On the development of Chinese education in Australia

Abstract:Chinese education in Australia has been affected by several factors,like the Australian foreign policy toward China,China-Australia trade,the population of Chinese Australians and the multicultural language policy. Although it has undergone a tortuous development,it still showed a vigorous developmental trend in the past 20 years,which can be seen from the large number of learners of Chinese,the wide distribution of Chinese education institutions and coverage of different levels in the national education system. Moreover,community Chinese schools are developing rapidly,and some school leaders have great influence. Although Confucius Institutes（classrooms） have distinctive characteristics,their development is highly volatile due to the influence of international politics. Along with the development of Chinese education in Australian,some problems still can’t be ignored. Chinese teaching standards are not detailed enough,the number of advanced learners is not large enough,and the economic value of Chinese needs to be improved. The solutions this paper proposes are to refine the implementation of standards,take a variety of ways to encourage non-Chinese learners to learn Chinese,and improve the economic value of Chinese in Australia steadily.
