Abstract:The main drawback of traditional predictive vector quantization (PVQ) is the time consuming encoding process. In order to reduce the computational complexity, an algorithm called mean value predictive vector quantization (MVPVQ) is proposed in this paper. Input vectors are classified into smooth vectors and non-smooth vectors before encoding. Different kinds of input vectors are encoded with different encoding schemes. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve satisfying image quality at low bit rates.

The basic idea is to assign different weight values to different discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients such that the SVM training algorithm. learns the decision?, surface according to the relative importance of DCT coefficients in the training data set. The weight values used in SVM training are based on the energy distribution characteristic of each image subblock. Simulation results show it achieves better reconstruction quality than the standard JPEG and SVM-based compression algorithms.

Abstract:As an efficient technology for lossy data compression, vector quantization (VQ) is widely used in the field of image coding with the virtues of simple algorithm and high compression rate. ITU-H.264 is a video coding standard published in March, 2005. The framework of H.264 is not much different compared to those previous standards, but it improves each function by adopting mature techniques, so H.264 has the highest coding efficiency, yet with highest complexity. Generally speaking, H.264 is still a video compression based on transformation. Considering the weakness of high complexity of H.264 and the advantage of simple structure and low coding complexity of VQ technology, this paper proposes a novel predictive VQ based video compression scheme, which uses H.264 standards coding method for reference and combines VQ techniques. It uses the minimax partial distortion competitive learning method to generate a public codebook, making sure that only codeword indices need to be transmitted after video sequence compression. It uses the mean-distance-ordered partial codebook search algorithm for fast code vector searching, which uses the mean of input vectors to reduce the computing expense dramatically without performance loss. Experiment results show that this scheme, with the reduction of the computing complexity and the promotion of coding efficiency, gives a tradeoff of expense and quality. It can be used in real time occasions and mobile handset equipments with limited computing capability.

Abstract:Several neighboring pixels based prediction schemes were proposed by exploiting the statistical relationship between pixel distance and correlation.And an edge adaptive predictive VQ scheme was proposed for images containing distinct edge characteristics.Simulations demonstrate the improved predicting accuracy and coding performance of the proposed predictive VQ algorithms for image coding applications constrained at a low computational complexity level.

Abstract:An efficient hybrid image vector quantization (VQ) technique based on a classification in the DCT domain is presented in this letter. This algorithm combines two kinds of VQ, predictive VQ (PVQ) and discrete cosine transform domain VQ (DCTVQ), and adopts a simple classifier which employs only three DCT coefficients in the 8 × 8 block. For each image block, the classifier switches to the PVQ coder if the block is relatively complex, and otherwise switches to the DCTVQ coder. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve higher PSNR values than ordinary VQ, PVQ, JPEG, and JPEG2000 at the same bit-rate.

Three inequalities based on the characteristics of sums and variances of a vector and its two sub-vectors are introduced to reject a larger number of codewords. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Vector quantisation (VQ) shows a good performance for image coding with high-compression ratios. However, there are many difficulties for image coding with VQ, especially the edge degradation and high-computational complexity. To resolve these two problems, the authors propose a new coding method based on edge orientation patterns (EOPs) by classifying image blocks into nine classes according to their edge orientations. For colour image coding, 27 codebooks (nine for each colour component) are pre-designed based on a series training images. In the encoding stage, an input colour image is decomposed into Y, Cb, and Cr components, and each component image is divided into non-overlapping 4 x 4 blocks. For each block, eight edge orientation templates of size 4 x 4 are performed to determine its edge orientation. According to the edge orientation, each block is compressed by using the corresponding codebook. Essentially, the authors' scheme is a kind of classified VC (CVQ). Simulation results show that, their EOP-based CVQ can largely improve the compression efficiency as well as speeding up the encoding process and it is sufficient to establish effectiveness of the authors' algorithm as compared with the existing techniques.
A Fast Image Coding Algorithm Using Variable-Rate Mean-Match Correlation Vector Quantization

Abstract:A variable-rate mean-match correlation vector quantizer, MMCVQ, is presented as an alternative vector quantizer of side-match vector quantizer (SMVQ) for fast image encoding. Before encoding, the mean values of all codewords are computed, then a sorted codebook is obtained according to the ascending order of the mean values of codewords. During the encoding stage, high correlation of the adjacent image blocks and mean values of the current processing vector and codewords are considered to obtain the state-codebook of the current processing vector. The experimental result shows: (1) the encoding time of MMCVQ is almost 7 times faster than that of full-search VQ and almost 42 times faster than that of SMVQ, and (2) compared with SMVQ, the encoding quality will increase more than 1 dB in PSNR, and (3) the bit rate of MMCVQ is smaller than that of SMVQ by 0.03-0.05 b/pixel

Abstract:Vector transform coding (VTC) has been shown to be a promising new technique for image and video compression. Vector transformation (VT) reduces inter-vector correlation and preserves intra-vector correlation much better than scalar-based transforms such as the discrete cosine transform (DCT) so that vector quantization (VQ) in the VT domain can be made more efficient. In addition to finding a good vector transform, another important aspect of VTC is the codebook structure and bit-allocation in the VT domain. Vectors with different indices in the VT domain have very different characteristics. Given a total number of bits, the question is now to construct the codebooks and allocate bits to the vectors so that distortion is minimized. A new multi-layered codebook structure and a dynamic bit-allocation scheme have been developed. The main advantage of this method over a fixed bit-allocation scheme is that distortion is controlled by dynamically allocating more bits to vectors causing larger distortions and less bits to vectors causing smaller subband coding into vector case so that scalar-based operations are replaced by vector-based operations. In VSC, an image is first decomposed into a set of vector subbands (VSBs) using a vector filter bank (VFB), and then VQ is performed on all vectors in each VSB. The proposed VFB not only reduces inter-vector and inter-band correlation, but also preserves intra-vector correlation. This property makes the subsequent VQ much more efficient and allows large coding gain over conventional subband coding.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. VQ utilizes the high correlations between neighboring pixels in a block, but disregards the high correlations between the adjacent blocks. Unlike VQ, Side match VQ (SMVQ) exploits codeword information of two encoded adjacent blocks, the upper and left blocks, to encode the current input vector. However, SMVQ doesn’t consider edge characteristics of the current input vector and its neighboring vectors at all. Variable-rate SMVQ has been proposed in the literature that exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of the upper and left codewords. However, this block classifier didn’t take the variance of the current input vector itself into account. Based on this, variable-rate SMVQ with a new block classifier called new CSMVQ is proposed. This classifier uses the variance of the input vector together with variances of its neighboring encoded blocks to encode the input vector. Experimental results show that new CSMVQ can obtain lower bit rate than VQ and old CSMVQ. Moreover, new CSMVQ can obtain higher image quality than SMVQ, old CSMVQ and VQ. In addition, new CSMVQ needs shorter encoding time than old CSMVQ.

Abstract:Vector quantization (VQ) is an attractive image compression technique. VQ utilizes the high correlation between neighboring pixels in a block, but disregards the high correlation between the adjacent blocks. Unlike VQ side-match VQ (SMVQ) exploits codeword information of two encoded adjacent blocks, the upper and left blocks, to encode the current input vector. However, SMVQ is a fixed bit rate compression technique and doesn't make full use of the edge characteristics to predict the input vector. Classified side-match vector quantization (CSMVQ) is an effective image compression technique with low bit rate and relatively high reconstruction quality. It exploits a block classifier to decide which class the input vector belongs to using the variances of neighboring blocks' codewords. As an alternative, this paper proposes three algorithms using gradient values of neighboring blocks' codewords to predict the input block. The first one employs a basic gradient-based classifier that is similar to CSMVQ. To achieve lower bit rates, the second one exploits a refined two-level classifier structure. To reduce the encoding time further, the last one employs a more efficient classifier, in which adaptive class codebooks are defined within a gradient-ordered master codebook according to various prediction results. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new image compression scheme by introducing visual patterns to nonlinear interpolative vector quantization (IVQ). Input images are first distorted by a generic down-sampling so that some details are removed before compression. Then, the distorted images are compressed lossly by traditional image coding scheme and transmitted to the decoder. In the decoder side, VQ indices are extracted from the decoded images to reproduce the removed details from a pre-trained codebook. One of main contributions in this paper is, we introduce visual patterns on designing the codebook, where only removed details that contain visual patterns and their original counterparts as pairs are trained. Experimental results show: (1) visual pattern blocks are easy to form clusters than original blocks; (2) the proposed scheme achieves much better performance over JPEG in terms of visual quality and PSNR.

Abstract:A new vector quantization scheme called Address-Dependent Vector Quantization (ADVQ), which exploits interblock correlation, is discussed. Kohonen's self-organizing feature map (SOFM) algorithm is improved and employed to design tree-structured codebooks. Simulation results show that the scheme can achieve higher compression ratio than the standard VQ and requires fewer computations.

Abstract:The concept of vector transform coding (VTC) is examined. It is noted that the optimal transform for the purpose of vector quantization should reduce the correlation between the transform domain vectors and preserve the correlation among the components within each vector. An intrinsic coupling factor is defined to quantitatively measure how closely the components are coupled within a vector, and a bit-allocation mechanism is derived to assign bits to the transform domain vectors. Following the guidance of such a general study, a new scheme is proposed for image and video compression. Simulation results show excellent subjective quality at a bit-rate of 3.3 Mb/s.< >

Abstract:Block truncation coding (BTC) is an efficient block coding technique suitable for real-time image compression, and it has high channel error resisting capability and good reconstructed image quality. Absolute moment ETC (AMBTC) is a simple and fast variant of ETC, The main shortcoming of the original AMBTC algorithm is the high bit rate (normally 2bits/pixel). In order to reduce the bit rate of AMBTC, an efficient ETC image compression algorithm with vector quantization (VQ) is presented in this paper. The main idea of the proposed algorithm is to reduce the number of bits required to code the higher mean, the lower mean and the bit plane, which are created by AMBTC for each image block. On the one hand, a simple look-up-table method is presented for coding the higher mean and the lower mean of a block. On the other hand, vector quantization technique is introduced to reduce the number of bits used to code the bit plane. Test results prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, a new and fast encoding algorithm for vector quantization is presented. This algorithm makes full use of two characteristics of a vector: the sum and the variance. A vector is separated into two subvectors: one is composed of the first half of vector components and the other consists of the remaining vector components. Three inequalities based on the sums and variances of a vector and its two subvectors components are introduced to reject those codewords that are impossible to be the nearest codeword, thereby saving a great deal of computational time, while introducing no extra distortion compared to the conventional full search algorithm. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is faster than the equal-average nearest neighbor search (ENNS), the improved ENNS, the equal-average equal-variance nearest neighbor search (EENNS) and the improved EENNS algorithms. Comparing with the improved EENNS algorithm, the proposed algorithm reduces the computational time and the number of distortion calculations by 2.4% to 6% and 20.5% to 26.8%, respectively. The average improvements of the computational time and the number of distortion calculations are 4% and 24.6% for the codebook sizes of 128 to 1024, respectively.
