Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
2D XANES–XEOL Spectroscopy Studies of Morphology-Dependent Phase Transformation and Corresponding Luminescence from Hierarchical TiO2 Nanostructures

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 nanostructures with the nanograss at the top and the close-ended nanotube at the bottom were synthesized by an extended electrochemical anodization process. Upon thermal annealing, the hierarchical TiO2 nanostructures exhibit a morphology-dependent phase transformation behavior: the amorphous as-prepared nanotube layer undergoes an amorphous-anatase-rutile phase transformation upon annealing at 550 degrees C and 850 degrees C, respectively; the nanograss, on the other hand, remains in the anatase phase with an annealing temperature up to 850 degrees C and becomes anatase-dominant anatase-rutile-multiphase at 900 degrees C. In addition, the nanotube and nanograss exhibit intriguing light-emitting properties. A two-dimensional Xray absorption near-edge structure X-ray excited optical luminescence (2D XANES-XEOL) spectroscopy technique is used to investigate such phenomenon, which correlates the origin of the luminescence with the local chemical entrainment of the nanostructured TiO2. Implications of these observations are thoroughly discussed. These properties are desirable for the engineering of novel TiO2 nanoheterostructures for photocatalysis as well as optical and photonic devices, especially the fabrication of a stable high temperature anatase phase.
Acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation toward controllable synthesis of multiphase mesoporous TiO2 for effectively enhance photocatalytic H2 evolution

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) polymorphs photocatalysts containing two or more crystal phases have customarily been synthesized at high temperature using complicated procedures or expensive equipment, accompanied by the formation of by-products. Therefore, here, we propose an effective acid-regulated hydrolysis and condensation of titanium cation strategy to directly synthesize mesoporous TiO2 with controllable phase junctions. In the method, poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride (PDADMAC) is used as the structure directing agent to produce mesostructure, and hydrochloric acid (HCl) is used as the acid regulator and coordination agent to adjust the hydrolysis and condensation modes of Ti4+, thereby controlling the crystal structure and phase junctions of synthesized mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs. Furthermore, since the heterophase junctions and mesostructure effectively improve the separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-holes, the obtained R74B26 with unique brookite and rutile phase junctions owns the highest photocatalytic activity among all obtained samples, the evolution rate of H2 is 8.98 mmol h‐1−1 g−1. This work will open up new perspectives toward the synthesis of mesoporous polycrystalline material for various potential applications.

Synthesis of Well-Ordered Mesoporous Titania with Tunable Phase Content and High Photoactivity

Abstract:Using TiCl4 and Ti(OBu)(4) as the precursors and Pluronic P123 as the template, mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) is successfully prepared by the nonhydrolytic evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method with a three-dimensional mesostructure obtained. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (XRD) show that the pore wall is composed of both anatase and rutile phases. Transmission electron micrograph observations (TEM) reveal a well-ordered open-pore mesostructure. N-2 adsorption analysis exhibits a narrow pore size distribution. Photodegradation of phenol shows that the sample has a better photoactivity than Degussa P25. Further investigations on the effect of the "acid-base pair" find that by changing the molar ratio of TiCl4/Ti(OBu)(4), both the pore texture and phase composition can be well-controlled. A high content of TiCl4 is considered to favor the formation of regular mesostructures and a proper weight ratio of anatase/rutile as well, which can finally affect the photocatalytic efficiency of the sample.

Abstract:A new composite Structure with Superior pholocatalytic activity for phenol decomposition was prepared by reaction between TiOSO4 and a synthetic layered clay laponite. The high photocatalytic activity resulted from the unique structure of the composite., in which anatase nanocrystals were attached oil leached laponite fragments. The new materials are distinctly different from the conventional TiO2-pillared days in structure. which are microporous solids with small TiO2 particles (a few nanometers in size) as pillars. The large number of the anatase crystals (the active sites) and better accessibility to the sites by UV light and reactant Molecules are the major factors enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Important structural properties of the porous composites, such as specific surface area. pore structure, and size of the anatase crystals, were tailored by modulating the Ti/clay ratio and the hydrothermal synthesis temperatures. The performance of the catalysts is related to their structural features, and it is found that tile catalytic activity increased with increasing size of the anatase crystals in the catalysts. specific Surface area, and mesopore size.

Abstract:A favorable micro-nanostructure is crucial for obtaining superior properties. However, the synthetic techniques for synthesizing the complex morphology still remain a challenge. In this work, we synthesized core-shell-structured submicrometer-sized mesoporous TiO2 microspheres (MTMs) constructed with mesoporous TiO2 polyhedrons through a novel anisotropic etching route. The outer shell of the obtained TiO2 microsphere is constructed by a mesoporous TiO2 single-crystal nanopolyhedron with exposed (101) facets. Hydrogen peroxide was used as the bubble generator, which simultaneously acted as gas templates for the formation of TiO2 microspheres. Fluorine ions facilitate the formation of anatase (001) facets at reaction. The anisotropic etching accrued along the [101] direction with an increase in fluorine ions, leaving mesoporous structures and highly exposed (101) facets. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), using the as-prepared product as a light-scatting layer, showed a 29.4% increase in conversion efficiency.

Abstract:Monodisperse spherical and mesoporous Eu-doped TiO2 phosphor particles were prepared by nonionic surfactant-assisted soft-chemistry method. It is shown that the phosphor particles possess submicron diameter of about 250nm and narrow size distribution. Under ultraviolet irradiation the particles show characteristic luminescence corresponding to D05-Fj7 of Eu3+. Especially, the calcined particles consisted of mesopores and semicrystalline framework shows the strongest photoluminescence compared to the amorphous particles without annealing and the completely crystalline particles annealed at higher temperature. This is attributed to the energy transfer from titania nanocrystallite to Eu3+ ions dispersed in glassy amorphous titania region.

Abstract:The understanding and control of the structural complexity of mesoporous semiconductors with single-crystal-like nature are both attractive and challenging. Here, we report a crystallization-driven epitaxial assembly from monomicelles to construct branched mesoporous TiO2 mesocrystals (m-TiO2 MCs) with coherent atomic domains. The star-shaped multipods are obtained by two-step evaporation with nanocrystal mediation, primarily consisting of arms along < 001 >, < 101 >, and < 111 > crystal directions. For each arm, ordered open mesochannels arrange in parallel along the growth direction. The m-TiO2 MC multipods have a surface area of ∼116 m2/g and single-crystal-like frameworks and are good hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. Under full-spectrum irradiation, the branched m-TiO2 MCs exhibit a hydrogen evolution rate of 8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is more than four times higher than that of commercial TiO2 P25. This crystallization-driven self-assembly approach may provide valuable insight into designing programmable mesoporous mesocrystals by controlling the oriented assembly of monomicelle building blocks.
Influence of TiO_2 Nanocrystals with Difference Morphologies on Photoluminescence Properties

Abstract:Four morphologies of anatase TiO_2 nanocrystals including quasi—sphere,rod,mixture of quasi-sphere and rod, and rhombus with well—uniform diameter less than 50 nm,were successfully prepared by solvothermal method.UV—vis absorption and PL.(photoluminescence) were employed to characterize the absorbance and photoluminescence intensity of as-prepared TiO_2 nanocrystals.The PL spectra excited at 330 nm exhibits four peaks at 345 nm.363 nm,380 nm and 402 nm.We firstly discovered and proved the direct transitions X_(1b)→X_(2b)(345 nm) and X_(1b)→X_(1a)(363 nm).This phenomenon results from the changes of TiO_2 nanocrystals {001} family planes' surface situations which caused by oleic acid.The UV absorption peaks of TiO_2 nanocrystals locale at 229 nm.which in not relevant to their morphologies.The calculated value of the as-prepared TiO_2 nanocrystals were close to the theoretical value about 3.2 eV.

Abstract:The large mesoporous microspheres of pure titania (TiO2) and WO3/TiO2 composite have been synthesized using Pluronic P123 template and titanyl sulfate and ammonium tungstate precursors. Titania oligomers hydrolyzed from TiOSO4 precursor can assemble with pluronic P123 to form a large pore mesostructure. The sulfate ions generated by titanyl sulfate forms the hydrogen bonding interactions with the hydrophilic segments (PEO blocks) of pluronic P123. The composites have large pore sizes as compared to the pure sample due to co-assembly of titania oligomers with ammonium and sulfate ions by (SNH4+X-I+)-N-0 process. A mechanism has been proposed to explain the formation of large-pore mesoporous materials with tunable pore diameters. A 5.0% composite shows far superior photo activity as compared to pure TiO2, Degussa P-25, pure WO3 and 5.0% nonporous composite in the degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light due to unique mesostructure, large mesoporous microspheres and presence of tungsten.

Abstract:Ordered three-dimensional (3-D) cage-like mesoporous mixed tungsten-titanium oxides (WO3-TiO2) with relatively high surface area (152 m(2) g(-1)) have been synthesized by employing Pluronic F108 triblock copolymer as a structure-directing agent via "acid-base pairs" strategy. Such materials exhibit enhanced electrochromic properties with the contrast ratio (T-b/T-c) of approximate to1.8 at 550 nm.

Abstract:A mesoporous TiO(2-x)material comprised of small, crystalline, vacancy-rich anatase nanoparticles (NPs) shows unique optical, thermal, and electronic properties. It is synthesized using polymer-derived mesoporous carbon (PDMC) as a template. The PDMC pores serve as physical barriers during the condensation and pyrolysis of a titania precursor, preventing the titania NPs from growing beyond 10 nm in size. Unlike most titania nanomaterials, during pyrolysis the NPs undergo no transition from the anatase to rutile phase and they become catalytically active reduced TiO2-x. When exposed to a slow electron beam, the NPs exhibit a charge/discharge behavior, lighting up and fading away for an average period of 15 s for an extended period of time. The NPs also show a 50 nm red-shift in their UV/Vis absorption and long-lived charge carriers (electrons and holes) at room temperature in the dark, even long after UV irradiation. The NPs as photocatalysts show a good activity for CO(2)reduction.

Abstract:Mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been assembled inside the macropores of diatom frustules by sonochemical condensation of titania precursor, and then thermal treated at an elevated temperature. The resulting hierarchical macro/mesoporous-structures of the TiO2 inside diatom were confirmed by characterizations of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The amount of TiO2 inside the periodic macropores of diatom was controlled by varying the sonication time. It was found that the resultant composite with only 30 wt% TiO2 loading delivered a high photocatalytic performance, even better than that of pure P25. This is attributed to its hierarchical macro/mesoporous structure as it provides a large number of accessible active sites for efficient transportations of guest species to framework binding sites. Other macro/mesoporous structures with a nearly endless variety of functional chemistries and shapes are expected to be produced, leading to a range of novel applications in remediation, molecular transportation and environmental field by using this facile strategy.

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO(2) ellipsoids 250-500 nm in size have been synthesized on a large scale by a template-free hydrothermal route. The submicrometer-sized hierarchitectures are assembled from highly crystallized anatase nanorods about 17 nm in diameter with macroporous cavities on the outer shells. Based on the time-dependent morphological evolution under hydrothermal conditions, an oriented attachment process is proposed to explain formation of the hierarchical structures. Such hierarchical TiO(2) not only adsorbs large amounts of dye molecules due to high surface area, but also shows good light scattering caused by the submicrometer size. The TiO(2) hierarchitectures were deposited on top of a transparent TiO(2) nanocrystalline main layer to construct a double-layered photoanode for dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) application, exhibiting enhanced light harvesting and power-conversion efficiency compared to a commercial TiO(2)-based electrode.

Abstract:Mesoporous titania-silica (TiO2-SiO2) composites have been directly synthesized through a hydrothermal method in weak acidic conditions by using TiCl3 solution as a titanium source and triblock copolymer P123 (EO20PO70EO20) as a template with the assistance of zinc acetate. Characterizations by XRD, TEM, and N-2 sorption measurements show that highly ordered mesostructured TiO2-SiO2 with the BET specific area of 882 m(2)/g was obtained with the Ti/Si molar ratio of 0.1. Morphology of the composites can be controlled by the incorporation of different amounts of titanium species. Highly curved shapes such as winding, wormlike, and wheat grain-like particles were obtained by this direct synthetic method. Acidity and zinc acetate concentration can also affect the morphology of the composites. UV-vis, FTIR and Si-29 MAS NMR results display that titanium species exist both in the framework and extra-framework of the mesoporous SiO2. Wide angle XRD, Raman, and HRSEM results show that the outer surface of the SiO2 (probably Ti-doped) is decorated by round anatase nanocrystallites (probably Si-doped), whereas X-ray mapping results reveal that titanium species are highly dispersed on the final mesoporous composites. The formation mechanism of the mesophase was discussed based on characterization results. Photocatalytic results show that the TiO2-SiO2 composites prepared in this way have high catalytic activity in the photodegradation of isopropanol due to both framework and surface titanium species.

Abstract:Multiphasic titanium dioxide (TiO2) possessing abundant heterophase junctions have been widely used for various photocatalytic applications. Current synthesis of multiphasic TiO2 mainly involves the process of thermal treatment and multiple steps of rigorous reactions, which is adverse to controlling the crystal phases and phase ratios of multiphasic TiO2. Meanwhile, the resulting products have relatively low surface area and nonporous structure. Here, a facile polymer-assisted coordination-mediated self-assembly method to synthesize mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs with controllable heterophase junctions and large surface area by using polyethylenimine as the porogen in an acidic aqueous synthesis system is reported. Using this approach, the crystal phases (triphase, biphase, and monophase) and phase compositions (0-100%) are easily tailored by selecting the suitable acidic media. Furthermore, the specific surface areas (77-228 m(2) g(-1)) and pore sizes (2.9-10.1 nm) are readily tailored by changing the reaction temperature. The photocatalytic activity of mesoporous TiO2 polymorphs is evaluated by photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The triphasic TiO2 exhibits an excellent photocatalytic H-2 generation rate of 3.57 mmol h(-1) g(-1) as compared to other polymorphs, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterophase junctions and mesostructure. The band diagram of possible electron transfer pathway for triphasic TiO2 is also elucidated.
