Abstract:A standing-wave thermoacoustic engine, employing an acoustic pressure amplifier (APA), is simulated with linear thermoacoustics to study the influence of APA’s dimensions on performance of the thermoacoustic system. Variations of operating parameters, including pressure ratio, acoustic power, hot end temperature of stack etc., versus length and diameter of APA are presented and discussed based on an analysis of pressure and velocity distribution in APA. Simulation results indicate that a largest amplification effect of both pressure ratio and acoustic power output is achieved at a critical length for the occurrence of pressure node and velocity antinode in APA, close to but less than one fourth of the wavelength. The distribution characteristics of pressure and velocity in APA are similar to a standing-wave acoustic field, which is the reason for the amplification effect. From the viewpoint of energy, the amplification effect results from the changed distribution of acoustic energy and acoustic power loss in the thermoacoustic system by APA. Experiments have been carried out to validate the simulation, and experimental data are presented.

Abstract:A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on the compressible, nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations is developed to simulate the nonlinear phenomena in a gas-liquid standing-wave thermoacoustic engine, which employs gas as the working fluid and liquid as the phase-matching element. The CFD model is well validated when comparing the simulated onset and steady-state performances with those measured from a real experimental system. Based on the CFD model, the nonlinear phenomena of the engine are analyzed from three aspects. Firstly, the nonlinear dynamic phenomena of self-excited thermoacoustic oscillation from onset to saturation are investigated, focusing on onset temperature difference and steady-state pressure amplitude. Then, the nonlinear acoustic phenomena of the engine operating at steady state are analyzed. The steady-state fluctuating pressure is decomposed into a superimposition of the acoustic modes with different frequencies, which reveals the existence of high-order harmonics. Finally, the nonlinear hydrodynamic phenomena including multi-dimensional flow effect and mass streaming are observed by examining the steady-state flow fields in the engine. The proposed CFD model provides an effective approach to comprehending the mechanism of nonlinear phenomena in gas liquid coupling thermoacoustic engines.

Abstract:For a thermoacoustic engine,gas-liquid coupling oscillation is an effective way to elevate pressure amplitude and to lower resonant frequency. A thermoacoustic engine with gas-liquid coupling oscillation was simulated with thermoacoustics. Based on simulation,the discussion focused on impact of mean working pressure on system's performance,including pressure amplitude,pressure ratio and resonant frequency. The dependence of acoustic power generation of stack,as well as acoustic power loss in each component,on mean working pressure was also analyzed. Experiments were conducted to verify the simulation results. Both simulation and experiment indicate that an increase in mean working pressure leads to a rise in pressure amplitude,which is advantageous for its potential application as a driving source.

Abstract:After a short review of fluid network theory and its applications in thermoacoustic engine, circuit analogy method is introduced to study thermoacoustic effect. A thermoacoustic engine is then taken as an example for analysis with abovementioned circuit analog. Simulation with the analog circuit has been conducted to observe the voltage and current response from the circuit. The results show us some certain similarity with the result from thermodynamic emulation in literature. The circuit analog and simulation is expected helpful for searching the relation with the corresponding characteristics in a thermoacoustic engine, such as heat flux and acoustic wave.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the basics of a thermoacoustic engine with gas and liquid as working fluids. The governing equations for the engine are deduced from the dynamics of each individual component. From the governing equations, analytical expressions are obtained for oscillation frequency and onset temperature. The relations for the dependence of the displacement amplitude of liquid column, the velocity amplitude at the end of resonant tube, the pressure amplitude gradient and the enthalpy flow in stack, on the pressure amplitude in resonant tube are formulated. The calculation with the deduced formulae shows that an oscillation frequency below 10 Hz can be achieved in the thermoacoustic engine with gas and liquid. Meanwhile, a lower oscillation frequency, as well as a lower onset temperature, requires a larger liquid mass and a lower mean pressure. Experiments, focusing on the oscillation frequency and the onset temperature, have been performed to validate the computation.

Abstract:Two standing-wave thermoacoustic engines with a constant-diameter resonant tube and a tapered one, respectively, are simulated with linear thermoacoustics to explore the reasons for performance improvement of the thermoacoustic engine with the tapered resonant tube substituting for the constant-diameter one. Computed results indicate that the viscous loss in the tapered resonant tube is much lower than that in the constant-diameter one, and the smooth joint between the tapered resonant tube and its resonant cavity may avoid the acoustic power loss derived from sharp variation of flow area. The comparison between the computed results and the experimental data indicates that the simulation can roughly predict the performance of thermoacoustic engines with these two types of resonant tubes.
Impact of Liquid Density and Viscosity on the Performance of A Thermoacoustic Engine with Gas-Liquid Coupling Oscillation

Abstract:Gas-liquid coupling oscillation is a novel way to reduce resonant frequency and to elevate pressure amplitude of a thermoacoustic engine, which could be attributed to the increased acoustic inertance by introducing a liquid column into the resonant tube. The performance of a thermoacoustic engine with gas-liquid coupling oscillation could be largely affected by the density and viscosity of liquid, since the acoustic inertance of liquid column is proportional to the liquid density, and the viscous dissipation of liquid column is one of main acoustic power losses in such a system. This paper focuses on the impact of the density and viscosity of liquid on the engine's performance, i.e., the resonant frequency, pressure amplitude, and hot end temperature of the stack, by numerical simulation. Ambient temperature ionic liquid [EMIM][BF4] and water are respectively chosen as the liquid column in the experiments to validate the simulation.

Abstract:The influence of length of pressure amplifier on the performance of standing-wave thermoacoustic engine was simulated and investigated experimentally.It is shown that the practical optimum length of the pressure amplifier should be less than the length by one fourth of the system wavelength,and it is also influnced by the input power,working pressure,load and so on.When the acoustic resistance of load is fixed,oscillating frequency,heating temperature and input power to RC load will increase with the length of pressure amplifier in a certain range.In addition,the pressure amplifier amplifies both the acoustic power and the efficiency.The efficiency of the experimental system with a 3.45 m-long pressure amplifier rises from 1.45% to 3.32%.

Abstract:Multi-stage looped thermoacoustic engines have attracted much attention in recent years[1]. This paper presents the looped 2-stage thermoacoustic prime movers schematically shown in Figure 1, which are composed of 2 thermoacoustic cores (including hot heat exchangers, regenerators and main cold heat exchangers) connected by resonators, thermal buffer tubes and secondary cold heat exchangers in series. The two thermoacoustic cores can be arranged in asymmetric or symmetric configuration. The total loop length is about 8 m. Main dimensions of the thermoacoustic core are listed in Table 1. A funnel-shaped fluid director is inserted between the thermoacoustic core and resonator to reduce the flowing loss.

Abstract:Based on the linear thermoacoustics, a symmetrical standing-wave thermoacoustic engine is simulated with a cylindrical tube and a tapered one as the resonance tube, respectively. The experiments with both cylindrical and tapered tubes are carried out. The suppression of nonlinear effects due to tapered tube as the resonance tube is discussed. Abstract:A standing wave thermoacoustic engine connected with an RC (acoustic resistance and acoustic capacitance) load was simulated with linear thermoacoustics to study the influence of load impedance on the performance of the thermoacoustic engine. Based on the computed results, the effects of the load impedance on pressure amplitude, pressure ratio, velocity amplitude, temperature at the hot end of stack and acoustic power transferred to the load were discussed. Experiments were performed to verify the simulation. The computed and experimental results showed that maximal acoustic power can be transferred to the load when the acoustic resistance of the RC load is equal to its acoustic capacitive impedance. Moreover, a minimal pressure amplitude and a highest temperature at the hot end of stack occur in this case.

Abstract:Based on linear thermoacoustics, a symmetric standing-wave thermoacoustic engine connected with an acoustic resistance and acoustic compliance (RC) load was simulated to study the effect of the load impedance on the performance of the thermoacoustic engine. Experiments were performed to verify the simulation. Both the simulation and the experimental results show that there is a non-monotonic variation of the acoustic power delivered to the load with the acoustic resistance of the load and a maximal acoustic power may be obtained when the acoustic resistance equals to its compliance impedance. And a lower compliance impedance of RC load may lead to a higher acoustic power delivered to the load.

Abstract:A thermoacoustic engine is a new type of pressure wave generator. With no moving parts, it is a simple, reliable, and long-term nonmaintenance machine. It has great potential in space application. An experimental thermoacoustic engine has been fabricated recently. A maximum pressure ratio of 1.12 has been obtained using a working fluid of nitrogen and 1.06 with helium, with corresponding frequencies of 25 Hz and 70 Hz, respectively. The influence of operating conditions and structural parameters on the performance of the engine was also tested.

Abstract:To miniaturize thermoacoustic engines is intended for their potential micro-scale usage,and some suggestions had been proposed for further study on the miniaturization of a thermoacoustic prime mover.A miniature thermoacoustic prime mover was built up,and the experiments had been done to observe the influence of structural and operating parameters on the sound amplitude,resonance frequency and onset temperature of the system.The results show that a proper structure can make the present thermoacoustic system start an oscillation at 100 ℃,which makes it possible to be applied as a cooler of some electronic units.The operating frequency mainly depends on the length of system,while the amplitude depends on the heat input and stack position.

Abstract:A resonance tube is an important component of a thermoacoustic engine, and the variations of its geometries and dimensions may significantly influence the system performance. This paper reports a series of experimental studies on a standing‐wave thermoacoustic engine with a cone‐shaped resonance tube and a cylindrical one, respectively. The preliminary results show that with almost identical frequency of 130 Hz, pressure ratio, acoustic power output and relative coefficient of performance of the system with the cone‐shaped resonance tube are all higher than those with the cylindrical one. A better performance has been achieved in the thermoacoustic engine with the cone‐shaped resonance tube.

Abstract:Thermoacoustic prime mover can convert thermal energy into acoustic energy through thermoacoustic effect. It attracts more attention due to the advantages of its lack of moving component, simplicity and stability. Compared with standing-wave thermoacoustic prime mover, the traveling-wave thermoacoustic engine, which is the topic of present experimental study, is considered to be capable of achieving much higher efficiency. The emphasis is made on design and fabrication of an experimental setup of the thermoacoustic-Stirring prime mover. The pressure oscillations of 66 Hz and 23 Hz were obtained, with helium and nitrogen as working fluid respectively. The influences of heating power and heating temperature on pressure amplitude were investigated and the contrast test for before and after installation of jet pump was carried out.

Abstract:An acoustic pressure amplifier (APA) is capable of improving the match between a thermoacoustic engine and a load by elevating pressure ratio and acoustic power output. A standing-wave thermoacoustic engine driving a resistance-and-compliance (RC) load through an APA was simulated with linear thermoacoustics to study the impact of load impedance on the performance of the thermoacoustic system. Based on the simulation results, analysis focuses on the distribution of pressure amplitude and velocity amplitude in APA with an RC load of diverse acoustic resistances and compliance impedances. Variation of operating parameters, including pressure ratio, acoustic power, hot end temperature of stack, etc., versus impedance of the RC load is presented and analyzed according to the abovementioned distribution. A verifying experiment has been performed, which indicates that the simulation can roughly predict the system operation in the fundamental-frequency mode.

Abstract:Acoustic field is a crucial aspect for designing thermoacoustic engines, especially that in the stack where thermoacoustic effect occurs. The present work analyzes the acoustic field characteristics of a gas-liquid standingwave thermoacoustic engine, based on which the acoustic field in the stack is adjusted through suitable combination of buffer length and liquid column length. Calculation and experiments have been conducted on the system with different frequencies, working gases and charging pressures to verify the method of acoustic field adjustment. The onset and steady-state characteristics of the system with different acoustic fields in the stack are then experimentally studied. Compared with the lowest onset temperature difference up to 108 K in our previous experiments, the system can be initiated at a temperature difference of 53 K after adjusting the acoustic field in the stack, showing good applicability to recover low-grade heat. Furthermore, the acoustic field in the stack close to the pressure antinode is also found preferred to achieve large acoustic power and high efficiency. This work can be instructive for adjusting the acoustic field in the stack of gas-liquid standing-wave thermoacoustic engines.
