Abstract:A new series of blue light emitting copolymers with isolated chromophore have been prepared by using di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) as catalyst via oxidative-coupling copolymerization route. Dialkyloxyl benzene and dimethyl-bisphenoxy alkane are copolymerized with anthracene and dinaphthalene, respectively. The high yield copolymers have amorphous structures and show excellent solubility in common organic solvents, good thermal stability and high photoluminescence quantum efficiency.
Novel efficient blue light-emitting conjugated polymers: Synthesis, optical properties and thermal optical stability

Abstract:A series of blue light-emitting copolymers containing alternative dialkoxy-substituted phenylene group and the fluorene moiety with different functional groups at the C-9 bridge position have been prepared through the Suzuki polymerization in this contribution. The detailed investigation of the optical properties demonstrates that the spectral thermal and optical stability of P1-3 exhibit substantially enhanced resistance to both thermally and optically oxidation by the backbone modification strategy. Moreover, in comparison with P1 and P3, P2 with the spiro-junction shows much higher T-g and significantly improves resistance towards oxidation in the air, indicating that the spiro junction is a better strategy to prevent the formation of ketonic defects or the migration of the exicitons to these defect sites. These properties have established our desired polymers as a family of promising candidate for optoelectronic applications.
Novel blue-light-emitting truxene-containing hyperbranched and zigzag type copolymers: Synthesis, optical properties, and investigation of thermal spectral stability

Abstract:Two series of novel alternating polyfluorene copolymers containing 10,15-dihydro-5H-diindeno[1,2-a;1',2'-c]fluorene (truxene) moiety have been prepared through the Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki polymerization. The structure and purity of desired polymers is fully characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR, UV-vis, and photoluminescent spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, elemental analyses, and TGA/DSC. The absorption and PL spectra of all polymers both in solutions and in thin films exhibit similar behaviors. For example, in solutions, the absorption spectra peak at about 360 nm, and the PL spectra show a maximum at about 390 nm with a shoulder at 412 nm. The introducing of the truxene moiety into polyfluorene and the hyperbranched and zigzag type molecular structures significantly reduce aggregation formation and enhance the thermal spectral stability of the desired polymers. They exhibit good solubility in common organic solvents as well as facile film forming properties. Bright blue emission is observed in both solution and solid states under UV excitation. The investigation of thermal spectral stability reveals that the long-wavelength emission upon thermal treatment usually observed in polyfluorene has been effectively reduced in our polymers.

Abstract:Polyfluorene homopolymer (P1) and its carbazole derivatives (P2-P4) have been prepared with good yield by Suzuki coupling polymerization. P2 is an alternating copolymer based on fluorene and carbazole; P3 is a hyperbranched polymer with carbazole derivative as the core and polyfluorene as the long arms; P4 is a hyperbranched polymer with carbazole derivative as the core and the alternating fluorene and carbazole as the long arms. These polymers show highly thermal stability, and their structures and physical properties are studied using gel permeation chromatography, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The influence of the incorporation of carbazole and the hyperbranched structures on the thermal, electrochemical, and electroluminescent properties has been investigated. Both carbazole addition and the hyperbranched structure increase the thermal and photoluminescent stability. The CV shows an increase of the HOMO energy levels for the derivatives, compared with polyfluorene homopolymer (P1). The EL devices fabricated by these polymers exhibit pure blue-light-emitting with negligible low-energy emission bands, indicating that the hyperbranched structure has a strong effect on the PLED characteristics. The results imply that incorporating carbazole into polyfluorene to form a hyperbranched structure is an efficient way to obtain highly stable blue-light-emitting conjugated polymers, and it is possible to adjust the property of light-emitting polymers by the amount of carbazole derivative incorporated into the polymers. Abstract:We have studied the spectral (UV-vis absorption and fluorescence) and thermally spectral stability of seven fluorene-based blue-light-emitting polymers in film states. These polymers have different side chain and backbone structure. Spiro-functionalization at the C-9 bridge position of fluorene unit could significantly improve the emission spectral quality (narrower spectrum and shorter tail extended to longer wavelength direction) and thermally spectral stability of 9,9-disubstituted polyfluorene derivatives. A glass transition temperature dependence for excimer emission in the polymers was demonstrated, and the improvement of thermally spectral stability by the spiro-functionalization is attributed to the increase of glass transition temperature. The backbone structural modification for 9,9-disubstituted polyfluorenes by alternatively inserting substituted phenylene units could provide blue emission with the spectral quality and thermally spectral stability even better than spiro-functionalized polyfluorenes, and no glass transition temperature dependence for excimer formation was observed in the backbone-modified polymers. The spectral properties of the polymers are dependent on the substitution on the phenylene ring. Thermotropic liquid crystallization was observed in the polymers bearing long alkoxy substituents. The good thermally spectral stability of the polymers is attributed to the poor planar configuration of the backbone and the efficient separation of the side chains on phenylene units for backbones.

Abstract:A novel series of conjugated copolymers having oxadiazole, quinoline, quinoxaline, and pherrylenecyanovinylene moieties in the main chain based on fluorene were synthesized in good yields by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction, a new approach different from the traditional polyhydrazide precursor route (oxadiazole-containing polymers), acid-catalyzed Friedlander condensation reaction (polyquinolines), and Knoevenagel condensation polymerization (poly(phenylenecyanovinylene)), The thermal, electrochemical, and optical properties of these copolymers were examined. All these polymers possess excellent thermal stability with glass transition temperatures of 114-208 degreesC and onset decomposition temperatures of 387-415 degreesC. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal that these copolymers possess low-lying LUMO energy levels ranging from -3.01 to -3.37 eV and low-lying HOMO energy levels ranging from -6.13 to -6.38 eV and may be promising candidates for electron-transporting or hole-blocking materials in light-emitting diodes. The polymers in thin films emit strong blue luminance around 414-476 nm, with narrow bandwidth upon photoexcitation. Photoluminescence spectra of the polymers in the films are only red-shifted by 7-11 nm compared to those in the solution, indicating that the aggregation and the excimer fluorescence are suppressed.

Abstract:The synthesis of hyperbranched oxadiazole-containg polyfluores using 'A2 + A2 ′ + B3' approach based on Suzuki polycondensation was investigated. The molecular structures of the sample polymer were characterized with high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The solubility was found to be poor in organic solvents for hyperbranched polymers with higher contents of 2-(4-bromophenyl)-5-(3,5-dibromophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole monomer. The sample polyfluores showed stable blue light emission even after being annealed in the elevated temperatures in the N2 and air.

Abstract:Several series of fluorene-based light-emitting polymers with the emphasis on achieving efficient and stable blue light emission are reported. Spiro-functionalization may narrow the emission spectra (with smaller tail at longer wavelengths) of fluorene homopolymers to provide purer blue emission. The thermal spectral stability of the polymers could also be improved because of the elevation of the glass transition temperature caused by the spiro-functionalization. However, the excimer emission in fluorene homopolymers is not suppressed by the spiro-functionalization. Alternate copolymers of 9,9-dihexylfluorene and substituted phenylenes may emit efficient blue light both in solution and in film. The optical properties are dependent on the substitution on the phenylene ring. The alkoxy-substituted polymers displayed efficient PL and EL and good thermal spectral stability. The HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the polymers based on the backbone structure could be tuned in a wide range by attaching different functional groups on the phenylene ring. By attaching europium(III) complex at the ends of the side chains in the alternate copolymers, we have demonstrated a new approach to achieving red emission with a very narrow spectrum. The copolymers of 9,9-dihexylfluorene and thiophene and bithiophene with different substitutions were also synthesized to study the effect of substitution and regioregularity on the optical and other physical properties of the polymers.

Abstract:The benzothiadiazole-9,9-bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers with perfluoroalkyl side chain were synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction. The copolymers were characterized and investigated via Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR), cyclic voltammetry (CV), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV-vis) and photoluminance spectroscopy (PL). The results showed that benzothiadiazole-9,9-bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers with different amounts of perfluoroalkyl structural units were successfully synthesized. Because of the long fluoroalkyl side chain in the copolymers, the maximum ultraviolet absorption wavelength of the benzothiadiazole-9,9-bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers was blue shifted compared with that of non-fluorine-containing copolymer of poly(benzothiadiazole-9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PF0BT10). The energy levels of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the copolymers were lowered and the energy bandgap (Egap) was narrowed. Because of the self-assembly of the long perfluoroalkyl side chain, the benzothiadiazole-9,9-bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers exhibit excimer emission at 550 nm. Due to the protective effect of the long perfluoroalkyl side chain on the main chain, the photoluminance stability of the copolymers was significantly improved. After being placed in an atmosphere of about 70−75% relative humidity for 210 min, the photoluminance intensity of benzothiadiazole-9,9- bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers at 530 nm had 54 % of the initial photoluminance intensity, while only 36 % of the initial photoluminance intensity at 530 nm for PF0BT10.

Abstract:In this paper,a convenient synthetic method for novel 1-(2-benzothiazolyl)-3,5-diphenylpyra-zolines under microwave irradiation was described.And novel electroluminescent polymers based on fluorene having benzothiazole and pyrazoline units in the main chain were synthesized. The result polymers were characterized by FT-IR and NMR.The polymers possess satisfactory thermal stability with glass-transition temperature(T_g) of 143 ℃ and 117 ℃,respectively.PLEDs fabricated with the structure of ITO/PEDOT/polymer/BCP/Alq/Mg∶Ag show turn-on voltage of(9.8) V and(11.5) V,and they can emit green light with maximum brightness of 107 cd/m~2 and 65 cd/m~2,respectively.
Photoluminescence Properties of A Series of Novel Copolymers Containing Terbium Complexes

Abstract:The photoluminescence (PL) properties of a series of tri-block copolymers of 9-vinylcarbazole, methyl methacrylate and terbium-methacrylate complex were investigated. In solution, the PL spectra of the copolymers consist of two emission bands, one in the 340～500 nm region and another in 480～600 nm, corresponding to the π~*→π transitions of the carbazole moieties and the f-f transitions of the terbium ion, respectively. The results show that PL intensity from terbium complex moiety in the copolymer increases with the increasing of the polarity of solvent, whereas the emission from carbazole groups in the copolymer decreasing. The dependence of PL intensity of the copolymers on different concentration, temperature, ligand and rare earth content is also discussed in detail. In the solid state, the emission from carbazole groups in the copolymer is suppressed effectively and pure green emission, with a linewidth (FWHM) of less than 10 nm for the main emission peak, is obtained from the copolymers. The significant difference between the PL intensities of carbazole groups and terbium complex moieties of the copolymers in different states is attributed to the phenomenon of "solid state quenching" which is resulted mainly from the formation of excimers of carbazole groups. Thus, these copolymers appear to be promising candidates for pure green emission in thin film polymer light-emitting devices, since they have in their main chain both the hole-transporting property of the carbazole unit and the pure green emission characteristics of the terbium complex.

Abstract:A novel hyperbranched conjugated poly(fluorene) (Hyper-PDHF) was obtained through the Suzuki coupling polymerization. Hyper-PDHF has good solubility in common organic solvents and showed good thermal stability up to 428°C with less than 5 wt% weight loss. The photophysical properties of Hyper-PDHF in solution and net solid film are inspected and compared with poly(di-n-hexylfluorene) (PDHF) having linear structure. An absorption maximum of Hyper-PDHF film was determined at 334 nm which was far blue shifted than that of linear PDHF film (381 nm). Hyper-PDHF showed absolute blue photoluminescence (PL) peak at 418 nm with 394 and 444 nm as shoulder peaks. Hyper-PDHF showed also high fluorescence quantum yield as about Φsol = 0.81. In addition, Hyper-PDHF film exhibited almost no longer wavelength emission peaks even the film was annealed at 80°C for 1 hr with illuminating UV (365 nm) in air condition. The high PL efficiency and no aggregate or excimer emission of Hyper-PDHF results from the inhibition of intramolecular or intermolecular interaction by the introduction of the hyperbranched network into the poly(fluorene) backbone.

Abstract:A series of pi-conjugated compounds (1-23) were successfully synthesized by the Sonogashira, Suzuki, and Wittig-Horner reactions. The structure-property relationship about photoluminescence based on these synthesized compounds was systematically discussed in detail. In addition, energy gaps between ground and excited states of these compounds, which were in good agreement with the experimental observation, were calculated by the semiempirical parametrized PM3 method. It was revealed that emission efficiency largely depends on molecular structure, aggregation type, and size of nanoaggregates.

Abstract:2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene was synthesized by Michael addition reaction using 2,7‐dibromofluorene and perfluorohexyl ethyl acrylate as the reactants. 9,9‐Bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers were then synthesized by Suzuki coupling reaction with 2,7‐bis(4,4,5,5‐tetramethyl‐1,3,2‐dioxaborane‐diyl)‐9,9 ‐dioctyl fluorene, 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐dioctyl fluorene and 2,7‐dibromo‐9,9‐bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene as the monomers. The fluorinated fluorene copolymers were characterized and investigated via Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1HNMR), ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy (UV–vis), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and photoluminance spectroscopy (PL). Because of the long fluorine‐containing alkyl side chain, the ultraviolet absorption peak of 9,9‐bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene is blue‐shifted compared with poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene)(PF8). The LUMO energy level increases and the energy band gap of copolymers widens. Due to the self‐assembly of the long fluoroalkyl side chain, the photoluminance spectra of 9,9‐bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers exhibit a new excimer emission peak at 550 nm. The photoluminance stabilities of the copolymers under irradiation and humid conditions are significantly improved due to protective effect from the long fluoroalkyl side chain. After being irradiated under 500 W iodine tungsten lamp or kept under 70% relative humid conditions, the 9,9‐bis(perfluorohexylethyl propionate) fluorene copolymers showed much better photoluminance stability than that of poly(9,9‐dioctylfluorene) (PF8). These show that introducing long fluoroalkyl side chain into conjugated polymer main chain is a promising strategy to improve environmental stability of devices based on organic conjugated polymers.

Abstract:A novel alternating conjugated polymer (C12-PPE-BT) containing phenylene-ethynylene and benzothiadiazole (BT) units (unless otherwise specified, C12-PPE-BT is represented that the BT ratio is 50% (mol%)) was synthesized by cross-coupling polycondensation with bis(triphenylphosphine)-dichloropalladium (Pd(PPh3)2Cl2) and phase transfer catalyst(PTC). C12-PPE-BT was characterized by 1H NMR, IR, TGA, DSC and elemental analysis. Its electrochemistry, photophysics and electroluminescence properties were discussed. The copolymer obtained possesses high thermal stability, high oxidation and reduction potentials, and high photoluminescence quantum yield. Devices based on C12-PPE-BT copolymer emit red light with λmax = 620nm. The emission of phenylene-ethynylene segments almost completely disappeared manifested that the intrachain and/or interchain energy transfer from phenylene-ethynylene segments to BT units occurred.

Abstract:A partial conjugated hyperbranched light-emitting polymer was obtained by copolymerization, of a fluorescent A(2) monomer and a non-conjugated B, monomer. The polymer displays a good thermal stability compared with its linear counterparts, and a good solubility, controllable luminescent properties compared with full-conjugated light-emitting polymers.

Abstract:A series of benzothiadiazole-based (BT) hyperbranched polyfluorene copolymers with various branching degrees (5–40%) were designed and synthesized. TGA and film annealing tests showed the substantial thermal stability of these highly branched polymers. The optical performance of the polymers in solutions and as films, and their electrochemical properties were characterized. The energy transfer (ET) processes in these hyperbranched conjugated polymers, both in solutions and in the solid state, were also investigated. With the change of the solution concentration and the branching degree, the energy transfer efficiency of the polymers varied in solutions and the main photoluminescence (PL) peaks changed from blue to green region. As films, only green light emitted from BT units. In addition, the PL efficiency of the films decreased dramatically with the increase of branching degrees. All these features demonstrated that highly branched structure would effectively impede the intra- and interchain energy migration, especially in solutions, and remarkably influence the ET process in the solid state, which resulted in low PL efficiency.

Abstract:novel benzoxazine-containing temperature T-sensitive fluorescent polyfluorenes (BluePF-BZ) had been prepared. A benzoxazine monomer (BHPF-paa) was firstly synthesized with 9,9-Bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) fluorene, propargylamine and paraformaldehyde through Mannich condensation reaction. The as prepared BHPF-paa was then incorporated into the preparation of polyfluorenes, and the main-chain BIuePF-BZ could finally be obtained. The structures of the obtained monomer and polyfluorenes were characterized by H-1 NMR and FTIR. The BluePF-BZ was finally incorporated into epoxy resin (E44 + D230) to fabricate the T-sensitive material. The thermal stability, optical stability, and T-sensitive fluorescent properties of BluePF-BZ/E44 + D230 were investigated. The BluePF-BZ/E44 + D230 system showed high spectral thermal stability and reversible T-sensitive fluorescent response in relative high temperature (>433 K). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the T-sensitive fluorescent property of PE Its mechanism of T-sensitive fluorescent property was also studied by comparative experiment and molecular simulation. Abstract:A series of well-defined 9,9'-dihexylfluorene-co-fluorenone copolymers with various fluorenone contents and a set of monodisperse oligofluorenes in the chain center have been developed through the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The structure-property relationships, especially the effect of fluorenone moieties on the photophysical and electroluminescent properties of these materials, are systematically investigated to elucidate the exact origin of the low-energy emission in polyfluorenes. On the basis of our substantial studies of the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and PL decay dynamics of the fluorenone-containing oligomers and copolymers both in dilute solutions and in thin films, the origin of the controversial low-energy emission band might be due to the interaction between intrachain fluorenone moieties in polyfluorenes instead of the intermolecular aggregates or excimers. We further show that fluorene pentamer with a central fluorenone unit ( oligomer 2) is more appropriate to represent the actual chromophore responsible for the green emission in the copolymers. The green emission of the copolymers in the solid states is well described by single-exponential decay and has a lifetime ranging from 4.21 to 8.15 ns, depending on fluorenone content. The substantially enhanced intensity of the green emission with increasing the intermolecular interaction in solid states results from the contribution of both the intramolecular and the more efficient intermolecular energy transfer from the fluorene segments to fluorenone moieties. We also find that the emission wavelength and the lifetime of the green emission for the copolymer with the lowest fluorenone content (PHF-FO0.1) in solid states are very similar to those of the emerging low-energy emission for poly(9,9'-dihexylfluorene) (PDHF) after high-temperature thermal annealing in air. Bright yellow electroluminescence (EL) is achieved from double-layer LEDs based on these materials with an emission peak of 540-579 nm that steadily red-shifted with increasing fluorenone contents. The better luminance and external quantum efficiencies are probably due to improved electron injection and carrier transporting as well as efficient charge trapping and recombination at the fluorenone sites.

Abstract:A novel conjugated polymer containing fluorene and oligo-PPV units which are alternatingly arranged in the backbone was synthesized by using Suzuki coupling reaction. The chemical structure of the polymer was characterized by 1H-NMR and FT-IR. The polymer shows good solubility in CHCl3, Tetrahydrofuran and CH2Cl2 etc. TGA revealed good thermal stability of the polymer. Optical properties were characterized by using Ultraviolet–visible and Photoluminescence spectroscopies, indicating blue emission of the polymer.
