Abstract:N-Type fused-ring molecular semiconductors based on dithienothiophen–pyrrolobenzothiadiazole derivatives (BTP-4F, also known as Y6) have been widely employed in organic solar cells. However, the relationship between their chemical structures, crystal packing motifs and intrinsic charge-transport properties almost remains unclear. Herein, the single-crystal packing motifs of four BTP-4F derivatives are manipulated by using selenium substitution and end-group variation and the corresponding structure–property relationships are elucidated. It is found that the choice of end groups (fluorination or chlorination) mainly determines the crystal packing topology while the selenium substitution affects the detailed dimer geometries, both of which can affect the electronic reorganization energy and electronic coupling. Among the four molecules, the molecule after fluorination and selenium substitution (BTPOSe-F) shows the highest electron mobility through both Marcus theoretical calculation (3.04 cm2 V−1 s−1) and single-crystal organic-transistor measurement (0.14 cm2 V−1 s−1), which is mainly due to BTPOSe-F’s low electronic reorganization energy and extremely high electronic coupling value in its unique Yc-dimer packing geometry. Therefore, we believe that this work may further guide the design of next-generation n-type materials for organic solar cells.
