Abstract:The water quality health risk of water distribution system was analyzed,the concepts and the calculation methods of health risks of any single chemical pollutant in a region,area-superposed risk and system-integrated risk were put forward,and the health risk assessment model for water quality in distribution system was established,including region division,data collection and analysis,hazard judgment,exposure assessment,dosage-response assessment,risk characterization and risk management.The results of one case studied with this model show that the model combines the water quality with the public health risk,which has some direction significance for the health risk management of water distribution system.

Abstract:This article analyzed the relationship between sensitivity of a γ -ray density meter and the radiation source. All work was based on the numeric simulation by GEANT4 system. We conclude that a lower energy radiation source gives higher sensitivity, and the position and collimation characteristic of the source have little influence on sensitivity of the system.

Abstract:A computer simulation and the statistical analysis of the inspected data on the typical points in the sea area nearby are developed to research the distribution of PWR nuclear power station's liquid ejections around the Daya Bay. At the same time the relevant mathematical models are set up. Then Lagrange's interpolation, with n points subsection two-member-quadratic and four-line linear weighted, is developed to carry out the computer simulation, and calculated the density distribution in the sea area of 3H which is a kind of radioactive nuclide. The result shows: the data drawn from this calculating method are almost no difference from those calculated by hyrodymamics equation. Therefore, this calculating method is reliable.

Abstract:The removal cross section method and the buildup factor method have been used to calculate the dose equivalent distribution of neutron and gamma rays permeating through the primary shielding layer of underwater radiator respectively. With this distribution, Cherenkov light spectrum and flux distribution in 3 m water layer radiator after -rays permeating through secondary shielding layer and follow-up water layer have been simulated with Geant4. In addition, considering the geometry dilution and water attenuation for Cherenkov light propagating through some thickness of the pure water layer, the size of Cherenkov light spot and the intensity distribution were obtained.

Abstract:After the damage of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, a great number of radioactive materials were released into the Pacific Ocean. Therefore, it is necessary to research on the temporal and spatial distribution of these radionuclides. We use Princeton Ocean Model to simulate the circulation of the coast water of Fukushima NPP and obtain the concentration of caesium-137 by solving the diffusion equations. We employ the Monte Carlo N-particle(MCNP) code to assess the external doses caused by these contaminated sea water. To improve the efficiency and effectiveness of volume source in MCNP code, we establish a transformation method between spot source and volume source, and determine an appropriate range of volume source. Finally, we calculate the absorbed doses of every organ/tissue and the effective dose of a human body.

Abstract:This article mainly presents the application of Geant4 package (Geant4.7.0, 2005), developed by CERN (the Center of European Research of Nucleus), in medical physics and a novel technique, namely, hadrontherapy. The distribution of energy deposition in a water model by different radiation beams was also given. The results show that the distributions for proton beams are completely different from those for other radiation beams. Charged particles like protons exhibit little scattering when they penetrate the matter and give the highest energy deposition near the end of their range just before they reach the resting state. These characteristics permit very precise control of the shape of the energy distribution inside the patient's body.

Abstract:A large number of radionuclides were discharged into oceans after the Fukushima nuclear crisis. In this paper, we employed ROMS to simulate the circulation of water around Japan. We evaluated the temporal and spatial distribution of radionuclides originated from Fukushima NPP, such as: Cs-137, Cs-134 and I-131. Then, we utilized MCNP 5 to assess the external nuclear impact of these nuclides in water and obtained the effective dose rate distribution in the coast water around Fukushima NPP.

Abstract:Japan suffered a M9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011, which caused the serious damage of Fukushima nuclear power station with the subsequent tremendous tsunami. The leaking radioactive contaminants sincerely threat the safety of marine creatures and coastal residents. Therefore, the numerical simulation on the spread of the radioactive contaminants is a challenging and necessary issue. Generally speaking, there are two major aspects to predict the spread of the leaking materials in oceans. The first aspect is applying an Oceanic General Circulation Model to simulate the transportation process of ocean itself. The second aspect is employing a numerical simulation approach (Lagrangian methods or Eulerian methods) to predict the concentration variation of the radioactive contaminants in oceans. This article reviews these two aspects, namely the popular Oceanic General Circulation Models and the simulation approaches on the spread of radionuclides in oceans.

Abstract:Angular and radial distributions of the energy deposition of γ-ray radiation in scin-tillation optical fibres are simulated and analysed using the Geant4 system.The results showa linear relation between the energy deposition and the radius of the fibres.The deposition isroughly inversely proportional to sinθ with θ the incident angle relative to the fibre axis.Theresults could provide corrections to the measurements of the scintillation fibres used in monitoringthe γ-ray radiation.

Abstract:The management of coolant leakage in a Nuclear Reactor Containment is important to ensure the safe operation of a facility and preserve the structural integrity of the containment. This paper conducts the comprehensive analysis using the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software CFX to assess the concentration distribution and motion of Xe-133 in a typical Nuclear Reactor Containment. Guidelines from the previous studies about the gas distribution in the containment are followed in the simulation. The containment model with detailed internal structure is established and divided into unstructured meshes. Analyses are carried out to quantify the Xe-133 distribution for three cases. These were (1) behavior analysis of Xe-133 for a given short period of time, (2) behavior analysis of Xe-133 for a given long period of time, (3) the effect of various leak rates and leak sources on Xe-133 distribution. The results indicate that the increasing rate of Xe-133 concentration is almost completely proportional to the leak rate of reactor coolant. The varying leak rates and leak sources have no significant impact on homogeneous distribution of leaking radionuclides in containment. The monitor of Xe-133 can ensure timely response to coolant leakage. This paper contributes to a reasonable design of the reactor coolant leakage detection system. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Objective: This study developed a three-dimensional visualization method for presenting the geometric pattern of the relative dose generated by Monte Carlo (MC) simulation and validated the simulated dose values against the physical measurement. Methods: In fluoroscopy and interventional radiology examinations, relatively high level of occupational dose is delivered to healthcare workers due to prolonged radiation exposure in imaging procedures. As the spatial difference in dose is never negligible, the scatter radiation distribution under fluoroscopic exposures is thus worth investigating. MC simulation is a sophisticated statistical method, which has been widely applied for modeling scatter radiation in general X-ray examination room. However, the application and validation of MC simulation under fluoroscopy setting have not been found yet. In this study, a stack of tissue equivalent slabs were used as the object under fluoroscopic irradiation. EGSnrc-based DOSXYZnrc code was applied to simulate the scatter dose distribution and the physical measurement of radiation dose was performed using an ionization chamber radiation detector. Results: At 19 representative locations taking into account the work area and radiosensitive organs of healthcare workers, the trend compliance of the simulated with the measured dose values was examined using the correlation analysis. A significant monotonic association between the MC simulation and physical measurement of dose values was identified ( r s =0.822 and P <.01). At the same horizontal distance from the irradiation axis, it was observed that the air dose was relatively higher at the level of gonad region than at the eye level. Conclusions: The proposed visualization approach illustrates a three dimensional dose simulation in local display density, which arouses the awareness about prolonged radiation exposure in clinical environment. The reliability and validity of the simulation were examined.

Abstract:In this paper, some numerical simulation studies on long distance transport of hazard materials from an accident of a nuclear powerstation have been showed with the Hysplit-4 model of Air Resource Laboratory, NOAA, USA. Two kinds of studies have been done : 1) A verification study shows that the Hysplit-4 model has successfully simulated the long distance transport process of radioactivity materials from Chenobyl accident site in 1986 to Munich. 2) the focus of attention of the differences of the geographic distribution of the radiactivity concentration fields between winter seasons and summer seasons has been made in case that the severe accident of Qingshan like Chenobyl would occur based on the historical meteorological fields in January or in July from 1992 to 2001. Furthermore, by making averaging of the simulated data of the concentration fields of cases separately in January or in in July, we obtain two groups of the geographic distribution of the concentration fields of hazard materials in 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The results show us that the effect region and the intensity of hazard materials are larger in winter than in summer.

Abstract:For increasing the regulation accuracy and efficiency, commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software Fluidyn-PANACHE was induced to assist in the analysis of typical radionuclides atmospheric diffusion for the Chinese nuclear safety regulation. The atmospheric dispersion simulation system that used three-dimensional CFD methods, combined three-dimensional GIS, and multiple technical methods, such as boundary values calculation, body-fitting mesh generation, and refinement, was established to simulate and discuss the local wind field characteristics, pollutant transportation, and spatial distribution patterns under spot or constant meteorological conditions following unsteady (real time) or steady methods, respectively. This method can be used to reasonably simulate the turbulent and circumferential flow around large cooling towers in the inland nuclear power plant, compensating the shortage in subtleness of the standard Gaussian model, as well as shortage in realizing multiwind direction simulation in the calculation by the traditional CFD model. The calculation results of annual average atmospheric dispersion factor under normal operation indicated the seasonal differences, with maximum average dispersion factor in autumn, which were consistent with those suggested by Gaussian mixture model. Consequently, it is reasonable to avoid refueling overhauling in autumn to diminish pollution. The CFD numerical simulation method, which has a high agreement with the results of physical tests such as wind tunnel test, provides a new reference for the nuclear safety review of inland nuclear facilities in China.

Abstract:Not only the mean glandular dose (MGD) but also the glandular dose distribution is important in describing the radiation exposure to breast in mammography. For a more precise knowledge of the absorbed dose distribution in the breast, experimental measurements with thermoluminescence dosemeter and Monte Carlo simulations with Geant4 were performed in this study. The experimental measurements with homogeneous physical breast phantoms were used to validate Monte Carlo simulations of homogeneous mathematical breast models undergoing mammography. Then a 3D detailed breast model with a compressed breast thickness of 4 cm and a glandular content of 50%, which has been constructed in previous work, was used to study the absorbed dose distribution inside the breast undergoing mammography. Furthermore, the effects of the glandular tissue distribution on MGD were studied by reversing the breast model in head-toe direction to get a breast model with a different distribution of glandular tissues.
Study on Estimating the Dose for 6 MV X-ray Partial-Body Irradiation Using Contaminated Poisson Technique

Abstract:Objective To explored the applicability of estimation of the dose and irradiated fraction using the contaminated Poisson method in partial-body simulated exposures and medical exposures with 6 MV X-rays. Methods Partial-body accidental irradiations were simulated by in vitro irradiation of blood from healthy volunteers. The dicentric plus ring aberrations were analyzed by simulated 20%,50%,80% exposure to 2,4 Gy of 6 MV X-rays. Three cancer patients treated with radiotherapy were included in the study. Blood samples of the patients were obtained 24 h before and after treatment. Lymphocytes were cultured in the usual way and metaphases were scored for dicentric and centric ring aberrations. The dose and fraction of cells irradiated were estimated by the contaminated Poisson method. Results The lymphocytes of 80% exposure to 2 Gy and 20%,50%,80% exposure to 4 Gy showed an overdispersed distribution of dicentrics plus rings,and their estimates of irradiation dose and irradiated fraction fell within 30% of the true values in simulated partial-body irradiation. The 2 Gy radiotherapy in the pelvic region and the fraction of irradiated red bone marrow being larger than 20% or radiotherapy in the skull region involving large dose (3 Gy) of 6 MV X-rays produced an overdispersed distribution of dicentrics plus rings. The estimates of irradiated fraction were consistent with those of the fraction of irradiated red bone marrow of the red marrow of whole body. At the higher dose of radiotherapy (3 Gy),the dose estimate,which was 23% off,was a good accuracy to attain. It is noted that the results in vivo were in good agreement with those of simulated partial-body irradiation from cancer patients. Conclusion Contaminated Poisson method will be feasible in the assessment of dose and fraction in accidents involving larger dose partial-body exposure.

Abstract:Absorbed dose distributions in dental and maxillofacial cone beam computed tomography (dental CBCT) are essential to dental CBCT dose indices. Direct measurements by thermoluminescence detectors are laborious. We establish a valid GEANT4 based absorbed dose simulation program with mean deviation being 7.25% compared to experimental measurements. Dental CBCT absorbed dose distributions simulated by this program indicate : The distributions are not always symmetry; Non-symmetry cases are when phantom center is departured from isocenter, half-fan beam with 360° scan angle range and some case full-fan beam with less than 360° scan angle range; Dose index weights for circular symmetry absorbed dose distributions are quite different for fields of view diameter bigger and smaller than phantom diameter.
