Applicability of drawings based on self-assessment of Tanner stages among urban Chinese adolescents

Abstract:Objective To explore the applicability of a drawings based on self-rating of Tanner stages method in estimating sexual maturation among urban adolescents.Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2 569 students of 4th to 12th grade in Shanghai selected by stratified cluster sampling method.Self-reported pubertal maturation level was obtained by drawings and written descriptions of Tanner stages of breast,genital and pubic hair development.Meanwhile,visual depiction of Tanner stages of breast,genital and pubic hair development were rated by a trained same gender rater.Results Fair to moderate agreements were found between self-and rater's assessments in male's genital development and pubic hair growth(Kappa coefficients: 0.173 and 0.296,respectively;Kendall's correlation coefficients:0.559 and 0.700,respectively),and in female's breast development and pubic hair growth(Kappa coefficients:0.152 and 0.415,respectively;Kendall's correlation coefficients:0.614 and 0.711,respectively).Adolescents who were older,had relatively higher level of pubertal stages tended to underestimate their actual pubertal maturation level;while male subjects and overweight or obese subjects were more likely to overestimate.Adolescents of richer families tended to rate their pubertal maturation more precisely.Conclusion The drawings based self-rating method can be used to measure pubertal development stages among urban Chinese adolescents to some extent.But subjects' age,gender,relative pubertal stages,BMI,family economic situation and other factors should be considered.
