Abstract:An equivalent definition of packing dimension is given for a set in d-dimensional Euclidean space by using its component sets as packings. It is applied to determine the packing dimensions of a class of subsets with prescribed relative group frequencies.

Abstract:The authors show that the self-similar set for a finite family of contractive similitudes (similaxities, i.e., \f(i)(x) - f(i)(y)\ = a(i)\x - y\, x,y is an element of R-N, where 0 < ai < 1) is uniformly perfect except the case that it is a singleton. As a corollary, it is proved that this self-similar set has positive Hausdorff dimension provided that it is not a singleton. And a lower bound of the upper box dimension of the uniformly perfect sets is given: Meanwhile the uniformly perfect set with Hausdorff measure zero in its Hausdorff dimension is given.

Abstract:How to quantify the effective size of particles in a mixture, with different shapes and size dispersity, remains ambiguous. Recently, this issue has been extensively studied for disordered jammed packings in three dimensions, with particular emphasis on the concept of equivalent packing diameter (D e ). However, this approach cannot be simply generalized to two dimensions (2D). In this paper, we address this issue by calibrating D e via quaternary mixtures in 2D, which effectively suppress the ordering in packings. The quaternary mixture consists of two bi-disperse systems of certain shapes with invariant size ratio 1.4. We verify the linear superposition of the specific volume of a shape-mixed disordered packing under identical D e together with the transferability of the equivalent packing size ratio between different 2D shapes. We further devise a concise predictive model to estimate D e for ellipses and superdisks. These results should constitute the foundation of 2D polydisperse packings.

Under certain general conditions, Xiao [Xiao, Y., 2007. Strong local nondeterminism and the sample path properties of Gaussian random fields. In: Lai, Tze Leung, Shao, Qiman, Qian, Lianfen (Eds.), Asymptotic Theory in Probability and Statistics with Applications. Higher Education Press, Beijing, pp. 136–176] defined an upper index α∗ and a lower index α∗ for X0 and showed that the Hausdorff dimensions of the range X([0,1]N) and graph GrX([0,1]N) are determined by the upper index α∗. In this paper, we prove that the packing dimensions of X([0,1]N) and GrX([0,1]N) are determined by the lower index α∗ of X0. Namely, dimPX([0,1]N)=min{d,Nα∗},a.s. and dimPGrX([0,1]N)=min{Nα∗,N+(1−α∗)d},a.s. This verifies a conjecture of Xiao in the above-cited reference. Our method is based on the potential-theoretic approach to packing dimension due to Falconer and Howroyd [Falconer, K.J., Howroyd, J.D., 1997. Abstract:We view space-filling circle packings as subsets of the boundary of hyperbolic space subject to symmetry conditions based on a discrete group of isometries. This allows for the application of counting methods which admit rigorous upper and lower bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the residual set of a generalized Apollonian circle packing. This dimension (which also coincides with a critical exponent) is strictly greater than that of the Apollonian packing.

Abstract:The equivalent packing size of spheroidal particles is studied microscopically. It is done based on the structural results obtained by means of discrete element method. The packing similarity between spheres and spheroids is first established in terms of coordination number, the most popular microscopic parameter associated with packing structure. It is then shown through the analysis of the mean coordination number of each component in a binary mixture of spheres and spheroids that the equivalent packing size does exist. The results are consistent with those determined in terms of macroscopic parameters such as packing density or specific volume. The findings provide evidence to support the general application of the concept of equivalent packing size.

Abstract:In order to compute the packing dimension of orthogonal projections Falconer and Howroyd [3] have introduced a family of packing dimension profiles Dim(s) that are parametrized by real numbers s > 0. Subsequently, Howroyd [5] introduced alternate s-dimensional packing dimension profiles P-dim, by using Caratheodory-type packing measures, and proved, among many other things, that P-dim(s) E = Dim(s) E for all integers s > 0 and all analytic sets E subset of R-N. The aim of this paper is to prove that P-dim(s) E = Dim(s) E for all real numbers s > 0 and analytic sets E subset of R-N. This answers a question of Howroyd [5, p. 159]. Our proof hinges on establishing a new property of fractional Brownian motion.

Abstract:In [10], the notion of homogeneous perfect sets as a generalization of Cantor type sets is introduced and their Hausdorff and lower box-counting dimensions are studied. In this paper, we determine their exact packing and upper box-counting dimensions based on the length of their fundamental intervals and the gaps between them. Some known results concerning the dimensions of Cantor type sets are generalized.

Abstract:The Geometric Bin Packing (GBP) problem is a generalization of Bin Packing where the input is a set of $d$-dimensional rectangles, and the goal is to pack them into unit $d$-dimensional cubes efficiently. It is NP-Hard to obtain a PTAS for the problem, even when $d=2$. For general $d$, the best-known approximation algorithm has an approximation guarantee exponential in $d$, while the best hardness of approximation is still a small constant inapproximability from the case when $d=2$. In this paper, we show that the problem cannot be approximated within $d^{1-\epsilon}$ factor unless NP=ZPP. Recently, $d$-dimensional Vector Bin Packing, a closely related problem to the GBP, was shown to be hard to approximate within $\Omega(\log d)$ when $d$ is a fixed constant, using a notion of Packing Dimension of set families. In this paper, we introduce a geometric analog of it, the Geometric Packing Dimension of set families. While we fall short of obtaining similar inapproximability results for the Geometric Bin Packing problem when $d$ is fixed, we prove a couple of key properties of the Geometric Packing Dimension which highlight fundamental differences between Geometric Bin Packing and Vector Bin Packing.
