Abstract:Terephthalic polyesters are important engineering plastics and can crystallize into multiple crystal phases, including the mesophase in processing. However, the formation process and structural characteristics for the unique long-range ordered mesophase of terephthalic polyesters are still not well understood. Herein, we investigated the crystal polymorphism, crystallization kinetics, phase transition, and mechanical properties of a medium-chain terephthalic polyester, poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT). A new long-range ordered mesophase (named as the delta phase) is discovered for PHT during quiescent melt crystallization at a low crystallization temperature (T-c = 10-30 degrees C). However, the alpha and beta crystal phases are crystallized at a medium (40-80 degrees C) and high (90-130 degrees C) T-c, respectively. The mesomorphic delta phase has a long-range order with a layered structure and inclined chain packing, which shows faster chain relaxation and smaller lamellar thickness than the alpha and beta phases. The mesomorphic delta phase is metastable and converts into the stable beta phase upon heating or high-temperature annealing. Mechanical properties of PHT can be well tuned by crystal polymorphs. The mesomorphic delta phase of PHT has good transparency and ductility, while the alpha and beta phases possess a higher yield strength and modulus. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the mesophase formation and complex crystal polymorphism of terephthalic polyesters.

Abstract:Effects of the isothermal crystallization temperatures of poly(vinylidene fluoride), T(IC,PVDF), on polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, fractional crystallization, and enzymatic degradation of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) in crystalline/crystalline blends have been investigated. The crystal modifications of PBA can be regulated by T(IC,PVDF). Lower T(IC,PVDF) (e.g., 80 °C) facilitates the formation of PBA α crystals in both the isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallizations and also favors the β-to-α phase transition of PBA upon annealing at elevated temperatures. This might be attributable to the decreased equilibrium melting temperature of PBA when T(IC,PVDF) is decreased. Higher T(IC,PVDF) is favorable for the fractional crystallization of PBA, which tends to segregate in the interlamellar regions of the PVDF matrix under these conditions. PBA shows faster enzymatic degradation in the blends with a lower T(IC,PVDF) than those with a higher T(IC,PVDF), attributable to the preferential formation of α crystals at a lower T(IC,PVDF). This study provides a new method to control the crystal modification and physical properties of polymorphic polymers in their blend systems.

Abstract:Poly (trimethylene-co-ethylene terephthalate) with various compositions of diol has been synthesized. The crystallization of copolyesters with high comonomer content was observed by both wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that the copolyesters become less crystallizable with the involvement of the comonomer, the crystals of crystallizable copolyesters come from PTT or PET homopolymers. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the copolyester increases with increasing PET component in the copolyester, and the relationship between T-g and composition obey both Fox equation and additive law, the former is better in describing this relationship.

Abstract:A semicrystalline poly(trimethylene monothiocarbonate) (PTMMTC) has been synthesized via the selective and alternating copolymerization of carbonyl sulfide and oxetane. This reaction was catalyzed by (salen)CrCl accompanied by organic bases over a wide range of temperatures from 40 to 130 degrees C. PTMMTC is shown to exhibit similar crystallization behavior to high-density polyethylene (HDPE), be., being spherulite and possessing melting temperatures (T-m) up to 127.5 degrees C and a degree of crystallinity (X-c) of up to 71%. Moreover, PTMMTC has a wide processing temperature window of ca. 100 degrees C.

Abstract:The properties and structures of terephthalyl chloride (TPC) modified poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) with TPC mole content in acylchloride from 5% - 15% were studied in this paper. The composition and structure of the copolymer were determined by H-1 NMR. The content of TPC moiety in the molecular chain was calculated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) were used to analysis the thermal properties of TPC modified PMIA copolymer. The results show that by introducing TPC units in the PMIA molecular chain, PMIA copolymers with better thermal properties were prepared. With the increase of TPC content, the TPC modified PMIA exhibit increasing thermal stability. The pyrolysis process of the copolymer was detected by FTIR spectra. When the copolymers were pyrolyzed to 500 degrees C, an aryl nitrile band at 2230 cm(-1) appears in the FTIR spectrum. This means that at this temperature breakage of the amide bond occurred.

Abstract:The influence of N,N,N′,N′-tetraalkyl terephthalamide (TATA) on the isothermal crystallization kinetics of polypropylene (PP) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found that TATA shows a heterogeneous nucleation effect and leads to the formation of β-PP. TATA can not only shorten the crystallization time but also heighten the crystallization temperature of PP. The crystallization rate constant of PP containing TATA is larger than that of pure PP. The evolution of crystalline morphology of PP was investigated on a polarized optical microscopy (POM) equipped with a hot stage and the results showed that the introduction of TATA into PP can quicken the crystallization of PP, which is consistent with DSC results. TATA also leads to a substantial decrease in the spherulite size of PP and the boundaries of spherulites are hardly distinguished.

Abstract:The effect of N,N,N′N′-tetraalkyl terephthalamide (TATA) on the crystallization of polypropylene (PP) was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X-ray diffraction and polarized optical microscopy. It was found that the addition of TATA effectively induced the formation of β-crystalline form of PP. With the increase of TATA content both the total crystallinity degree (x) and crystallinity degree for β-crystalline form (xβ) of PP increased significantly, while the crystallinity degree for α-crystalline form (xα) decreased. Polarized optical micrographs indicated that the addition of TATA led to a substantial decrease in the size of spherulites of PP and the boundaries of spherulites were hardly distinguished. TATA could significantly improve the impact strength, flexural strength and modulus of PP, while the tensile strength of PP did not change greatly with TATA content.

Abstract:Aliphatic–aromatic copolyesters of poly(butylene adipate-co-butylene terephthalate) [P(BA-co-BT)] with wide copolymer compositions were synthesized by melt polycondensation. Solution 13C NMR analyses show that the copolyesters are statistically random copolymers of BA and BT units. Their solid-state microstructures and thermal properties were investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), solid-state 13C NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The WAXD shows that the copolyesters with 10–25 mol% BT contain PBA crystals, while those with 27.5–80 mol% BT contain PBT crystals. In contrast, solid-state 13C NMR analyses demonstrate that the copolyesters with 20–30 mol% BT units contain both PBA and PBT crystals, but the minor one cannot be detected by X-ray diffraction due to the small sizes and amounts. Both the melting temperature and crystallinity of copolyesters show minimum values at around 25 mol% BT content which is the transition point from PBA crystal structure to PBT crystal structure. The composition dependences of melting temperature, crystallinity, crystallization rate and spherulite morphology are discussed and correlated to the biodegradability of the P(BA-co-BT) copolyesters.

Abstract:Thermal and crystalline properties of random copolymer of ?-caprolactone (CL) and 2,2-dimethyl trimethylene carbonate (DTC) prepared by lanthanum tris(2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate) (La(OAr)3) have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). Fox equation interprets the relationship between glass transition temperature (T g) and copolymer compositions. T g decreases from PDTC (16.7°C) to PCL (-65.1°C), reflecting the internal plasticizing effect of CL units on DTC units in the copolymers. The introduction of CL units to PDTC can effectively improve its heat resistance. Small amount of DTC (5% molar) in PCL chain improves the mechanical properties of the polymer, which had elongation of 1000, much higher than that of PCL (8.8).

Abstract:The melt of crystalline polymers normally crystalize on cooling and the polymer melts with low critical cooling rate would easily solidify as glass during cooling to their glass transition temperature ( T g ). The glassy process exhibits variety within each kind of polymer melts in the slope of the viscosity-temperature visibility, and the rate of the excess conformational entropy in the polymer melt over the crystalline phase changes in the T g approaching. Polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) and a series of polytrimethylene terephthalate copolyesters (PTTG) with different molar ratios of 1,3-propylene glycol (1,3-PDO) to 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (1,4-CHDM) were synthesized to modify the chain flexibility and the critical cooling rate. The glassy samples were obtained via quenching the melts of PTT and copolymers below the T g to characterize the cold crystallization behaviors. The evolutions of the crystalline structure of the amorphous samples were in situ investigated via DSC and simultaneous WAXS/SAXS approaches during heating. The polymer chain dynamics and the critical cooling rates of the PTT and copolymers were estimated by rheological testing and DSC characterization. The results indicate that the chain conformation adjustment of PTT and copolymers is relate to the comonomers in the copolymers, and the cold crystallization behaviors can be divided into three temperature ranges during heating. The first involves rapid transition from a pre-ordered phase to a crystalline phase, the second is the adjustment of defects in an imperfect crystalline phase, and the third may refer crystal reorganization before melting. The crystallization ability of the samples could be due to the ability of chain conformation adjustment with comonomer content till the crystallization is no longer obvious during heating. The cold crystallization behaviors of the samples were discussed based on the polymer chain dynamics and it is convinced that would be helpful to understand the crystallization and processing of polymers.

Abstract:A series of copolyesters based on poly(trimethylene terephthalate) derived from 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (TFDCA) have been successfully synthesized by the melting polymerization. Microstructures and molecular weights were characterized by H-1 NMR and size exclusion chromatography (SEC), respectively. Meanwhile, thermal properties, crystallization behaviors, and crystal structures were investigated by DSC, TGA, and WAXD. The results confirmed the copolymer compositions were nearly equal to the feed compositions. The weight molecular weights were all higher than 21000 g/mol for all polyesters synthesized. With increasing the TFDCA content, the glass transition temperature decreased slightly due to the weaker rigidity of the thiophene ring. DSC and WAXD results demonstrated that the isodimorphic behavior occurred for poly(trimethylene 2,5-thiophe-nedicarboxylate-co-trimethyleneterephthalate)s (PTTTFs). When TFDCA content was 25%, PTTTF25 exhibited the moderate tensile strength (53.1 MPa). However, the high elongation at break (396%) was observed due to the beta relaxation and strain-induced crystallization.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was blended with two different poly(oxybenzoate-p-trimethylene terephthalate) copolymers, designated T28 and T64, with the level of copolymer varying from 1 to 15 wt %,. All samples were prepared by solution blending in a 60/40 (by weight) phenol/tetrachloroethane solvent at 50degreesC. The crystallization behavior of the samples was studied by DSC. The results indicate that both T28 and T64 accelerated the crystallization rate of PET in a manner similar to that of a nucleating agent, The acceleration of PET crystallization rate was most pronounced in the PET/T64 blends with a maximum level at 5 wt % of T64. The melting temperatures for the blends are comparable to that of pure PET. The observed changes in crystallization behavior are explained by the effect of the physical state of the copolyester during PET crystallization as well as the amount of copolymer in the blends. Abstract:Aliphatic poly(monothiocarbonate)s synthesized by alternating copolymerization of carbonyl sulfide (COS) and epoxides are a new type of crystalline polymers. In this work, the isothermal crystallization behavior and spherulite morphology of poly(trimethylene monothiocarbonate) (PTMMTC) and poly(ethylene monothiocarbonate) (PEMTC) are studied. PTMMTC tends to form banded spherulites, especially at low crystallization temperatures, while PEMTC forms non-banded spherulites. The overall crystallization rate and spherulitic growth rate of PTMMTC are larger than those of PEMTC at the same degree of supercooling. PTMMTC with longer alkane segment in the main chain has a higher equilibrium melting temperature (Tm0) than PEMTC. Both polymers exhibit double melting peaks, but the formation mechanisms are different for PTMMTC and PEMTC. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) result reveals that more amorphous phases are located in interlamellae of PTMMTC, leading to a larger long period (L) and a thicker amorphous layers (la), which can account for the stronger tendency of PTMMTC to form banded spherulites. The melting enthalpies of PTMMTC and PETMC crystals with 100% crystallinity (ΔHm0) are obtained by extrapolating the melting enthalpies of the samples with different crystallinities. The free energy of the folding surface (σe) of PTMMTC is larger than that of PETMC, indicating that the PTMMTC chain is stiffer. The higher Tm0 and larger ΔHm0 and σe of PTMMTC can be attributed to its stronger interchain interaction.

Abstract:The crystallization and melting behavior are closely related not only to the external conditions such as undercooling and cooling rate, but also to the chain structure characteristics such as isotacticity distribution. The isotacticity distribution of three commercial isotactic polypropylenes (iPP) used in this work was characterized using Temperature-Rising Elution Fractionation (TREF) combining with Size-Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). Their crystallization and melting behavior were observed by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM). The results indicated that for iPP with similar molecular weight and isotacticity, the difference in isotacticity distribution not only led to the variation in nucleation and growth rates of crystal, but also changed the perfection of crystals formed under the same condition, even causing the formation of different crystalline modification and the change in the equilibrium melting temperature. Abstract:The isotactic polypropylene prepared under the supercritical conditions was compared with that obtained by a conventional slurry polymerization with respect to the isothermal crystallization kinetics by Perkin Elmer differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Nikon E600 optical polarimeter (OP) with on-line hot stage, respectively. The results indicate that isothermal crystal radius growth rate of supercritical isotactic polypropylene (sc-iPP) with lower molecular weight and narrower its distribution is faster than that of common isotactic polypropylene (c-iPP). Moreover, crystallinity of sc-iPP is higher than that of c-iPP. The resulting crystals of sc-iPP have negative character and tend heterogeneous nucleation. On the contrary, the obtained crystals of c-iPP present heterozygosis birefringence and prefer homogeneous nucleation. Furthermore, Both sc-iPP and c-iPP are spherulites and show thermal nucleation. Base on these, crystallization activity energy and Avrami exponent of both sc-iPP and c-iPP were calculated, respectively.
Nonisothermal Crystallization Behavior of Biodegradable Poly(Butylene Terephthalate-Co-Butylene Adipate-Co-Ethylene Terephthalate-Co-Ethylene Adipate) Copolyester

Abstract:A series of biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyester, poly(butylene terephthalate-co-butylene adipate-co-ethylene terephthalate-co-ethylene adipate) (PBATE), were synthesized from terephthalic acid (PTA), adipic acid (AA), 1,4-butanediol (BG) and ethylene glycol (EG) by direct esterification and polycondensation. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of PBATE copolyesters was studied by the means of differential scanning calorimeter, and the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics were analyzed via the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny, Ozawa analysis and Z.S. Mo method, respectively. The results show that the crystallization peak temperature of PBATE copolyesters shifted to lower temperature at higher cooling rate. The modified Avrami equation could describe the primary stage of nonisothermal crystallization of PBATE copolyesters. The value of the crystallization half-time (t(1/2)) and the crystallization parameter (Z(c)) indicates that the crystallization rate of PBATE copolyesters with more PTA content was higher than that with less PTA at a given cooling rate. Ozawa analysis was not suitable to study the nonisothermal crystallization process of PBATE copolyesters, but Z.S. Mo method was successful in treating this process. POLYM. ENG. Abstract:A series of multiblock copolymers poly(ethylene terephthalate)-co-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PET-X%-E-P-E) were synthesized from dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), ethylene glycol (EG) and poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol) (E-P-E) with a two-step procedure via melt polymerization. The structure, composition, crystallization behavior, and thermal stability of the synthesized copolymers were determined by 1H-NMR, FT-IR, XRD, DSC, and TGA measurements. All samples exhibited good thermal stability at a Td-5% above 300°C. DSC results revealed an increment trend of crystallization ability of copolymers in lower E-P-E content and then decreased when E-P-E concentration gradually raised to 40 wt%. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of copolymers were investigated systematically; the incorporation with E-P-E segments significantly enhanced the toughness and water absorption ability. Impact strength increased from 670.46 to 4448.75 J/m2, and water absorption values raised from 0.7% to 3.4% of the content of E-P-E increased. The stress–strain curve exhibited that tensile strength reduced from 40.38 to 17.88 MPa, the elongation at break increased from 4.6 to 27.9%. These new tough PET materials have an important application in toughness polyester fiber by the melt-spinning techniques.

Abstract:An impact polypropylene copolymer (IPC) was fractionated into three fractions using n-octane as solvent by means of temperature-gradient extraction fractionation. The glass transitions, melting, and crystallization behavior of these three fractions were studied by modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). In addition, successive self-nucleation and annealing (SSA) technique was adopted to further examine the heterogeneity and the structure of its fractions. The results reveal that the 50 degrees C fraction (F-50) mainly consists of ethylene-propylene random copolymer and the molecular chains may contain a few of short but crystallizable propylene and/or ethylene unit sequences; moreover, the lamellae thicknesses of the resulting crystals are extremely low. Furthermore, 100 degrees C fraction (F-100) mainly consist of some branched polyethylene and various ethylene-propylene block copolymers in which some ethylene and propylene units also randomly arrange in certain segments, and some polypropylene segments can form crystals with various lamellae thickness. An obvious thermal fractionation effect for F-100 samples after being treated by SSA process is ascribed to the irregular and nonuniform arrangement of ethylene and propylene segments. Abstract:The miscibility behaviors in blends of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and polybutene-1 (PB) have been studied using in-situ FTIR imaging. The heterogeneous melt of 3/7 iPP/PB blends were formed at 250, 220, and 180 degrees C and then quenched to the same crystallization temperature of iPP at 125 degrees C, respectively. Evolution processes of composition distribution during crystallization were monitored according to their characteristic peaks, and the results suggest a trend from local concentration to uniform dispersion of PB fraction. Further studies of the PB fraction as the distance from the growth front of iPP spherulite indicate an irreversible phase behavior with the progress of thermal history. The cyclic melting and crystallization favor the mixing of iPP/PB blend. Meanwhile, the nonlinear growth rate of iPP spherulite is mainly responsible for compatible promotion of iPP/PB blend, which hinders the transportation of iPP chains to its growth front. Abstract:Copoly(ethylene terephthalate-imide)s (PETIs) were synthesized by the melt copolycondensation of bis(2-hydroxyethyl)terephthalate with a new imide monomer, N,N′-bis[p-(2-hydroxyethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]-biphenyl-3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxydiimide (BHEI). The copolymers were characterized by intrinsic viscosity, Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. Although their crystallinities decreased as the content of BHEI units increased, the glass-transition temperatures (Tg) increased significantly. When 5 or 10 mol % BHEI units were incorporated into poly(ethylene terephthalate), Tg increased by 10 or 24 °C, respectively. The thermal stabilities of PETI copolymers were about the same as the thermal stability of PET, whereas the weight loss of PETIs decreased as the content of BHEI units increased. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
