improve the eco-efficiency of farms to achieve increased production and emission reductions. The results showed that the overall eco-efficiency of farms was in the lower-middle range, with only 20.18 % of the farms having a technical efficiency exceeding 1. Problems included a backward level of pure technical efficiency and a return to scale. Non-integrated farms have the lowest profitability (41.33 %) and the highest carbon emission intensity of 3.03 kg CO<sub>2</sub>eq/USD. The global warming potential impact of non-integrated farms optimization could be reduced by 25 Pg CO<sub>2</sub>eq. Implementing the integrated farming mode has a significant advantage in reducing carbon emissions and improving productivity. Overall, farm fodder optimization can be increased by up to 42.41 %. Simultaneously, farms with sufficient farmland are more likely to realise a highly integrated business mode for crop cultivation and livestock breeding. Therefore, constructing a new type of green integrated farming system will help farms achieve increased production and emission reductions, promote the development of sustainable agriculture, and provide a Chinese model for the realisation of global SDGs.

Abstract:Life cycle assessment (LCA) is widely employed for evaluating waste management and recycling technologies. However traditional LCA analytical method has limitations in boundary setting and indicators selection. It is necessary to find a way to improve LCA. This paper focuses two outstanding issues in traditional LCA method: the boundary-setting and indicators amendment. On the one hand, based on traditional indicators, this paper extends study on local concern pollutants indicator system, local or national endowments, and efficiency titles. On the other hand, from the temporal dimension, i.e. short term, medium term and long term, and the spatial dimension, i.e. local, national and global level, this paper establishes a more comprehensive analysis framework. These two aspects together form an indicators matrix. So the assessment makers can be classified into three categories, enterprises, governments or public. A case study was undertaken to carry out quantitative assessment between straw-made biomass pellets technology and straw-made biogas technology. The results proved that traditional LCA is lack of the ability to thoroughly and specifically analysis the comprehensive effect of one technology, while the amended indicators matrix in this paper can reflect the behavior entity's evaluation difference to one technology in temporal or spatial dimension. The improved LCA and sensitivity analysis implicates that traditional LCA usually prefers straw-made biomass pellets technology, while improved LCA sometimes prefers straw-made biogas technology. The improved LCA method is more suitable for reflecting the reality and scientizing decision-making.

Abstract:Agricultural biodiversity usually leads to greater sustainability in production practices. To understand the environmental implications of the development of village-level multi-cropping in rural China, we compared the environmental impact of a highly diverse vegetable multi-cropping system to a conventional wheat/maize rotation system based on the method of life cycle assessment (LCA). Using household level cultivation data, this study examined the gate-to-gate environmental impacts of on-site cultivation practices relating to the production of 10,000 nutrient equivalent units. Results show that vegetable multi-cropping resulted in decreased average land requirement, and diesel, water and electricity usage by 69.8%, 62.2%, 71.7%, and 63.4%, respectively, while average nitrogen (Total N), phosphorus (P2O5), and potassium (K2O) usage in vegetable multi-cropping systems decreased by 16.3%, 42.1%, and 75.8%, respectively. Additional corresponding effects led to a decrease in the total global warming, eutrophication, and acidification potentials from external inputs by 21.6%, 16.7%, and 16.2% of the entire system, respectively. Moreover, the midpoint human toxicity potential from pesticide usage of the vegetable multi-cropping system was lower than that of the conventional system. However, the midpoint eco-toxicity potential from pesticide usage was higher due to certain highly toxic substances, and both human and eco-toxicity potentials from heavy metals were all higher by a few orders of magnitudes. Thus, to mitigate these detrimental consequences, some related measures are proposed for sustainable practices in the future implementation of multi-cropping systems.

Abstract:Life cycle assessment (LCA) was applied to analyze a food-processing wastewater treatment plant and investigate the economic and environmental effects of the plant. With the long-term operational data of this plant, an inventory of relative inputs, e.g., flow rate, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and suspended solids, etc., and outputs of the plant, e.g., effluent COD and suspended solids, methane production, etc., was compiled. The potential environmental effects associated with those inputs and outputs were evaluated, and the results of the inventory analysis and impact assessment phases of the plant were interpreted. One feature of this study was the assessment of the treatment plant based on both energy and material flows. Another feature was the establishment of an assessment model with an integration of plant operating parameters, system recognition and grey relation. The analytical results are helpful for the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants.
Integrated Life Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Remediation of Contaminated Agricultural Soil in China

Abstract:Agricultural land degradation is posing a serious threat to global food security. Restoration of the degraded land has traditionally been viewed as an inherently sustainable practice; however, restoration processes render consequential environmental impacts which could potentially exceed the benefit of restoration itself. In the present study, an integrated life cycle assessment analysis was conducted to evaluate life cycle primary, secondary, and tertiary impacts associated with the restoration of the contaminated agricultural land. The results demonstrated the importance of including spatially differentiated impacts associated with managing the land and growing crops. Comparing four risk management scenarios at a contaminated field in Southern China, it was found that the primary and secondary impacts followed the order of no action > chemical stabilization > phytoextraction > alternative planting. However, when tertiary impacts were taken into account, alternative planting rendered much higher footprint in comparison with phytoextraction and chemical stabilization, which provides evidence against an emerging notion held by some policy makers. Furthermore, assuming that the loss of the rice paddy field in Southern China is compensated by the deforested land in the Amazon rainforest, the total global environmental impact would far exceed that of no action, resulting in 687 ton CO2-e ha–1 of climate change impact. Abstract:Cereals have been the basis of human and animal nutrition for centuries, and according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) (2020), between 1961-2019 their global production increased by +240%, reaching about 3 billion tons, accounting for 18% of climate-changing emissions from the agro-food sector. Continued population growth will lead to the need to produce more food, and to keep up it is estimated that cereal production will need to increase by 900 million tons by 2050, posing an inevitable increase in environmental pressures. Therefore, the new challenge will be to reconcile increased production with sustainable agricultural practices, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Since cereal production is essential to produce globally relevant commodities, it is important to assess and study its associated environmental effects. In this context, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is recognized by the international scientific community as a useful tool for the assessment of environmental impacts caused by products, processes or systems and for the validation of new production paradigms. Therefore, the aim of this research is to carry out an overview of the literature on the most recent applications of LCA related to the production of cereals, in order to highlight the main criticalities, also according to the different production methods of the various Countries. Therefore, the three major cereals (corn, wheat and rice) and five minor ones (barley, sorghum, millet, oats and rye) were considered and the results showed that for all crops the main hotspot is the application and use of fertilizers. However, studies often differed in terms of functional unit, impact assessment methods, and respective environmental indicators. Therefore, a complete comparison was not always possible. Finally, the literature overview did not identify studies in which the social impacts of cereal production were considered, although economic assessments are present in some cases. Therefore, it is believed that consistent with the achievement of the SDGs, it is desirable to apply Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) in agricultural and development policies to consider not only environmental impacts, but also economic and social impacts, in order to ensure a truly sustainable development and thus on all three dimensions
