Abstract:This work investigates the interactions in NOX chemistry during biomass co-combustion in a continuous lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed reactor. Co-combustion experiments were performed at air staged and unstaged conditions, and the gas composition in the flue gas and within the reactor was measured. The used biomass fuels were straw, sunflower husk, sewage sludge, and sunflower seed. Based on the NO concentration in the flue gas, straw-sunflower husk and straw-sunflower seed co-combustion were additive, while co-combustion of straw and sewage sludge revealed a synergy effect. The main cause was the presence of sewage sludge ash, which could catalyse the formation of NO from NH3 and HNCO, and possibly HCN. The catalytic effect of the ash increased with lower ash preparation temperature and better mixing of the ash with straw. During straw-sewage sludge co-combustion, the NH3 initially released from sewage sludge favoured the reduction of NO, while at later stages, when a significant amount of ash accumulated in the bed, the catalytic oxidation of NH3 to NO was dominant. Compared to air unstaged conditions, the NO emission was reduced and the impact of ash on the nitrogen chemistry was less pronounced at air staged conditions.

Experimental Study and Simulation of NOx Formation by Oxygen-enriched Combustion in a Mini-CFB

Abstract:Oxygen-enriched combustion tests in a circulating fluidized bed(CFB)were carried out under the condition of real flue gas recirculation.It is found that there are a lot of differences in NO_x formation law between the condition of simulated gas and real flue gas recirculation.Based on the experimental results,a NO_x formation model for oxygen-enriched combustion in CFB boiler was set up.The influence of bed temperature and oxygen concentration on NO_x formation were investigated in the model.Results show that NO_x formation increases obviously with raising temperature and oxygen concentration under different atmospheres.Under the oxygen-enriched atmosphere,NO_x formation becomes more sensitive to the variation of the temperature,and will be influenced by different coal ranks and addition of limestone.The calculated results agree well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Abstract Continuous measurements of the CO, CO2 and NO emissions were made during the burning of batches of char particles of different diameters at temperatures of 750 K to 1000 K. The fractional conversion of fuel nitrogen to NO was derived from the experimental data as a function of char burnout, and shows that the fraction of char-N converted to NO increases with increasing char burnout and with increasing temperature. A simplified model was developed to simulate the fate of char-N during char combustion. A closed form approximate expression was derived for NO emission which lakes into account the influence on the NO formation of the parallel diffusion and chemical reaction of the O2 into the pores, and the NO partial destruction by the reaction with CO (carbon as catalyst) or with carbon as it diffuses out of particles. Abstract:Nitrous oxide formation during char combustion was investigated at a batch scale electrically heated qartz tube fluidized bed reactor. Experimental results showed that HCN oxidation is a nitrous oxide formation path during char combustion. The reaction of NO with char particle surface also contributes to nitrous oxide formation. HCN is from char devolatilization during combustion. The role of HCN oxidation on nitrous oxide formation becomes slight when char prepare temperature increases, whereas the heterogeneous reaction of NO with particle surface becomes dominant for nitrous oxide formation.

Abstract:On the test rig of a small-sized fluidized bed an experimental research was conducted of the formation of nitrous oxide during the combustion of anthracite coke. It has been found that the oxidation reaction of HCN during the combustion of the coke represents an avenue of conversion of coke nitrogen to N_2O. At the same time the multi-phase reaction of NO and coke surface is also a kind of generation path of N_2O. The separation-out of HCN is a result of the further devolatilization during the combustion of coke. On completion of the coke devolatilization process N_2O has originated from the gas-solid multi-phase reaction of NO and coke surface.

Abstract:The formation of NO, NO 2 , N 2 O and N 2 from fuel-bound nitrogen species during the combustion of a coal slime (CS) and its char (CS char) were investigated in a laboratory bench-scale fluidised bed reactor by tracking the N-containing gas species using a gas chromatograph and an electrochemical gas analyser. Quartz sand with a particle size fraction of 0.3–0.38 mm was used as the bed material. A stream of an Ar/O 2 mixture of varying O 2 concentration was used as the oxidant and fluidisation gas. The effect of operating temperature (900–1300 K), initial O 2 concentration (3–8%), fuel feed rate (0.0041 g min −1 for CS, 0.0036 g min −1 for CS char) and C/O 2 mole ratio (0.14–0.78) on carbon burnout, NOx, N 2 O and N 2 formation were systematically studied. It was found that the oxidation process of CS in the fluidised bed is controlled by mass diffusion under the tested conditions. N 2 , N 2 O and NO concentrations in the flue gas during CS combustion were higher than during CS char combustion under the same experimental conditions due to the presence of the greater N content in CS (1.56%) than in CS char (1.34%). At low combustion temperatures of 900 K and 1000 K, the fuel-N was mainly converted to NO and N 2 O. However, as the operating temperature increased, NO and N 2 became the dominating species in both the CS and CS char combustion experiments. The NO concentration increased with increasing initial O 2 concentration due to enhanced oxidation of char-N. Comparing the N 2 formation data during CS and CS char combustion, it is inferred that in the presence of volatile, fuel-N was preferentially converted to N 2 .

Abstract:Carrier-phase direct numerical simulation of detailed NOx formation in pulverized coal flames (PCC) with fuel-bound nitrogen is conducted in a 3D temporally evolving mixing layer setup where Lagrangian particles (Colombian bituminous coal) in an air stream (upper half of the domain) mix with the products of lean volatile/air combustion in the lower stream. The release of fuel-N is represented by ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and a lumped nitrogenated tar (pyridine). Devolatilization is modeled by fitting a 2-step pyrolysis approach to the detailed heterogeneous PoliMi kinetics. A comprehensive homogeneous mechanism including all standard pathways of NOx and pyridine oxidation is adopted. Results show a partition of NO in two distinct branches of scatter plots of NO mass fraction vs. volatile mixture fraction after flame establishment, corresponding to NO in the lower stream flame region and hot spots near the upper stream. The contribution of NO2, prompt, and thermal mechanisms to total NOx is limited in the early stages of PCC. The main source of NO is fuel-N, with NH being the most important precursor. Pyridine plays an important role for NO production in the upper stream through CN formed from CHCHCN. CN and ammonia oxidation have the highest contribution to NH production. Regarding NO destruction, NO reactions with HCCO, CHi and C through the reburn process constitute the largest share. NO conversion to N2O by NH followed by conversion of N2O to N2 and <math>NO+N→N2+O</math> are the two most important pathways directly reducing NO to N2.

Abstract:Numerical calculations of the laminar counterflow diffusion flames of methane-air are conducted to quantitatively study NO formations from different reaction pathways (mechanisms) at various pressures and/or initial air temperatures. A modified method, which deactivates the initiating reactions in a specific reaction pathway only for NO production while maintaining interactions with other pathways, is developed to calculate NO formation in each mechanism. Results indicate that in the thermal, prompt, N2O, and NNH reaction mechanisms, the NO production rate largely increases as the pressure or the initial air temperature increases, and in particular, as these two parameters are increased together as in a practical combustion system. In the thermal pathway, as the pressure is increased to 15 atm, NO is produced almost entirely on the fuel-lean side. In the prompt pathway, NO production generally occurs in regions with the progress variable ranging from 0.8 to 0.95; the maximum NO production rate moves from the fuel-rich towards the stoichiometric region as the pressure is increased. NO formation from the N2O or NNH mechanism occurs mainly at high pressures, but the corresponding production rate is an order of magnitude smaller than that from the thermal or prompt mechanism, respectively. In all the reaction mechanisms, NO consumption occurs through the reburn mechanism on the fuel-rich side, and the consumption rate significantly increases as the pressure and initial air temperature increase. Results herein provide a quantitative understanding of the effects of pressure and temperature on NO formations from different reaction mechanisms.

Abstract:A carrier-phase direct numerical simulation (CP-DNS) of a coal/ammonia co-firing flame in a turbulent mixing layer is performed with a detailed chemical reaction mechanism including NOx formation. The combustion characteristics and NOx formation mechanism of the coal/ammonia co-firing flame are investigated in detail through a conditional reaction pathway analysis. A new four-fuel-stream flamelet model is proposed to adapt to the piloted pulverized coal/ammonia co-combustion system, in which the complex mixing among the volatiles, char off-gases, ammonia, and the pilot stream is characterized with four mixture fractions. The flamelet solutions in the fourfold mixture fraction space are transformed into a uniform space to facilitate the access to the flamelet table. The performance of the flamelet model is evaluated through an a priori analysis, a combustion mode analysis, and a chemical timescale analysis. For the turbulent coal/ammonia co-firing flame studied, two distinct flame fronts within the shear layer are observed with the upper part being dominated by ammonia combustion and the lower part being governed by coal combustion. The conditional analyses show that NO species is mainly generated by the lower layer governed by pulverized coal combustion where the nitrogen-containing species from volatile combustion are highly involved in the NO formation. The NO concentration first increases with decreasing the fraction of ammonia in the local computational cell, and then decreases towards pure pulverized coal combustion, which is characterized with a newly introduced manifold coordinate. While the temperature and the major and intermediate species mass fractions in the coal/ammonia co-firing flame can be reasonably predicted by the proposed flamelet model, the NOx species mass fractions are not well predicted in the region where pulverized coal combustion dominates. It is clarified that the inaccurate prediction of the NOx species is not caused by interpolation errors, multiple combustion modes or the kinetics of NOx formation, but mainly attributed to the definition of the progress variable.

Abstract:Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion is considered to be one of the most promising carbon capture technologies due to its low energy consumption and high carbon capture rate. Part of the combustion-supporting environment is composed of circulating flue gas, so the concentration of steam in the carrier gas is higher than that of conventional combustion. However, as an important factor in this technology, steam has not been mentioned in the vast majority of studies. In this study, combustion experiments simulating wet flue gas recycling were performed in a pressurized tube furnace to analyze the effects of the steam ratio (0-40%), oxygen concentration (21-50%), and pressure (0.1-0.6 MPa) on the formation of NO x . The results show that increased system pressure significantly inhibits NO emissions during the oxy-fuel combustion process. Meanwhile, the increase of the injected steam concentration enriches the various radical pool compositions in the carrier gas, inhibiting the formation of NO and N2O. In contrast, the increase of the combustion temperature promotes and inhibits the formation of NO and N2O, respectively, during oxy-fuel pressurized combustion. Moreover, elevated oxygen concentration enhances the oxidation of the carrier gas, leading to an increase in NO emissions.

Abstract:In this work, the attention is focused on the conversion of fuel-N, volatile-N and char-N to NOx and N2O of two types of coal (anthracite with low volatile content and bituminous with relatively high volatile content) in fluidized bed combustion. The experiments are carried out in a single particle combustion test rig, the mass reduction of burning coal particle, NOx and N2O formation in the flue gas are measured. The influence of temperature (1043, 1103, 1163 K) on the conversion of fuel-N, volatile-N and char-N to NOx and N2O is also investigated. The experimental results show that about 70% – 80% of all the NOx produced is formed from char-N for both two types of coal, while 20% – 30% of all the NOx produced is formed from volatile-N. About 45% of all the N2O produced is formed from volatile-N for anthracite, and for bituminous more than 70% of all the N2O produced is formed from volatile-N. With the combustion temperature of 1043 K, the conversion of char-N to NOx is more than 80% for anthracite, while the conversion of volatile-N to NOx is only 36% for anthracite. For bituminous, the conversion of char-N and volatile-N to NOx is both about 45%. About 5% of the volatile-N yields N2O, and 4% of char-N yields N2O for anthracite, while more than 12% of the volatile-N yields N2O and only 2% of char-N yields N2O for bituminous.

Abstract:The nitric oxide (NO) formation in methane (CH4) flames has been widely investigated, with quite a few kinetic mechanisms available in the literature. However, studies have shown that there are often discrepancies between the simulations using various mechanisms and the experimental results. To elucidate reactions leading to these discrepancies, experiments were designed to measure the NO formation in the post flame zone of CH4+O2+N2 flames with the oxygen ratio, x O 2 = O2/(O2+N2), varying from 0.2 to 0.27. The experiments were carried out on a heat flux burner at atmospheric pressure and 298 K using saturated Laser-induced fluorescence. The equivalence ratio, ϕ, was changed from 0.7 to 1.6. The corresponding laminar burning velocity, SL , for each condition was also measured using the heat flux method. A comparison was made for the present experimental data and simulation results using the Konnov, Glarborg, NOMecha 2.0, and San Diego mechanisms, and none of them well reproduced the new NO experimental data for all investigated conditions. Numerical analyses show that the increment of NO mole fraction in stoichiometric and fuel-lean flames when the x O 2 increases is mostly defined by the thermal-NO production, which is found to be over-predicted, especially by the Konnov and San Diego mechanisms. The rate constant of reaction NO+N = N2+O was derived as k = 1.529 × 10 13 T − 0.0027 exp ( 185.41 [ c a l / m o l e ] R T ) cm3 / mol s over 225–2400 K temperature range. The rate constants of four reactions controlling CH mole fraction profiles and prompt-NO formation were updated based on the analysis of the literature data that yields an improved performance of the Konnov mechanism.

Abstract:Oxy-fuel fluidized bed combustion IS a novel clean-biomass utilization technology. The NO and N2O emissions during oxy-fuel combustion of a single biomass particle at fluidized bed temperature were studied in a flow tube reactor. The method of isothermal thermogravimetric analysis was used to distinguish the devolatilization and char combustion stages of biomass combustion. This work is aimed to study the effects of temperature, CO2 concentration, atmosphere and O-2 concentration, H2O vapor addition, and biomass type on the NO and N2O emissions during oxy-fuel combustion of a single biomass particle at fluidized bed temperature. In oxy-fuel combustion, NO is rapidly formed during the devolatilization stage, while N2O is mainly formed during the char combustion stage. In 30% O-2/70% CO2 at T = 800 degrees C, the conversions of fuel-N to NO and N2O are 11.96% and 18.98%, respectively, The conversion of fuel-N to NO reaches the maximum value at T = 800 degrees C during the devolatilization stage, while it increases with increasing temperature during the char combustion stage. In addition, the conversions of fuel-N to N2O decrease with increasing temperature during the two stages. In oxy-fuel combustion, CO2 suppresses the NO emission and promotes the N2O emission, and H2O vapor addition promotes the NO and N2O reductions. Compared with air combustion, lower conversions of fuel-N to NO and higher conversions of fuel-N to N2O are observed during the two stages in oxy-fuel combustion. During the two stages, the total conversions of fuel-N to NO and N2O are of fuel-N to NO reach the maximum values at (O-2) = 30%, and the conversions of fuel-N to N2O decrease with increasing O-2 concentration. A higher fuel-N content in biomass leads to higher NO and N2O yields but lower conversions of fuel-N to NO and N2O during the two stages. The present results contribute to understanding the NO and N2O emission mechanisms during oxy-fuel fluidized bed combustion.

Abstract:A series of experiments were performed to investigate the relationship between syngas composition (H2/CO/CO2/N2/O2) and NO formation. Laser-saturated fluorescence measurements of NO in a premixed syngas flat flame from a heat flux burner were recorded for various fuel compositions, dilution ratios and equivalence ratios. Quantitative measurements were compared with the predictions from CHEMKIN software using four different chemical mechanisms, i.e., GRI mech 3.0, Chemical Reaction Engineering and Chemical Kinetics 1407, GDF-Kin 3.0, and the Mendiara and Glarborg mechanism; each mechanism included reaction subsets for NOx formation. These models were validated against a CH4 flame; the GDF-Kin 3.0 mechanism produced the best agreement with measurements. NO measurements for CO/H2 syngas fuel with 50% CO2 dilution at various equivalence ratios found the maximum NO production near stoichiometry. The majority of NO produced for these conditions is predicted to come from the combination of the NNH and N2O pathways. Investigation of NO production during combustion of different CO/H2 ratio syngas diluted with 60% N2 showed that increasing the H2 fraction decreased the total NO concentration. However, normalizing the NO production rate by the fuel mass consumption rate showed H2 produces more NO per gram of fuel consumed. Predictions of temperature and NO rate of production along the flame axis showed that the syngas with high H2 content had a flame front closer to the burner exit and NO production rate greater than the high CO case. Dilution of CO/H2 syngas fuel with N2 and CO2 showed that CO2 has a stronger reduction in NO emission than N2. GDF-Kin 3.0 predicted that dilution with CO2 caused a greater reduction in flame temperature than the same volume of N2. Predicted NO rate of production and reaction sensitivity analysis predicted that the Zel’dovich pathway was dominant for undiluted syngas. However, as the flame temperature reduced, the Zel’dovich pathway was inhibited to a greater extent than the N2O and NNH pathways so that, at high dilution, NO production was driven by the N2O and NNH pathways.

Abstract:As a kind of air pollutant, nitrogen oxide cause serious human, environmental and ozon layer issues. Non-ammonia catalytic materials have a more simple and environments-friendly reaction process without secondary pollution, and therein are considered as an ideal catalyst for the reduction of NO in the flue gas of cement kilns. In this paper, the denitrification performance of coal gasification slag was investigated systematically at different temperatures and oxygen concentrations in cement kiln flue gas. The transformation mechanism of NO was studied by analyzing the changes of surface element valence state, the adsorption and desorption of NO and the formation of intermediate during the reaction process. The results show that the conversion rate of NO in flue gas can reach 83.49 % when the temperature is 1000 °C and the oxygen concentration is 1 %. The charged ionic groups are generated by the isomorphous substitution of Fe3+ in coal gasification slag, and play an important role in the decomposition of NO as active components. It can increase the number of surface oxygen vacancies, and accelerate the fracture of NO bonds into active components; Meanwhile, Fe3+ could coordinate with O− and NO− (generated by NO fracture) to form Fe3+-O− and Fe3+–NO−, which can be decomposed into Fe2+, N2 and O2 at high temperature.

Abstract:This work presents an experimental study on the NO emission characteristics of coal combustion with carbide slag addition. Combustion experiments were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor to investigate the effects of Ca/S molar ratio, oxygen concentration and reaction temperature on the transformation of fuel nitrogen to NO emission. Further, a pilot test was performed in a 30 kW CFB reactor to study the influence of carbide slag on the NO emission. Experimental results show that using carbide slag and a high Ca/S molar ratio promoted the fuelN/NO conversion rate. The main contribution to the fuel-N/NO conversion rate increment was the catalytic role of carbide slag in the char-N/NO conversion process. The promotion effect of carbide slag on fuel-N/NO conversion was weakened at a higher temperature and lower O2 concentration. The pilot test results verified that using carbide slag promoted NO emission. Based on the test results, the fuel-N conversion route and the NO formation process during coal combustion with carbide slag addition were presented.
Intensification of NO x Conversion over Activated Coke by Ozone Oxidation for Sintering Flue Gas at Low Temperatures

Abstract:Denitration (De-NOx) over activated cokes (ACs) for sintering flue gas needs intensification. Gaseous reactions in a gas mixture containing NO, NO2, and NH3, with the effect of O2 concentration and moisture, were taken into consideration in the study of NOx conversion over ACs. Experimental studies on NOx conversion with and without NH3 over ACs were conducted using a fixed-bed reactor at 100 °C. The results demonstrated that moisture significantly affected NOx removal over ACs, especially the NO2 conversion. Under dry conditions, a disproportionation reaction of NO2 over ACs dominated NOx conversion with no NH3, whereas apparent fast selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over the ACs was observed in the presence of NH3. Regardless of the presence of absence of NH3 in wet mixtures, NO2 adsorption on ACs via the disproportionation route dominated the NOx conversion. Increasing the NO2/NO ratio in the simulated flue gas enhanced the NOx conversion rate over ACs. −C(ONO2) deposition on ACs generated by the disproportionation route inhibited NOx conversion with time. O3 oxidation was found to be efficient in increasing the NO2/NO ratio and intensifying the NOx conversion compared with commercially direct NH3-SCR over ACs. Increasing the temperature and decreasing the gas hourly space velocity can promote NOx conversion over ACs after O3 oxidation. NO oxidized with O3 coupled with NH3 spray and continuous regeneration of ACs is a potential method for removing NOx from sintering flue gas.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The interaction of coal particles and recycled/recirculated flue gas (RFG) with elevated temperatures and low levels of oxygen occurs in various pulverised coal combustion scenarios. In this work, the effect of oxygen level and temperature on single coal particle combustion characteristics and NO x formation in N2 diluent is studied by means of fully-resolved particle simulations. Comprehensive gas-phase kinetics are utilised to consider the critical pathways of NO x formation including tar-N. Results show that higher RFG temperatures decrease the time to reach the peaks of temperature and species profiles and increase the corresponding peak values. When decreasing O2, irrespective of the RFG temperature, the fuel release period is prolonged, the volatile combustion time increases and the combustion process becomes overall less intense. The reduction of O2 in RFG results in a significant decrease of NO production, while the reduction of the RFG temperature has a smaller effect. The analysis of the key reactions that contribute to NO production in the region around stoichiometry shows that fuel-NO x is the major contributor. Both NH3 and HCN in fuel-N play a major role, while tar-N only contributes in the case with the lowest temperature and O2 concentration. The classical NO x formation pathways are negligible and the initiation reaction of the Zeldovich mechanism is even reversed, i.e. NO ⟶ + N N 2 is dominant and contributes to NO destruction. The destruction of NO mainly occurs in a rich region close to the particle surface where abundant tar species and their derivatives play a major role for NO destruction via the re-burn mechanism. The prompt mechanism is also active in this region and eventually contributes to NO reduction via production of HCN which is the feed to the re-burn mechanism.

Dominant Chemistry and Physical Factors Affecting No Formation and Control in Oxy-Fuel Burning

Abstract:NO formation in oxygen-enriched counterflow methane diffusion flames has been computationally studied with detailed chemistry and transport properties. Particular interests are the identification of the dominant chemistry in the production of NO and the investigation of the sensitivity of NO production due to effects of air infiltration, fuel contamination, flame radiation, and aerodynamic straining when applying oxy-Fuel combustion as a control technique for NO emissions. It is shown that oxygen displacement significantly modifies the diffusion flame structure from the familiar one obtained with air as the oxidizer with thermal NO gradually replacing Fenimore NO as the dominant production pathway with increasing oxygen enrichment. Based on GRI-Mech 2.11, the net production of NO through the Fenimore mechanism is shown to be negative in oxygen-enriched combustion such that simulation of NO formation in oxy-fuel combustion by considering thermal mechanism alone will yield an overprediction of NO emissions. Important reactions leading to NO formation and destruction are also identified and compared under various levels of oxygen enrichment. It is further demonstrated that NO emission is very sensitive to the extent of air leakage and that it is advantageous to apply oxy-fuel control with even more than 0.6% nitrogen contamination of methane, provided that there is no severe air infiltration in the oxidizer stream. For the nonadiabatic oxygen-enriched combustion with radiative heat loss, the net production through Fenimore mechanism is negative over a wide range of strain rate, while NO emissions decrease with increasing strain rate. The study suggests that because NO formation can be substantially reduced with increasing strain rate and because oxy-fuel combustion is more resistant to stretch-induced extinction, the strategy to minimize effects of air infiltration and fuel contamination is to operate the burner at high turbulence intensities and, thereby, correspondingly high local strain rates.

Abstract:Nitrogen conversion during char-O 2 combustion with a high initial-NO concentration (char-O 2 /NO combustion) is an important issue for low-NOx technologies and oxy-fuel combustion technologies, such as air/fuel-staged and flue gas recycling combustion. This study employed both experimental and numerical methods to investigate the mechanisms of N conversion and formation during char-O 2 /NO combustion. In the numerical model, the mass and heat transfer processes are governed by unsteady convection-diffusion partial differential equations. The numerical results agree well with the experimental findings, assuming NO is the sole primary N-containing product. Based on the numerical results, the effects of reaction conditions on N conversion were decoupled. As the O 2 /fuel stoichiometric ratio increases, the char-N release rate substantially rises, and the shrinkage of pore surface area becomes significant, leading to poorer NO reduction performance. With an increase in initial-NO concentration, the apparent conversion of char-N to NO decreases, while the NO reduction efficiency remains almost unchanged. Due to the lower temperature sensitivity of mass transfer limitations in the char-NO reaction compared to the char-O 2 reaction, NO reduction performance is enhanced at higher reaction temperatures.
