Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between the level of macular pigment and vernier acuity, and verify the association between macular pigment density and visual function. Methods The macular pigment optical density(MPOD) was measured in the right eye of 116 adult subjects with heterochromatic flicker photometry.Fifteen subjects with an MPOD over 0.90(high MPOD) and 15 subjects with an MPOD less than 0.40(low MPOD) were asked to participate in vernier acuity testing.Vernier acuity was measured by a forced-choice test.A t-test was used to analyze the difference in vernier acuity between the two groups. The relationship between MPOD and vernier acuity was analyzed using a Pearson correlation test. Results The mean MPOD was 0.64±0.30(log unit) for 116 subjects. The vernier acuities were 8.35 ±2.45 and 11.53±3.56 seconds of arc for the high and low MPOD groups, respectively. There was a significant difference in vernier acuity between the two groups(t=-2.884,P=0.008).And MPOD was significantly correlated with better vernier acuity(r =-0.401,P =0.028).Conclusion Vernier acuity is better in the group with higher MPOD.The higher the MPOD,the finer the value of the vernier acuity, resulting in better vernier acuity.More research should be done to further prove and explore the relationship between MPOD and visual function.
