Abstract:When the memory set is a fractal, whether the generating mappings of the memory set are linear or non-linear, a fractional integral approximation of flux related on the fractal memory set is obtained. The fractional exponent nu is dependent only on the first generating mapping and the first weight of the self-similar measure. Moreover, a fine approximation of flux in terms of fractional integrals is also obtained. This approximation is dependent on all generating mappings and all weights of self-similar measure. On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Mind the memory: Artefactual scaling of energy dissipation rate due to inconsistent time reversal

Abstract:It has been recently proposed that an observed inverse power-law dependence of the Markovian estimate for the steady-state dissipation rate on the coarse-graining scale in self-similar networks reflects a scale-dependent energy dissipation. By explicit examples, it is demonstrated here that there are in general no relations between such an apparent power-law dependence and the actual dissipation on different length scales. We construct fractal networks with a single dissipative scale and networks with a true inverse energy-dissipation cascade, and show that they display the same scaling behavior. Moreover, it is shown that a self-similar network structure does not imply an inverse power-law scaling but may be mistaken for one in practice. When no dissipative cycles become hidden by the coarse graining, any scale dependence of the dissipation estimate vanishes if the memory is correctly accounted for in the time-reversal operation. A scale dependence of higher-order dissipation estimators signifies hidden dissipative cycles. Our results underscore the importance of accounting for memory effects in analyzing coarse observations.

Abstract:Abstract This article is devoted to propose and investigate the fractal battery discharging model, which is one of the well-known models with a memory effect. It is presented as to how non-locality affects the behavior of solutions and how the current state of the system is affected by its past. Firstly, we present a local fractal solution. Then we solve the non-local fractal differential equation and examine the memory effect that includes the Mittag-Leffler function with one parameter. For that aim, the local fractal and non-local fractal Laplace transforms are used to achieve fractional solutions. In addition, the simulation analysis is performed by comparing the underlying fractal derivatives to the classical ones in order to understand the significance of the results. The effects of the fractal parameter and the fractional parameter are discussed in the conclusion section.

Abstract:Modal relaxation dynamics has been observed experimentally to clarify statistical-physical properties of soft-mode turbulence, the spatiotemporal chaos observed in homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystals. We found a dual structure, dynamical crossover associated with violation of time-reversal invariance, the corresponding time scales satisfying a dynamical scaling law. To specify the origin of the dual structure, the memory function due to non-thermal fluctuations has been defined by a projection-operator method and obtained numerically using experimental results. The results of the memory function suggest that the non-thermal fluctuations can be divided into Markov and non-Markov contributions, the latter is called the turbulent fluctuation (TF). Consequently, the relaxation dynamics is separated into three characteristic stages: bare-friction, early, and late stages. If the dissipation due to TFs dominates over that of the Markov contribution, the bare-friction stage contracts; the early and late stages then configure the dual structure. The memory effect due to TFs results in the time-reversible relaxation at the early stage, and the disappearance of the memory by turbulent mixing leads to a simple exponential relaxation at the late stage. Furthermore, the memory effect due to TFs is shown to originate from characteristic spatial coherency called the patch structure.

Abstract:<p>The memory-dependent derivative (MDD) is a new substitution for the fractional derivative (FD). It reflects the memory effect in a more distinct way. As an application, the representative heat diffusion process is remodeled with it. In fact, due to the existence of heat-conduction paradox, the time-space evolution mechanisms of this process are challenges to the modelers. The paradox cann't be ascribed to the classical Fourier law, and the results show that the newly-constructed temporal MDD model is more reasonable than the Maxwell-Cattaneo, the temporal FD, the spatial FD and the common ones. Moreover, different mediums may accord with different memory times and weighted functions. This freedom of choice reflects the flexibility of MDD in modelling. It can be borrowed for exploring other diffusion problems.</p>

We show numerically that the fractal neural network has a higher capability than randomly connected neural network for fractal pattern and fractally localized patterns, but not for random patterns. We discuss this result from a theoretical standpoint.

Abstract:The study of systems with memory requires methods which are different from the methods used in regular dynamics. Systems with power-law memory in many cases can be described by fractional differential equations, which are integro-differential equations. To study the general properties of nonlinear fractional dynamical systems we use fractional maps, which are discrete nonlinear systems with power-law memory derived from fractional differential equations. To study fractional maps we use the notion of $\alpha$-families of maps depending on a single parameter $\alpha > 0$ which is the order of the fractional derivative in a nonlinear fractional differential equation describing a system experiencing periodic kicks. $\alpha$-families of maps represent a very general form of multi-dimensional nonlinear maps with power-law memory, in which the weight of the previous state at time $t_i$ in defining the present state at time $t$ is proportional to $(t-{t_i})^{\alpha-1}$. They may be applicable to studying some systems with memory such as viscoelastic materials, electromagnetic fields in dielectric media, Hamiltonian systems, adaptation in biological systems, human memory, etc. Using the fractional logistic and standard $\alpha$-families of maps as examples we demonstrate that the phase space of nonlinear fractional dynamical systems may contain periodic sinks, attracting slow diverging trajectories, attracting accelerator mode trajectories, chaotic attractors, and cascade of bifurcations type trajectories %with some new properties. whose properties are different from properties of attractors in regular dynamical systems.

Abstract:Memory is a complex process across different brain regions and a fundamental function for many cognitive behaviors. Emerging experimental results suggest that memories are represented by populations of neurons and organized in a categorical and hierarchical manner. However, it is still not clear how the neural mechanisms are emulated in computational models. In this paper, we present a spatio-temporal memory (STM) model using spiking neurons to explore the memory formulation and organization in the brain. Unlike previous approaches, this model employs temporal population codes as the neural representation of information and spike-timing-based learning methods to formulate the memory structure. It explicitly demonstrates that the complex spatio-temporal patterns are the internal neural representations of memory items. Two types of memory processes are analyzed and emulated: associative memory, i.e., spatio-temporal patterns driven by intra-assembly connections, and episodic memory, i.e., temporally separated spatio-temporal patterns linked by inter-assembly connections. Our model will provide a computational substrate based on low-level neural circuits for developing neuromorphic cognitive systems with wide applications.

Abstract:This article abandons the traditional Laplace transform and proposes a new method for studying fractional-order circuits, which is the Loop-By-Loop Progressive Iterative Method(LPIM). Firstly, in order to demonstrate the correctness of LPIM, the fractance circuit, which is a relatively mature and simple form in fractional-order circuits, was chosen as the research object. The output signals of fractance circuit were studied for the first time using Laplace transform and LPIM, respectively. The results showed that the conclusions obtained by LPIM were completely consistent with those obtained by Laplace transform method and existing theories, thus verifying the correctness of LPIM. Then, a brand new Fractional-Order Memory Systems (FMS) model is constructed, and based on this model, LPIM is used for the first time to simulate the output signal of Flux-Controlled Fractional-Order Memory Systems (FFMS) that has not been studied so far. The results show that when a sine signal is used as the excitation signal, the output signal of the FFMS intersects at two points, and the output signal is modulated by the frequency of the excitation signal. Finally, combining existing theories, predict the output commonalities of FMS.

Abstract:We propose an improved analytical model of fractal memelement and the original one of fractal inverse memelement. From the model‐based analyses, we have found that both fractal elements retain the unique frequency characteristics of their conventional counterparts and their input–output relationships are differentiable, unlike such inputs and outputs. Summary In this work, an improved analytical model of fractal memelement in which the pinched point shifting has been considered and the original analytical model of fractal inverse memelement have been proposed. These fractal circuit elements are the memelement, and inverse memelement operates based on the principle of electromagnetic in fractal time/space, which must be applied whenever the current flows through fractal media. These models are important because these memory elements can be realized based on the porous material, which is a fractal media. In addition, they can employ self‐similarity, which is hard to be simulated by using the traditional models. This is because such self‐similarity can be well explained by the fractal set‐based model, yet those traditional models are based on the set of real values. Therefore, for deriving the proposed models, the fractal calculus, which is oriented to the fractal set, has been adopted as the mathematical basis. From the analytical and numerical analyses based on the derived models, it has been found that both memelement and inverse memelement can retain their unique frequency characteristics despite being operated based on the abovementioned principle. In addition, their input–output relationships are mathematically differentiable albeit the inputs and outputs themselves are not.

Memory behaviors of entropy production rates in heat conduction

Abstract:Based on the relaxation time approximation and first-order expansion, memory behaviors in heat conduction are found between the macroscopic and Boltzmann–Gibbs–Shannon (BGS) entropy production rates with exponentially decaying memory kernels. In the frameworks of classical irreversible thermodynamics (CIT) and BGS statistical mechanics, the memory dependency on the integrated history is unidirectional, while for the extended irreversible thermodynamics (EIT) and BGS entropy production rates, the memory dependences are bidirectional and coexist with the linear terms. When macroscopic and microscopic relaxation times satisfy a specific relationship, the entropic memory dependences will be eliminated. There also exist initial effects in entropic memory behaviors, which decay exponentially. The second-order term are also discussed, which can be understood as the global non-equilibrium degree. The effects of the second-order term are consisted of three parts: memory dependency, initial value and linear term. The corresponding memory kernels are still exponential and the initial effects of the global non-equilibrium degree also decay exponentially.

Abstract:Magnetic spin models and resistor networks are studied on two types of fractals: X fractal and checkerboard fractal. At finite temperature there is no long-range order. The transition at zero temperature shows a discontinuity in the magnetization, and the associated magnetic exponent is equal to the dimension d\ifmmode\bar\else\textasciimacron\fi{} of the fractals. The q-state Potts model and percolation on these fractals are also studied.

Abstract:We extend the recently developed generalized Floquet theory [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 170602 (2013)] to systems with infinite memory. In particular, we show that a lower asymptotic bound exists for the Floquet exponents associated to such cases. As examples, we analyze the cases of an ideal 1D system, a Brownian particle, and a circuit resonator with an ideal transmission line. All these examples show the usefulness of this new approach to the study of dynamical systems with memory, which are ubiquitous in science and technology.

Abstract:Fractals are fascinating, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for allowing the investigation of physical properties in non-integer dimensions. In these unconventional systems, many intrinsic features might come into play, including the fractal dimension and the fractal geometry. Despite abundant theoretical studies, experiments in fractal networks remain elusive. Here we experimentally investigate quantum transport in fractal networks by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. We unveil the transport properties through the photon evolution patterns, the mean square displacement and the Pólya number. Contrarily to classical fractals, we observe anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension. In addition, the critical point at which there is a transition from normal to anomalous transport depends on the fractal geometry. Our experiment allows the verification of physical laws in a quantitative manner and reveals the transport dynamics in great detail, thus opening a path to the understanding of more complex quantum phenomena governed by fractality. Quantum transport in fractal networks is experimentally investigated by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. Contrarily to classical fractals, anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension is observed.

Abstract:A generalized fractional order memory element model is established in this work. From the model, the time-domain voltage, flux and energy relations of three current-controlled fractional order memory elements (Memristor, Memcapacitor and Meminductor) are established. To better characterize how excitation current affects the nonlinear behaviors of current-controlled memory elements, quantities called Current-Control Parameters are defined from the model. These parameters are used to quantify the voltage-current and flux-current profiles of the generalized model and they are used to establish necessary conditions for its voltage-current or flux-current profile to transition from purely elliptical to single and double-loop shapes. It shows that defining memory elements by their current-control parameters is a better way to study their nonlinear dynamics. The findings of this work are verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We present a numerical method to compute the approximation of the memory functions in the generalized Langevin models for collective dynamics of macromolecules. We first derive the exact expressions of the memory functions, obtained from projection to subspaces that correspond to the selection of coarse-grain variables. In particular, the memory functions are expressed in the forms of matrix functions, which will then be approximated by Krylov-subspace methods. It will also be demonstrated that the random noise can be approximated under the same framework, and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is automatically satisfied. The accuracy of the method is examined through several numerical examples.

Abstract:Friction is a phenomenon that manifests across all spatial and temporal scales, from the molecular to the macroscopic scale. It describes the dissipation of energy from the motion of particles or abstract reaction coordinates and arises in the transition from a detailed molecular-level description to a simplified, coarse-grained model. It has long been understood that time-dependent (non-Markovian) friction effects are critical for describing the dynamics of many systems, but that they are notoriously difficult to evaluate for complex physical, chemical, and biological systems. In recent years, the development of advanced numerical friction extraction techniques and methods to simulate the generalized Langevin equation have enabled exploration of the role of time-dependent friction across all scales. We discuss recent applications of these friction extraction techniques and the growing understanding of the role of friction in complex equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamic many-body systems.

A fractal geometry immersed in a hierarchical magnetic flux distribution

Abstract:Fractal geometry presents us with a self-similarity in their pattern at various length scales that is prevalent in our natural world. We present theoretical model of a Sierpinski gasket (SPG) fractal geometry with a deterministic perturbation in the form of a hierarchical distribution of magnetic flux. Such flux configuration induces a deterministic disorder in the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) phases picked up by the electron wavefunction. Using the tight-binding formalism, we show that by tunning the strength of the hierarchy parameter of those AB phases, one can systematically engineer quantum states in a SPG fractal lattice. In addition to this, we have also observed that by controlling the strength of this hierarchy parameter in the magnetic flux, one can effectively regulate the persistent current in the SPG fractal structure. This characteristic is found to be true for various filling factors. Our results could be useful for designing nanoelectronic devices using molecular fractal structures fabricated by chemical synthesis technique.
