Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:It is well-known that for a Brownian motion, if we change the medium to be inhomogeneous by a measure μ, then the new motion (time changed process) will diffuse according to a different metric D(·, ·). In [27], Kigami initiated a general scheme to construct such metrics through some self-similar weight functions g on the symbolic space. In this paper we give an in-depth study of this construction on the nested fractals and the generalized Sierpinski carpets; we assume further that the weight functions g := ga is generated by the “symmetric” weights a. LetM be the set of a such that Dga defines a metric, and let S be the boundary ofM. We provide a recursive weight transfer construction to obtain the M on the nested fractals, and illustrate the construction by the Lindstrøm snowflake; for the Sierpinski carpet we use a symmetric argument directly to obtain theM. Our main result is to characterize the metrics from ga, a ∈ S satisfy the metric chain condition (MCC), and are equivalent to the geodesic metrics. The MCC is used for the lower estimate of the sub-Gaussian heat kernel. This together with the upper estimate in [27] allows us to have a concrete class of metrics for time change, and for the two sided sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate.

Abstract:The burgeoning field of "fractons," a class of models where quasiparticles are strictly immobile or display restricted mobility that can be understood through generalized multipolar symmetries and associated conservation laws, is reviewed. With a focus on merely a corner of this fast-growing subject, it is demonstrated how one class of such theories, symmetric tensor and coupled-vector gauge theories, surprisingly emerge from familiar elasticity of a two-dimensional quantum crystal. The disclination and dislocation crystal defects, respectively, map onto charges and dipoles of the fracton gauge theory. This fracton-elasticity duality leads to predictions of fractonic phases and quantum phase transitions to their descendants that are duals of the commensurate crystal, supersolid, smectic, and hexatic liquid crystals, as well as amorphous solids, quasicrystals, and elastic membranes. It is shown how these dual gauge theories provide a field-theoretic description of quantum melting transitions through a generalized Higgs mechanism. It is demonstrated how they can be equivalently constructed as gauged models with global multipole symmetries. Extensions of such gauge-elasticity dualities to generalized elasticity theories are expected to provide a route to the discovery of new fractonic models and their potential experimental realizations. https://doi.org/10.1103/RevModPhys.96.011001 © 2024 American Physical Society

Fractal Quantum Phase Transitions: Critical Phenomena Beyond Renormalization

Abstract:We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.

Abstract:Fractals are fascinating, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for allowing the investigation of physical properties in non-integer dimensions. In these unconventional systems, many intrinsic features might come into play, including the fractal dimension and the fractal geometry. Despite abundant theoretical studies, experiments in fractal networks remain elusive. Here we experimentally investigate quantum transport in fractal networks by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. We unveil the transport properties through the photon evolution patterns, the mean square displacement and the Pólya number. Contrarily to classical fractals, we observe anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension. In addition, the critical point at which there is a transition from normal to anomalous transport depends on the fractal geometry. Our experiment allows the verification of physical laws in a quantitative manner and reveals the transport dynamics in great detail, thus opening a path to the understanding of more complex quantum phenomena governed by fractality. Quantum transport in fractal networks is experimentally investigated by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. Contrarily to classical fractals, anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension is observed.

Abstract:Fractals and multifractals and their associated scaling laws provide a quantification of the complexity of a variety of scale invariant complex systems. Here, we focus on lattice multifractals which exhibit complex exponents associated with observable log-periodicity. We perform detailed numerical analyses of lattice multifractals and explain the origin of three different scaling regions found in the moments. A novel numerical approach is proposed to extract the log-frequencies. In the non-lattice case, there is no visible log-periodicity. i.e., no preferred scaling ratio since the set of complex exponents spreads irregularly within the complex plane. A non-lattice multifractal can be approximated by a sequence of lattice multifractals so that the sets of complex exponents of the lattice sequence converge to the set of complex exponents of the non-lattice one. An algorithm for the construction of the lattice sequence is proposed explicitly. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
On the Mössbauer effect and the rigid recoil question

Abstract:Various theories for the Mössbauer rigid-recoil effect, which enables a crystal to absorb momentum but not appreciable energy, are compared. These suggest that the recoil may not be instantaneous, and that the recoil time could be used to distinguish between them. An experiment is proposed to measure this time. The idea is to use a small sphere whose outer surface is coated with an electrically charged Mössbauer-active element, and then to measure the amount of energy lost due to Bremmsstrahlung during the recoil of this sphere when a Mössbauer event occurs. As the energy radiated is proportional to the square of the acceleration from Larmor's formula, the amount of energy so radiated varies inversely proportional to the recoil time, and proportional to the charge squared. Although this energy is quite small, it can in principle be measured with the extreme sensitivity available in Mössbauer experiments. It is found that the most information would be gained with more long-lived isomers such as Rhodium-103m as the Mössbauer agent, and that correction terms to Larmor's formula need to be considered due to the finite radius of a small particle, and some of these corrections are included in the paper. These corrections are taken from the extensive literature on radiating spherical shells which were developed to analyze the Abraham-Lorentz model for a classical charged particle. This problem is interesting because a perfectly rigid crystal seems to pose questions about relativity, and because the Mössbauer effect is a phenomenon where the solid-state environment dramatically influences the probability of a nuclear process. Moreover, if the experiment proposed can measure the recoil time, then such measurements might provide a new class of analytical methods for material science and chemistry.

Abstract:Fracton order describes novel quantum phases of matter that host quasiparticles with restricted mobility and, thus, lies beyond the existing paradigm of topological order. In particular, excitations that cannot move without creating multiple excitations are called fractons. Here, we address a fundamental open question—can the notion of self-exchange statistics be naturally defined for fractons, given their complete immobility as isolated excitations? Surprisingly, we demonstrate how fractons can be exchanged and show that their self-statistics is a key part of the characterization of fracton orders. We derive general constraints satisfied by the fracton self-statistics in a large class of Abelian fracton orders. Finally, we show the existence of nontrivial fracton self-statistics in some twisted variants of the checkerboard model and Haah's code, establishing that these models are in distinct quantum phases as compared to their untwisted cousins. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.016604 © 2024 American Physical Society

Non-Hermitian Quantum Fractals

Abstract:The first quantum fractal discovered in physics is the Hofstadter butterfly. It stems from large external magnetic fields. We discover instead a new class of non-Hermitian quantum fractals (NHQFs) emerging in coupled Hatano-Nelson models on a tree lattice in absence of any fields. Based on analytic solutions, we are able to rigorously identify the self-similar recursive structures in energy spectrum and wave functions. We prove that the complex spectrum of NHQFs bears a resemblance to the Mandelbrot set in fractal theory. The self-similarity of NHQFs is rooted in the interplay between the iterative lattice configuration and non-Hermiticity. Moreover, we show that NHQFs exist in generalized non-Hermitian systems with iterative lattice structures. Our findings open a new avenue for investigating quantum fractals in non-Hermitian systems.

Anomalous quantum transport in fractal lattices

Abstract:Fractal lattices are self-similar structures with repeated patterns on different scales. As in other aperiodic lattices, the absence of translational symmetry can give rise to quantum localization effects. In contrast to low-dimensional disordered systems, co-existence of localized and extended states is possible in fractal structures, and can lead to subtle transport behavior. Here, we study the dynamical properties of two fractal lattices, the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. Despite their geometric similarity, the transport turns out to behave very differently: In the Sierpiński gasket, we find a sub-diffusive behavior, whereas the Sierpiński carpet exhibits sub-ballistic transport properties. We show that the different dynamical behavior is in line with qualitative differences of the systems' spectral properties. Specifically, in contrast to the Sierpiński carpet, the Sierpiński gasket exhibits an inverse power-law behavior of the level spacing distribution. From the point of view of technological applications, we demonstrate that the sub-diffusive behavior in the Sierpiński gasket can be used as a quantum memory. By interpolating between fractal and regular lattices, a flexible tuning between different transport regimes becomes possible.

Abstract:The ratio of the elastic and total scattering intensities eta(q) = I-e(2)(q)/I-t(2)(q) is studied for fractals of dimension range widely The results show that it oscillatorily decays with a quantity q (R) over bar(0) where q is the absolute value of the momentum transfer 4 and (R) over bar(0) the average distance between the nearest neighbor sites of scatters in fractal objects. The locations of valleys and peaks of eta are only dependent on fractal dimensions. However, the dependence is very weak and eta is almost a constant varying in the range of only several percent for widely different fractal dimensions.

Abstract:In the single-scattering theory of electromagnetic radiation, the {\it fractal regime} is a definite range in the photon momentum-transfer $q$, which is characterized by the scaling-law behavior of the structure factor: $S(q) \propto 1/q^{d_f}$. This allows a straightforward estimation of the fractal dimension $d_f$ of aggregates in {\it Small-Angle X-ray Scattering} (SAXS) experiments. However, this behavior is not commonly studied in optical scattering experiments because of the lack of information on its domain of validity. In the present work, we propose a definition of the multiple-scattering structure factor, which naturally generalizes the single-scattering function $S(q)$. We show that the mean-field theory of electromagnetic scattering provides an explicit condition to interpret the significance of multiple scattering. In this paper, we investigate and discuss electromagnetic scattering by three classes of fractal aggregates. The results obtained from the TMatrix method show that the fractal scaling range is divided into two domains: 1) a genuine fractal regime, which is robust; 2) a possible anomalous scaling regime, $S(q) \propto 1/q^{\delta}$, with exponent $\delta$ independent of $d_f$, and related to the way the scattering mechanism uses the local morphology of the scatterer. The recognition, and an analysis, of the latter domain is of importance because it may result in significant reduction of the fractal regime, and brings into question the proper mechanism in the build-up of multiple-scattering.

Abstract:We introduce a fractional Klein-Kramers equation which describes sub-ballistic superdiffusion in phase space in the presence of a space-dependent external force field. This equation defines the differential L{é}vy walk model whose solution is shown to be non-negative. In the velocity coordinate, the probability density relaxes in Mittag-Leffler fashion towards the Maxwell distribution whereas in the space coordinate, no stationary solution exists and the temporal evolution of moments exhibits a competition between Brownian and anomalous contributions.

Abstract:We perform Hartree calculations of symmetric and asymmetric semi-infinite nuclear matter in the framework of relativistic models based on effective hadronic field theories as recently proposed in the literature. In addition to the conventional cubic and quartic scalar self-interactions, the extended models incorporate a quartic vector self-interaction, scalar-vector non-linearities and tensor couplings of the vector mesons. We investigate the implications of these terms on nuclear surface properties such as the surface energy coefficient, surface thickness, surface stiffness coefficient, neutron skin thickness and the spin-orbit force.

Abstract:We calculate the temperature dependence of resistivity to second order of the interaction between the conduction electrons (extended) and fractons (excitations in a fractal lattice). The result shows that the resistivity rho varies as [1n(HBAr-omega(F)/kT-HBAR-omega(c))]2 (omega(F) the fraction Debye frequency and omega(c) the phonon-fraction crossover frequency). It is demonstrated that resistivity minima at low temperatures in weak-scattering metallic glasses might be due to a competition between negative temperature coefficients of resistivity (TCR's) resulting from the electron-fracton interaction and a positive TCR from the regular electron-phonon interaction.

Abstract:We present a fractional diffusion equation involving external force fields for transport phenomena in random media. It is shown that this fractional diffusion equation obey generalized Einstein relation, and its stationary solution is the Boltzmann distribution. It is proved that the asymptotic behavior of its solution is stretched Gaussian and that its solution can be expressed in the form of a function of a dimensionless similarity variable, not only for constant potentials but also for logarithm, harmonic, analytic and generic potentials. A comparison with the fractional Fokker–Planck equation is given.

Abstract:Eigenstate multifractality, a hallmark of non-interacting disordered metals which can potentially be observed in many-body localized states as well, is characterized by anomalous slow dynamics and appears relevant for many areas of quantum physics from measurement-driven systems to superconductivity. We propose a novel approach to achieve non-ergodic multifractal (NEM) states without disorder by iteratively introducing defects into a crystal lattice, reshaping it from a plain structure into fractal geometry. By comprehensive analysis of the Sierpiński gasket case, we find a robust evidence of the emergence of NEM states that go beyond the conventional classification of quantum states and designate new pathways for quantum transport studies. We discuss potential experimental signatures of these states.

Fractonic line excitations : an inroad from 3d elasticity theory

Abstract:We demonstrate the existence of a fundamentally new type of excitation, fractonic lines, which are line-like excitations with the restricted mobility properties of fractons. These excitations, described using an amalgamation of higher-form gauge theories with symmetric tensor gauge theories, see direct physical realization as the topological lattice defects of ordinary three-dimensional quantum crystals. Starting with the more familiar elasticity theory, we show how it maps onto a rank-4 tensor gauge theory, with phonons corresponding to gapless gauge modes and disclination defects corresponding to line-like charges. We derive flux conservation laws which lock these line-like excitations in place, analogous to the higher moment charge conservation laws of fracton theories. This way of encoding mobility restrictions of lattice defects could shed light on melting transitions in three dimensions. This new type of extended object may also be a useful tool in the search for improved quantum error-correcting codes in three dimensions.
